X-Men, Marauders, and X-Force continue to shine. Fallen Angels is still garbage. Thankfully it's ending with issue 6. The books switched to a twice monthly schedule this month and we are already seeing fill in artists and interruptions to stories as artists like Rod Reis can't keep up. The bi-weekly schedule has me concerned the quality of these books will suffer.

Phew. Back on track. I was worried after the last volume - but now with this one, I'm back to enjoying every title (except for fallen Angels which I'm not reading as I am doing this in single issues and didn't bother buying that title).

Really beginning to enjoy Dawn of X now. I like the direction things are starting to go and I'm definitely hooked. :)

Rozjíždí se to líp a líp. Moc nevím, co by se muselo stát, aby to zamíchalo pořadím z minula, protože Marauders jsou pořád parádní, X-meni a X-Force s nimi drží krok.
New Mutants pořád netuším, co vlastně budou chtít dělat a doufám, že to zase nějak divně nepreskočí.

Mostly good

Excalibur is still boring, Fallen Angels has gotten a bit dull too. Marauder, X-Force and New Mutants are consistently cool, and the main X-Men title slaps. Still enjoying myself. On to 5!

All together it was 4/5 for me.
I did drop one series though and will drop another so from now on it'll probably be just four of them goin for me(i hope i don't actually need to read the rest timeline wise though)

X-MEN #4 : 5/5
Bloody hell that was goooood! It's so far my most favorite issue. The characters are at their best the story is exciting and promising and i love love them all (which is rare) but specifically Magneto in this series so far( well I just love him in general but damn this series is probably him at best) so yeah I'm quite enjoying this i hope it keeps going on the same way.

X-FORCE #4 :4/5
Well touché ! So far (aside from the X-men) this is the most consistent in storytelling and quality. It had few down moments but it's clearly headed somewhere and I'm enjoying the way characters are doing their parts they don't feel out of place or weird which is mostly what i really wanted from this.

MARAUDERS #4 :4/5
Just keep doing what you're doing, as strange as you are darling. (I just mean i really appreciate this band of misfits)

NEW MUTANTS #4 : 3/5
I guess it's safe to say it redeemed itself with the story finally (it's the 4th bloody issue for cryin out loud!!!!) Getting some shape. I hope it doesn't fall back again.

FALLEN ANGELS#4 : 1.5/5
Speaking of falling, well wasn't that an epic fall from grace for this series. I just can't bring myself to read another issue from this.

EXCALIBUR #4 : DROPPED

Read as single issues:
Marauders = New Mutants = X-Men = X-Force >Excalibur > Fallen Angels

This volume really picked up and I would say it has my favourite set of issues so far!!!
Marauders is such a fun romp and yet serious enough to really hit home!! Kitty Pryde is literally my all time fave X-Man and she is just the highlight of the entirety of Dawn of X.

New Mutants = BOOM BOOM!!! I need to say no more.
(Still on my run through of all X content, just sitting at Age of Apocalypse, but Boom Boom making a good reappearance is LONG overdue)

X-Men is getting even more interesting as we go along. This issue really shows how far ahead the leaders are planning and shows how they will achieve their goals. Don't mess with mutants!!

X-Force then directly subverts that. The art style continues to add to this and is super graphic but I LOVE IT!!!

Fallen Angels = Meh, glad only 2 issues are left. Waiting for a big reveal that will force my opinion to change but I'm not so sure that's going to come.

3 stars - X-Men: Magneto at his best, giving a clear-cut, matter-of-act statement to the world of what mutants intend to do and why.

3 stars - X-Force: Continues to be the hard-hitting action book. The art was a little weird. Not sure I like it.

2 stars - Marauders: Starting to like this, but still just ok.

2 stars - Excalibur: Still lost on this book, but I like Betsy's costume and the fact there's some resistance to her being Captain Britain.

2 stars - New Mutants: OK, but feels a little juvenile to me. Not really interested.

1 star - Fallen Angels: Definitely the worst of the bunch. Zero interest in this book.

X-Men and the Marauders are my favourites. New Mutants is okay. A lot better since we don't follow the dudes who are in space currently.

Fallen Angels is dumb. I don't know what it is trying to do.

Also I keep putting this on my superheroes shelf but it doesn't feel like anybody is doing superhero things...

A lot of cliffhangers in this volume. Stories are certainly picking

It’s hard to rate these volumes since collected volume collects a single issue of each story from that month’s release, which means you’re really reading 6 episodes of 6 different stories that happen at slightly different times. They connect though the “big picture” of x-men, but can be a little confusing since they don’t directly relate to the other stories in the volume. There are recommended reading orders (this one seems good) but no collection has it compiled close to that way. So I’ll be hoping around where I can, but otherwise just keep reading though these volumes for the time being, hoping it’ll get easier once we see where things are going.

Spring 2020 (March Live Read):

X-Men #4
I appreciate Slim & Erik's sass at each other.

This dinner party of "polite attacks" while the whole siege of the brutal attack is happening on the other hand. I'm dying as Magneto, mid-speech, is helping Cyclops a floor away with someone's weapon, after being asked nicely.

I will always love this (also always problematic) man.

Marauders #4
Hello, Ororo. I love you forever. Endstop.

Iiiiii still want to know about this magical wall between you and the world, Kate. I still don't love the art in this series. Hello, Order of the X and Mutant Worshiping Cult-man. Homines Verendi. Mhhhmmm.

*Dawn of X, Volume 4* continues Jonathan Hickman’s ambitious reinvention of the X-Men mythos, delivering a mix of thrilling action, political intrigue, and character-driven storytelling. This collection is part of the ongoing "Dawn of X" storyline, which explores the new status quo for mutants as they build a sovereign nation on the island of Krakoa. Volume 4 gathers multiple series, showcasing how different mutant factions and teams adapt to their new reality.

The strength of *Dawn of X* as a whole lies in its ability to weave together multiple ongoing plots while maintaining a cohesive and rich narrative. Volume 4 is no different. With issues from series like *X-Men, X-Force, Marauders, New Mutants,* and *Fallen Angels*, this volume balances a wide range of tones and storytelling styles—from political intrigue to personal drama, from team-based action to quiet moments of reflection.

One of the standout elements in this volume is the *Marauders* issue, which continues to follow Kate Pryde’s pirate adventures as she leads the Marauders in securing mutant refugees and protecting Krakoa's interests. The combination of swashbuckling action and clever political maneuvering makes this arc one of the most fun and engaging stories in the lineup. Kate Pryde’s development as a hardened, resourceful leader continues to be a highlight, especially as she grapples with her inability to use Krakoa’s gates—a mystery that raises questions about her future and her place within the mutant nation.

Meanwhile, *X-Force* continues to serve as Krakoa’s black-ops team, responsible for both intelligence gathering and preemptive strikes against threats. The issue in this volume dives deeper into the brutal realities of protecting Krakoa from outside forces, focusing on the ongoing rivalry with the anti-mutant organization, Xeno. The mixture of espionage and violent action that defines *X-Force* is in full force here, especially as tensions escalate with shocking moments of body horror and violence. The art, particularly in the *X-Force* section, is visceral and detailed, capturing both the beauty of Krakoa and the darker elements of the mutant’s hidden wars.

The *New Mutants* series in this volume also deserves special mention for its unique tone. It offers a refreshing departure from the darker, more serious elements found in *X-Force* or *Marauders*. This issue follows a group of younger mutants as they travel through space, bringing a more adventurous and lighthearted feel to the mix. Yet beneath the fun, there’s a sense of these characters grappling with their place in this new world order, especially as they navigate their own insecurities and desires. The cosmic scope of the *New Mutants* story contrasts sharply with the earth-bound concerns of the other series, which helps to diversify the overall narrative experience in this volume.

One of the more introspective series, *Fallen Angels*, takes a deeper look at characters like Psylocke (Kwannon) and her struggles with identity and purpose in this new era. It’s one of the more philosophical stories, exploring themes of trauma, self-discovery, and the burdens of the past. Kwannon’s arc is heavy with emotion as she tries to forge her own identity separate from Betsy Braddock, who previously occupied her body. While *Fallen Angels* has been divisive among fans due to its slower pacing and darker tone, it offers a fascinating psychological exploration of its characters that stands out against the larger action-driven plots.

The *X-Men* issues in Volume 4, helmed by Jonathan Hickman himself, continue to push forward the overarching narrative of mutantkind’s future on Krakoa. Hickman’s writing is dense with layers of meaning, often embedding political and philosophical commentary within the mutant struggle for autonomy. The focus in this volume is on world-building, as the X-Men grapple with their newfound power and influence, all while considering how to interact with the wider world. These issues are a slow burn compared to the action-heavy stories in other series, but they are packed with long-term setup and intriguing plot points that will likely pay off in later volumes.

Artistically, the volume offers a range of styles, reflecting the diversity of stories being told. *Marauders* has a bright, kinetic energy that matches the high-seas adventure tone, while *X-Force* offers darker, grittier visuals that underscore the series’ brutality. *New Mutants* leans into a more playful and vibrant aesthetic, befitting the youthful characters and their space adventures. Each series’ unique art style contributes to its specific tone, making the volume feel like a rich tapestry of the mutant world, rather than a singular, uniform narrative.

While the breadth of stories in *Dawn of X, Volume 4* is impressive, it can also be somewhat disorienting for readers unfamiliar with the structure of the crossover. The jump between different series and tones can be jarring, especially if a particular arc doesn’t resonate as strongly as others. Some of the slower, more introspective issues may feel like filler to readers more interested in the big, action-heavy moments. However, for those who appreciate the vast scope of the mutant saga and the variety of stories being told, this diversity is a strength rather than a weakness.

In conclusion, *Dawn of X, Volume 4* is a solid continuation of the bold new era for the X-Men and their fellow mutants. The stories are varied, with each series offering a unique take on how different mutants are adapting to their new world order. From the political intrigue of *Marauders* to the darker, more violent world of *X-Force*, to the cosmic adventures of *New Mutants*, this volume has something for every type of X-Men fan. It’s not without its slower moments, but the overall quality of the writing and art makes it a must-read for anyone following the *Dawn of X* storyline.

BEST book of the run!
Reviewing these Dawn of X books by title (I read them as a run for the first 6 issues)… Overall 3.5 stars

X-Men – This was a great run, creative, and I really dug the team. The art was great, and I’ve really grown to like Hickman’s writing. The first issue was very introductory, but the title really hit its pace in book 3. Although the Hordeculture was kind of boring, I really liked the Quiet Council development and book 4 really nailed it when Quiet council met with other world leaders, it was just a great chemistry and power play. I liked the development of some of the characters (Armor and Storm) as well. The 6th book really left a cliffhanger with Mystique and Destiny, I’ll have to pick up future books to see where that plot heads. – 4 stars

Marauders was next. I had very low expectations of this run, based on the characters involved, but holy cow, it turned out to be a surprise hit. Kitty “Call me Kate” Pryde really established herself as a major X-character, and being the central focus of the books lent itself to some deep character development. This may be the best title of the run, and I was totally surprised by that. – 5 stars

Excalibur was my next run. I like Betsy Braddock (usually in her Psylocke form), and can tolerate Rogue and Gambit, but this hodgepodge team felt strained, and the ‘mythos’ of Arthurian lore didn’t really resonate with me in these pages. All around it was just a weird book, and apart from some development for Betsy and Rogue, the writing fell flat to me. Not worth reading, really, but I did like Roguepocalypse. – 3 stars

New Mutants was the next title. Historically, this and X-Force usually were my favorite X-teams, but despite having pulled together some of the classic characters, this book was all around weird. The “space” story was weird and I didn’t like it, and to make it worse, you only get half the story before they cut to a completely unrelated story for 2 books (which was also just a mediocre story). The only takeaway I got from this run was that Boom-Boom establishes herself as a hard hitter, the rest of the book sadly sucked pretty hardcore, which is a huge disappointment to me!! – 2 stars

X-Force was the next run, and it felt a little slow, but I liked the team that appeared. Any time that Logan and Domino team up, you have a hit on your hands. I typically don’t care for Forge, and especially dislike Kid Omega, but at least Forge has a good presence in these pages, and has some cool weaponry as he develops and integrates Krakoan technology into stuff. Black Tom is weird, and may develop later, but this run just made him really odd. I did like Jean’s appearance and raw power as well as Sage’s prowess, but Beast was rubbing me the wrong way. – 4 stars

Fallen Angels is the final run. I love the team of Psylocke/X-23/Kid Cable (I wish it were regular Cable). The premise of the book is a bit odd (it reminds me of Resident Evil), but with that out of the way, the team-up works. Overall the story seemed disjointed, and the art (especially Psylocke’s face) was awkward. – 3 stars

Marauders is back in top form in #4. Kitty is all over this book and it’s better for it. Her hanging out with Bishop gives this an awesome buddy cop movie feel. Lucas Werneck is the third artist in 4 issues but everything looks great so no complaints. 9/10

Excalibur #4 has a fun part with Gambit working alongside Rictor but the drama between Akkaba and Excalibur is still very confusing and too poorly explained/written. I keep warming up to To’s art. 6.5/10

A little tangent before I cover New Mutant #4. Whisk(e)y has been very present in New Mutants and Marauders. That is enough to me to love them a little more. To recap, Kitty drank some of Logan’s Canadian whisky (meh) stash at at the end of the first issue and in the next one, grabs a random bottle on a shelf. Roberto wins a bottle of top shelf bourbon (yum) from the Starjammers. Sebastian Shaw discusses opening a bottle of Chichibu (extra yum) and this issue starts with Boom Boom spilling some from a bottle of whiskey so going on spelling, it’s either Irish or American but then when she drops it on the ground, we see it’s spelt as whisky so who knows 🤷‍♂️ Anyway, as a whisky geek, I highly approve 👍

New Mutant is pretty lame, despite a whisky drinking Boom Boom. Tùmulo and his crew are such a piss poor excuse for antagonists and their whole motivation is unimaginative. Feels like this was written by a high schooler on his first go at comics. Third artist in 4 issues doesn’t help either, Rod Reis art would make this pill a lot easier to go down. 5/10

First thing I want to say about X-Force, Dustin Weaver’s covers are bad. I get that they’re trying to tap into early 90s nostalgia here but I’m not bitting. Great issue, this is feeling more and more like the flagship title. This is where the real threat to the mutants is. 8/10

Kwannon is the most asinine character ever and she is so badly drawn, it’s just crazy to me that Jordan B. White and Hickman decided this was good enough to sell. Hill’s half baked story sucks and his handle of X-23 is piss poor. 2/10

X-Men with its strongest issue so far. The panache, the badassery! The mutants letting the humans know in no uncertain terms that will not be fucked with anymore. Amazing! 9.5/10

For the Dawn of X books, I’m reviewing each issue individually

Marauders #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Awesome adventure with Bishop and Kate! Lots of fun action, great art, and interesting dialogue about the alliances between the two of them and Hellfire. Looking forward to seeing where it goes!

Excalibur #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very interesting stuff! The debate of Captain Britain’s vs borders, Gambit and Rictor being ambushed by druids, and monsters invading from Otherworld? This issue was mostly setup, but setup I liked, and that stinger at the end with Rogue was GREAT!

New Mutants #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Super fun adventure! Love the bad guys, giving us a sob story before turning out to be money hungry just like the men they hate- and Boom-Boom showing up at the end was just so fun. Really liked this issue!!

X-Force #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Very cool artwork, interesting debates, nice to see Forge and loved hearing about his daily routine, and that ending! Wow!

Fallen Angels #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Apoth is such an interesting villain and this entire issue was essentially a giant monologue about his creation and purpose and I loved it.

X-Men #4: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The assassins revealed! A brilliant conversation between Magneto and several world leaders, and I LOVE the direction they’ve taken with his character. What a great read.

5 stars overall. Incredible volume. No notes.

After a bit of a mid-arc slump with volume 3, part 4 gets things back on track in a big way. This volume is chockfull of classic X-Men political relevancy, too. New Mutants gives this issue’s plot substance with its underlying motivations of industrial pollution, Big Pharma greed, and the exploitation of third-world countries by both the foreign rich and the local crime lords.

Hickman’s X-Men hits on a lot of now-topical notes following its original December 2019 release. A long oppressed class, the mutants now have their own brand-new nation and political might, and they’re using the tactics of western capitalism and democracy as a weapon against their former oppressors, shaking the hell out of the status quo. Needless to say, the elites who once kept a boot on mutant necks is none too pleased. This issue was the X-Men book I’ve been waiting for, and it’s easily the best of Hickman’s run since the House of X and Powers of X miniseries.

Benjamin Percy continues to craft a dynamo of a story with X-Force, and I love the gruesome ways he tortures and tears apart (literally) our mutant heroes. Lots of good stuff happening this time around, although Excalibur continues to be a sore spot for me...

Okay, the different books are really coming along at this point and the narrative still largely makes sense across the books. That's supposed to be the main value of reading the story in this compiled format? So things like Cable's adventure with dad seemingly take place before Psylocke dragged him and X-23 on a mission.

I'm really liking the larger political narrative that they're crafting in terms of the nation of Krakoa formally dealing with other nations. The position that the mutants present humanity is a daunting one - the claim that they are the true inheritors of the planet and they're just being generous by allowing humanity to still occupy most of the planet. Then at the same time we have X-Force representing a more aggressive response to foreign aggression - even though the story ends on a shocking cliffhanger.

The other books have things moving along at their own pace with great moments here and there. Nothing else quite floated to the top as being particularly notable.

Still just an odd way of collecting these stories being that they don't really interconnect like the crossover events of yesteryear. The titles themselves aren't in any specific order themselves, for example X-men can be the first part of one collection and then the last part of another. General review of the series:
Marauders-Fun
X-men: Random but is the flagship, lots of interesting stuff happening
Excalibur: Just nonsense, not good
New Mutants: Basically combines New Mutant Cast with some Generation X cast both historically serious books (with New Mutants having a fantasy/horror streak) now with some goofy space adventure. It's not great but I like the characters
X-Force: It's interesting, doesn't cover any new ground. It's basically the R rated stuff that's no longer really that appealing or edgey.
Fallen Angels: Just Garbage. Perfectly wasted opportunity for a Braddock/Psylocke book. It's in this volume or the next where they have some interesting panels of the two of them. Suggesting some interesting things, but it never comes to fruition.

Marauders - 4/5 - Storm!! How could a person survive two lightning bolts from the sky tho? Pyro offering kids beer lol. Kate Pryde and Bishop duo is so fun.

Excalibur - 3/5 - I'm still bored on the magic part but I'm interested to see the new Captain Britain prove her worth.

New Mutants - 3.5/5 - Still a basic hostage story, in which the antagonist's motivations are explained.

X-Force - 3.5/5 - Quiet council meeting where they investigate and form a plan of offense. I like how dangerous the enemies here, as shown in the end of the issue.

X-Men - 5/5 - Dinner scenes in fiction has always been my favorite. Xavier, Magneto, and Apocalypse attend a dinner/meeting with representatives from other powerful countries and tell them about Krakoa's plan of eventual world domination.

Fallen Angels - N/A

X-Men: The extra assassination plot wasn't necesarry and predicatable but the Davos setting made up for that. Awesome dialogue. First time the main series is my favourite. 4,5☆
Marauders: Fast paced, pushing the plot and characters foreward. Still love Kitty Pride! 4☆
X-Force: Keeps continuing to be strong, with a lot of important twists and well known characters. 4☆
New Mutants: Even better than part 3. Really like Boom-Booms teenage angst and the bakstory of the Costa Perditians 4☆
Excalibur: Still strong and stable in quality. 3☆
Fallen Angels: Getting tired of this machines are god cuberpunk stuff and the 90's metalalbum artwork. Feels out of place with the other stories. Curious how it will fit in. 2☆

I’m basically reusing a review across this series, as it seems to hold as things go on. Overall it’s a bunch of highs and lows. Some books are consistently excellent (Marauders, X-Force, Wolverine, and it looks like X-Factor & Hellions will join that group) while some are middling to mediocre (Excalibur being the worst of the lot, plus Cable being so-so, and the main X-Men book varying in quality from one issue to the next). I’m still reading, so the overall whole is quality, and the whole setting that they’ve established is still unique and intriguing. It’s like a house of cards that we know is doomed to fall eventually, it’s just a question of when and how)

Marauders #4: Some more great Kitty scenes. I'm still really enjoying this series. 5/5

Excalibur #4: still loathe the characterization of Gambit in particular & generally don't enjoy this 1/5

New Mutants #4: Drunk-off-her-ass Boom Boom shows up to a bad situation in Nebraska. Tense, but frustrating, because I don't like most of the characters (the creepy twins are monsters). 3/5

X-Force #4: I think Forge's bio-armor is kinda lame, actually, but I'm still quite liking X-Force. 4/5

Fallen Angels #4: Dark, murky art & annoying Kid Cable. I think I'd enjoy Psylocke with a different artist. 1/5

X-Men #4 : I really like how Hickman writes Magneto. 5/5

Marauders: 3.5 it was entertaining enough and it advanced the plot, but I hate that the villain is another organization that hates mutants, which even though makes sense for this book is still disappointing

Excalibur: 3 stars I’m glad the old plot is over because I didn’t like it, but it was just setup for the next arc

New mutants: 1 HATED the plot since you knew they going to eventually escape so it was just a waste of time

X-Force: 3 stars really not much happened

Fallen angels: 2.5 it should probably be 3 since I wasn’t bored out of my mind
but I don’t like the series so 2.5 it is

X-men: 5 PERFECT the intrigue, the dialogue it’s all there
