Jake thought being demon meant a shredded humanity, stripped of all human emotion. Chaos and self-preservation dominates a demon's instincts. But Jake feels every ounce of pain and despair around him. And it's driving him deeper into Hell. Gabby's choice to save him last summer left a fissure in Hell's gate that released a malevolent evil. When Jake's given a mission by the demons to shadow a human girl who may know the whereabouts of an ethereal weapon, he doesn't expect to see Gabby. But Fate has her own agenda. When Jake and Gabby are thrown together on a camping trip with a group of delinquent teens, Jake begins to grapple with the haunting choices he made in the past. When the evil finds them, the group begins to battle for their lives, alliances are made, and truths revealed. As the evil begins to influence Jake, he questions his link to the demons, his purpose, and his love for Gabby. But the answers to those questions are only found in Hell. And it may cost him his soul.

She now spends her time writing romance, binge watching anime, and spending time with her family.
The Second Shadow picks up a few weeks after the first book ends, and Max and Gabby have relocated to Chicago for a fresh start where no one knows them. Similar to the beginning of The Second Sign, Gabby is still getting into trouble at school, but this time it’s not because of her anger but from the strong visions she has now that her powers have evolved. She has transformed into an unusual supernatural being and is still learning to control and manage the competing powers that reside within her. One of the biggest mysteries to be uncovered over the course of the story is in discovering exactly what Gabby has become and trying to anticipate how she will respond to the external conflicts that occur.
It is clear now what the “Second Sign” means as well as the predestined roles that have been thrust upon Gabby and Jake. Yet they still have free wil,l and another major question to be answered is whether they will actually follow through with what is expected of them. The angels and demons involved have underestimated their love. Although I did have some doubts in book one about how genuine Gabby and Jake’s feelings really were for each other since supernatural forces were drawing them together, I don’t anymore. Even though they aren’t destined to be together, and Jake is now angry and bitter toward Gabby, their love for each other strengthens them in the midst of peril and uncertainty. This second book also contains violence that may make squeamish readers uncomfortable.
All of the main characters have changed in dramatic ways since the beginning of The Second Sign. Gabby is emotionally stronger, and even though she doesn’t fully understand what the angels and demons are planning behind the scenes, she accepts and embraces her abilities, determined to do what is right to save humanity. She still has insecurities about her father and his faith in her, but she refuses to be discouraged by these doubts. Furthermore, Max has become much more supportive, reassuring her they haven’t lost their twin connection.
The climatic events in the first book have changed Max. He no longer blindly follows his angelic orders, and he is less critical and judgmental about the decisions Gabby makes. In fact, he helps her even when it isn’t in his best interest. Max’s goodness is so pure, and I want so much for him to find the love and joy he deserves.
And Jake…wow, he has drastically changed. His grief, anger, and vengeance have hardened him in ways that sometimes make it difficult for me to like him. Unfortunately, his fate was sealed before he was even born, and he now is more willing to succumb to his demons side. Because the story is still alternately narrated from both Gabby’s and Jakes POVs, I still have hope for him. His conflicting thoughts show that he hasn’t completely lost his humanity…yet.
I really like the new characters, Michelle and Jose, who inadvertently become involved in this paranormal chaos when apocalyptic events are set into motion. Even though Jose is human and carries a lot of guilt about his past sins, he really steps up, even risking his life to help Gabby and Jake. I also think he plays a significant role in helping Jake fight his inner demon. I have a feeling both of these new characters will become more prominent as the series progresses.
Although I enjoyed the first book, I was even more fascinated by this second installment because of all the shocking revelations and the OMG ending that absolutely made me want to cry. Now, I’m hooked and eager to find out what will happen next.
I received a copy of this book from the author to provide an honest review.
*I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review*
I read books one and two of this series back to back, so my review will involve both books since the story is a continuation from one book to the next. The Second Shadow is not a standalone novel; I think a reader would be lost without reading The Second Sign first. Of the two, I enjoyed The Second Sign a bit more than The Second Shadow. This review will be hard to write because to discuss The Second Shadow will spoil the first book for any that haven't read it. Don't want to do that. There's nothing I hate more than a spoiler.
The first character we meet is Gabriela 'Gabby' Vega. I really liked Gabby quite a bit. She's fiery, spunky, and outspoken. Bad luck seems to follow the poor girl wherever she goes, friends are few and far between. She's been raised by Adler, her guardian, whom she rarely sees. Her twin brother, Max, is an angel with duties that keep him away for long stretches. Gabby is unsure of her place in life since her father and brother are angels. In the first book, she learns some of who she is and makes a transformation that leads her closer to her destiny. In the second book, Gabby is trying to discover just what the fates have planned for her. But with cryptic angels who speak in circles, that task just isn't easy. Not that the demons are any better. She can't believe a word they say, so she never knows if it's truth or lies spewing from their mouths.
Next we meet Jake Myers. He seems to be the all-American boy next door, except for his incurable thrill-seeking ways. I fell in love with Jake from the very beginning. His relentless pursuit of Gabby is adorable if not sometimes a bit stalker-ish. Jake is a half-demon (not a spoiler since it's in the blurb above), though he doesn't discover this fact until the end of book one. I feel sorry for Jake, can understand his angst and anguish. He goes through an awful lot in a very short period of time. The constant tension between Gabby and Jake is palpable, more so in the second book.
There are some really good secondary characters in this series. Max, Gabby's brother, is a rather complex character. I'd love to read a story about him, perhaps even from his point of view. Pat, well I never really did decide how I felt about him. He's in both books quite a bit walking the line between friend and foe so flawlessly it's hard to tell where his loyalties lie.
The plot is interesting, and I love the way the story unfolds. Elizabeth Arroyo creates vivid imagery that really makes it easy to picture the scenes. I just finished the story and haven't decided how I feel about the ending yet. It was interesting, definitely interesting. I recommend The Second Sign & The Second Shadow to everyone high school and up that enjoys a darker paranormal romance. There are many graphic scenes depicting injury and death. If that doesn't bother you, be sure to add this series to your to-read list.
Favorite Lines “I'm in this. With you. I don't know what's going on with the angels and demons, but this can't happen. I won't let it.” “Lessons in love from a traitor. A Fallen who doesn't even know what side he belongs on.” Pat smiled. “I'm on my side. Remember that.” “Opening her eyes, she noticed an ancient sadness in his expression, and a realization that they could never be.” “She’d believed love to be the root of all evil. It made people do unspeakable things, things they wouldn’t do normally.” “But will you survive another century? You are a new breed, young and foolish. I can feel the loss running through your veins.” “There is no peace for the wicked. Remember that.” Man this book really put me through the ringer emotionally! I have come to adore all of the characters even Pat and I find myself surprised but that! Gabby and Jake continue there journey from where The Second Skin left off. Jake hates Gabby for not saving his sister and Gabby doesn't know that she has started something much bigger by making that choice! Max continues to surprise me in this book right up until the end! I'm DYING to tell you all what happened but, I won't ruin it for you! This Author has a way of dragging you in so deep I felt my heart breaking in this book! I cried more than once when reading this book! So much heart ache so much betrayal! It's crazy! I would love to know this wasn't the last book but this author brought the story full circle so I'm wondering what could be next! Thank you for writing this amazing book! I really enjoyed it and have already told a couple people to check it out. Angels and Demon! LOVE THEM!!! I was given this book in exchange for an honest review! (RAVBT)
Gabby never imagined what the consequences of saving Jake so long ago would mean for her. In her mind, she was doing the right thing. Sadly, she no longer knows if that is true. So much has changed in so short a time, herself included.
She's vowed to control her newfound powers, much to her chagrin. Doing so will be difficult, but it's her only way to overcome the adversities still heading her way. The fact that things have changed between her and Jake isn't lost on her. Sadly, her newest plights overshadow the past. If you can call what she's gone through so far that, anyway.
Refusing to sit on the sidelines while she grapples with who and she is, Gabby does her best to do what she needs to do. Her world, however, is soon turned topsy-turvy when she and Jake cross paths once more. Though he's a tad bitter about what went down between them, he's cognizant of what he truly is now. Unfortunately, it doesn't change the fact that he has a mission to fulfill.
Gabby immerses herself in her new life, determined to find the answers to the chaos that now surrounds her. There's a lot she now needs to deal with, Jake included. If she's to overcome the pending darkness, she'll need to accept things as they are, and allow herself to understand every aspect of her new world. Sadly, that's easier said than done. Most especially when evil lurks around the corner at every turn.
Another page turner, The Second Shadow picks up where the first book left off, and throws you smack-dab in the middle of Gabby's newest plight. She's still reeling from her previous encounter with Jake, and tries to understand what and who she's become. The poor girl has a lot on her plate, and she's not exactly sure where to start with all of it.
Elizabeth has given us a glimpse into what truly makes Gabby tick. Strong, willful, and determined, she'll do everything possible to make sure things come out right, somehow. Will she finally set the record straight, I wonder? And will she and Jake overcome the darkness surrounding them, and have their happy endings?
It's definitely going to be hard in waiting to see what happens next for them, but I honestly can't wait. If you haven't read this series yet, you should. You'll enjoy it just as much as I have, I'm sure.
The Second Shadow picks up where the The Second Sign left off. It's an intense ride towards the end of the world. And the end left me gasping.
Gabby and her brother, Max, are once again in hiding. Now that she knows the truth of what she is, she's trying to deal with all that entails. Max is by her side, protecting her. However, Gabby isn't able to stay out of trouble in her new school. An altercation with another student lands Gabby in a weekend-long detention. It also finds her face-to-face with Jake.
Jake, having accepted his demon side, has been given his first assignment. He, and Pat, find themselves in detention camp as well. And Jake is surprised at seeing Gabby there. Although Gabby isn't part of his assignment, Jake and Gabby learn that the choices they've made have begun the march towards the apocalypse.
The Second Shadow imparts the tale of Gabby and Jake as they try to save humanity. They each know their expected roles, yet they still have free will. The angels and demons, on the brink of war, are awaiting the decisions that Gabby and Jake will have to make. Jake thought embracing his demon would wipe away his humanity. But he finds himself still caring - especially about Gabby. Gabby wants to save the world - but she also wants Jake's forgiveness and to save him as well. And neither the angels nor the demons realized the strength of the bond shared between Gabby and Jake.
I think The Second Shadow's main themes are forgiveness and redemption. There are many characters looking for these. Ms. Arroyo once again delivered a wild, graphic, and pulse-pounding story. I was never quite certain what was going to happen next. There were several shocking revelations that only added to the excitement. And the ending - Ms. Arroyo knows how to knock you in the gut with her conclusions.
My only complaint is that there were times when I felt the story's focus meandered too much. I was unsure of where the story was going and it detracted from my enjoyment .
Overall, The Second Shadow was a thrilling and satisfying read. I thought this was the conclusion and maybe it is, but the ending is definitely open-ended.

A free copy was given to me in return for an honest review.
The Second Shadow is the sequel to The Second Sign, which I read not long ago. Most of what I have to say is that the sequel is even better than the original. The only problems I really had with it were surface errors, mostly typos and the whole ‘use a word that’s close to what you mean’ mistake. There were also a few things that I felt like should’ve been revealed in the first book rather than the second. It was a bit rushed at times, throwing realizations and information on you with little time to really digest it because it’s in the middle of the action and the characters have to get on with things.
Other than that, the story is well-put together. There’s obvious effort in the lore, taking class Christian mythology and fitting it together with Arroyo’s own ideas and interpretations. And like in the first book, she was definitely not afraid to show the more graphic scenes. Descriptions of Erra’s influence on Gabby make your skin crawl (literally in poor Gabby’s case) and Alexi’s torture in hell doesn’t pull any punches in its descriptions. I don’t usually enjoy graphic things like this, but I feel like it would’ve lost something if it weren’t all there.
And some of it is just surreal. Jake has moments where he slips into Hell, or something like that. I can’t even really tell what’s happening, but I have the feeling that’s exactly how I’m supposed to feel.
All-in-all, I’d have to say it’s a successful sequel. The ending also leaves room for another book if that’s what Arroyo has planned, but unlike so many other books, it doesn’t just simply drop off and make you think “Wait, where the rest of it?” So, happy reading!
Jake feels like he's living in Hell. And, in a way, he is. Every minute is torture with his family dead and not being able to be with the girl he loves. Gabby loved Jake so much, she spared him when it could mean the end of humanity. Now they're thrust together again in a nightmare where one of the Four Horsemen is loose. The angels and demons have their own agenda, trying to bend Jake and Gabby to their ways, but if Gabby and Jake don't find another way to end it, both of them will die.
This is the second book in Elizabeth Arroyo's Second Sign series, and it outshines the first. The author takes the mythology of angels and demons she's created and twists it around in the most fascinating ways. I didn't know what to expect, and the surprises kept coming right through to the end. It's fast-paced, dark, and intense. I found it difficult to put my Kindle down and stop reading!
Jake and Gabby struggle with their emotions and their humanity. Both in similar yet so very different situations. The cast of secondary characters is amazing. Jose made me laugh and I wish Max were my brother. Though, I'm a huge Pat fan! The intricate web of sub-plots made gave several layers to this story. I also loved the Horseman chosen to terrorize people. It's original and highly creepy.
I can't wait for more from Elizabeth Arroyo. Well done!
I really liked this book. The Second Shadow picks up where Arroyo's first book, The Second Sign leaves off. Jake is part demon and is trying to come to terms with everything that has happened. Gabby is doing her own bit of coping and trying to figure all of it out. The two of them come back together on a camping trip for troubled teens. Both are stubborn and determined but when trouble comes looking in a big way, how they deal with it is the bigger question.
I really liked Gabby. Her personality and attitude are just great. Stubborn and determined, she is going figure out her role in everything that is going on. Jake has had so much happen to him but still he and Gabby should be together. The author does a great job of making you 'see' what she is describing (even some of the ickier stuff!). Also the supporting characters are really well written and compliment Jake, Gabby and the plot perfectly.
I rate this a 4/5. It is not a stand alone book. You need to read The Second Sign to understand a lot of what is going on but they are good books!
Thank you to Reading Addiction Blog Tours for the review copy of this book. I received this book in exchange for an honest review and the opinions stated above are 100% mine.
Book two in The Second Sign series picks up shortly after book one's crazy ending. There are so many reveals and resolutions that just cause more questions and problems to come up. Gabby is trying to figure out what she has become and is sent to a new high school for troubled teens. Of course, Jake turns up there as well. With a whole new cast of characters, this one made it a little easier to keep them all straight, and not all of them need to be remembered.
The group is sent on a camping trip that turns into a trip to hell with something stalking the campers. Now I know this sounds like a bad horror flick - but it really isn't. This is all about Jake and Gabby facing what they have become and trying to decide what they are going to do about it all. (Although the bugs did seriously creep me out.) Again we have a lot of information that is wrapped up very well, but somewhat fast at the end. I had to read it a couple times to make sure I kept it all straight. This is a fantastic series so far.
This book was very redundant at times. Especially with Gabby and Jake's emotions.
"You lie." seemed to be the only come back suitable for anything said that the characters did not wish to hear.
I am confused as to how Gabby and Max could ever be Archangels if their father is only a Seraphim and angel offspring are meant to replace them in the ranks. Wouldn't they be Seraphim too?
I was not satisfied with the explanation of Pat getting his wings back. I was not satisfied with the explanation behind his involvement either. Though the twists and turns of his character pleased me, the overall explanations were lacking understanding.
My biggest beef would be that I wasn't looking for a happy ending to this book. It was a very dark read and I enjoyed that, but there was no place for a happily ever after, nor did the ending make any kind of sense at all. I'm still very confused--no doubt the point; however, Jake's ordeal could have been handled much better indeed. Nor did it actually seem plausible considering the nature of all that transpired. I'd have to say that I would probably read further but my expectations have been lowered considerably from the first book.
The Second Shadow, by Elizabeth Arroyo, is the sequel to her first book titled The Second Sign. Arroyo has an interesting take on Angels, demons and the apocalypse . The age old story of Good and evil, but in this rendering, the lines are blurry. You don't always know who you can trust. If you like fast paced, high action, supernatural books, then this one is for you. There is never a dull moment when this band of angel demons are trying to save humankind from the end of the world. There is plenty of action and just enough romance mixed in. There is a whole lot packed into this book. Not only angels and demons, but other beings from the paranormal world find their way into Arroyo's creative story telling. My only complaint would be that I tend to enjoy a slower paced book. I enjoy getting to know the characters as if I really know them. I do feel more connected after reading this second book and I look forward to a third?!! 3 1/2 stars!
The Second Shadow is Elizabeth Arroyo's sequel to her dark paranormal novel, The Second Sign, which reignited the war between good and evil. After the explosive ending of the first book, Elizabeth Arroyo reveals a transformed Jake, his body and soul consumed by the demons who have claimed him. When Gabby and Jake are forced together again, old feelings bubble to the surface and though they are supposed to be on opposite sides Jake finds remnants of his humanity and love for Gabby overriding his Demonic side. Elizabeth Arroyo's story is fast-paced, though at times I found the plot confusing, I did enjoy the injection of new characters and a chance to become better acquainted with characters from the first book. The author literally takes her reader to Hell and back and I was both saddened and left reeling by The Second Shadow's ending. I hope there will be a third book.
Disclaimer: I received this book in exchange for an honest review, but that did not change my reviewing process.
Okay, the Second Shadow is the sequel to Elizabeth Arroyo's the Second Sign. I found this one much more enjoyable that the first book, since we had a lot more to work with.
However, I didn't like how everything was packed together, but I still enjoyed this book overall, much more than I did that the first book. I especially found the ending quite satisfying.
This isn't a light read. The Second Shadow is deep, dark, at times bloody and twisted, and I enjoyed every minute reading it. This series is pretty epic.
The Second shadow is fast paced, gripping and dark. The world is heading for apocalypse, demons are everywhere and even the angels seem a bit suspect. It seemed like it was tying everything up nicely at the end, but an unexpected twist has left the plot wide open for another book, and has left me wanting more.
