Ricky is a fourteen-year old Honduran boy forced to flee north when gang members threaten violence against him and his mother. We follow him on his arduous journey north. He is smuggled across the border into the U.S. where he immediately witnesses two murders. This suspense-thriller is primarily the story of how Ricky comes under the protection of the police to eventually give testimony against the murderers. There is a national security angle when we come to understand that the drug cartels are just as interested in high tech surveillance techniques as are the U.S. Border Patrol and the U.S. military. McCullen’s novel is not a mystery as such – we know who commits the crimes and why. Rather, this is a fictional story based on actual conditions in the real world with a strong element of suspense. By the time they complete this book, readers be accurately and well-informed about the plight of individuals in the Northern Triangle (Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador), why they are often forced to leave home, details of the dangerous journey north, the perils of crossing the border, and why, especially, so many of these migrants are teenage boys. This book is well-written. It needs a proofreader, a copy editor and better formatting. It qualifies for a 4.5 rating.

Good thriller

This was a good thriller with some good insights as to what goes on along our southern border. The story is very realistic and could be happeni g right now. It points out the heartbreaking crisis about the immigration problems on the border. A good read.
