New Omni is currently safe, protected within the sanctuary of the ancilla forest, but the leaders of the settlement know that the murderous artificial intelligence that controls the Nexus won’t give up on its mission to destroy them.
Gray has foreseen a future where he can negotiate a lasting truce with NEX, but the price of that peace is Evie. That is a price Gray is unwilling to pay, until Evie gives him no choice.
Willing to sacrifice herself to save her loved ones, Evie leaves New Omni to strike a bargain with NEX. She agrees to cooperate with whatever experiments NEX has planned, in return for it ceasing its efforts to attack New Omni—a decision that comes in the nick of time.
Ordered to seduce the outcast, Veraza, Evie must put aside her anger at him for his actions against her sister and the enmity he holds towards Iyaren. It is only then that she begins to see the true, tormented male beneath the hatred that shrouds him.
Trapped in a cage of his own making, Veraza cannot let go of his rage, until the smart-mouthed human female is forced into his life—and his bed. His initial antipathy for Evie dissolves as her presence brightens up his prison—and her love changes his mind.
Neither of them expects the passion that flares between them, but they cannot deny their feelings for long. Veraza is left facing a difficult choice, and he must make a terrible sacrifice if he wants to free the woman he loves—and return her to the mates who will stop at nothing to reclaim her and destroy NEX and all of its minions.
This post-apocalyptic, parallel-dimension romance is the fifth in the Into the Dead Fall series. It is recommended that you read the other books in the series, beginning with “Into the Dead Fall,” before reading this one, as this is a continuation of the story of Evie and her mates from a previous book.
Born a dragon, but forced to take human form to fit into those little baby carriers, Susan accepted that she'd have to live a mortal life. She just wasn't going to go around being all boring about it. As soon as she was old enough, she immediately applied for an alien abduction, but got wait-listed, so she made her lair in the desert to wait out the coming zombie apocalypse with a pair of magical cats (they can appear underfoot in an instant, usually at the steps) and the dog from Hades that has three heads (and now has three bodies to go with them).
When the white knight came to fight the dragon, Susan liked him so much she decided to marry him and they now have a beautiful little dragonlet. (Who looks just like a little girl unless you use a magic mirror)
Fortunately, despite being trapped in this dimension, Susan uses her dragon's vision to see all the most interesting goings-on in the multiverse. Figuring they made great stories, she decided to share them with the rest of the mortal world, by writing fantasy, science fiction and romance.
I held off reading Veraza's story for so long because I hated him so much!! I have to say, no one can write a redemption story like ST. I loved getting to know Veraza better and seeing him realize and take responsibility for his choices and what led him to be in the predicament he was. Many times people are deserving of a second chance but they get one anyways. I love that he made peace, he made amends, was ready for a new future with Evie and her mates. I cried throughout by Evie's ultimate sacrifice is what led to Nex's downfall. I loved the conclusion to the series' storyline. Great job as always!
Not my favorite of the series, but I enjoyed it well enough. I had a lot of problems with Evie’s choice and how quickly she developed a relationship with Veraza despite having left her mates and children, but I enjoyed the storyline overall and felt like the book tied things up satisfactorily. I do tend to be a sucker for a scarred/damaged hero and Trombley writes them well. I also really like this dystopian, other-dimensional world she has created, so I will definitely be checking out the Children of the Dead Fall books.
Its been AGES since I read the Dead Fall series, and usually that means a fair amount of "who is this? wait, where are they? umm do i know you?" moments that tend to make re-imersion slightly challenging.
Not for this puppy.
Were there moments where it took me a good chunk to remember exactly who is who, and what is what? Yeah, but you can't fault a girl when there's so many beasties runnin' around.
But overall, there was really no difficulty getting back into the series, and remembering the structure of this beautiful disaster of a world. And the main reason I was able to do so: The uniqueness of these dang books.
The Dead Fall reminds me of a slightly post-apocolyptic, sci-fi, AI intelligence from hell, Tim Burtonesque dreamskape.
Which..yeah..doesn't make a whole lot of sense... But in short, The world is truly something yet to be seen. (I also realize that with the vast amount of books out there I'm sure there are certain worlds that are similar, but I obviously haven't read those because this is a one of a kind for me Homie). A place where AI intelligence has created a wormhole that can open on random planets and suck various creatures, and even entire civilizations into it. Survival against other creatures, AI's minion wormy thingies(*fully body shiver*), and a decrepit junkyard of forgotten cities.
But, to make this precarious journey a bit easier?
ROMANCE.
and not just any old romance NO HO HO, but RH romance....
BUT NOT JUST ANY OLD RH ROMANCE...
REVERSE HAREM ROMANCE WITH ALIENS (WHO LOOK LIKE ALIENS).
Take all my money, all my heart, and all my weird steam lovin' soul.
So, what about this book in particular? We get to go back to my favorite trio from the second book, Key to the Dead Fall. Evie, Doshak and Gray. Evie the earth girl pulled in through the Nexus and her two mates (one a classic gray alien that through the power of love now has a dingdong and 12 pack abs, and the other a spider/scorpion-esque warrior giant with a heart of gold) are living their lives in New-Omni among the (Pause:can't remember how to spell the species of tree....ancilla?..Anicilla?...shoot...Oh well) protective defense of trees. Also in N-O are Evie's sister Alice and her harem, Jane and her minotaur mate, the various children of said characters, and then the other beings who are yet unmated. Life is content, has order, and is swell and kinky in the Gray household.
BUT New-Omni is being threatened by NEX (the AI who runs this effed up carnival sideshow of a world) who wants Evie to perform experiments on. All of which, has basically been a resounding issue the group of main characters have faced since they were pulled into this world.
Now Veraza.....
Hmmmm....
He was a tough biscuit to crack. We met him in previous stories (Briefly getting his wings torn off by Iyaren ((Alice's lion-esque mate)), and in the last story working with NEX towards revenge against Iyaren) and there wasn't a whole lot to go off of on him because: a.) he's literally described as a bird man with feathers, a beak, talons, and legs that fold backward (*inner shudder*) & b.) he's strait up only motivated by revenge.
But what made me first fall in love with Veraza?
She marked her place in the book by folding down the edge of one of the pages. The sight of that desecration made Veraza want to cringe.
&
The fact that he was absorbed in trying to read what many would have described as a "trashy romance novel"-much to Evie's annoyance-just made his intent pose more charming.
Ahhh a bird man after my own hard-cover heart. Swoon.
His and Evie's initial encounter and NEX's plan for them set me on edge, but after learning more about Veraza's past, how he came to Dead Fall, and why his motivations lie where they are, opened up my heart to this poor feather covered bird man dude.
I don't know if you can tell.....I still am having a tough time describing him...
My hat is off to Susan Trombley, because I've found there are certain things I tend to find in RH books that just don't float my boat. One of which is adding new members to the core harem over time. In the past I feel like the complexity of adding that new member tends to be brushed over, when we all know Good and Well that puzzle piece is gonna take some maneuvering to fit just right.
I liked that it wasn't all acceptance or happy rainbow sunshine for Veraza, Evie, Doshak, and Gray. There was struggle, the awkward inclusion of another member to the family, but it was wrapped up so nicely that I am setting aside any of my prior bias' to simply accept the enjoyment
This book seriously ends on a note that I think opens up the HUGE possibilities for more novels for the series (or potentially a spin-off??) where we get the opportunity to look at the lives of the children of the main characters. Which frankly, I am so down for.
And to all my Romance With Aliens Who Look Like Aliens Group peeps, here's to another great book added to the growing list of hot romance with an alien lookin' alien.
Well this review is a mess. But I hope what you get from it is that this is a very entertaining series. One which I would more than happily read again, just to be able to visit this world and characters again and again.
Side Note: I have no idea why this is so funny to me but..
"Now isn't the time to worry about Veraza's choice, Evie."
Why do I find it so FRIGGIN' funny whenever the title of the book is an actual line in the story. Just me? I don't even know why I laugh so hard about things like this, but I suppose everyone has their thing... this apparently is mine.... Oh Well.
I wanted to wait until my day off to read this book. I didnt make it. And I didnt even get up to eat while reading. It made me wiggle with glee at the ending.
When I started this book I was sure I was going to hate it. Evie acted completely stupidly, and it pissed me off. Once I was able to get past that moment of complete tstl, and was able to see it for what it was - a somewhat cheap plot device - things got better.
I'm surprised to say Veraza managed to redeem himself in my eyes. Some of the plot was actually somewhat anticlimactic though. Veraza fell for Evie way too quickly and we barely got to read about it at all. Still, there was a lot of yummy angst there that I enjoyed a lot.
/Begin edit: I forgot to add that I kept being reminded of our pet cockatiel during this book lmao. Ms Trombley knows what she's talking about 😂 I really want to know how she researched this... /End edit
I was also supremely happy with the hea. The previous books ending with nex still in power was too stressful. I'm also glad Veraza properly joined their triad situation, but not enough time was spent to properly do that justice. I still consider him an outsider to the Doshak Gray Evie triad. I guess this is one of those books that could have benefitted from a couple of chapters "after".
My notes mention a few things that I did NOT enjoy:
* That extremely annoying and overused trope where women hate their husband's penis while giving birth. Wtf? My husband's penis was the freaking furthest thing on my mind while giving birth. I've never heard of this happening irl. I'm really tired of reading about it and It's. Not. Funny. * Also that really annoying trope that childbearing is somehow a different pain from any other pain in existence, and therefore not even all powerful aliens and healing spells etc can fully stop the pain? NO. Just fucking stop it! It's part of that "men can't understand pain because they haven't gone through labour" BS that really pisses me off. Add in the weak dudes wincing at their mates' sudden "superpower" because any previous action never hurt them, and I'm just so done with this trope.
Susan Trombley's writing is very well known to sci fi romance fans and overall I'm a fan. As I finish up her Into the Dead Fall series, I don't even know what to say. This is the most unusual series that I've ever read and I like weird books. I've got absolutely no idea how to rate them. Some, I liked more than others but the series as a whole I just couldn't put down. I'm not even sure if I can recommend these but I liked them... I think. They were so unusual that I couldn't stop reading. Kind-of like a train wreck that you can't look away from. They are definitely adult, no YA material here.
What a wonderful way to turn a hateful character into a lovable one! I need this series to be continued, never to finish, the Dead Fall has become one of my fav universes...
You need to read this series in order if you want to understand anything but if you are a science fiction lover and you're looking for something different (not your typical alien romance), this series is for you.
Veraza's Choice brings some sort of closure to the main thread but I certainly hope this will not be the end of this fantastic world.
Susan Trombley's books leave me with a warm feeling inside and with wonder of the joy that fantasy and imagination can offer us.
Difficult to write is what the author said in her rap up. I thought it was difficult to digest in parts. Unlike author I didn’t fall in love with the bird man, V. Do love Evie and her other mates, family. Especially her son. Wished had more about her triplets. Felt like 25% of the Nex storyline could have been deleted, and replaced with more about children, other residents of OMni, and what life is like for those that stay. Example cleared up waste, city, other compacted buildings cleared by Grey, others. Overall I loved enough of the story, other characters to give it the rating I did.
Book 1 Alice, Iyaren and Tak 3 stars Book 2 Evie, Gray and Doshak 4.5 stars Book 3 Lauren and Asterius 2 stars Book 4 Alice, Iyaren, Tak and Kisk 2 stars Book 5 Evie, Gray, Doshak and Veraza 4 stars
Book 2, Key to the Dead Fall, which was the best book in the series (in my opinion, anyway), also featured Evie as the main heroine.
I love her!! She's a badass survivor who does what need to be done (even if it sucks). She's brave and cool and takes no bullshit.
In this book, she runs head-first into danger because it's the only way to save her family. That is so ballsy! Did I mention that I love her? Of course she has three amazing husbands, I would marry her too!
Evie's romance with Gray was amazeballs in Book 2, and I also like Doshak a lot, so this book was very likely to be a winner. What I didn't expect was how little we saw of Doshak and Gray (T-T I was very heartbroken but I guess the book couldn't be 1200 pages), and how much I ended up loving Veraza.
Veraza rocks! I didn't think anyone male love interest would be as intriguing to me as Gray, who is mysterious intrigue personified, but Veraza is a hard contestant for that honor.
He is a proud, arrogant, mentally scarred but unbowed BIRD SHAMAN MAGICIAN.
I never thought that a Bird Shaman Magician would be what floats my boat, but he really is. He's obnoxiously prideful too, and his conversations with Evie, especially in the beginning when they were at each other's throats, was pretty hilarious. He is also extremely ballsy and a fighter despite his handicap (no wings! Thanks to Iyaren) and his lesser strength compared to others in New Omni (he's a lightweight magician, so...)
Anyway, I found Evie and Veraza falling in love very convincing and I enjoyed reading this romance a lot.
I was also super into the new bad guy (Nex got a big bad ancilla despot to fight New Omni!!). Jagganata was so COOL. I would definitely read his origin story, no matter how evil and ruthless he is (villains for the win!).
So, I loved this final (for now? I do hope a sequel will arrive one day! But no Alice lol) installment of the Dead Fall series. Gray rules!
I always want to see more Lu'sians. I would be so happy if we finally got Roz and Ava's book (from the Iriduan Test Subjects series).
How far will you go to keep your family safe? Will you willingly sacrifice yourself to protect them? Or will you swear a never-ending revenge to those who’ve hurt you and yours?
THE BLURB
New Omni is safe, for now. But Nex is still out there, just waiting for its moment to destroy them all. Gray can’t even see a solution in the flux. Knowing only one path to secure everlasting peace for her family and her settlement, Evie is prepared to sacrifice herself to the AI Nex as a willing participant to be experimented on.
Nex has promised Veraza the one thing he has left in life; his vengeance upon the Clawed One. But to get that, he first must help Nex destroy the Ancilla forest and take control of the dead fall. Veraza is shocked when Nex demands he collects the small human Evie… even more so when he learns what is to become of his own fate.
TONE OF THE BOOK
This novel is neutral in tone, leaning towards a dark-weighted nature.
SENSITIVE TOPICS
This novel is aimed at mature readers.
It features some action scenes, although not particularly gory.
This novel focuses on a number of sensitive topics, one of which is somewhat forced sex through situation. The character’s do attempt to bond prior to this, and neither are that particularly willing.
SERIES SYNOPSIS
Veraza’s Choice is the fifth novel in the Into The Dead Fall series.
The novel is 356 pages long, making it slightly longer than a standard romance novel length (of 300 pages average).
The first three novels in the series focuses on three seperate human women. This novel focuses on the return of Evie.
REVIEW
I found Veraza’s Choice to be an improvement upon the previous novel Chimera’s Gift. Whilst I tend to like character heavy novels, especially focusing on healing and improving oneself, I didn’t connect well with the previous novel in the series. Veraza’s Choice took the previously explored head-strong Evie and placed her in a vulnerable situation. Through various events she’s isolated and her only companion is perhaps one of her second worst enemy.
The story flow is well done, with the tension and danger slowly building until the climactic ending. And even then you are left suspecting that perhaps things won’t turn out how you desperately want. Will someone die? Will New Omni survive Nex? The final battle is thrilling and highly dangerous.
The world building doesn’t expand much, once again. It’s almost a shame as a new character, a new villain, is introduced and yet his backstory isn’t explored any further than what’s been implied in previous novels. I would have loved to have seen this new villain to have a different perspective of what’s happened in the past, causing his pain and suffering and current actions. But sadly all we see is his rage.
FINAL WORD
Veraza’s Choice was an interesting read. I was certainly hoping for a more fantastical exploration of the world, as well as more adventuring with action scenes. Instead the focus was primarily on the emotional connection between Evie and Veraza and the world arc.
I enjoyed the book and the ending of the overarching story. Evie annoyed me with her decision to sacrifice herself to the AI. She and Doshak insisted it was a logical choice, but how in the world they didn't think how much turmoil it would bring to all of the New Omni? Maybe it was a right decision, but without previous planning, discussing or even saying goodbyes to the others it wasn't a a smart move. Evie was brave and selfless in sacrificing herself, but how she did that still pissed me off ;) Veraza was such an interesting character. I thought he was a hateful, cruel man, but with a glimpse of a conscience in the last book I wondered how he could be redeemed in this one. And he was, there is no doubt in my mind that his heart changed, and he deeply regretted his past actions not only because he fell for Evie, but also because he let go of the hatred and let himself feel other things. I'd love if their love developed longer, it felt a bit quick, but I guess being imprisoned together could hurry the developing feelings along. I was glad that the New Omni got their peace and entered a golden age of growth and happiness. It was sweet that all the people who didn't want to live there were given a choice to go back to their dimensions, and heartwarming that not all wanted to leave their new community.
Edge-of-your-seat reading! The Deadfall is such a wonderland of unusual entities, many with extraordinary abilities. It is a thrill each time I enter this world to see what new beings we will encounter. “Veraza’s Choice” is an amazing example of this. Evie is a strong and loving woman. I admire her for her dedication to keeping her loved ones safe in New Omni. What an amazing strength of purpose, to leave your beloved family and put yourself into the hands of the enemy! It’s hard to fathom. Evie has such a beautiful open heart that she soon draws Veraza into that shelter. I love that her attention and their imprisonment gives Veraza reason to take a deep look at his own life; his feelings and behavior. Their story is thrilling, and often chilling, with a very satisfying ending. A must-read!
Trombley tied up most of the loose ends for this series and gave happy ever after in a dark world to one of the least redeemable MCs. But I guess if Gray is redeemable, then pretty much every one else has to be as well. Trauma bonding is the beginning of most of these love stories and this book stayed on theme. This story took a closer look at why seeing possible futures might not be all it’s cracked up to be. Part of me still wonders if Alice might have been a better fit for Veraza, but I don’t think he could have fit into their family dynamic. Evie is the certified collector of misfits and villains as of this book.
Spice: 3/5
Triggers: dubcon (pressure from outside source), captivity, torture, violence
The last book in the series . I loved them all . This book really tied up loose plots and have all the characters a happy ever ending . The world building in all of these books has been unparalleled . Evie chose to give up her freedom and her life to give her family a peaceful existence in New Omni by making a deal with Nex . The A.I.computer ,Nex, wanted to experiment with Evie as a breeder in exchange for peace . Versa was used by Nex to further these experiments . This book is worth the read . ENJOY the FANTASY !
well you did it again Susan. I fell in love with a character that seemed completely unlovable. the growth of all the characters and resolution to the threat facing The Dead Fall was exemplary. and the children, absolutely phenomenal. the romance was grown with care and understanding. I love the fact that your aliens are just that, alien! please don't abandon this series for too long
I really love the creativity behind these settings. It outlines perfectly and gives me plenty to wonder about when not immersed. The not great things were the character's personalities. That's such a vague and blah criticism I know. It's just I wanted more of that creative flare there. Quirks, habits, etc. She does well here with a cocky dominant persona. Even some funny stuff! Just fell short for me with the women.
At first I thought this was too out there for a story. But, as I delved deeper I became addicted to the characters and their real life struggles and hard choices. Anyone who has been around the military and dealt with after effects of war recognized that loved one's change after war. True love works through that. This series was rich with character development and truly was a great adventure. Wonderfully positive and sincerely real. Loved it.
This is my favorite series from this author (so far) and so I was particularly excited about this release. I wasnt so sure about Veraza from the rest of the series, but I trust the authors vision and I was not disappointed. I was not expecting who Veraza turned out to be and feel on love with him right alongside Evie! I am satisfied where the series ended and will definitely be looking for those spinoffs in the future - I definitely want more in this world!
Loved all the books in this series but varaza's choice is one of my favorites. I only thing is I don't understand why the author totally ignored Omni, the chield borne of all Alice's mates. I would have love to see how he turned out to be, which traits he inherited from his parents and what he looks like. It should have been mentioned in the previous book or in this one. I hope to see more books coming soon in this series of spinoff on this one.😊
This new book for In to Dead Fall was exquisite! A wonderful all encompassing thrill from start to finish. I did not want to put it down and I did not want this wonderous story to end. This tender morsel had everything from emotions, to passion, action, mystery, science, edge of your seat event's. So happy to add this to my collection. Just wonderful!
Adventure, romance, drama and laughter. An excellent addition to this series. I know that this is supposed to be the finally but I would so love more. I find myself wanting to know what happens next. I am in love with these characters and the deadfall universe. Also fingers crossed for audiobook versions of this series.
If you're looking for quality writing for the sci-fi romance genre, this author is the way to go. Excellent world building, character development, and lovely steamy scenes. I read other books by this author, and enjoyed all of them. Looking forward to the next installment!
Truly a great book that shows the pain of letting go of a past that has turned you into a vengeance seeking missile! Written from all perspectives is hard but you don’t feel like anyone is missed out in this book!
Wow ! What an awesome imagination Ms. Trombley has . This book is so good with great characters and a storyline that covers so many emotions . I hope to hear more about the Dead Fall in future books . I guess one can never get enough of a good thing !
Another amazing book in the series! I loved Evie and Veraza in this one! The relationship between them developed so organically and in a believable manner! Hope we get to see more books in this universe!
So its probably the ending. From the authors notes maybe more, maybe not. Still a good book, a great series. Drama, action, tough choices, agonizing decisions by all characters.
Have read all the books from this series. Have loved everyone of them. Very well written, highly recommend for you to read. The characters interact very well and can follow along very well.
I really liked this one and I finished it really fast. Eating up the pages and each page surprisingly good. Can't wait to read more about the future of Dead Fall.
In some ways this is a hard book to read and in other ways I cheered and was so happy at how things are felt with. It is hard to say too much without spoiling the fun for everyone. I Enjoyed it
Fantastic conclusion to the series.... Not really, so many new threads to follow. Veraza definitely wasn't a likable character, but the author made sure he was redeemable. Long live the creatures of the Dead Fall!
