What happens when an assassin falls in love with his target?
Ealon is a grieving lover whose quest for justice turned into an endless hunt. Now the only thing that keeps him from the pain of his past is bringing justice to those who escape the law.
His next target? A runaway imperial daughter trying to make a new life hiding aboard the empire's riverboats, wanted for the mysterious death of her brother.
There's just one problem--this target has the face of his dead lover.
Assassin's Tribute is set in the Resonant Saga universe, a few years before Beggar's Rebellion (book one). For new readers wanting a taste of the world before diving into the main series, or experienced ones looking for more story and some unseen background on a favorite character, Assassins' Tribute will more than satisfy.
Levi Jacobs was born in North Dakota and grew up in Japan and Uganda, so he was bound to have a speculative take on modern life. Currently marketing his epic fantasy series The Resonant Saga and at work on three more, he runs a small fruit company to pay the bills.
Succinct background story, written at the same feverish pace, as the other books in the Resonant Saga. Entertaining, passionate, well done, Levi Jacobs, well done.
For the record, I received an Advanced Review Copy (ARC) of this book with the request that I leave a voluntary honest review for other potential readers. That having been said, here is my honest opinion and review of this book. A great story with an interesting plot line that is well written and easy to read. It has excellent world building and character development. Each of the characters is unique with intricate personalities and clearly delineated motivations behind their actions. The Fletcher starts off as the embodiment of cold dispassionate justice but then slowly evolves through the story. I like the way that the events play out from start to finish keeping the tension between the characters building up until the end. It will be interesting to see how the next book plays out as well. This book is definitely worth the time it takes to read it.
This is a quick read and I finished in one sitting. Ealon is an assassin but he is doing it for a good cause. Ealon lost a family member, got revenge, then decided this was his purpose in life. Ealon becomes a trained assassin with a large knowledge of herbs so he knows which poisoned arrow will have which effect and fights accordingly. He is a little bit Batman, a little bit Punisher and a little bit Lone Ranger. Everything is going fine and Ealon only executes those who have been condemned to death by the government. Ealon gets an assignment that changes his entire life and his view of the world. This is an entertaining and quick read.
What a great book, absolutely amazing characters a storyline that sucks you in from page one and keeps you turning pages till the end.Add in twists and turns to keep you guessing, action snark and a little humour and you have first in a series that promises to be outstanding ,can't wait for book two, highly recommend a must read, Barrie.
Audiobook: I enjoyed this novella a lot. Ealon became an assassin for the government after the death of his love. Eason didn't think of himself as an assassin but as a "bringer of justice" to those who had eluded the law. The novella was short. There was plenty of action for such a short manuscript. I liked the characters as they were complicated. I'm looking forward to more stories in this world. Levi Jacobs' narration was fine, and his performance kept my attention. I was given a free copy of the audiobook, and I have voluntarily posted this review.
**** SPOILER ALERT **** "Assassin's Tribute" is my first taste of Jacob's writing. I will come back for more. This is very intriguing. The author does a superb job of world building and character development in a very, very short amount of space. I really enjoyed this entertaining story and look forward to reading more of Jacob's work in future. In the interest of transparency: I was given review copy of this book and I am voluntarily sharing this review. It is my own honest opinion.
One thing I really love about Levi's books is how real and human the characters are. You don't find caricatures or unbelievably sharp edges here - but real people who deal with real situations in the way real people do. The premise is solid. The writing is sharp and enjoyable. It had enough tension to keep me interested, but not enough to stress me out - and it left me feeling good and glad I read it at the end. Very well done!
Ealon is an assassin but he is not your normal assassin . H does not like to kill but rather incapacitate. On one mission he meets with his victim who reminds him of his last love. He begins to work with her rather than against her but unknown to him other assassins have been sent. This fact leaves him in quandary. well worth reading for a short story.
Very solid novella! This was my introduction to Jacobs's works and I am definitely going to check out more! The writing really hooked me, I was immediately immersed in this new world. And the characters were also quite well-developed, especially for how little time we spend with them. Suffice to say that I'm impressed!
I *really* enjoyed this. The language is lyrical and engaging, the characters interesting, and the world-building subtle and authentic. I particularly liked how it side-stepped some obvious tropes in favor of choosing a more complex path that proved unexpectedly satisfying.
This is the first Levi Jacobs book I have read - and it was a free download - nonetheless, I enjoyed it, story kept moving, good pace, interesting characters.
A very different style from the main series; I tried reading it beforehand but never got into it. It reminded me very much of those somehow weathered yet naive assassin with a cause books, like Brent Weeks' Night Angel (without the squicky sex stuff) or Assassin (only less grimdark), which isn't so much my kind of thing. It can be read as a standalone prequel if that's your thing, bcause it does well to set up a hint of magic in the world as well as the situation.
I chose to pick it up again after starting the series because I was interested in finding out about Ella's run-in with the assassin she mentions in the series. I'm not sure it's 100% canon and a few things about it left me confused and those assassin-but-naive tropes still don't quite make sense to me, but if you like that sort of thing it's a well-written first person POV tale of obsession and magical fights.
-I recieved a free copy of this e-book from the author's newsletter giveaway. This does not influence my review-
