Seeker. Just one whisper of that word might get me killed…
I'm not the Seeker of Seven, destined to be bound to the most powerful of the magic and master races. To be used by monsters to kill a monster. Nope, that’s not me.
I’m ordinary. Forgettable. So what if I see things in the mirror that aren’t there? So what if my past is a blank slate? That proves nothing.
But then I meet Jazz, a shifter who saves me from getting my blood drained by snarky vampires. Dragons, sorcerers, druids—they’re all real. And now everyone’s calling me a clairvoyant and a half-blood.
At least Jazz is an enticing distraction from the insanity my world has become. Too bad his best friend Ben hates me on sight. And then there’s Zac, who sees me even when I’m trying to hide. Maybe there are some perks to being thrown headfirst into a world of magic…
But those vampires? They’re not done with me yet. Whispers have a way of making themselves heard.
Seeking Magic is a medium-burn reverse harem romance, first in a series, and not suitable for readers under the age of eighteen.
It’s a great start to a new series. So far I’m hooked, the writing is good, the plot isn’t difficult to follow and everything flows nicely. It’s nicely paced as well. The story is somewhat predictable but I expect that to change soon, plus you can only be predictable so much since they are clairvoyant.
I’m really loving all the characters. I love Zac, and I think Jazz is cool, though Jazz from Jasper is an interesting nickname to me. I love Ben, I think his life has sucked until Indy came into his life.
It’s a good easy story though.
I do expect it to not be easy as we go but as a set up book it’s great.
This book terribly lacks in descriptions. First, the characters. We have no idea what Jazz looks like (at least for the first half of the book that I read) despite the fact there were many, many opportunities where it would have been natural to describe his built, his eyes, his hair color, his features, anything... but no, nothing. Same for all the other characters who aren't Indigo. So throughout the book I'm just picturing faceless humanoid forms. Just great.
Same for the environement. She comes to a freaking magic city and the only thing we get is 'it looked like any other city' and that there's a magic fountain. I have no idea what it looks like. No clue how big or small it is, the type of architecture, if it feels magic. Supposedly there are roads that lead to different countries all over the world, so wouldn't the architecture be eclectic? Is the population very diverse then? Does she see people speaking a wide variety of languages? Does she even see people when walking on the street? I can't picture ANYTHING because nothing is fucking described. It's a magic city for fucks sake, it could have been so interesting, made the world building unique, instead there's barely any world building at all.
I don't know what the guild house looks like either. The morning when she first gets there she says she greets three people on her way down, does that mean they are people she doesn't know and there's more people we haven't met in the house? But we don't ever see them again. Are there more people than we're first introducted to living there? Are they at dinner with them but its never pointed out? I don't fucking know!
When she goes to meet Zac at the park its the perfect opportunity to describe him AND what the park is like, because for the whole scene I have no clue if there are people around. Something like 'when I arrived there I saw him immediately, his lean frame leaning back on the grass, his golden hair glinting in the midday sun' or some shit like that (btw I have no idea what colour his hair is). Also just adding 'there were a dozen people around, some children playing, other quietly relaxing in sun' or something isn't that hard, seriously. As far as I can tell there's just Zac there but I can't be sure either because... yes, well you get the picture... or should I say you don't get the picture because there is none?
I didn't feel anything when she kissed the guys either because of the lack of description -of how she feels this time. There's no physical reaction to it on her part so it's bland as fuck. It's just like 'he kissed me' or 'I kissed his lips', like ok? And? That's it? That's supposed to be exciting? Sometimes I had to reread a passage because the making out was so boring I actually almost missed it.
Reading this book was like walking through a deserted, shapeless world with blurry people, often you're not sure if there are people at all.
It could have been good, it's a shame. Well there's also the one thing I hate with a passion and that's the MC in denial. The whole 'no, I'm not special, I'm ordinary, being able to do all these incredible things is not fun, woe me' shtick. Why would authors ever think reading that kind of protagonist is enjoyable?
So I like the premise of this book. Things I didn’t like or just didn’t get (a bit of a spoiler): Indy, the main character, has some sort of half breed magic over glamours. What does she actually look like? I was confused the whole time and wondered if I accidentally skipped a page or 2- nope, I read them all. I would love a clear cut explanation of what she actually looks like, what “layers” she has and why she is grey eyed now when she was green eyed when she was a kid? She seems to have no power over it and kinda just looks drab but looks into mirrors to see eyes that aren’t hers? Has visions of what she used to look like? It was never explained why she changed and can’t change back or change her glamour. The explanation was a bit blurry and I never really understood it or the stripping glamour mirror thing. Like a guy calls her Blue, saying he can see through her glamour but her eyes were green originally? All around confused.
Secondly, our main character is kinda rude. Not blunt in a refreshing way but like juvenile and doesn’t think before she speaks. She routinely says stupid things, mean things, flies off the handle in emotional whiplash and THEN after she reads the situation and reaction to her words does she have an internal monologue “I probably should have thought of that”. I didn’t really like her to be honest.
I may read the next book if I remember to download it whenever it comes out but as of now, I’m not going to track the release.
Not the best or most original story I've ever read (hello this week's special snowflake chosen one), but it held my interest and didnt have distracting writing issues. After my recent bad book luck, that's all I could really ask for.
In this book, we meet only 3 of 7 love interests. I'm not sure how many more books the series will have, some I'm not sure what kind of pacing we can expect there going forward, but I've said a million times that I'm not a big fan of when love interests dont all join the harem at the same time. The characterization and readers' investment in the relationships almost always turns out uneven that way, so I'm not very optimistic about how this will pan out.
Still, I enjoyed this enough that i was disappointed book 2 isn't out yet.
3.75 I liked this book, but felt it was missing something or perhaps it was a little contrived. More telling than showing?? I don't know ... Maybe I felt this way because I just finished a book that actually had me crying at times. If after reading the next book I feel different I'll update.
Synopsis: Girl (Indy) doesn't know the magical world exists. Then she runs into a half blood and he recognizes her for what she is. She soon discovers she has a magical destiny to defeat a big bad. She has to find seven unique mates to be able to accomplish this. In this book she meets three of those mates. (Zac, Ben and someone .. lol)
Fmc keep denying who she is, putting herself and the others around her in danger because of her whining and childish behavior. She's pretty dumb. Nice concept, even if it's like many other books, where the girl is special but doesn't accept, keeps talking about how she is ordinary blablabla, have enormous power but thinks she's inferior to everyone, tragic past, meet the boys and etc. Half of the book I couldn't imagine what was happening because of lack of description, I don't even remember how the guys are, or the world building....
Interesting, intriguing and really good start of the series. The book didn’t seem like a carbon copy of others like it sometimes is when you give a chance to a new author.
Loved the characters and where the plot is going. I’m invested now 👀 Curious how things will go with the dragon and who will be the rest of FMC’s mates.
I’m sad that there’s only two books yet but hope the author releases the rest in near future too.
I genuinely really enjoyed this book. I was a little confused at first with the whole situation regarding Linc and her being in the club, but as the other characters were introduced it made sense. I honestly really enjoyed this book, and I think it has great promise to be a great series. I think the whole storyline is great.
This is so exciting. This is going to be really epic in reading how Indy and her guys all work together and finding clues along the way. I’m looking forward to reading what happens next.
What an amazing first book! Loved it from start to finish. Indys story really pulls you in and the guys relationship building with her romantically and each other as friends is fantastic. Can’t wait for the next one
Mediumburn. Paranormal. Rh. 3/7 guys. Hidden supernatural community. With prophesied MC plot. Good introduction to the series. Will be continuing the series.
I would have loved the story line & world building if not for my absolute worst insta-love trope... couldn't stand all those mushy scenes when the characters had just few scenes together under the belt :/
Really really enjoyed this book! I love the FMC and her guys (so far). The story is well written and flows nicely. I'm really looking forward to the next one!
Great start to a new series! This is not your average girl finds out the supernatural is real type story! Fairly unique, fun read. Can't wait to get book 2!
