Jonathan Hickman is an American comic book writer and artist. He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF, and S.H.I.E.L.D. titles. In 2012, Hickman ended his run on the Fantastic Four titles to write The Avengers and The New Avengers, as part the "Marvel NOW!" relaunch. X-Men, Marauders, and X-Force continue to be the books to read. If New Mutants could stick to one story instead of interspersing Ed Brisson's blase story about drug gangs bothering mutants in Nebraska in the midst of Hickman's story of the actual New Mutants in space it would make the cut as well. Excalibur is boring and choppy. Fallen Angels has finally been taken out to pasture and shot with issue #6. It should have been done after issue #1.

První dávka skončila. Stojí to za to? Rozhodně. Stojí to za to všechno? Rozhodně ne.
Marauders, X-meni i X-Force jsou super, všechno to pokračuje a samozřejmě skončilo poctivými cliffhangery.
New Mutants zase skočili do své druhé linky, kterou asi ukončili? Kdoví, pořád to může být jenom konec kapitoly. První linka rozhodně neskončila a zatím čeká na pokračování cliffhangeru z minulého čísla.
Excalibur se pohnul zajímavým směrem, jsem zvědav, byť pořád se ztrácím v tom, kdo je kdo.
Fallen Angels skončili a nevypadá to, že by se hned tak vrátili. Radujme se.

most of these books had a very strong first six issues (although it's weird that New Mutants keeps jumping between two totally unrelated stories with two different groups. They should have just made two different books). Also, these collections can now finally unburden themselves from the terrible (and rightfully cancelled) Fallen Angels. If it wasn't for that dumpster fire, these all would have been 5 star collections to me.

4) New Mutants (although the Mutants in Space is great, the Beak and Angel story is pretty bad)

It makes sense that Fallen Angels was canceled after this, not sure what the point of it was anyway.

COLLECTS X-MEN (2019) #6, X-FORCE (2019) #6, MARAUDERS #6, EXCALIBUR (2019) #6, FALLEN ANGELS (2019) #6 AND NEW MUTANTS (2019) #6

By completing this "Dawn of X" collection, I have now finished each of the first wave of collections from this new era of X-Men comic books. The initial six series have each reached Issue #6. My interest in each of these books have remained relatively the same from issue to issue. Here is my ranking of the issues in this collection:

1. X-Men
2. Marauders
3. X-Force
4. Excalibur
5. New Mutants
6. Fallen Angels

Final rating for the overall collection = 3.5 stars

I believe that "Fallen Angels" has been my least favorite book in each of the first six "Dawn of X" collections, and the way Issue #6 ends, I'm wondering if that series got canceled. I wouldn't be surprised, because it was not a very engaging story. The cast had potential, but the story wasn't that great.

This has been hard for me to rate. What we have is a Hickman-led mutant initiative. The sections re-printing X-Men by Hickman and Len Yu are thrilling and amazing.
Then there is the rest of it.
Mixed quality sums up the other offerings. (But they get better as it goes,...)
But I see what they are trying to do here, and so I will be generous and give 4 stars.

ttthhaattt's totally not going to come back and bite anyone in the ass. But on the same hand, I like that these children are trying to figure how to use their powers the right way (after truly horrid earlier plots of terror), and not understanding yet the big grey space between "you can't just kill me for killing other people" and "you can't just change someone's memory to make them happy and not sad anymore"

End of Volume 6. And with the first main 6 volumes done. I have read all of Dawn X: Building a Nation, vol I. & half of Vol. 2, but there aren't volumes up in in Goodreads yet, so those will be added once they happen to exist.

For the first time in reading this series, I completely skipped one part of the story. This volume features the final issue of Fallen Angels, Vol. 1 , and I am not sorry to see it go. Each volume I talked about its overly dark art, but the real issue is the story feels empty. I really like Psylocke (formerly Kwannon), and I really like X-23 (formerly Wolverine), and I'm intrigued by the new, younger Cable. But nothing in this story led me to care about any of them.

I also think I've reached the end of my ability to read Excalibur. The Apocalypse portion of story is okay, and I started really reading X-Men in 1990, so I do enjoy the Rogue/Gambit evolution. I just don't care about Albion or Captain Britain lore. Even though Captain Britain (formerly Psylocke, but not the same Psylocke who is formerly Kwannon) is a character I've been invested in over the years, her connection to Excalibur never interested me, and this volume has done little to win me over. The pacing feels off from the other books, the dialog is flat. I'm hoping this is the next series to go.

Another let down in this issue was the X-Men story. I felt like the entire issue contained about five pages of story dragged across twenty-two pages. I liked where it started, and what it reveals about the current status quo, but there was room for much more plot in this issue.

Marauders and New Mutants were both excellent. The Hellfire Club/Krakoan Council angle doesn't seem like something that would hold my attention but Gerry Duggan is absolutely nailing this book. With every page, I wonder what he's about to do next. And the New Mutants mix of brand new characters, Morrison-era characters, and Boom-Boom (who really doesn't belong to a particular X-era) is just fun to watch evolve. I feel like we're going to be focused back on the space storyline next issue, and that's also been a blast.

I do still recommend this series for people who want to get a handle on the new X-Men status quo but it is waning in quality, and I don't have especially high hopes for the debut of the Wolverine title in the next volume.

3 stars: Marauders - Sort of an ending but the true villain is revealed. Still on the fence with this one.

2 stars: Excalibur - Another bit of closure, but clearly more to come with this particular plot thread. Feelings on this book are rapidly decreasing.

1 star: Fallen Angels - just don't really care about this version of Psylocke or her new archenemy. I'm only reading it just to be aware of what is going on. If I didn't have the issue in my hands I wouldn't even be reading it.

3 stars: New Mutants - Well the story about the "new" New Mutants just took a dark turn and brings up one or two mature ideas to think about. Really enjoyed (and felt) the visuals of Armor's frustration on that last page.

3 stars: X-Force - The art is better than the last couple of issues. Much of this is to give you an idea of Beast's mind frame now and what lengths he's willing to go to. Again, no real reason given for this departure from his previous personality. It also doesn't make sense that Jean Grey would just go along with him on some of the things that he asked her to do. More geopolitics. A little closure but yet another villain revealed for the future.

3 stars: X-Men - Love the planning ahead by Charles and Erik. Love that this is mostly about Mystique and her attitude about the current state of X-affairs. There's enough flashback to give her story a real emotion tie. Excellent issue.

● Marauders: Los mutantes logran vencer a los enviados de la organización Verendi (son unos niños pedorros) que atacó su barco y que cuentan con armaduras inhibidoras de poderes mutantes, sin embargo, logran infiltrar a ¿el nuevo? YellowJacket dentro del cuerpo de Pyro. Todo parece ser un plan de Sebastian Shaw, para matar a Kate Pryde y poner a su hijo Shinobi como el Red King. Lanza al agua a Lockhead y Kitty, tal vez no pueda ser revivida. Planea quitar a Emma del puesto de Reina Blanca para tener 3 puestos en el Consejo.
● Excalibur: Los mutantes logran entrar a Otherworld al completar el ritual cuando Rogue absorbe la energía de Apocalypsis, matándolo (aunque ya revivió en Krakoa). Quieren detener a la bruja Morgan Le Fay (actual regente de Avalon, el reino que debe proteger Capitana Britania) y recuperar a Brian Braddock, el hermano de Betsy. Psylocke lo derrota, dándose cuenta que ella puede hacer cosas buenas si se lo propone. Sinister se queda el aparato que contiene lo poco que quedó de Apoth. Acaba ya Fallen Angels, acabó bien, fue el más flojo de los x-books pero al menos el último número estuvo bien.
● New Mutants (los que no fueron al espacio, sino a buscar a Beak): Boom Boom llega L rescate de estos New Mutants liderados por Armor, que estaban en problemas por unos matones que querían las medicinas mutantes. Me encanta este equipo con Glob, Maxime y Manon. Le disparan al pobre Beak y matan a sus padres, el líder de los malos se suicida, amenazando con que el Cartel Bohem enviará más tipos por ellos. Angel (la esposa de Beak), Beak y sus hijos, no tienen alternativa más que vivir en Krakoa ahora. Los humanos echarán la culpa a los mutantes de los asesinatos, aunque sean unos mercenarios, de los humanos de Costa Perdita. El Cartel Bohem es inmenso, Túmulo (el que se suicidó), solo era uno de 6 hombres que sirven a dos tenientes, que sirven al Rey. Los gemelos Manon y Maxime les alteraron la memoria a Beak, Angel y los niños para que no estén tristes por la muerte de los padres de Beak, haciendo que crean que pasó hace años. Armor los regaña aunque no puede obligarlos a deshacerlo, sería cruel.
● X-Force: Beast es la mente maestra tras el equipo, organiza toda la inteligencia de Krakoa y organiza lo que se hace con ella, para proteger a los mutantes. Sage, Wolverine, Domino Marvel Girl y Kid Omega conforman el equipo actual, son el FBI o la CIA de los mutantes. Surgen problemas al firmar el tratado de Krakoa con el país Terra Verde, pues atacan unos equivalentes a los centinelas omega pero orgánicos, lo cual es un peligro para la raza mutante, por lo que X-force actúa fríamente y mata a todos los implicados, incluso dejando invalido al hijo del presidente de Terra Verde...pero Beast se equivoca, la criatura orgánica del hijo sigue viva y escapa.
● X-men: En el espacio Orchis reconstruye la Forja (se crean ahí Centinelas), que destruyeron los x-men al inicio de este run, Omega (la centinela calva de Orchis) empieza a ser más consciente y a evolucionar, la Doctora Gregor está construyendo a ¿Nimrod?
Nos muestran que Mystique en esa misión, antes de morir, plantó una semilla para una cosecha de invierno (portal para teletransportarse) en la estación... Mystique se infiltra en la estación como parte de Orchis y se da cuenta que la misión original falló, Nimrod esta siendo construido igualmente...pero no mató a la doctora. Irene Adler (Destiny) es lo que quiere Mystique a cambio de todo, a su esposa, que Xavier la reviva, pero se niega hasta que Mystique cumpla la misión. Irene ya le había advertido a Raven (Mystique) sobre Krakoa y las promesas que le harían después que ella haya muerto...y ya le habría pedido desde antes que la ¡Traiga de vuelta! Y si no lo hace Xavier...que destruya Krakoa.

Reviewing these Dawn of X books by title (I read them as a run for the first 6 issues)… Overall 3.5 stars

X-Men – This was a great run, creative, and I really dug the team. The art was great, and I’ve really grown to like Hickman’s writing. The first issue was very introductory, but the title really hit its pace in book 3. Although the Hordeculture was kind of boring, I really liked the Quiet Council development and book 4 really nailed it when Quiet council met with other world leaders, it was just a great chemistry and power play. I liked the development of some of the characters (Armor and Storm) as well. The 6th book really left a cliffhanger with Mystique and Destiny, I’ll have to pick up future books to see where that plot heads. – 4 stars

Marauders was next. I had very low expectations of this run, based on the characters involved, but holy cow, it turned out to be a surprise hit. Kitty “Call me Kate” Pryde really established herself as a major X-character, and being the central focus of the books lent itself to some deep character development. This may be the best title of the run, and I was totally surprised by that. – 5 stars

Excalibur was my next run. I like Betsy Braddock (usually in her Psylocke form), and can tolerate Rogue and Gambit, but this hodgepodge team felt strained, and the ‘mythos’ of Arthurian lore didn’t really resonate with me in these pages. All around it was just a weird book, and apart from some development for Betsy and Rogue, the writing fell flat to me. Not worth reading, really, but I did like Roguepocalypse. – 3 stars

New Mutants was the next title. Historically, this and X-Force usually were my favorite X-teams, but despite having pulled together some of the classic characters, this book was all around weird. The “space” story was weird and I didn’t like it, and to make it worse, you only get half the story before they cut to a completely unrelated story for 2 books (which was also just a mediocre story). The only takeaway I got from this run was that Boom-Boom establishes herself as a hard hitter, the rest of the book sadly sucked pretty hardcore, which is a huge disappointment to me!! – 2 stars

X-Force was the next run, and it felt a little slow, but I liked the team that appeared. Any time that Logan and Domino team up, you have a hit on your hands. I typically don’t care for Forge, and especially dislike Kid Omega, but at least Forge has a good presence in these pages, and has some cool weaponry as he develops and integrates Krakoan technology into stuff. Black Tom is weird, and may develop later, but this run just made him really odd. I did like Jean’s appearance and raw power as well as Sage’s prowess, but Beast was rubbing me the wrong way. – 4 stars

Fallen Angels is the final run. I love the team of Psylocke/X-23/Kid Cable (I wish it were regular Cable). The premise of the book is a bit odd (it reminds me of Resident Evil), but with that out of the way, the team-up works. Overall the story seemed disjointed, and the art (especially Psylocke’s face) was awkward. – 3 stars

I have to say that I enjoyed this volume a bit more than the first 5. I'm starting to get a feel for everything that is going on and while I don't love the overall direction, there is still quite a bit to like.

For example, that issue of X-men with Mystique and an almost behind the curtain peek at what is going on. It was dark and foreboding and just perfect.

Which is why I feel a bit of whiplash with these titles. There has been this undertone of mystery and darkness (why no precogs? for instance) running since House/Powers and I really dig the potential of that... Is Krakoa brainwashing people somehow? Is that why so many characters just seem off? Is Xavier even Xavier? (Last time we saw him before this series, he was a combination of Charles and Fantomex, right?)... There is this dark undercurrent and don't get me wrong - I am totally fine with a slow burn. But the tone of these books is so all over the place. Some of them seem like they are leading towards something big and some of them feel like they don't have any idea where they are going. Some are outright goofy while others seem apocalyptic. Events in one don't seem to have a lot of bearing on the other books... Even as I am coming around and enjoying these books, I am having a hard time with the lack of cohesion in the series.

Despite that, (I imagine it would feel a bit more guided if I were reading each series on its own...) I want to once again applaud Marvel for releasing these volumes this way. It takes me back to the days of reading individual issues (there isn't a comics store within hundreds of miles of me so those days are done) and I think that alone has kept me buying the books when I may have wandered away otherwise.

Edit: Also, is the brutal, almost evil Beast really bugging anyone else? When X-force first existed, Beast was vehemently opposed to it... Not to mention his characterization during the Messiah crossovers. Yet another character who feels really off to me. He has come a long way from being the conscience of the team and it does not really feel earned in my opinion.

Shaw is EVIL?!? WHAAAAT? Who could’ve seen that coming??? Jokes aside though, this was a very fun issue, and I am very afraid for Kate’s safety. The log Yellowjacket kept was also hillarious and I was not expecting it. Very fun issue! Not a ton a ton of plot, but what was there was all excellent!

Excalibur #6: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Felt a little bit rushed, but I liked the twists and the conflicts and everything involved. Art is unsurprisingly pretty again, I just feel like this series took a total 180 and started going too fast rather than too slow.

Fallen Angels #6: ⭐️⭐️✨

New Mutants #6: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
AWESOME ISSUE! Drug cartel gone for now, but how will the world react?!? Boom-Boom is unsurprisingly super fun, art is great, action is awesome and hoooooly crap Maxime and Manon are kinda scaring me! Hopefully they learn from their mistakes…

X-Force #6: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I thought it was really interesting how this issue showed Beast’s take on controlling X-Force, wishing he had to do nothing but taking control out of necessity. The confession from Xavier about wishing to die was also super interesting and not something I was expecting! What isn’t surprising though is that the reason he comes back is because his people need him. That part was super in character. Also plant zombies. Cool!

X-Men #6: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well now that I have had a chance to read this far into the regular comics coming from these new Hickman run I think I have a grasp of what to expect from here on out. Hickman seems to want to very slowly build a world. Like a very long sci fi novel. And the beginning chapters of X-Men and X-Force seem to set the world up and slowly build on themselves. I really just hope the payoff is worth the buildup. It's fun to read some of the time and other times it feels like an exposition dump. Marauders and Excalibur are still being written like a comic book and the former is much more interesting than the latter. New Mutants is strange because someone made the poor decision to share two stories in one title and alternate between the two. Both stories are actually good, but they should have had their own title from the start. And now the main X-Men title is carrying the main story along. It's now much better than when it started, but could really use a better artist. Anyway, this jumbled pile of reactions is my response to volume 6. I guess I should leave this review like this since the book itself is kind of a jumble. A little bad and a lot of good stories, all with very different tones.

Okay, most trade paperbacks round out stories by 5-6 issues, so we get a lot of initial arcs coming to a close. And it's a mixed back.

Biggest letdown was probably Fallen Angels - big dramatic story, uneven art, and ultimately ends with a sad and unfulfilling conclusion. X-Force got better over time, but it's still not great. X-Men feels oddly episodic as it jumps around events. Excalibur remains very WTF in terms of overall narrative flow and what the heck Apocalypse is up to.

New Mutants started strong, but the Earth-based team just wasn't as fulfilling as the original New Mutants out in space. Plus the differences in art between the two also stress the differences between them. Marauders also had a strong start and continue to have a lot of potential, but I'm not too enamored with this Sebastian Shaw angel.

On the whole, a lot of the arcs focused on mutants preparing to face off against humanity resisting their dominance. But this book concludes by reminding us that some of biggest problems that mutantkind faces are other mutants, especially those we previously knew to be villains and who are now just supposed to be happy, contributing citizens of Krakoa.

New Mutants #6: I feel like a lot of this is going for shock value, rather than telling a good story. Still, it held my interest. I continue to loathe some of these characters, and I'm horrified that since Krakoa doesn't have laws about hurting your fellow mutants, then some of the reprehensible acts in this issue won't be punished. At all. Like....fuck that. (But maybe this is leading up to Nightcrawler's series? Laying groundwork for a larger story?) 4/5, because apparently this has me at least thinking

X-Force #6: hoo boy. I see all the initial arcs of the books are really going for strong endings to lead into the next main arcs. 5/5

X-Men #6: Love this Mystique focused issue--love the glimpse into the mission from the Powers of X. Love the implications of the ending. When are people going to notice the lack of pre-cogs? Hmmm... 5/5

X-Force: 5☆ Deepens the grey area and the consequences of the choices the x-men made. Love it.
X-Men: 4,5☆ Love that Mistique gets some weel deserved pagetime. Great build-up.
Marauders: 4☆ overall still the strongest 'Dawn of X' title. Great cliffhanger and wonderfull art (glad that this artist returned!).
New Mutants 4☆: Back on the farm. Lovely style and man i like the writing of these teenagevoices.
Excalibur: 3,5☆ Nice twist with apocalypse, makes me curious for the things to come.
Fallen Angels: 2☆ Glad this is over. Could follow what was happening during the fights and overall feels as only a way to have Psylocke owning Mr. Sinister.

Marauders #6. I really, really hate Sebastian Shaw. 8/10

Excalibur #6 was not very good, probably the weakest so far. 5/10

Fallen Angels is a horrible comic book, it’s an insult to the fans. 0/10

New Mutants #6 is also the weakest book in its series so far. It’s full of unearned cheapshots and it’s poorly drawn. 4/10

X-Force faces a new threat straight out of Swamp Thing, it’s a big change of pace from the previous issues, especially on the visual side but it still a fun ride. 7/10

X-Men #6 introduces us yet again to a new threat and this time it comes from within. Great issue that ties in closely to HoXPoX. 8/10

For most books, this would mark the end of the first arc. Not sure if that applies for the current X-Men line. This was, overall, the strongest Dawn of X volume. Fallen Angels still isn't good, but at least it's over. X-Men, X-Force, and Marauders remain excellent, especially this particular issue of X-Men. New Mutants apparently wraps up the Nebraska story in a way that's genuinely surprising on multiple levels. Excalibur is the weakest of the books that are continuing from this point, but even this one seems to finding itself, and I really like how Howard is writing Rogue. Overall, I'm excited about the future of the five remaining books.

I’m basically reusing a review across this series, as it seems to hold as things go on. Overall it’s a bunch of highs and lows. Some books are consistently excellent (Marauders, X-Force, Wolverine, and it looks like X-Factor & Hellions will join that group) while some are middling to mediocre (Excalibur being the worst of the lot, plus Cable being so-so, and the main X-Men book varying in quality from one issue to the next). I’m still reading, so the overall whole is quality, and the whole setting that they’ve established is still unique and intriguing. It’s like a house of cards that we know is doomed to fall eventually, it’s just a question of when and how)
