Unfortunately there's no two ways about it. This was a bad volume. It was 100% the worst one so far. But why is this? Well, first and foremost, it was filler. 100% filler.
Mamako goes into a tournament to be best mom and win a photo album. Riveting stuff. With the exception of two of the villains mentioning something in the epilogue, this entire volume was pointless. I believe the phrase is "This could have been an email".
You don't learn anything new about the characters, nobody grows, and Mamako is as annoying as ever. See, the biggest issue i have with this series so far is that the author gives Mamako a single personality trait. Being a mom. There's nothing else to her character. She's apparently god tier in everything from cleaning to cooking to fighting. She literally on one of the pages shows she has 100 in every stat which is boring. Every time we see her on screen she talks about being a mom and how she loves her son. It's fine to love being a mom, but being a mom can't be your ONLY DEFINING CHARACTER TRAIT.
The series is 11 volumes, so we're almost halfway through and we haven't learned anything about her. Her likes, her dislikes, her dreams and hobbies OUTSIDE being a mom. We haven't seen her weaknesses, her failings as a person, her growth. Nothing like that. It's all been "Tee hee i'm a mom!" and it gets old fast. It's kind of like how in "Overlord" it gets tiring because the MC is so overpowered and is never threatened by anything. A story without conflict, internal or external is BORING.
This volume just had her go through a tournament and basically easily win everything. it's DULL. and it doesn't advance the story at all. it's just there to be filler mcfiller and the fillersons.
The only time the MC is questioned is by her son and then the son is made out to be wrong and Mamoru to be correct. At this point, you're hitting Mary Sue territory. I'm continuing the series because i'm hoping we're going to have revelations at some point about her weaknesses and how she's NOT perfect, but i could just be hoping for something that's not going to happen.
You notice how in this review i'm more complaining about the direction of the series rather than this specific volume? Well that's because nothing HAPPENS in this. She fights in a tournament using mom skills against other moms. That's literally it.
The further this series goes, you can tell Dachima (the author) has some STRONG Oedipus complex going on. Like, if i were his mother and read this (which he supposedly wrote this in homage to) i'd be EMBARRASSED. I'd be like "wtf son? That's weird."
Overall the point is this. give Mamako some flaws. Show she's weak in some parts and don't have people immediately pat her head and tell her she's amazing. Let her fail. Let her have flaws. Because my GOD was this volume boring and pointless.
To give you an idea, this 185 page Light novel took me 10 days to read. by comparison "Insomnia" by Stephen King is 770 pages and that took me 7. So yeah... you can tell i didn't exactly have drive to finish this one.
All in all. Absolutely weakest so far. i'm HOPING volume 6 is better and we get back on track. But if 6 is as bad as this one (I already own 6) i might drop out afterwards. Because Mamako's perfection is really starting to get on my nerves.

Look, if you like the material here, you do. It doesn't work for me. I've now read 5 of them and that's it. Our library doesn't have any more and thank goodness they don't. I'm hoping they keep it that way. Not to mention all the oedipal stuff still going on, in this one Masato lifts a 12-year old girl on his shoulders so she can see out a window. Not in an of itself anything to rave about except that Inaka has him thinking about being sandwiched between her thighs. A 12-year old!
So the main idea is a Mom-skills tournament. Of course over 10,000 mothers show up. And only 16 can actually compete. Single elimination means that even of those 16 we barely see a handful of them actually do anything and yet every time a Mom is needed all 16 of them get mentioned again. Like Inaka was being paid by the word and needed to pad the paycheck.
Verdict: I'm done with this series. If you happen to like it, great. Keep at it. I'm just glad I got it from the library rather than trying to get rid of some books I'd never read again.

This was far and away my favorite volume. It’s still what it is, a dumb comedy light novel- but the jokes land much better this time around, the characters grow a little, the villains from the last volume reappear here and are both cartoon silly and it having just one plot the whole volume (a Mom Competition) works well to add cohesion.
It won’t change anyone’s mind but if you’ve gotten through the first four and enjoyed them well enough, stay with it.
