Three issues in and we're already getting a fill in artist on Excalibur and an fill in story on New Mutants that doesn't even have any New Mutants in it. I guess all the previous young X-Men teams are all considered New Mutants now? Both books were still better than Fallen Angels, which is really only good for fill in toilet paper during the toilet paper shortage of 2020. X-Men, Marauders, and X-Force continue to be strong books though.
Třetí book, třetí díly a New Mutants už stihly změnit scénaristu a spolu s ním vlastně všechno (tým i lokaci příběhu), tohle bude ještě legrace. X-men se zlepšují, Marauders a X-Force drží kvalitu. Pořadí po třetím booku:
1. Marauders 2.-3. X-Men / X-Force 4. New Mutants 5. Excalibur 6. Galerie obálek 7. Náhodný leták z Billy 8. Nový díl Strážné věže ... ?. Fallen Angels
The X books are continuing to create a unique and cohesive world. Many of the #3 issues deviated from the other issues. But they added to the world of Dawn of X. Initially I was skeptical of collecting the issues like this. But I’m beginning to appreciate the sentiment.
Liked this and the comics are rated as above in order of favourite to least favourite. It's mainly the storyline that is really pushing X-Force out in front of the rest for me but the artwork compliments its content so well.
Fallen angels I could give or take. I'll finish it for the sake of completion.
Everything else in between is just plodding along. I'm hoping Excalibur get's better. By no means are these bad X-Men comics. The story is the best it's been in years
Still having a lot of fun with these runs, but this volume wasn't as good as the last couple by just a touch. First of all, a few of these issues either slowed their main plots down or made them come to a screeching halt entirely (Marauders and New Mutants, specifically).
Secondly, they are way over using the "our enemies have mutant dampening powers" trope. Everyone from shadowy organizations to random gangs now have tech that can totally render a mutant's powers obsolete. Not only is that as lazy as throwing kryptonite at superman, it totally makes all of the struggle that rogue has been through her whole life with her power pointless.
Still not completely blowing my mind, but everything is tight, well drawn and engaging. Some of these story beats are really cool. I def prefer Duggan New Mutants (which should really be a separate title called New X-Men) to Hickman New Mutants, which is mostly lost my interest. Still, X-Force and Fallen Angels remain awesome. Excalibur is still boring, X-Men is still adequate and I really like Marauders. On to #4!
Kind of a mixed bag compared with the previous volumes (and still not on par with the high level set by House of X/Powers of X), but the saving grace are the issues of Marauders, X-Force, and Fallen Angels, which have been consistently good. Excalibur continues to be the weak link overall, but this particular issue of Hickman’s X-Men was just...strange...and involves Cyclops, the Black King, and the White Queen squaring off against high-tech...geriatrics? With an aversion to four-letter words? Yeah...it’s a weird one, but opens up some interesting avenues for future exploration, even though it feels supremely goofy. New Mutants abandons the previous two issues in space to bring in a different set of characters and a new Earth-based situation, which feels like a pretty abrupt departure with another arc already in process and still unresolved. Onto book 4.
Overall 2.5 and I’m being pretty strict here. I still like reading these but god knows where each story is going. Many follow their own stories and characters but so far X-Men, X-Force, and New Mutants is just hopping all over the place (x-force less so, but…). I’ll keep at it. Feels like it may be rewarding in the end.
Hard to review the books in this format X-men is a 4 Marauders a 3.5 Excalibur a 3 New Mutants a 3.5 X-force 3 Fallen angels a 1.5? Something like that.

House of X/Powers of X reforged the X-Men, creating a utopia for all mutants to cherish, regardless of their history. This opened the door to many adventures, as the X-Men and other teams work to keep the peace, protect mutants, and forge alliances. Dawn of X Vol. 3 compiles multiple series into one cohesive reading order: X-Men #3, X-Force #3, Marauders #3, Excalibur #3, Fallen Angels #3, New Mutants #3.
Review:
I hate how far behind I am in reading the Krakoan era, but hey! At least I’m finally getting through it, and I’m likewise enjoying many of the twists and turns that have taken place thus far. I know it won’t last, but nothing good ever does in the comic book world.
You can already see the cracks in the foundation. Maybe that’s hindsight, though, since I’ve also been reading through From the Ashes. As always, there are some series I’m finding myself more invested in than others.
X-Men #3: I remember these three er, Gardeners, for lack of a better description, so I must have previously read this issue. It’s tongue-in-cheek and puts the X-Men up against a very different kind of foe. It’s funny, but I feel like they could have done more with it.
X-Force #3: I love this team. No, really. I’ve never hated Kid Omega like some others, and seeing him with Domino and Wolverine is quite the change-up, but in a chaotic and fun way.
Marauders #3: Ugh. Sebastian Shaw. Can I just leave it at that? No? The sudden change in pacing is jarring, so I can only assume that the series is setting up for something more. That or this issue has strong filler vibes.
Excalibur #3: I’ll confess that Excalibur is probably my least favorite of the set, thus far. It feels disconnected from the rest, minus the mutants who keep running through the pages. I’m sure it’ll all make sense to me soon, but I’m not there yet.
Fallen Angels #3: Okay, so I’m also not wild about Fallen Angels. I don’t love the art, and the story just isn’t grabbing me. Does it have potential? Sure. But we’re not there, as far as I’m concerned.
New Mutants #3: I know the shift to a different group of younger mutants is probably a bit jarring, but this story has so much heart! It made me happy to see. This issue follows up on an AWOL X-Men character.

Reviewing these Dawn of X books by title (I read them as a run for the first 6 issues)… Overall 3.5 stars
X-Men – This was a great run, creative, and I really dug the team. The art was great, and I’ve really grown to like Hickman’s writing. The first issue was very introductory, but the title really hit its pace in book 3. Although the Hordeculture was kind of boring, I really liked the Quiet Council development and book 4 really nailed it when Quiet council met with other world leaders, it was just a great chemistry and power play. I liked the development of some of the characters (Armor and Storm) as well. The 6th book really left a cliffhanger with Mystique and Destiny, I’ll have to pick up future books to see where that plot heads. – 4 stars
Marauders was next. I had very low expectations of this run, based on the characters involved, but holy cow, it turned out to be a surprise hit. Kitty “Call me Kate” Pryde really established herself as a major X-character, and being the central focus of the books lent itself to some deep character development. This may be the best title of the run, and I was totally surprised by that. – 5 stars
Excalibur was my next run. I like Betsy Braddock (usually in her Psylocke form), and can tolerate Rogue and Gambit, but this hodgepodge team felt strained, and the ‘mythos’ of Arthurian lore didn’t really resonate with me in these pages. All around it was just a weird book, and apart from some development for Betsy and Rogue, the writing fell flat to me. Not worth reading, really, but I did like Roguepocalypse. – 3 stars
New Mutants was the next title. Historically, this and X-Force usually were my favorite X-teams, but despite having pulled together some of the classic characters, this book was all around weird. The “space” story was weird and I didn’t like it, and to make it worse, you only get half the story before they cut to a completely unrelated story for 2 books (which was also just a mediocre story). The only takeaway I got from this run was that Boom-Boom establishes herself as a hard hitter, the rest of the book sadly sucked pretty hardcore, which is a huge disappointment to me!! – 2 stars
X-Force was the next run, and it felt a little slow, but I liked the team that appeared. Any time that Logan and Domino team up, you have a hit on your hands. I typically don’t care for Forge, and especially dislike Kid Omega, but at least Forge has a good presence in these pages, and has some cool weaponry as he develops and integrates Krakoan technology into stuff. Black Tom is weird, and may develop later, but this run just made him really odd. I did like Jean’s appearance and raw power as well as Sage’s prowess, but Beast was rubbing me the wrong way. – 4 stars
Fallen Angels is the final run. I love the team of Psylocke/X-23/Kid Cable (I wish it were regular Cable). The premise of the book is a bit odd (it reminds me of Resident Evil), but with that out of the way, the team-up works. Overall the story seemed disjointed, and the art (especially Psylocke’s face) was awkward. – 3 stars

For the Dawn of X books, I’m reviewing each issue individually
X-Men #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall, this issue was super fun. The art was great, Hickman’s writing and humour was on point, and the plot with these new old lady villains seems totally ridiculous but also absurdly fun. Love it.
Marauders #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My favourite issue of Marauders so far! The way the writers structure Krakoa is so interesting to me, and I love learning about the founding of a mutant nation. The plot between Shaw and his son was also excellent- super excited to see where that goes!
Excalibur #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ YES! FINALLY! I liked this series but overall it was just okay so far- until now! Issue 3 was great! Fun banter between the characters, love the drama between Betsy and Brian, Shogo as a dragon is so cool and all the action in this issue is so fluid and clear and I love it. Plus that tease at the end with MI-13 is pretty coooooool! Loved this issue!
New Mutants #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Yes. Yes. Absolutely yes. This issue had such fun characters, great art and a super interesting story. Love that cliffhanger too! New Mutants my beloved 🫶 also Glob is my goat.
X-Force #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This series still has my favourite cast out of any of them by far, and each issue has been excellent. Not much else for me to say beyond that, though I did like the debate of getting tired of dying- I love hearing Charles speak as well. Always nice.
Fallen Angels #3: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ The first issue of Fallen Angels I really liked! Great action, intriguing villain, good cliffhanger and pleasebeokaycablepleasebeokay
Overall, I’d give this volume 4.75- Fallen Angels Is the only thing holding this book back, and even then it’s only holding it back a little.

Many of the third issues of the new X-series check in on characters we haven't dealt with in a while:
Marauders gives us Egg and Shinobi Shaw, Excalibur's use of Rictor in the story has me intrigued to see where the story is going (though I could always do without Pete Wisdom), and New Mutants gives us Armor, Glob, Boom-Boom, Sage, Beak and Angel (not Archangel, the Angel from Grant Morrison's New X-Men run) and their kids.
Apart from rolling my eyes at Pete Wisdom's return, I thought al of these check-ins were thoughtful and a good way to expand characters without making everything too confusing. New Mutants, in particular, does a great job at giving us a context for these characters instead of just assuming everyone knows the entire X-continuity. But Ed Brisson also does it in a way that isn't tiresome for those of us who Have read most to all of X-continuity. I'm greatly looking forward to seeing what else he does on the title.
The only really weak spot in this volume is the consistently underwhelming Fallen Angels. I think the art is consistently too dark, the open panel layout makes every image seem swallowed, and Bryan Hill doesn't make any of his characters, hero or villain, in any well compelling. The story is hot tap water on a hot day.
Getting to this volume was totally worth reading through the less impressive volume two. I continue to believe this is the best way to read the 2019/2020 X-books.
X-Men #3 is fun but I mean... Hickman went a little over the top here, getting a team to face off and lose against a couple of golden girls. It was still enjoyable and tongue in cheek but this doesn’t feel like a flagship title yet, I want more from X-Men. 7/10
Marauders #3 is good but disappointing. The series takes a break from its usual antics and crew and dedicates the whole issue to Sebastian and Shinobi Shaw.the art changes too as Michele Bandini takes over. I had a good time with it but I was expecting something totally different, I missed the humour. 7/10
Excalibur #3 flows a lot better than the previous two but I’m still not 100% sure of what is going on and I’m so not invested that I don’t really care either. On the art side I enjoyed it more, there were some fun panels and I love Shogo dragon. 6/10
New Mutants #3 is a disappointment. First off fill in artist Flaviano is a significant downgrade from Reis. And for the story... what the fuck?! Brisson completely breaks off from what Hickman did last issue and gives us a half baked family drama at the Beaks... 5/10
X-Force #3 is surprisingly the best issue so far. The colours from last issue are fixed and the story finds its focus as X-Force is officially created by Prof. X. 8/10
Fallen Angels #3 is one of the ugliest looking comics I’ve ever looked at. Kudranski and Darmata are horrible. Hill’s script is just as bad as well. It’s a confusing cluster fuck where nothing makes sense and you are not entertained. 3/10
This has dropped a bit for me as a pack. Many stuff were on my nerves in this one. I have a feeling that HoX/PoX might have set a bar a tad too high for many of these to reach. There is a long way ahead though I think I'm dropping few things.
X-MEN (2019) #3 : 4.5/5 Now this is worth the hype. I am absolutely enjoying how things are turning out in this. Everything seems to be falling into place and this is a good x-men story. I just have missed the feeling it stirred in me as a kid and I'm glad it's back.
X-FORCE (2019) #3: 3.5/5 Not as good as the previous issue but I think it was a descent mid-arch. But I'm certainly curious what is about to come. It feels like it's headed somewhere good.
MARAUDERS (2019) #3: 3/5 Felt like a filler to me. But it was enough to keep me there and i still love the characters and the way they are put in place and shaped.
NEW MUTANTS (2019) #3 : 2.5/5 Okay just a question... Where are the new Mutants? Cause these are more like junior high. The story surprisingly saved itself but I'm still waiting on characters. I'm just going to give it one more shot.
FALLEN ANGELS (2019) #3: 2/5 All i can say it saved it self. It was a filler for a story that felt like a filler but i think it's worth a shot considering the previous issues.
EXCALIBUR (2019) #3 :1.5/5 Well that was another UTTER MESS. I think that was it for me with this one. I gave it a shot and it really killed my buzz because I was actually excited for this and i did give it a chance but definitely dropping it here.
Three issues in, and only X-Men and X-Force really engage me. In the future, I'll be reading these two first, back-to-back, instead of going through the other series. X-Men introduces a new group of villains and they are...unexpected, funny, but a threat. Hickman is clearly sowing the seeds (ahem) for a future showdown. X-Force continues to be the hard-edged story telling. It's the aggressive, all-out response from humans you would expect.
Excalibur I still don't understand what the point of it all is. I also don't get why Apocalypse continues to look different in this book vs. the main X-Men book.
Marauders is still intriguing but it's clearly a large chess game where everything is still getting set up. I just hope there's a worthwhile payoff.
New Mutants took a little change for the better, abandoning the original New Mutants characters for some of the "newer" mutants like Beak and Armor. It was touching but still feels like I'm following teenagers (which it is) and I'm too old for that.
Fallen Angels continues to be a "who cares" book. It's right there with Excalibur and I'll probably stop wasting my time reading it.
This volume still felt like a bit of a mixed bag between the different adventures everyone is on. It's notable that the X-Force book is getting a lot more interesting as they're solidifying the idea to be more like creating an intelligence arm for the mutant nation of Krakoa, especially given the clandestine forces working against them. Marauders slowed down with the arguments about who should become the Red representative in the Hellfire Club. Fallen Angels is still trying to find its voice.
New Mutants took a bit of a turn and focused on other younger mutants still back on Earth and picking up some loose threads with other characters. The main X-Men book introduced...very unusual antagonists.
All in all the shape of things is that humanity isn't just letting the mutants create their little utopia without some sort of response and different groups are actively moving against Krakoa and its interests on multiple fronts. I just hope this doesn't lead to an overly complicated continuity where one can't make sense of characters being involved in multiple stories across the titles.
Three issues into this rather large X-men world and things aren't moving in a super fast pace. The book is still setting up the island and the players with only Excalibur and X-Force really pushing forward with their stories. I had a mixed overall reception of this but I felt the positive still outweighed the negative. Hickman clearly has a plan and with the large amounts of books already in the series, I suspect my opinion means little, but here we go.
Why the 3.5?
New Mutants and Fallen Angels has to be the weakest of the new series but they aren't horrible. I wanted this series of books to really kick-off are House of X and Powers of X but things have been very slow out of the gate. X-Force has to be my favourite of the new line-up and that's the only one that's pushing the action. I trust that Hickman has a plan so I'm not worried if he continues to lay the foundation. My only real complaint is that all the books have been treading water and now that they have made all the villains not villains, it's hard for them to introduce any character with menace. Time will tell on this one.
Three issues in. I think X-Men, X-Force, and Marauders have all found their footing, and I'm enjoying all three titles. Excalibur and Fallen Angels remain my least favorite books. Excalibur doesn't feel like it belongs in this lineup, and Fallen Angels feels oddly pretentious, with muddy art that doesn't always make it clear which black haired female character is which. New Mutants had been a meh title for me, but the story in this issue takes a total turn, abandoning the classic New Mutants in space and turning instead to Armor, Glob, Beak, and Angel, and it's a huge improvement for me. At this point, I'm enjoying four of these titles, with one I find dull and one I dislike. I guess that's not bad. I'd still like to see how the X-Men entirely changed their canon, though.
You know, I think I liked this better than the previous volumes.
I feel largely the same way. The core book and X-Force are really interesting. Marauders is meh. Excalibur is dumb and Fallen Angels only interests me when it's about X-23 and Cable.
To be honest, this core book was obviously the weakest of them all. The old botanist villains . . . . I mean Cyclops normally fights without his powers. They have fix this up so the old botanists have superpowers, I think.
Here, Marauders had a surprise focus on Sebastian Shaw rather than Kitty Pryde.
Oh, and New Mutants was about Beak rather than the New Mutants? (Can the Exiles be far behind? I guess they can. Far, far behind.)
Come to think of it, where's ? She's, like, the heart of the story.
I've been reading each of these "Dawn of X" collections, but it isn't the best way to enjoy the individual series. I'm starting to get a little confused as to what's going on in these six books. I'm losing track of the characters' desires/motivations, and forgetting where they are supposed to be, and why.
In each of my reviews, I've been rating the individual issues, so here we go again:
I’m basically reusing a review across this series, as it seems to hold as things go on. Overall it’s a bunch of highs and lows. Some books are consistently excellent (Marauders, X-Force, Wolverine, and it looks like X-Factor & Hellions will join that group) while some are middling to mediocre (Excalibur being the worst of the lot, plus Cable being so-so, and the main X-Men book varying in quality from one issue to the next). I’m still reading, so the overall whole is quality, and the whole setting that they’ve established is still unique and intriguing. It’s like a house of cards that we know is doomed to fall eventually, it’s just a question of when and how)
