Stormie's Joy

Rate this book
Stormie’s Joy is a collection of short stories about the animals that have come into my life and blessed me with that special kind of magic found only in the nonhuman inhabitants of our earth. Some of these creatures graced my life for too short a time, and were gone before I had a chance to thank them. Others have become treasured friends and trusted confidantes. All have touched my soul. Stormie’s Joy cuts through the dripping darkness of a past gone wrong to the forgiving light of redemption. A no-holds-barred honesty trumps finesse in the telling of these stories, particularly those having to do with animal abuse or negligence, as I believe that poetry and eloquence are neither mandates nor substitutes for truth. Written with joy, humor and sensitivity, these are the stories of the animals—their heroics, their jive, their heart—and my adventures and misadventures with them. Whether accompanying a friend to transport a new puppy home from the breeder or caring for another friend’s beloved family pet that has reached the end of her years, I feel humbled and privileged to have been a part of their lives. And I know for certain that I have come away a better person for having known them.

Stormie Conway delivers so much in this wonderful collection of animal tails, err, tales! I've always enjoyed animal stories and I found these to run the gambit from deeply emotional to hilariously entertaining. She's had some rather interesting adventures and I absolutely loved the way she brought all the stories to the page in a way that reflected on the past, and faith, and the beauty of all creatures great and small. I really love the vulnerability, honesty, and compassion that comes across in the she has carefully crafted each story, retold vividly from memory in such a way that it feels as if it's unfolding in front of you. Quite an adventure, truly a delight. A great book to read before bed, or early in the morning over your cup of coffee, because each story can stand alone and you can put it down (though you won't want to) and pick it up again later with no worries over "forgetting" your place in the story. I look so forward to reading more from this author who writes with her whole heart!

"Stormie's Joy" is the perfect antidote to the never-ending "to-do" lists and nonstop social comparisons that plague our overly-connected, internet-driven world. As the author recounts the various adventures and triumphs in her pet-sitting business, it's difficult not to sigh wistfully at the thought of leaving behind the corporate world to embark on a simpler way of life, where success is measured in the wag of a tail, the glory of a peaceful walk outside, and the delighted wiggling of a four-legged client during a belly rub. Humor is deftly interwoven with disappointment, chagrin, and even regret; while the adorable antics of various critters easily fulfill the reader's need for lovable cuteness, other stories poignantly remind us that not every owner, pet, or even pet-sitter comes without their own trauma and resulting short-comings. Not every chapter has a happy ending, but the author's dedication to both her crafts---caring for God's creatures and storytelling--- ensures that there will always be another tale (or perhaps, "tail") to tell.

Stormie’s Joy written by Stormie Conway is a delightful and sometimes heart wrenching account of Stormie’s painful childhood and the redemption brought by the unconditional love and healing power of God’s creatures. From the heartwarming account of her horse Flame to the antics of Keno and Buddy, the dogs she cares for in her pet sitting business, Stormie shares her heart and the life lessons she has learned. The stories will draw you in and make you smile and cry, and enable you to see God’s love and healing power.

Stormie Conway takes you on a wild and crazy adventure throughout the pages of this book, delving deep into her past and bearing it all. From crazy dogs and cats, majestic horses, ferrets, and many other animals and creatures, Conway proves the depth of God's love through her interactions with so many of his creations. Full of humor and heart, I recommend this book to anyone who loves animals and a fun, eclectic ride. One word of warning: beware of the crickets and spiders!

I received a free ARC of this book from the publisher.

NOTE: I won a free eBook copy of this book in PDF format from LibraryThing's Early Reviewers (September 2019).

This book made me reminisce on the James Herriot classics. Instead of an English vet in the early 20th Century, this book features an American pet-sitter in the 21st Century. It was hard not to draw parallels with Herriot, and I found myself wishing for a more chronological presentation of events. Narrative form aside, these vignettes read like notes from a close friend, and animal lovers will enjoy Stormie's escapades as a pet sitter.

Stormie’s Joy is an absolute delight. It is a book of short stories but I warn you. It’s like eating potato chips, you can’t read just one. The author shares her life journey with us along with wonderful stories of the pets she sits for and the animals she has loved. This book touches your heart and warms your soul along with fits of laughter! I’m hoping this is going to be a series.

The author perfectly captured what animals mean to us and how they can make us experience every emotion possible. I love how the author wrote about animals that she encountered during her life vs only those that she personally owned. That premise was unique and makes this book different than other animal memoirs.

Stormie's Joy is an excellent read for all animal lovers! I even loaned a copy to my elderly mom and she read it through! The writing is excellent and you feel like you know the animals. I am addicted to TV shows like Dr. Pol and when I discovered this book, I could not wait to order a copy. Please buy this book to give to your animal-loving friends. It's a great gift!

As the author of STORMIE’S JOY, it concerns me that some people have read my book in anticipation of it being a continuous story from start to finish. I don’t want anyone else to be misled. STORMIE’S JOY is not a novel. It is a collection of nonfiction independent-of-each-other stories. And, for the most part, each story has pretty much nothing to do with the one preceding it. There is no complex plot and no character development (except maybe that of my own). Enjoy the book in leisurely small bites, and I promise you a fun and moving read.

Stormie’s Joy was recommended to me by a friend during a conversation about her dog and what she does with it when she goes on vacation. Not a reader by nature, but I found this book both interesting and compelling to the point that it became the first book I read cover to cover.
