Weak and predictable storyline

This book was poorly written. The Scottish accent was overly done and often incorrect. It was ridiculously predictable, laughable, and overly wordy. I felt like the author kept repeating the same thing over and over again just to make the book longer.

I thought the accent was overdone and the story itself was both predictable and drawn out. Sometimes I found it was hard to follow the timeline of the story...I would think the new chapter started the next day and then it would be mentioned that days or weeks has passed. I didn’t find the characters very likeable and I thought there were areas that weren’t believable. For example, if there is a suspicion that someone attacked your lands, I would expect at least the main keep to have night guards/patrols. When a second attack was only noticed because someone happened to wake up and then sound the alarm seemed unbelievable.

Meh, cute but stuff prose

Standard and easily predicted plot. Way too much "telling" and not enough "showing". Skimmed most of the book just to see how it ended. Bummed, as I usually enjoy a good romance. This one tripped and fell flat on its face.

Healer of Hearts

The story started off strong. Sophia overcame the death of her father. She quickly
became absorbed in being a healer's apprentice. My problem was with Logan Laird of clan Maxwell. His character was just not believable. He was supposedly a harsh, angry man after the death of his wife. No where in this story did he ever display these qualities. Even in the end and how he responds to his enemy, Dillon, and the truth about his dead wife, no one could be that calm and forgiving. Sorry the end was just not believable. Happy ending but weak.

Wow this was a magnificent adventure and very unique.
The author has done some real fabulous world building in this one.
The plot and story line were wonderful and grabbed me from the start.
The characters are strong and emotional at the same time.
This is one fabulous romance that actually made me want to cry at times.
Highly recommend reading.

I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.

“A Healer for the Highlander” is a nicely crafted medieval romance between two souls who have faced devastating losses and find salvation in each other. It’s also a story that is irrevocably scarred by the numerous errors throughout its pages. It’s too bad that this novel didn’t seem to experience the healing touches of an editor and proofreader.

Things I liked:

The plot may be a little derivative, but I still liked it and I thought it was well-considered. The romantic tension between the two characters wasn’t overdone or stretched out to the point where the reader would become annoyed. Also, the prose could be considered well-written – as long as the reader is able to ignore the numerous errors such as extraneous words, misspelling of a main character’s name, etc.

The characters were likeable and their motivations seemed realistic. I was able to become invested in their plights and triumphs – and felt rewarded by their happy ending.

What I didn’t like:

Aside from the overwhelming number of errors present in the novel, the dialog threw me for a loop. The author attempted to capture the Highland brogue and, while it may have been accurate, reading that dialog slowed me down and jarred me out of my immersion in the story.

In summary, while “A Healer for the Highlander” boasts a pleasant story, well-considered plot and engaging characters, the glaring errors served to severely dampen my enjoyment. I can’t in good conscience give it the 4-star rating I would have provided had the novel been relatively error-free.

Healing the Laird's embittered heart ❤and her fellow clansmen

Sophia suffers the loss of the last of her family when her father saves her from their burning home, but succumbs to injuries that he sustained. She saves their livestock from their burning barn and flees with many others fleeing from their burning homes.
Logan, the Laird of the Maxwell Clan, welcomes the many victims into the keep and oversees their care. He sends out men to find out what happened and to find out what crops, livestock and belongings can be salvaged for his people.
Sophia helps to heal her fellow clansmen along with the clan healer and her apprentice Gilbert that doesn't believe that Logan is a good leader for the clan and is jealous of Sophia being allowed to treat the people so much quicker than he was ever allowed to.
With more catastrophes hitting his clan, Logan convinces the council that they need to declare war on the neighboring clan and stop the annihilation of the clan before they lost anymore of the men capable of fighting.
Sophia helps Logan turn from being embittered from the loss of his wife into a man that turns himself around and becomes the Laird he was meant to be. Logan finds out that his wife that he'd grieved over was not the woman that he had believed her to be and feels that he wasted his life on someone that didn't deserve it.

Sophia lost everything in the wildfire that rages through the land, including her last family, her father. Logan welcomed all the people who suffered in the fire to stay with his family in the keep. Sophia's mother had started teaching her about healing before her untimely death and so Sophia took up healing again under the tutelage of Fanny. Fanny had known her mother and had stories to tell of her. Sophia caught the attention of Laird Logan as she quickly became a good healer alongside Fanny and Gilbert, Fanny's apprentice of several years. Fitting in as a second apprentice to Fanny, Sophia was very helpful as the group went through healing from the massive fires, Then a mysterious bout of illness caused by poisoning, an attack from the neighbouring Laird Dillon, and finally a battle between Dillon and Logan in which a few more good men died and Sophia's horse was stolen. This is an excellent tale of treachery and love. I heartily recommend this tale as a great read. I could not put it down at all. I wanted to read it all. Each book by Fiona gets better than the last one. Enjoy.

Hmm, what to say, I’m basically speechless since I just finished reading this amazing story overcoming tribulations. Fiona you make the people come so alive has if you’re witnessing it first hand instead of reading a story. Although I did guess who the traitor was quite awhile before he was revealed to be the guilty party. It was fantastic how Logan was able to deal e all the strife that was happening and to find a new life too. I don’t think I could be had fair has he was when it came to dealing out punishment. I especially lived the extended epilogue that took place 5 years later so that we could see how things played out later on. I can easily picture little Ava but then I gave a 5 year old granddaughter w dark hair too lol. You keep writing stories like these and I’ll keep reading . If there were more stars than 5 then you deserve it for this treasure of a read☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️🌟☀️🌟🌟☀️☀️

A Healer for the Highlander is one of those love stories that you have a difficult time putting down! It starts out fast paced and doesn't stop until the end! It's a rollercoaster ride full of twist and turns until the very end! Great dialogue, each and every character came to life and you find yourself drawn into their story. The scenes are so strikingly detailed it paints an incredible backdrop that makes you feel like you are one with the story. Logan and Sophia face many trials and tribulations as they battle fire, poisoning, with another clan trying to take Logan's lands. Fiona Faris has written a story filled with drama, suspense, heartbreak, and a surprise twist near the end of the story! Plus the gamut of emotions from despair and grief to joy and ecstasy makes this one an outstanding read that you won't want to miss.

Highland romance

An entertaining book that would have been even more enjoyable had it been a little less predictable and more plausible.

The review contains spoilers:

Entered with a large fire that burned down houses and crops. The people fled to the lairds keep for cover and food.
Sophia was immediately set to help Fanny heal the wounded and an attraction developed between herself and the laird Logan.
More troubles lay ahead, sickness and attacks, in addition, the laird lacked trust in his clan. I had a hard time beliving that the clan would turn their back on the laird that was a bit grumpy after the loss of his wife and prefer a laird they knew to be cruel...

I really liked the plot though with the attacks but I would have liked it even better with less foreshadowing, leaving a little to come as a surprise.

Revenge.

Laird Logan lost his wife in childbirth 5 years ago and has not been the same leader since then. When his people and his lands are threatened by a neighboring laird he is forced to put his grief behind him and make changes to his leadership. Sophia lost everything in a fire set intentionally to take lands and leadership from Logan. She has no choice but to move to the keep with the others who lost their homes. She will serve as an apprentice to the healer. When she meets Logan there is a connection that neither can explain. But they are both grieving their losses and there are forces at work set to ruin Logan and his clan. I enjoyed the story and characters for the most part. I didn’t care for one of Logan’s sisters and the timeline was a bit off at times but I still enjoyed the book.

Fiona Faris is a wonderful author. I received an ARC of this story from her. This story was slightly different than her previous ones in that there are not a lot of gruesome war battles. I believe the best relationship I saw and felt in this story was between Logan, the Laird, and his daughter, Ava. He is a loving nurturing attentive father. After he loses his wife in childbirth, he is depressed and in need of guidance which he finds in the form of the clan healer's apprentice, Sophia. Sophia is a natural healer and her nurturing hands heal the clan. A lovely story of how despair can sometimes bring people together and help mend the external but especially the internal wounds, invisible to so many.

This book was an awesome read.
Fiona is such a gifted author.
The book kept me turning pages.
I loves reading this book.

Logan, the clan chief used to be such a caring laird.
When his wife died, all desire to care for his clan left with her.
The murderous intent of a rival clan,
Causes terrible destruction of the food harvest.
Logan gets a second chance to be the great leader his clan needs.
Along with his new healer, soon by his side.
This was a historical romance, it was clean, whilst still having romantic mild scenes.

5++ stars from me.

Thank you for your review.

Growing up as an only child Sophia lost everything to a devastating fire set by a neighboring clan, including her father. She along with her neighbors found a new life in the Maxwell keep. As an apprentice to Fanny, the clan healer, she began to heal day by day.
Logan Maxwell, the laird, had lost his wife in childbirth. With little Ava as a daily reminder Logan had become hard and bitter. While dealing with the fire, then poisoning of his people then another attempted fire, Logan begins to open up his heart to the lass Sophia. As they fall in love Logan begins to finally heal and become the leader he used to be. A sweet romance with a sweet end.

Sophia's life turns around when a neighboring laird burns the property and fields of the Maxwell clan. Sophia finds refuse at the Keep helping the healer there tend to the victims of the attack. Soon respected, she catches the eye of the Laird who is grieving his wife's passing from childbirth and ignoring his duties until a need for revenge. Proper Scottish dialect of the time, however, at times, the novel seemed almost too long to maintain one's attention despite it's surprise ending. Did not like the block formatting with double spacing between paragraphs since it hindered those who tend to speed read.

Intriguing storyline with chaos, action, betrayal, fear, danger and romance. Logan’s clan suffers a devastating fire, which destroys their crops, houses and lives. Sophia loses her father in the fire and to keep her mind off her troubles, offers her knowledge of herbs to the clan healer. Logan’s and Sophia’s lives are intertwined from this point on. Can Sophia help Logan recover from the loss of his wife? Will her influence help Logan to be a better Laird? The twists and turns in this book are often unexpected and keep you turning the pages until the end. Great Book.

WOW... the emotional ups and downs I felt while reading this story were immense. Several times the story brought tears to my eyes. The characters were strong at heart, considerate under pressure, decisive, compassionate and patient (most times). The romance between Sophia and Logan was strewn through trial and tribulation. Yet they managed to connect. The story had twists and turns and will keep you turning page after page. The ending was so surprising. It took me off guard. Totally unexpected. A very good read.

One of her best

A story that will capture you on the first page and keeps you enthralled to the last page. Sophia looses her father and her home in one night and only has her made left. Like others that lose everything that night, she heads to the keep for help.
Logan is laird but since the loss of his wife a very poor showing as the laird. Fighting the emotions of loss, he can't make himself be the caring person he used to be.
A great story.

This story did not seem medieval.

Widowed Logan was the clan Laird & Sophia
the apprentice healer. A baddie targeted his people,
their properties and their fields for attack. Logan's
sister and Sophia at times questioned his strength
as leader. Logan overreacted w/o knowing the facts
of what he saw or heard. I did not have time for him
to mature.

I felt the H +h were in lust not love. Logan's 5 year
old dtr was the best aspect of this uneven story.

Average Story

I had high hopes for finding a new author to read the books but I am sorry I found this book totally lacking all the suspense and intrigue that many others do give. It was predictable and wordy. To me it was just cute with no thrills. So if you are looking for a well developed plot and a great cast of characters with great adventure and love, I would have to say keep looking this isn’t it.

I read this book for a monthly challenge. I have never read a historical romance before. This was a great book, totally not my genre though. But the writing was amazing, the storyline was great. and the characters were well thought out. Even though it's not my jam, I'm glad I read this book, the writing was so good, I could picture everything so clearly in my mind, and if I have that from a book then I know it was good.

Love lost...Life found

Grief causes one to die inside. One hardens themselves against all things which bring hope and light. This was the Laird's existence. Sophia, who recently experienced great loss, was lost. Their paths crossed at the castle. Love grew unexpectedly. The clan in danger brought them closer. A lovely story showing a way through grief and into the light of love once more.

Good book

I’m a history buff, so I do love to read historical romance. That being said, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as I was hoping I would. Now, this is the first in the series, and based on the writing, likely a new author (at time of publication), so I’ll complete the series in hopes that it gets better. The cliches, and the lack of historical reference and understanding, for me, distract from what is a sweet love story. Spice rating PG.

A Leader from the Highland by Fiona Faris is a captivating Highland romance filled with passion, courage, and heart. The characters are strong and endearing, the setting is beautifully described, and the story flows with the perfect mix of drama and emotion. From the very first page, it pulls you into the rugged Highlands and keeps you turning the pages until the very end. A truly wonderful read for anyone who loves historical romance!

A slight change in this author's writing shows a slower paced story. Fire destroys the village outside the Laird's castle. The laird brings all the people into his keep and discovers a fledgling healer amongst the who he put to work helping the burned.

This story has an underlying theme of grief and how people handle it. An enjoyable read.

This story has action and drama all the way through. Lots of interesting characters, a mystery as to who is causing all the troubles and chaos. A great storyline because it is so good about the healers, it also has romance and hot chemistry. A very enjoyable book. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and gave my honest opinion.
