In the near future, Britain has become socially much more conservative. Of particular interest is its treatment of young offenders. Parents and schools are encouraged to spank and most respond eagerly. Of course young offenders against the law, and this includes not only those who break the law but those who accompany them and even those who are just friends of the offenders, are dealt with sternly. A sentence to a reform school is the common judicial response. In the school, flouting the rules result in black marks which are worked off by corporal punishment. Birch, cane, strap, and martinet may all come into play. The offender receives her punishment while stripped naked and the public may attend to see that justice is done. Members of the audience are offered a chance to participate either as givers or recipients. Lauren Driscoll is a reporter who is given the chance to go undercover as a ‘student’ into one such reform school to investigate whether there is any possible corruption by the administration or staff of the school. Lauren is an admirable young lady but she has difficulty managing her big and sassy mouth, so it is more or less inevitable that she will find herself undress for some, not dangerous, but extremely painful and embarrassing punishments.
Like the title she goes undercover at a reform school. When asked to go on this assignment by her boss and uncle, Lauren wants to check out the school first. Because of some trickery by her uncle she ends up being an inmate for three months when she goes to check it out. At this school bad behavior results in black marks. Bad behavior can be slow to get up in the morning, saying anything that may be taken as sarcastic to a teacher, running in the hall and the list goes on. At the end of the week all the girls with black marks are taken into a big room and punished. The public comes to see this. The girls are stripped nude and trotted out with officers flicking them with belts it they are not moving fast enough or kicking their knees high enough. They are strapped down to a bench with their butts in the air for all to see. The headmistress spins a wheel to see what instrument they will be punished with strap , cane etc. They are beat three times for each black mark they get. There is a raffle and one lucky person from the audience gets to punish one of the girls. While she is there Lauren gets black marks for being slow to get up in the morning . She also gets one for asking a P. E. teacher to give a heavy girl a break when she couldn't keep up. How dare she question a teacher. Another black mark in finance class for suggesting people make use of credit unions. The teacher was going to tell the class about credit unions Lauren should have waited . To sum up here are problems I have with this book. There are no real bad or tough girls in the place. You wonder why they are even there. When you get a black mark you are given three swats right then . Then on Sunday you are given three more for each mark so you are getting punished for the same thing twice. NObody questions this! Getting black marks just for questioning teachers seems harsh especially if it is showing concern for another person. Again nobody thinks this is unfair. They are training stepford wives here I guess. Not one person in this book ever thought they were treated unfairly. Everyone thought they deserved what they got and most was thankful they got it. When I was younger I got a speeding ticket. I didn't fight it because I was speeding but I sure as hell didn't thank the officer for giving it to me. This book takes place in modern England. Not hundreds of years ago or on another planet and yet nobody has any problem with nude girls being supervised by male officers or being brought out in front of a hundred strangers. Lastly the reason her uncle had her put in there was just to toughen her up But Lauren has no problem with that when she finds out. If you want a story where submissive girls are beaten for little or no reason and be thankful for it then you will like this book better than I did.
