He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
This was a much better volume. The writer had to kill off Reika and the guy with the special powers whose name i have forgotten, for me to be pleased! It was so emotional seeing kurono crying for reika's passing, especially that she died defending him. I don't know why i have a feeling that there might be scoring time after this invasion and everyone will get revived! But this would be too good an ending right? The guys controlling the gantz balls are dead, bombed away by the aliens, which was the same plan they had for the aliens. Nishi joins the war after hacking the gantz ball.

Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
"Lame" describes the big emotional part of this volume. So we learn that the team with Kurono and Reika fighting for their lives are actually planned entertainment for the aliens. Ok, I can accept that, except these "alien insects" living in some underground area of the alien base are actually way more powerful than actual aliens who had infiltrated Earth. Waaayyyy more powerful. The power level is just for the sake of dramatising the fight - like I said, if this happened as a Gantz mission, it would git perfectly, but as an alien arena of sorts? Pointless side quest. The worst part of it is that this encounter just serves to give Kurono a different kind of emotion beyond "Tae-chan" - I can accept it happening, but the way it happened is just so lame.
Sakurai has his parts too, as his powers has grown to the point of ridiculousness that no longer adheres to the rules previously established by Sakata. It's kind of sad that this character ended up so inconsequential.
Once again, Kurono and Tae get split up. Kurono being transferred to large battle suit. He and several other Gantz members were assigned to destroy a tower. Sakurai also transferred to the battle suit. His murderous intent keeps growing and at the critical time, his master, Sakata appears!
The rescue team battle the big ass aliens. The second Kurono stays to fight the alien while the others go save themself. The second Kurono can't defeat the alien, and Reika comes to rescue. As he passed out, Reika kill the alien as it cost her life.
Gantz/34 is about a group of black clad Japanese recently dead who are pitted against aliens. In the last several issues, they are in an alien environment. The aliens they are against keep getting tougher and the rules of engagement change as well. In this one, the aliens are some times hard to comprehend and the dialogue sometimes become spaghetti westernlike. The series as a whole has been excellent.
Why the fuck would the aliens set up the final test to determine the fate of mankind inside their own city, so that their own people would suffer all the collateral damage. It makes no sense. Hiroya Oku has clearly been inspired by some Dali paintings for his monster design. I'm kind of ambivalent about this volume. Fuck the author for making Reika die just as a way to give Kei2 something to be emotional about.
