Peter Lindbergh. Dior

Rate this book
Peter Lindbergh photographed DIOR’s most exceptional muses, Marion Cotillard and Charlize Theron among them, and signed campaigns for Lady Dior and J'Adore with his inimitable style. Throughout his career, the photographer was one of the House’s closest collaborators. This final book was an original co-creation that was close to the artist’s heart—and to ours.

Seventy years of DIOR history projected against the effervescence of Times Square, New this was the concept behind Lindbergh’s project, extraordinary both in scope and dimension, for which DIOR, in an unusual move, allowed an unprecedented number of priceless garments to be taken from its vaults in Paris and shipped across the Atlantic.

The result is electric. Amid the frenzy of Times Square, Alek Wek glows in the immaculate 1947 Bar suit, the storied ensemble that launched the House of DIOR. In snatches of street scenes, models Saskia de Brauw, Karen Elson, and Amber Valletta flit through crowds and scaffolding, are reflected in building façades, and draped in haute couture, from pieces hand-sewn by Christian Dior to more recent designs by Maria Grazia Chiuri. Lindbergh’s trademark monochrome and color photographs masterfully highlight the intricacies, silhouettes, and textures of each garment.

Lindbergh himself is present in every aspect of this two-volume publication designed by his long-time collaborator and friend Juan Gatti. Volume one features 165 never-before-published images from the shoot, including an introduction by Martin Harrison. Volume two pays homage to Lindbergh’s profound relationship with the Parisian House by curating more than 100 of his photographs of DIOR creations, from haute couture to ready-to-wear, men’s and women’s, originally published in some of the world’s most prestigious magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. A breathtaking tribute to two pillars of fashion and photography and their timeless collaborations.

Martin Harrison is a British art historian, curator, and author, internationally recognized for his expertise in photography, stained glass, and the work of painter Francis Bacon. Beginning his career in the 1960s as a photographer’s assistant at Vogue, Harrison later emerged as a leading authority on British photojournalism with his influential book Young Meteors: British Photojournalism, 1957–1965. He played a key role in reviving interest in forgotten photographers, including Lillian Bassman and Saul Leiter.
Harrison’s curatorial work spans major institutions such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, with exhibitions held across Europe, the United States, and Mexico. A founding trustee of the English Stained Glass Museum at Ely Cathedral, he also contributed significantly to the study of Victorian stained glass and Pre-Raphaelite art.
His most celebrated contribution lies in his extensive scholarship on Francis Bacon. Since 1999, Harrison has authored several critical texts on the artist’s work and its sources, culminating in the five-volume Francis Bacon: Catalogue Raisonné (2016), a landmark in Bacon studies. He continues to lead academic discourse as editor of the Francis Bacon Studies series, focusing on the artist’s intellectual and visual influences, particularly cinema and photography.
Across a multifaceted career, Harrison has combined visual analysis with rigorous scholarship, leaving a lasting impact on the study of modern art and visual culture.

This book does not deserve a five stars, but I gave it anyway only for the beautiful pictures of John Galliano's cloths for Dior. Those cloths are magnificent, spectaculaire and beyond words.

Regarding the first part : Dior Lindbergh - New York = let me tell you that New York and the models did not fit at all the spirit of Dior's cloths. Those cloths should have been shoot in Paris with his Top Model (90's). Nevertheless, I don't think he could have achieved the perfection made by Richard Avedon for Dior, which is just iconic.
Here, the models don't have "le port altier" corresponding to Christian Dior's cloths. Only Felice Noordhoff has it in the pictures, and I like the innocence of Sara Grace Wallerstedt. I still don't understand how they find Saskia de Brauw pretty, she is the opposite of that, no offence.
Thus, the cloths made by Raf Simons should have never been put in this book, they are not a reflexion of Christian Dior's work.
Mes coups de coeur :
- Kiki Willems, New York, 2018 - Autumn-Winter 2008 Haute Couture collection - Dior by John Galliano.
- Sara Grace Wallerstedt, New York, 2018 - Autumn-Winter 1999 Haute Couture collection - Dior by John Galliano.

Regarding the second part : Dior Lindbergh - Archives = juste magnifique.
Again Dior by John Galliano are beyond words; what an incredible era it was. My only concern was the pictures of Reese Witherspoon with an elephant which are mostly a "copyright" of the iconic ones made by Richard Avedon with Dovima.
Also, the seven picture of Robert Pattinson, Paris, 2016 is not acceptable for the price of this book, the set up is just disgusting.
Mes coups de coeur :
- Helena Christensen, Beauduc, 1990 for British Vogue, September 1990 (Dior by Ferré).
- Daphne Groeneveld, Deauville, 2011 for Numéro Homme Autumn-Winter 2011 (Dior by Galliano).
- Charlotte Connoley, Paris, 1997 for Vogue Italia, September 1997 (Dior by Galliano).

Must read or must to be watch!

ps: I cannot wait to leaf through "Dior by John Galliano" by Robert Fairer

A picture is worth 1000 words. This book does not contain much written text as the pictures speak volumes in regards to the focus, composition and capture of the subjects and places in a variety of different advertisement and marketing campaigns for Christian Dior. Peter Lindbergh has done a fantastic job capturing the essence of what makes this a globally recognized brand with its brand ambassadors and more.
