You all know the story of your favorite fairytale, but did you ever wonder what happened after the fairytale ending? Well we know. Not all afters end up happily, sometimes the real adventure starts much later...
No one understands what it's like when your mother is famous for her beauty and you are, at best, average. Actually I'm wrong. She wasn't famous just for her beauty, but that's how people tell the story, how people have always told the story. That was even her name for a while. No one remembered her real name. She was just the sleeping princess or Sleeping Beauty. Even all these years later, when the royals appear in the paper, my father, the king barely gets a mention and I'm only a footnote in my own life, destined to always be Sleeping Beauty's daughter. My name's Princess Azia Rose of Draconis and here is my story...
Following famous fairytale characters, eighteen years after their happily ever after, the Kingdom of Fairytales offers an edge of the seat thrill ride in an all new and sensational way to read.

Born in Leeds, I lived a very normal life until I got bored one day and decided to travel the world. Since then I've worked on a Banana Plantation, cleaned ACDC's dressing room and been a professional clown. I climbed to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and the top of Kilimanjaro. Nowadays you'll find me being a climbing frame for my two young children, working in a school, and renovating my home. Did I also mention I wrote some books? I hope you enjoy them! Really enjoyed this. I went ahead of the dates as I was eager to know what happens (it is created to read one chapter a day, 1 week each book, one year the entire series).
The story of Sleeping beauty a bit differently. Not a retelling of the famous fairytale, but kind of follow up after eighteen years, focused on the heir. Princess Azia might be adopted, but is still the heiress to the throne. A warrior at heart, she possesses the kindness to show love to her mentally slow brother Remy as much as she can. Her life is somewhat sheltered, but all is about to change with the dragons showing up and her parents determined to marry her off to a fae. Having her life turned upside down reveals more secrets than expected, though, including those in her own heart. Light and fast read full of entertainment, laughter, and a dark omen waiting in the background. In the magical world, strong heroine was formed to lead her people; her character is compley but has yet to crystallize fully under the circumstances and revelations. Magic changes people and affects relationships. And the princess does not have it easy, with falling in love for a guard and being forced to marry an annoying fae warrior. Now, in the shadows of the curse, her strength is being tested, and only the future will show what her decisions bring to the country and her own life.
What a fascinating story about Azia, Sleeping Beauty’s daughter. Who knew fairytales can change like that. Completely lost in the story. Enjoyable change to the classic story.
I received this book for free. I am voluntarily posting this review and any opinions expressed herein are my own.
This story is not a re-telling of Sleeping Beauty but rather the story of Sleeping Beauty picks up when her daughter Azia is told that her parents have arranged her marriage - trouble is that Azia does not like her soon-to-be husband and wants to embark on her own adventures. So, she tells a white lie to keep the marriage at bay...
This is the first book in the series. It is not a standalone and does end on a cliffhanger. Having said that, the story about Azia trying to come into her own is very engaging but the undercurrent to Azia's hope for independence is Sleeping Beauty's curse and how Sleeping Beauty was actually rescued. I found the way the author deftly wove together Azia's story and Sleeping Beauty's story to be very interesting and at the end of this book, I found myself wanting to know more. This is great family fare.
The narrator, Melody Muzljakovich, is terrific. She makes these characters come alive through her narration. She provides distinct voices for all of the characters and made this a very enjoyable and entertaining listen.
Audio Review: Queen of Dragons - A Sleeping Beauty Retelling (Kingdom of Fairytales Sleeping Beauty, Book 1) is the adaptation of the fairytale sleeping beauty and puts a wicked twist on the original tale. The ending was a bombshell. A royal family, turmoil and a complex story. Building relationships and learning magic Azia develops love interests along the way. The ending was a bombshell cliffhanger. Narrator Melody Muzljakovich flawless performance gave each character a distinct voice. Highly entertaining and talented narrator.
This book is about Azia, Sleeping Beauty’s daughter. An adorable fantasy with a strong willed protagonist who is trying to avoid an arranged marriage. Azia reminded me of Arya from Game of Thrones. Short read with more books to follow to continue the story. I got a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review. This is my honest review.
As a follow-up to it’s prequel predecessor, I haven’t quite managed to make the link between the current day Princess Azia, and mysterious knock on the door from the end of the short story. As the beginning of a quartet, however, Queen of Dragons is a strong jump into the fantastical world of Armitage’s design, and into the purview of a fantasy retelling. Serving as the next part of the Sleeping Beaty story, Queen of Dragons weaves the tale of Princess Azia Rose, the eldest child and heir apparent of Draconis. Azia was raised with stories of her father’s daring efforts and her mother’s curse, and how the two reconciled on the fateful day that her father made it through the thorned briars and lifted the curse plaguing Draconis.
In the present day, however, there is something afoot. Azia is informed in a rather abrupt way that her parents have arranged a husband for her. Though their motives are left relatively open ended, we’re served with the reasoning of “for Azia’s protection” without there being much depth to what she needs to be protected from. Azia finds out later that her betrothed is a fae warrior, Caspian, though he is greeted with a relatively cold reception after he insulted Azia’s brother, in conjunction with Azia’s reluctance to consider the marriage at all.
Azia crafts a fabricated lie that she is dating one of the guards, a notion which comes as a surprise to Azia’s parents, partly due to the guard’s station and equally since she had never expressed an interest in dating anyone before. This, too, becomes a point of tension as Caspian has no intentions of relinquishing his claim on Azia’s hand, even as the princess and her parents navigate her alleged romance with the guard, Milo.
This love triangle is also set on the backdrop of a country in turmoil. Dragons have been seen flying closer and closer to the city, and no one knows why. Though this alleged occurrence is said to be an ill-portent or sign of something far worse to come. Pair this with Azia’s journey into the capital city of Zhore, during which she encounters a spindle, something that was outlawed by her grandfather following her mother’s fate, as well its curious owner described as having black-green eyes and a purple shawl.
Azia discovers, too, through Caspian’s help, that she has a propensity for magic that she did not recognize within herself before. Caspian asserts, too, that while she may have magic, hers is nothing like he’s ever seen before, meaning she isn’t fae – but she also isn’t human, as she’s been led to believe. We’re also left with an in-story cliffhanger that much of Azia’s upbringing and background have been left intentionally out of the stories told to Azia, thus giving her a conflict of identity, and igniting the desire to know more about where she came from.
The penultimate moment of the tale comes when dragons bow to Azia, and upon returning to the castle, she discovers that her mother has, once again, become Sleeping Beauty.
As an introduction to the world that Armitage has clearly carefully crafted, Queen of Dragons holds up as a phenomenal first book and is surely the sign of many more interesting things to come.
Een geweldig boek met de geadopteerde dochter van Aurora. Sleeping beauty haar verhaal 18 jaar nadat ze was wakker gekust. Ik heb gelijk deel 2 en 3 besteld echt een geweldig boek.
Loved the plot, not just a boring retelling! A bit fast paced, but not to much, and I love that the heroine is actually behaving as a normal person who speaks her mind.
I have had J.A. Armitage on my list to read for a while now it seems but this was the first thing I actually got around to reading. When I caught wind of this series I was so excited! I love fairy tales and this promises to be unlike anything ever before.
Now I have to be honest, I am not reading this book the way it was intended (a chapter a day in real time) as I don't have the will power. I just devour the book because it is that good.
It follows Sleeping Beauty's daughter who is average looking at best, or so she says. It is a short fun read that makes me wonder how I am going to get them all!
Well, this one... "It's my conundrum wrapped in a mystery tied with a puzzle showed in a pickle jar." to quote Christina Lauren's "The Exception to the Rule".
For the good parts: I am intrigued by the story and retellings usually don't do it for me, but this follows the daughter, rather than the parents and that's new. I don't really have a sense for Azia just yet. I love Caspian because... snarky Fae? 'nuff said. But, really, they don't get along (shocker!) since the very first interaction (his fault) so it makes for some very interesting relationship dynamics. Means there's room to grow as the story progresses.
Ahem! And now the bad... First and foremost - I don't like Milo. I think he's an opportunist who can't take a hint that is spelled out for him MULTIPLE TIMES, and instead proceeds to push his company onto Azia. He's too sugar sweet nice and not in a way that he does a lot of nice things.... He just... lacks substance? And he's pushy, but that goes with the opportunist. Sooooo pushy! Or maybe that's not even the word. He just... he rubs me the wrong way, okay?
Okay, so he It's highly cringy to me. You, sir, need to step away!
And the way Azia is just going with it also makes me cringe. Girl, can't you make up your mind on what you want??? Ugh! P.S. Yes, she's young, I get it. Doesn't frustrate me any less though.
And then there is the world building/writing. Medieval castle, dragons, swords and oh, look! Cereal, cash, modern doctors with stethoscopes running tests and future queen having boyfriends instead of suitors... ugh! This is not supposed to be an urban fantasy so yeah, every time a modern term is mentioned I cringe. I can't get a sense for the world when I'm constantly being pulled out of fantasy with castles and dragons, and into fantasy with doctors with stethoscopes and people paying with cash while eating cereal. It bugs me. I hate it. It leaves world building a lot to be desired for.
Also, the magic. It's the most blatant and boring magic I've ever seen in a fantasy book. And it seems with zero rules, limitations or consequences.
Anyway, I do plan to continue on in the series, because yes, I'm intrigued and nothing has made me feel for a very long time, even if this does also infuriate me a lot of the times.
Queen of Dragons is a retelling of sorts of Sleeping Beauty and what happened after the happily ever after bit. Queen of Dragons tells the tale of Sleeping Beauty’s daughter Princess Azia Rose of Draconis. It is time for Azia to prepare for her taking over as the Queen when the day comes of course.
Azia’s parents believe it is time for Azia to take a husband to help guide her as Queen when she takes the throne. But Azia is not ready for marriage she wants to live life on her own and to have the opportunity to explore life and if love is in the cards for her then maybe one day she will meet her prince charming but if not that is ok too.
When the king and queen introduces Azia to her husband to be she is so upset by the idea of marring this man that when she opens her mouth out pops the words that she can’t marry this guy as she already has a boyfriend not what she expected to say at all. Her parents had no idea that she was dating anyone so when they ask who she is dating she gives them the name of one of her guards.
Azia has gotten herself in a mess now because the guard has no clue that they are dating but when she informs him of the fact he plays along nicely as I do believe the guard has a huge crush on our little princess. The news of Azia’s boyfriend does not deter her parents in the least as they continue to insist that she is to marry the other guy. Who will become the next Prince Charming the guard or this new guy that Azia does not like in the least?
Something strange is happening in the kingdom as something has changed. Dragons have always flown over the land but now they are flying lower than usual. What is up with the dragons? Why are they flying lower? Will they attack the people?
Queen of Dragons is a wonderful retelling of Sleeping Beauty. Queen of Dragons is just the beginning into a new world of fairy tale retellings that I am so happy to be a part of. I can’t wait for more in this world of retellings. Queen of Dragons has a few twists but there was one big twist that I did not see coming I was expecting one thing and got another. Wow now that was one surprising twist. After that twist I can’t wait to see what is in store for us in the next chapter of the Kingdom of Fairytales with the Heiress of Embers.
I highly recommend Queen of Dragons to anyone who loved reading the famous fairy tale Sleeping Beauty growing up. Oh and if you are into dragons then Queen of Dragons is the book for you.
These would probably be good books but there is one HUGE publication where printing error! I know it might seem persnickity BUT Amazon has this great feature which the Publisher is totally creating an unnecessary and confusing MESS. I refuse to read another on of these books until they FIX it. Now, you might be wondering what this ridiculously dumb error might be with an outsized impact.... it starts with....
Once y Upon A Time....
there was this small (probably) but interesting publisher who knew good books when they saw them. And, upon hearing this, a crowd of either interesting, fun, and VERY romantic Story Tellers and Bards got together and after a lot of fun and laughter, these brave women (for the most part) decided to create a world where all of the stories could live and love. Which, mind you, is a Spectacularly Good Idea. So they did - each Fabulous and Devious Story Teller telling a part of the larger tale while keeping their Humble Readers on the Very Edge of their seats. for these were Tales meant for grown ups - as Fairy Tales were Meant To Be before they were watered down for Childish Ears who were not meant to hear, yet, of the Complexity, Greige, and Sometimes Pernicious and Infernal world that their Caretakers navigate to try to keep them Safe!
So, Fanastical, Fabulous, Mysterious, and Romantic as these stories are, they suffer from One Fatal Flaw.
The Erstwhile Publisher of these Wondrous and Twisted Tales failed to use an option available to all Publishers, Large and small, Singular and Numerous!
They Failed to use the option available to both Humble and Elegant Publishers of all varieties!
They utterly and completely failed to allow these Fantastical Tomes that to order themselves in a group both by series order and by the order that Their Fair Audience reads their stories of wonder and mystery... Thus making it hard to sort the books in their libraries and hiding the reading order of their other tomes in their collections by burying their books in an onslaught of the stories of this collection.
As a result of this untoward mess, this makes it hard also to find all of the books in the series and is confusing as to order!
I pray you, gifted Tale Spinners, talk to your publisher and make this Right!

This is a brilliant read. Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believeable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Queen of the Dragons is a fairy tale of what happens after Sleeping Beauty happy ending. Its the story of her daughter, Princess Azia.
Azia's parents think its now time for her to take a husban and have chosen someone for her. She's really upset about this and not ready to mary or to even have a boyfriend. She got into a mess when she told her parent that she can't mary that guy cause she already is seeing someone and end up telling the name of one of her guard when ask who the guy is.
This one play nicely the role because secretly he always have a crush on the princess. Something is also menacing the kingdom. Dragons are now flowing lower that usual and thats only mean that bad stuff will come.
And while getting to know the fae prince, this one think that Azia have power and she was. Since she's adopted she never have ask her parents who her birthparents are.
Really can't wait to know more into this story. If you love fairy tales, this is for you. Each story will have a week in the live of the character and when one story wrap-up the next character at the end.
I have received an arc of this book from the author.
Wow! What happened after Snow White's happily ever after and her marriage to the Prince? Well...They became King and Queen of Draconis and have 3 boys and a daughter, Azia Rose. Princess Azia just turned 18 as feisty a teen can be. But according to her parents she needs to get married and learn how to run a kingdom since she will be queen one day. In comes a most disagreeable Fae who has very strong magic. Surprise! Why have the King and Queen invited him to the castle to meet Azia? We are treated to lots of action, a great snarky character in Azia, a handsome guard and lots of dragons who all of a sudden have started flying to low which seems like an omen of things to come like in the past history of Draconis. To top that off, we know Azia is adopted, but who were her parents? Another mystery. When I first began this book, I knew there was no way I could put it down. I can't wait to continue with the next episode! I received an ARC from the author but the opinions expressed here are strictly my own.
I have been provided with a review copy of Queen of Dragons by the author for an impartial review. This is the first book in the brand-new Kingdom of Fairytales series and the first episode of four for the Sleeping Beauty Retelling. Since this is part one of four be ready for a cliffhanger so if that’s something you don’t like you might want to wait until all the parts are available before you start reading them. Each book is novella sized and setup in such a way that each chapter is a day in the life of the main character so each episode or book is a week in the life of the characters. I wasn’t sure if I would like this setup or the way it was written on the page with the breaks and everything, but I was pleasantly surprised with how it was done. I just had a great time reading this episode and I loved getting to meet Azia the daughter of Sleeping Beauty. It was just a story I had never considered before and I hated when I turned the last page. This story just dragged me in and I was going right along with Azia. I can’t wait to read the next episode of this series.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I liked the glimpses of Sleeping Beauty and her Handsome Prince as they are older and are parents. However, the story is about their adopted daughter, Azia, as she struggles against the arranged marriage her parents are hoping she accepts. Azia, though, has different plans. She decides to claim she is in love with someone else so that her parents won't make her wed the Fae who has come to claim her hand. She doesn't plan to actually start having feelings for her guard, Milo, who agrees to help her get out of her betrothal. As she becomes familiar with both men, she is torn between them, especially when she is with Caspian, the fae her parents want her to marry.
The book was well written and the characters are well developed.I'm intrigued by the idea of the one chapter a day reading plan, and I can see how it would give busy people the opportunity to read just a little each day. I'd be interested in reading other books in this series.
Overall, I liked the book, but I didn't like the cliffhanger at the end! I can't wait to find out what happens next!
This series starts with what happened a decade or two after Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty's) ever after began, but sadly the first part of the book seems very lackluster.
We meet Briar Rose's 3 sons, 1 adopted daughter and her prince charming and honestly the only ones who seem to hold interest are Azia (adopted daughter) and Remy (the eldest but mentally challenged son). The story is about Azia, her past, her coming into her powers and her being pushed into a marriage which she doesn't want.
The first part of the book is more background building and honestly didn't interest me at all. It seemed to be about another Princess & Fae Prince forced romance. In fact it is only mid way that things truly start happening and the real plot behind the story starts coming out.
Once the plot picks up and story gains momentum, it's thrilling and enjoyable to see Azia exploring her powers, coming into her self and starting to walk on the path of greatness.
This is honest review and written at my own choice & discretion.
The story of Sleeping beauty but told a bit differently. Not as a retelling of the famous fairytale, but kind of follow up after eighteen years which is focused on the heir Princess Azia. She might be adopted, but she is the heiress to the throne. She possesses a warrior's heart, love for her people and family and has a determination to prove that she is a capable future ruler. Her life is quite sheltered, but it is all about to change when the dragons show up; meanwhile her parents are determined to marry her off to a perfect stranger. Having her life turned upside down reveals secrets that Azia has not been privy to. Feelings are surfaced that she doesn't expect and doesn't know how to deal with.
The characters are fantastic and the world building is on point. It's a fast paced adventure that has you hooked in from page 1. I love the way that the story is told, one chapter represents one day in real time. I look forward to the continuation of this story as I can not wait to see what develops!!
Princess Azia Rose always lived in the shadow of her adopted mother the infamous Sleeping Beauty, but this did bother her as she liked being independent. She has been content to just look after her disabled brother secretly play fighting him with swords behind the castle. Until her parents decided due to an unrest among the dragons she must marry in preparation for ruling the kingdom. The hijinks that ensue after this bombshell is a fairy tale within itself. This story is a continuation of the classic fairy tale of Sleeping Beauty and it is a good adaptation unfortunately just as it starts to get good it abruptly ends. Despite the lack of closure I still would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and or classic fairy tales. The characters are well-rounded and believable. The plot once the introduction of the characters is complete is fast paced and enjoyable. Despite leaving you wanting more, this book as well worth the read.
I received an ARC copy of this book for an honest review. I have read and reviewed book's by J.A. Armitage before and have loved them. This book has left me wondering whether I've enjoyed it or not. At times I've felt really annoyed at the main character Azia, I realise she is only eighteen, but the way she acts to say she is a princess and heir to the throne is very bratty. I enjoyed the idea of the book and what happens after the happily ever after, I think with this series the first book lays the groundwork and the second book will be better. I will read the second instalment, as like I said I do normally enjoy the way J.A. Armitage writes. And this book isn't bad, but has left me divided.
Didn't know what to expect from this book but it really surprise me in the best way possible!!! 🤩 We are used at the HEA finales but, what happens after that? 🤔 Well, look no further, this book is the amazing start of a retelling collection that you will totally love 😍 Queen of Dragons is the story of Azia, Sleepy Beauty's daugther, where we find details not told in the original fairy tale and much more 🤓 Great world building and story line, awesome FMC: Azia is an amazing young lady with a gentle and noble heart, strong will and determination, and twists and turns that will keep you turning pages and wanting for more. Thank God we will have a new book each week, so no long waiting, yay!!! 😉❤️
Happily Ever After - that is how fairy tales traditionally end, but real life does not end that way. New trials and tribulations always arise. In this case, life is about to become interesting for the Sleeping Beauty and her husband, who have coasted along without planning for future troubles. That leaves their daughter and heir Azia woefully and naively unprepared for the challenges of courtship and rulership. Her father's lack of competence, the appearance of dragons and the pushiness of an undesired betrothed do not help. I am beginning to like Azia - she is spirited and opinionated, but very unprepared for life in general. I foresee some very difficult growing up experiences for her. So what happens next?
Sleeping Beauty's adopted daughter has reached her own young adulthood and wants to learn to defend herself. She doesn't have much interest in gaining her own Prince Charming to defend her, but everything is not as it should be in the kingdom and she might need a white knight. Fortunately (or perhaps not) she suddenly has two. This story has a lot of promise, but it's more like a first act than the whole play. We get to meet the players, get a bit of background and, some well crafted action scenes and a cliffhanger ending, but when push comes to shove, not a lot happens. It's interesting however, and well enough written and narrated that I'll head back for book two, if only to find out whether she marries her parents choice or her fake lover.
When I first started reading this book, Azia REALLY got on my nerves. She was so bratty it made me almost DNF the book😂 but I pushed through and she slowly started to not be as annoying to me!
However, the story was absolutely amazing!!! I got excited hearing that Aladdin was running a country or city (can’t remember which one on the top of my head) next to them and that him and the king are good friends!!
The dragons bow down to her??? I BEG YOUR FINEST PARDON?!?!?!? QUEEN OF DRAGONS, Milo called her that first🥹🥹
I’m so looking forward to seeing who she ultimately chooses to marry (I imagine it’s gonna be sped up considering her mother has fallen back under a curse)
What a cliffhanger that was!!!

A great book with an amazing storyline and characters. Sleeping Beauty has a daughter, Princess Azia, whom is a talented, strong willed young lady that will do anything to prevent her marriage, especially to the snobby, powerful fae, Caspian. After an interesting first meeting she knows Caspian is not the one so she has to say something to get out of it. Unfortunately, lies have consequences and this little white lie brings a list of complications. This book has some awesome twist, action, and suspense with an ending that will have you coming back for more. I look forward to the next installment. I received a free advanced copy and enjoyed every minute.
OMG this is just great! So excited to read this blurb : “What happened after the happily ever after? You all know the story of your favorite fairytale, but did you ever wonder what happened after the fairytale ending? Well we know. Not all afters end up happily, sometimes the real adventure starts much later...” This series follows fairytales 18 years after and OMG you will not be able to put this down! This first book is a twist on sleeping beauty’s happily ever after and follows her daughter! A thrilling read filled with action, adventure, dragons and a kick ass princess , I cannot wait to read more!
