Preston Alexander has wanted to see the world for as long as he can remember. Now, an opportunity has presented itself. A supposedly haunted item needs transporting clear across the Atlantic. James and William can’t take it, so Preston jumps at the chance. He may not know nearly as much about the dead as his friends, but surely it can’t be that difficult. Besides, he won’t be alone: Benjamin will be at his side, and together, they’ve always been able to handle anything.
After abandoning his new job and the strained relationship with his father, and still grieving the loss of his mother, Benjamin Prichard is eager to figure out his place and purpose in life. He isn’t keen on the idea of travelling across the world, but if it means staying with Preston and keeping him out of trouble, he’s willing to give it a go.
But their trip isn’t exactly the holiday they’d hoped for. Not only is their cargo possessed, but it’s also sought after by a mysterious group led by a man with supernatural abilities far beyond what either of them thought humanly possible.
They aren’t just being trailed; they’re being hunted.
This time, the true danger is as much the living as it is the dead.

Well you my friend have gone away / And you can't stay / No you can't stay / You can't stay with me / Well the willow weeps and dove does cry / And love does die, yes love does die / But our love will never die (Baby Blue - Hurray for the Riff Raff).
I'm that annoying guy that does that "ahhh" noise after taking a sip of a refreshing beverage. Because that's what reading this book was like for me. AhhhhThe Wrath of Wolves was so perfect! I think the best (of the best) long-running series are always the ones looking to reinvent themselves. It's the best way to avoid overstaying their welcome and becoming stale in my opinion, and I’m so happy to announce that The Wrath of Wolves is right up there with the greats in regard to reinvention. Top shelf stuff here, really. And it's not even like I was getting bored of the previous two, but what better way to breathe new life into a series than giving the story a bit of a Western movie flair while also following new (but still lovable) characters! I’m just going to go ahead and say that this series absolutely has the most charming and endearing romantic couples put to paper. Normally, whenever a book switches over to the “b couple” and focuses on them for long periods of time I lose interest real quick. But nope, not here. Sorry, I might even say that I loved Benji and Preston even more than James and Will from the first two books. I think I did, but this might mostly be because Benji is half Chinese, like me! I’m certainly not embarrassed to admit that they had me saying things like “aww” and “tee hee” at regular intervals. Out loud! All that said, thankfully this installment doesn’t abandon the unique fabric that glues all of these stories together. Is it an tender romance, a grand, sprawling adventure, or a horrifying ghost tale? You know what, why not all of the above? It also expertly explores my favorite kind of paranormal horror in a way that reminded me a little of Japanese horror flicks like Shutter, where they portray the supernatural, out-of-this-world ghosts in a more sympathetic, human light. Just because something is terrifying and seemingly evil doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s malevolent. Seriously, it’s nice when horror gives you the scares, but then maybe something a little more to sink your teeth into! I wish every book I read managed to combine so many of my favorite genres together while also telling a coherent and relentlessly entertaining story. It’d be like reading four books in one, every time. But at least until then, I have this book, and that'll be more than enough!
“I’ve missed this. I’ve missed him. And even if we’re kidding ourselves with this whole bloody affair, I’m going to hang onto this feeling as long as I can.”
“Not at all.” He looks up to meet my eyes. “I regret that we’re faced with more obstacles than I had hoped for, but I’m getting what I wanted out of this.”
“Which is…?”
“You.”
Oh, if words could melt a man’s heart.”
Oh, but it most certainly melted mine in more ways than one - for if it was so easy to bid adieu to this marvelous and wonderful series, then The Wrath of Wolves did it beautifully.🫠 I can't even put into words how much this series means to me - how invested I have become in the characters and their happiness. And once again, like all it's previous predecessors, the authors brought forth a dark mysterious story with the off-set of a blossoming tender and ever so affectionate relationship between two very dear friends.
I loved that this time around we got to have both Benji and Preston's POVs - it made watching their relationship pan out even more lovely to see - because the pining is absolutely delicious between the two. And uff, they are so smitten and stubborn and so completely head over heels for each other, so it was so admirable to see how far they were willing to wait out their feelings, for however so long they were able to maintain it. 😍😍
“I don’t know how anyone could look at him and think he was anything less than perfect. How anyone could ever be cruel to him. Why any of these people around us would bother watching the sunset when they’ve got a personification of a sunrise right here.”
It is impossible not to love any of our four protagonists, and this addition shined with just as much care and appreciation for our young heroes. I loved that Benji is trying to let go of his past and the hold his mother's memory has on him - not allowing it to dictate every action he takes and make decisions on his own - to learn how to not be so openly vulnerable, but allow himself the chance to trust others in the right way. 🥺
No matter how much Preston challenged him to rid it of himself, how he was eventually able to realize that on his own made it so very rewarding. And oh, his yearning for Preston - that precious pining that he expressed - to cross that threshold and just openly embrace him for who they are - to be with him - loved it so so much! 😊😊
“Home. And then…the world.”
Benji laughs, soft, quiet. Presses his face against the curve of my throat. “You are my world, Preston.”
And Preston - ah, Preston, how I admired how much you tried to deny your feelings for your best friend for so long - only to cave, when it was no longer possible. These two - I swear, they gave me cavities for how ridiculously endearing and sweet they were with each other. There were definitely perks to being best friends before more than friends, because they were already so comfortable around each other, that even the slightest touch of affection felt all the more intimate - laced with this fierce desire of wanting something more. 🥰🥰
Being inside Preston's mind was also so refreshing and enlightening - how he was at constant odds with himself - the absolutely adorable slow-burn emotions he was radiating - while excruciatingly frustrating, I still very much admired his restraint till he finally just caved to his desire to have Benji close to him!! 🩷 🩷 And it was everything I could have hoped for - everything that was just right for the two of them.
“Finally, finally, Benji leans down and presses his mouth to mine. If there was ever a moment I was born for, it was this.”
The writing was still as fabulous and haunting and chilling and perfect as ever. 🤌🏼🤌🏼 I'll admit, the mystery did take a back-seat as we got to see two best friends gradually realize their feelings are not entirely platonic as they had thought they were - but even so, it was interesting enough to keep the pace flowing. These authors clearly have such a love for this series - how they give such attention to detail to be as historically accurate - all the while giving us a plausible and entertaining ghost story that fits the vibe of that time.
And that epilogue!!?? 😱😱 You cannot do this to me - you can't end it with a James' POV like that with William at his side again and with that unexpected announcement!! 😭😭 I mean, can you imagine a book with all four POVs - with all four of them interacting together!!! 😭 I need the spin-off series yesterday - but it's been two years already and Kelley York is already busy with another book I want to see them again - these characters have wormed their way in my heart - I miss them already. 😔😔
Just such a wholesome lovely sweet series with a unique paranormal spin to it - Kelley York and Rowan Altwood created a gem of a series that I so very much enjoyed. Thank you for allowing us to continue on this journey with James, William, and their friends - one that I could easily re-read without complaint. ✨✨
The Wrath of Wolves was one of my most anticipated books, probably ever. After reading A Shimmer in the Night I could not wait for more of Preston and Benji, and let me just say, Kelley York and Rowan Altwood did not disappoint! I’ve got to say, Benji and Preston are giving William and James a run for their money, when it comes to being my favorite Dark is the Night couple!
I loved that Preston and Benji’s story is different, yet similar to James and William’s. While I think James and William are better equipped to handle the heavier paranormal stuff, Benji and Preston did a very admirable job with all that was thrown their way. I think the fact that this story focused a little more on the danger and mystery of the “Wolves” worked really well for them. There was still enough of a paranormal element to the story, which allowed us to learn more about Benji’s powers. And woah, did he have some interesting powers!
This story kept me on edge from the time Benji and Preston first set foot on American soil until pretty much the very end. There was a point where I did get a little complacent, thinking all would be fine- I should have known better! Just when I thought all was well, something else, something even worse, was thrown at us and I wasn’t sure any of us would recover!
It was wonderful seeing Benji grow throughout this story, from his quiet, unassuming self, to someone willing to stand up to Preston. I understand why Preston treats him the way he does, wanting to look after him, and I love him for it, but it was great to see Benji assert himself a little. Preston cares so much about Benji, and while he never wavered in wanting to protect him, he did finally relax (might not be quite the right word!) enough so that Benji was able to find his own way and stand on his own feet. "I did not want the world to get a hold of Benjamin and ruin him."
I loved getting to be in both Preston and Benji’s heads. I liked that we were able to see the vulnerability of each character from the other’s point of view. I just adore their relationship! They have a similar “power’ balance as James and William, but in their own way. I loved the slow build up, and when they had their first kiss, guh my heart! It made me cry. Finally, finally, Benji leans down and presses his mouth to mine. If there was ever a moment I was born for, it was this.
I am definitely wanting more from this series, that is for sure! There’s still so much to learn about this group, but it’s all starting to tie together from AHITS, especially there at the end. I can’t wait to be back with James & William and Preston & Benji. I don’t think I will ever tire of this series.
*Happy sigh* What can I say? I adore this series so much and this was yet another excellent addition to it. Now I can only hope that book 4 will drop soon, because the ending of this book, while complete enough to be satisfying, left many questions yet to be answered. And, not going to lie, I can always use more of William and James's and/or Preston and Benji's ghost-hunting adventures in my life.
As for this book itself, I felt it was very strong in pretty much all areas. We had more of the wonderful character arcs that the authors are famous for, at least in my household, with both Preston and Benjamin growing as people over the course of the story and facing the repercussions of their choices with dignity and learning from them. Basically all of the secondary characters were compelling, and I'm very much hoping that some of them will get books or at least stories of their own at some point. I must add that the last quarter or so was full of delicious suspense that kept me reading way longer than I had the time for, but it was well worth it.
The romance was lovely and very well-paced, at least for me, someone who adores slow-burn romances. It was also friends-to-lovers, which is another of my favorite romance tropes. Benji and Preston really are wonderful together, especially once they acknowledged and began trying to work through some of the problems that were in their relationship.
Honestly, the exploration of the characters and how they try to overcome their flaws and limitations, be it forging a life beyond the remnants of abuse, dealing with addiction, or trying to live beyond the shadow of an overbearing parent, these books handle them with both sensitivity and care. The actual hauntings and ghosts are only second to the real, personal ones, though I enjoy that aspect of the series as well.
It's also always refreshing to see a well-written character who is vegetarian or vegan, and Benji is by far one of my top three characters of the entire series, easily. It's also refreshing that Preston is mostly supportive of Benjamin and his vegetarianism. For anyone sensitive to violence against animals, I must add a CW for the quite graphic death of a horse. That scene honestly made me tear up a little.
--- Since this is currently the last book that's published, I'll go ahead and list my ratings of other books in the series here as well.
I love Benji and Preston, and was so glad to read more about them. I enjoyed first two books a bit more, here the story became a bit reperitive, but it’s still a 4* read for me.
(As someone who has gotten a fair share of EVPs, I can confirm).
Lads.
This was fucking INTENSE.
I love this series so much, and this book absolutely did not disappoint. While I think A Hymm in the Silence remains my favorite as of right now — there’s just something about William’s POV and narration that I particularly adore — I think The Wrath of Wolves was the most intense of the series thus far. It DEFINITELY had the most intense climax, anyway. I literally could not tear my eyes away from the page.
Before I read The Wrath of Wolves, I reread the rest of the series from the beginning. After doing that, I can say that one of my favorite things about this series is the fact that you can literally see the writing evolve from book to book. I absolutely love every single book so far, even the novella and short story that are out, but the first book does have a bit of a Nancy Drew-esque feel to it regarding the mystery. Which is NOT a bad thing, I think ALAS is worth every single one of the 5 stars that I gave it 2 years ago, and I’ve reread it like... 5 or 6 times since (😳). But I just love how, not only has the writing matured as the characters have gotten older, but the paranormal and mystery plots have gotten more intense, too. Again, you can literally SEE the writing EVOLVE from book to book. As someone who loves dark and twisty plots, I absolutely fucking adore that.
This book was also interesting in how the narration played out! A Light Amongst Shadows and A Hymm in the Silence followed different characters, but just one at a time — James in the first book and William in the second. This book, however, alternates chapters between the POVs of Benji and Preston. There are some books that I think can’t really pull off the varying POVs very well, but the alternations in this were smooth, clean, and easy to follow the characters as they switched back and forth. I will admit that I missed James and William, but the new perspectives were fresh and entertaining. And the chapters in Benjamin’s POV make a lot more sense if you’ve read the novella A Shimmer in the Night first, so I definitely recommend doing that!
Speaking of Benji and Preston, I really like how the relationship between them was more of a slow burn that took awhile longer to get going than it did for James and William. There are some readers that prefer for the relationships to get going right away, but I’m glad it didn’t get going in the same way or at the same pace. These characters are different, they are their own people, so the fact that the relationship didn’t just end up being a carbon copy of James and William’s was extremely relieving.
Although I will say that it was funny — and lowkey made me want to bang my head against the wall — watching Preston be absolutely daft, going from, “Oh we’re just lying in bed like this because we’re tired and have a busy day tomorrow,” to, “Maybe I’m just making excuses because I want to hold him.” (That second quote is taken straight from the beginning of the book).
Cue me just wanting to shake Preston by his shoulders like, “I am SO GLAD you have FINALLY seen the LIGHT.”
(Side note, Preston’s sisters are absolutely adorable and Alice made me smile).
Before I forget, I also want to say that the villains in this book were fucking incredible, and I absolutely see why the authors are particularly fond of Crane. He was a totally snarky bastard, but he was an excellent character, and I love that his characterization became a little more in-depth towards the end. And, as I said above, the climax and the “big villain reveal” were fucking INTENSE. My mind is still trying to process all that went down because. Holy shit. I loved every single word.
And also... the epilogue. Um. I know that some people don’t read the epilogues of books (which I??? don’t understand??? how can you just straight up skip a part of a book???), but even if you’re usually one of those people, READ THIS EPILOGUE. The closers in the first two books were great and I hung on to every word, but this epilogue in particular is literally a HUGE piece of plot development that, I get the feeling, you can’t just skip over or else you might be confused when the next book comes out. Read the damn epilogue!
Overall, this was a fantastic addition to the series, with an interesting POV change and an absolutely intense, breathtaking plot. ABSOLUTELY check out this series if you haven’t already — it is my #1 favorite indie book series and I cannot rave about it enough. I have literally gotten to the point where this series has become a “Must Buy” of the PHYSICAL, PAPERBACK books whenever something new comes out, and I’ve gotten several of my IRL and online friends to read — and love — it too. PLEASE check out this series if you haven’t already, and I hope you absolutely adore it as much as I do.
After reading the novella focusing on them, I could not wait to read more about Benji and Preston and this book did not disappoint!
This book is different from the others in a lot of ways:
1.) There is a dual POV. The chapters are alternating between Preston's and Benji's view. 2.) The characters are travelling for the majority of the story. They donn't stay in one place for long. 3.) While there is still supernatural things happening, most of the time our heroes have to escape from/fight very human foes.
The romance is also very different. Preston and Benji are already very close friends (who yearn to be more) at the beginning of the story and really have been that for quite some time. They know how the other person works (or so they think) and try to protect each other fiercely. Yet this doesn't mean smooth sailing right into a romance, since it's actually that protectiveness that's keeping them from being 100% honest with each other. It's as frustrating as it's delicious to read!
As for the case... it was alright. I prefer my cozy mysteries set in creepy houses next to a graveyard and some spooky woods, but this time I was so engrossed in the romance, that I didn't mind that it wasn't that.
Here is hope that all four boys will work on a case together soon, so I don't just get my romance but also some more friendship scenes, which were a bit lacking in this one - I mean yes, Preston and Benji are friends first and foremost, but you know what I mean!
From a purely plot perspective, I’m not certain I would say The Wrath of Wolves is as gripping as A Light Amongst Shadows or A Hymn in the Silence, nevertheless, it is my favorite of the series so far. I absolutely adore Benji and Preston. I adore them individually and as a couple. They stole my heart in every way. So while the plot didn’t feel as creepy and spooky and atmospheric, the quiet strength of Benji and Preston’s relationship and their steadfast and comforting devotion to each other, hit all the right notes and pushed all the right buttons for me.
To be clear, the writing was as strong as ever and the plot was great, it was simply not as anxiety provoking as it’s predecessors. Still, it was exciting and mysterious and chilling and I stayed completely immersed throughout. Plus all of these books tie together in a satisfying way that keeps me really looking forward to whatever comes next in excited anticipation. I also look forward to binge rereading the entire series once it’s completed to see the subtle hints here and there that one misses when they don’t know how things are connected and interrelated.
4.5 sparkling stars
Side note: I highly recommend that you do NOT skip book 2.5, A Shimmer in the Night. It’s a really lovely story that provides a solid background and foundation for Benji and Preston’s relationship.
3.5 stars... Which does not mean it was a bad book, just that I did not find in it what I loved so much in the previous volumes. Maybe because this was less mystery-oriented but more adventure-y? And the plot felt messy and I don't know I just wasn't really into it?
This time we leave James & William in London and get to follow both Benjamin and Preston on a transatlantic journey as they are tasked to deliver a haunted artefact to America. I liked both characters a lot: I liked Benjamin and his struggles to find his place in a world that always kept him at bay. Preston didn't really have any issues to work through as the other characters of this series did, only his need to take care of things for the people he loves. They've been in love with each other forever and never dared to actually verbalise it, and they were very sweet but their relationship felt so static during most of the book. I like their discussion about honesty and letting each other be their own person (especially Benjamin who tends to follow and not stand his ground). But before that, they were cute af but not very interesting to me as a couple.
I like that we got to learn a tiny bit more about the Order by meeting cool characters like Sid the Sapphic and Crane.
The epilogue has me DYING to read more and I saw the author reply to a question here on GR saying that hopefully we would see more of the boys in 2024 and I really, really hope it's true because I am desperate for more James and William...
This was a lot different than the books before this one. Still very entertaining with good spooky elements. But it was not so heartwrencing as that very first book. (I'm still not over that one) Yet to see more of Benji and Preston was a blast, and I would really like to see more of them, hopefully together with James and William.
Oh wow. I have to admit that I wasn't too sure about this book. I liked Preston and Benji well enough but I wasn't sure that I wanted to read a whole book about them. I was so wrong. I am so happy I was wrong. They are amazing characters and I loved reading their POVs. The story was so good, too! I can't believe I have even more questions now! And the epilogue? Whaaaat?
God bless this book for keeping me from sliding into a slump.
These authors really do know how to balance every genre they slide into this series. A well-created, historic atmosphere and this one stands out from the rest of the series by being set in America. The mystery gets your heart racing at times and certainly pulled me to the edge of my seat, desperate to keep reading. The ghosts make things nice and creepy. The slow-burn romance and pining were absolutely adorable. Across the board, this was a great installment to the series and I can’t wait for the next book!
These two boys get way in over their heads, but they do everything with the other by their side. They’re so protective of each other, almost to a fault, and the fact that they actually talk out this flaw was so healthy and wonderful. They find such comfort in one another’s presence and even before they admit their feelings, there’s such an intimate feel to their relationship. Though I missed James and William, Preston and Benji just brought so much warmth and happiness to me in this story.
Though they go on a long trek from England to San Francisco, CA, this never felt boring. The authors make things exciting with stalking, chases, kidnapping, rescuing, and ghost hunting all mixed together. By the end of the book, we find out that our ghost-hunting teams may have stumbled upon a far larger, more dangerous group embroiled in the occult and lordy am I excited to see where that will go. Even the antagonists’ characters became more interesting as the story went on and I’m honestly a little hopeful we’ll see more of Sid in a future story.
The Wrath of Wolves is a perfect, suspenseful, scary, and scarily amazing addition to the Dark is the Night series! It answers some questions about all the things that go bump in the night and some other threats out there, but raises even more and introduces several intriguing new secondary characters (please pretty please can we have more N & S?). The reader is mercifully spared a cliffhanger ending, but still left so so needy for more stories in this universe.
This is the first full-length story that doesn’t revolve around James and William, but it holds up beautifully next to A Light Amongst Shadows and A Hymn in the Silence. I liked Preston and Benji fine before, but I utterly adore them now. They were a bit of a surprise, so different from James and William, but just as strong in their devotion and love for each other and absolutely wonderful characters in their own right. I’d be hard put to name a favorite MC at this stage.
In The Wrath of Wolves Benji and Preston are faced with mysteries and threats on different levels, some of this world and some… decidedly not so. And perhaps even more dangerous for it. I loved the suspense and the scary, threatening atmosphere throughout the story, as well as the action scenes, which were excellently paced and very, very bad for my blood pressure.
The love story builds up very slowly, though we are never in any doubt about the strength of Benji and Preston’s feelings for each other. The longing and intense emotion these two young men feel for each other is only hinted at for the longest time, but picking up the clues left by the authors was the sweetest torture. Preston's feelings are slightly more obvious than Benji's which makes everything even more of a tease for the observant reader. Will they, won't they...? And when?! The moment they finally cross that line was just...everything! Such a pivotal scene, a shot to the heart.
This is the last instalment in the Dark is the Night series—at least for now—and it follows Preston and Benjamin’s adventure across the pond. The story takes us through America, making it a different kind of book in terms of setting, vibes, and writing, as it’s told from both of their POVs.
While I loved Benjamin’s POV in A Shimmer in the Night, I preferred being in Preston’s head in this book, but that doesn't change the fact that I really enjoyed this book as a whole.
I adored their romance—the way their love has always been there, unwavering, even when the depth of it remained unspoken. The way they took that step forward, changing everything and yet nothing at the same time, was beautifully done.
This book gave us more puzzle pieces regarding the bigger plot while still leaving so many questions unanswered. I really need the next book to come out soon because I NEED TO KNOW.
But more than anything, I need more Crane and Sid! Let me just scream for a moment... When Kelley York told me I’d love Crane, I wasn’t expecting to fall this hard for him! I need the rest of the books to placate my thirst—I’m literally begging!
And since I’m already begging... who do I have to sacrifice to the gay gods to have Crane join Benjamin and Preston to form a little throuple? I’m serious. I FELT IT. THE TENSION WAS THERE, I SWEAR.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’ll go scream into the void a bit more.
Oh boy, was this filled with even more action than the first two books, as if that was even possible.
The Wrath of Wolves picks up with Benjamin and Preston after the two novellas, where they set forth to America, taking on a job James and William have denied after the events of A Hymn in the Silence.
I am in love with Benji and Preston. Their entire relationship is so precious, and a much different dynamic from James and William's, but still equally loveable. The point at which they finally stepped outside the bounds of friendship was beautiful, and I'm glad with how it happened.
The chase in this is more gripping than the first two books, perhaps because there seems to be a lenient storyline connecting from the secondbook onwards. Although the supernatural element is still present, it has dimmed down a bit but Benji's "powers" are definitely something that I liked about this book: expanding on the independence of each character to make them more individual and interesting.
Although there is no cliffhanger, this is definitely setting up for something big and I cannot wait to see everyone in action once again. There are numerous questions left unanswered, but I do like how it tends to reveal a few parts from the previous books, therefore I assume the same will happen with this one. It might not have been as comedic as James and William, the plot itself was a page-turner and kept me off the edge of my seat.
Excited for the future of this series! Cannot wait for the Whisperwood boys to reunite.

Nobody is as sad as me that I didn’t love this but alas, while I still love Benji and Preston- the plot was boring and the book lacked the world building development the first two had.
I felt like all Benji and Preston did throughout the book was travel, get into danger, travel, get caught again, and so on and so forth. It went like that in a circle for the whole book. NOTHING ELSE HAPPENED. I love the characters but even then, I felt so frustrated reading sometimes.
I will admit- I am intrigued by Crane and Sid and would love to read about them if they ever got stories. Especially Sid, I love a good sapphic badass character.
I think the overall story ARC about the “the Order” is interesting so far and I’m curious to see how it effects the characters in future books, but... If I’m being honest- this particular line of story telling has been done so many times before. Which leaves me a little worried I might tire of it. Especially if we don’t start getting some answers. However, for the characters- especially James and William- I’ll continue the series for now.
Plus, The epilogue made me nervous and I need to make sure James and William stay okay!!

Ok! I was a Betta reader for this book and I love it. I was excited for more Benji and Preston since their novella and this novel don't disappoint. This couple won my heart ( even more than James and William because I'm a sucker for friends-to-lovers, mutual pinning and slow burn...). Benji is still the sweet boy grieving we met before but he grows so much . Preston is the adventurous and protective friend. They go in this trip for a job and their relationship faces challenges because of lack of communication and the wanting of protect each other and Kelley handles this issues in a wonderful way ,making what they have stronger. Of course there is danger an adventure and ghosts, so I promise you that you'll never get bored, following the previous books. Anyway, this was fun, electric and very romantic and sweet. Sometimes was slow and repetitive, but nothing that gets in the way of the development of the story.
I think this book is the best of the series, but definitely one that cannot be read as a standalone. Benji and Preston are very likable characters and the harrowing, action-packed plot kept me from wanting to put the book down. I hope we learn more about Crane and even Sid as well. This book had a lot of world building and main character development but still left enough unanswered questions for a continuation of the series. My only real issue is that this book was written in dual POV, switching every chapter, where the other books were written mainly from one character's POV. This could be confusing sometimes unless the narrator named the other in dialogue, so I'd find myself having to backtrack and figure out which person actually did what in the past couple of paragraphs. Each chapter is titled with who is telling the story, but I tend to gloss over chapter markers/titles when I'm reading through.
I think so far the second book might be my favorite based on the action and plot, but I am still more invested in Benjamin and Preston than I am in James and William. Though the epilogue of this book was intriguing. I enjoyed the events of this book but I think the writing style might be what keeps me from giving it 5 stars? I don’t really know what it is specifically but so far this series is a solid 4 stars. It’s pretty good character-wise and each book has its own plot that stands up well while being interconnected with the other books. I’m invested enough to keep reading and I hope the next book in this series comes soon. This one in particular was sweet and did a good job of furthering the overarching mystery.
This one is my least favorite so far in the series. It's written in first person with split-POV, which I don't like. I had a hard time getting into the characters because of this. I wasn't invested in the plot and the romance felt dull. Every time James and William were mentioned, it made me miss them.
The epilogue was back in James' POV and I really hope the next book is also in his POV. He's my favorite.
I didn't care for the plot, the side characters and even for Preston and Benjamin.
The build up of Preston and Benjamin's relationship felt flat and even when they confessed, I was very lukewarm to that. I also ended up skimming the story by the end, which is never good.
This book hints a continuation of the series, but it has been years since this came out, so I'll consider this series finished.
4,5☆ Ghost-wise it's the least spooky from the trilogy and the ending dragged on a bit, but Benjamin and Preston were so sweet!! I was (not always so) metaphorically giggling, squealing and kicking my feet the whole way through. Their relationship was delightful, none of that codependent nightmare James and William have going on, it was refreshing. I loved all the the yearning and pining, slow-burn my beloved💞
I adore the character of Benjamin and Preston isn’t half bad either (lovable like a teddy)! The plot was doable (enjoyed the transatlantic globetrotting back to Cali-for-n-i-a). There is continuation from the previous books, which is appreciated. But I just didn’t find it as spooky or creepy as the first two instalments in the series. What can I say: this girl wanted more horror!
Despite the couple spots where I was thrown out of the story by historical inconsistencies (I doubt anyone used the honorific Ms. at this point in time or that those Brits would be overly familiar with cranberries...but I could be wrong), the story was a good ghost tale. I'm interested to see what they come up with for the next story, if 2020 didn't dim their enthusiasm for the series.
I ended up having some trouble getting into this. I'm not sure what was missing for me, but the moments Benjamin and Preston shared in the previous novella, were more real than in this one. I had hoped to really love this, but James and William are the ones I would read a dozen more books about and have these two star as side characters.
