The mother of five children, Kylie Brant claims she began writing to save her sanity. Plotting stories became her method of escape from the reality of constant ball games, chauffeuring kids, and refereeing "minor" disagreements between her perfect offspring.

In 1992 she was elated to get a call from Silhouette offering to buy her second novel. Home with laryngitis at the time, she still managed to croak out agreement, and her career was born. A few months later she went on to sell Rancher's Choice, the first manuscript she’d written.

Kylie is married to her high school sweetheart, and they make their home in Iowa. She insists that all her heroes are based on her husband of 23 years because he possesses that most heroic of make qualities — ironing skills. Those abilities come in handy, as she juggles a full time teaching job with writing and a family.

Doing things the easy way has never held much appeal for this multi award-winning author. She graduated with high honors from the University of Northern Iowa. A graduation photo shows her in cap and gown holding her two sons, one aged 16 months and the other three weeks. She went on to obtain a teaching job working with learning-disabled children while completing her master’s degree at night and during summers.

"There was a time in my life when I could imagine myself as a life-long student," she recalls. "I actually toyed with the idea of pursuing a doctorate. But instead, my life took a spin and I ended up writing romances. I’ve never regretted it!" Her family has since been completed by the birth of another son and a set of twins, a boy and a girl.

Kylie’s books are regularly featured on bestseller lists such as Waldenbooks and B. Dalton Bookseller. With over a million copies of books in print, her novels have been distributed in 20 countries and released in seven languages.

Family and friends are the main focus of Kylie’s life. When she isn’t writing or teaching, she enjoys reading and flower gardening. She loves traveling, preferring beach, ocean, and room service.

Deputy US Marshall Cady Maddix is back, diving into a twisted investigation while still battling dark memories from her childhood.

I love this author and how she weaves a story. And this one did not disappoint.

I am looking forward to more of her & Sheriff Ryder Talbot too. I love his patience and tenacity when it comes to Cady. Her scars are deep and her baggage heavy!

Bring on more!!!

Deputy US Marshall Candy Maddox is back. Her newest case involves Dylan a teenage boy who has been on the run, the target of a criminal for the past 5 years. No sooner do the boy and his Mother get settled and they have to run again to stay alive. Two of Dylan’s friends similar in looks to him have been murdered.

This is the second book in this series but could be read as a stand alone. It is full of edge of your seat suspense and has several twists at the end that I didn’t see coming. I read it in one sitting, couldn’t stop turning the pages. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.

Deputy US Marshal Cady Maddix is back and the latest case she is assigned has her sympathizing with the teenage victim as they both lived through traumatic childhoods.

You certainly felt sorry for what Dylan had gone through. The trauma he experienced years ago that left his best friend dead and a killer still on the loose that has had him and his mother and brother constantly moving from town to town after killings of young men who looked like him has him on the edge of sanity. Things only get worse for poor Dylan by the end of the book when huge secrets are revealed.

Cady is a great investigator but sometimes her demons from her childhood mess with her personal and professional life. She does make some good strides in her personal life with Sheriff Ryder Talbot which I was happy to see.

The story was suspenseful and kept you engaged from start to finish and when all the truths about what really happened years ago and today are revealed its both shocking and sad. This author certainly knows how to tell a thrilling story.

Cady Maddix finally has some answers to her past, and she can now learn to cope and process that information.

The story begins with a chase, Cady is on the lookout for a man(Bruce Forrester) who is thought to have abducted a woman. She is a US Marshall with the specific task of finding and bringing wanted people in (at the federal level). Her search for him leads her down some old cases and a family fleeing from this very same man. The investigation has many tentacles, each leading down a different path and through it all. Cady is coming to grips with her past and what the facts say about it. Her budding relationship with Ryder is taking on a whole new shape as well. It added an extra facet to the woman and had me more than a little involved in cheering her on.

It is incredibly fast-paced and had some very unexpected twists, the kind I did not even think would be required to tie up the pieces of the story together! There is a lot of action, and also a lot of detail about the procedural processes but the lighter banter amongst colleagues and the introduction of Ryder’s mother into the uneasy mix were all welcome additions. I highly recommend getting to this only after having made your acquaintance with the lead characters in the first book just to keep the same pace as they do.

I look forward to the third book in the works.

If you enjoy reading about a strong law enforcement female, then you will love Deputy U.S. Marshal Cady Maddix. Cady is searching for a man who kidnapped a woman and may be responsible for the murder of three children. A fourth child may have been a witness to one of the murders and Cady is determined to catch the killer before it is too late. Cady’s mother is slowly succumbing to Alzheimer’s disease and during one of her lucid moments she mentions something unusual about the murder of Cady’s father from years ago. Due to her past, Cady has trouble allowing men to get close to her, but Ryder Talbot, the Sheriff of Haywood County, is not giving up on them. An exciting and suspenseful mystery as the author guides us to a most satisfying ending. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)

A marshal pursues a killer as well as her demons…

This is the second book in the Cady Maddix Mystery series that can be read as a stand-alone.

The attention of this reader of mystery/suspense novels was captured by what unfolded within the pages of this book: a family on the run, a revenge-driven killer of recent women playing a long game, and the law enforcement officer assigned the hunt was haunted by a traumatic incident when a young child. As we are the culmination of our experiences to date, the circumstances that define us determine how a person handles what is thrown at them and this heroine is battling more than the man she tracks.

In the teenage witness/victim Dylan Hunt, Deputy US Marshal Cady Maddix recognizes a kindred spirit, she’s personally familiar with childhood trauma and its aftereffects for her own such experience altered her life in non-advantageous ways and she has yet to deal with its repercussions, the scars ever-present though unseen. This case and her return to North Carolina to spend time with her ailing mother bring back memories that the mind in its desperate need to protect had repressed. A Pandora’s box is about to be opened, an unprovoked utterance will set Cady on a path to uncover the truth about her past that not just her mind had hidden and that she might not be ready to face. She’s not as alone as she believes, Sheriff Ryder Talbot, her sometimes lover is unobtrusively supportive, he sees the woman inside and her commitment issues don’t deter him. This experience will afford Cady much needed growth and closure.

This was my first time reading this author and I was not disappointed with an intriguing case that had numerous twists and a heroine fighting her own demons as she hunts down a smart cold-hearted killer who has eluded the authorities for much too long. Though you know who the killer is early on it doesn’t detract from the detailed investigative aspects of the marshal’s job or the active and suspenseful chase. There were multiple points of view, occasional flashbacks, and good character development, some are harboring secrets that seek the light of day. Some truths are hard to swallow but necessary to face and heal from. The heroine is not as detached as she’d like to be on this case, her sympathy for Dylan and her dog show a deep compassionate side. Beware the twists you won’t see coming.

I am loving this series

I had a hard time getting into the book but once I did I loved it. Dylan was a perfect hero to root for. He had a hard childhood and everybody that loves him has pretty much betrayed him. He is 15 years living a life of solitude afraid to go anywhere because a monster is chasing him. His friends have been killed and he lives in constant fear. The Marshall's are after the monster and Cady has her sights perfectly set on helping the boy. Lots of stuff going on and there are more monsters than just the one.

Won this in a Goodreads Giveaway. Great story, well written. It keeps your attention all the way. A wide variety of characters, some you have sympathy for and others make you disgusted. A good law enforcement story.

I thought Cold Dark Places by Kylie Brant was amazing, but this, this was phenomenal. I was still left with some unanswered questions at the end of the book, but overall, I loved it! I would recommend this to everyone! You don’t necessarily have to read the first one in order to read this, which I really liked. This book kept you guessing constantly what was going to happen next or who did what and it made me crazy! In a good way, of course! I could not put this book down. It was so great and I loved it.
The book did, however, switch back and forth between characters, but it was still easy for me to follow along and it certainly helped me in understanding the story and why some characters did certain things. I cannot wait to read more of Kylie Brant’s work because the last two books of hers definitely did not disappoint.

The second installment of this series is even better than the first. There is more character development with both Cady and Ryder. The plot is full of suspense and action. There were shocking turns towards the end I never saw coming. The fact that Cady is part of the USMS makes for a unique and intriguing story. It's a nice change of pace from the typical detective book. I look forward to the next book.

Down The Darkest Road is book 2 in the Cady Maddix series. I liked both book 1 and 2. Hopefully there will be a number 3. Federal Marshall Cady Maddix has her own past to overcome as well as killers to catch. Her story continues throughout the series.
Thank you to netgalley, the author and publisher for the arc.

This is the second book in the Candy Maddix series. She is a Deputy US Marshal. Her traumatic childhood still effects her to this day. She does have a love interest in Sheriff Ryder Talbot but she is afraid for any commitment.
Dylan whitenesses a horrific act when he is a child. The drug dealer has been after him since then. He and his family have been on the run since then. There are lots of lies and betrayal on all sides. The ending is shocking and I felt so bad for Dylan when he finally remembers the truth. Overall a nice action mystery with a unpredictable ending.

I really enjoyed this 2nd US Marshall Cady Maddix book. In this one, Cady is working on a case that involved a boy who has been hiding from a killer for several years. She is determined to track down this ruthless killer.

I loved the main character, Cady Maddix, just as much in this book as in the first one. The storyline was a good one, interesting, and completely keeping my attention throughout the book. The story was fast-paced and filled with plenty of action,

I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes next for Cady!

I did not realize that Down the Darkest Road was the second book in the Cady Maddix series, but this book also stands alone which left me pleasantly surprised. I was not left confused when reading this book, given how much character development this author manages to incorporate throughout this book. I thought this book was suspenseful given I never guessed what the outcome for the bad guy was going to be, or when Dylan would recall the events that had actually occurred when he was younger.

I also thought some parts of this book were weighted in too much detail that was unnecessary. I get why the author was doing this, but I thought even if some of the detail was cut in half you wouldn’t be confused as to the point Brant was trying to come across. Another thing for me was this book seemed to have slow momentum in the beginning, so I wasn’t sure if I was going to continue reading this book, but I’m glad I decided to keep going. It seems Brant kicks the book into gear in the second half of the book and where all the action seems to be. If you also think this book is slow going, keep with it, it’s worth it and the ending does not disappoint.

I enjoyed this more than the first book. The first one was good but this one really had me on the edge of my seat and there was a little more romance (not spice). These books are more suspense than romance, which I'm okay with since I know that going in. I usually listen to my audio books at 2x speed and am okay but with these mystery/suspense ones I have to slow it down a bit because there are so many interweaving parts. Sad there are only 4 books in the series (I don't know if it's ongoing right now). I will continue the series and hope she has a new series coming out soon! I am thoroughly enjoying her writing.
This book continues to follow Cady Maddix, a U.S Marshall. She shot and killed her father when she was 4 years old and they left a loaded gun out. There are other parts to that that are just beginning to be explored. The hero is Ryder who is a Sherrif. There are no spicy scenes in this or the first book but there is mention of them having a physical relationship. The mystery itself is a bit convoluted with a couple of things that the bad guy did but it all wraps up pretty nicely. All in all, a great read.

Good book but drags in spots

This book was decent. Miss Brant writes a lovely story and the plot was easy to follow. I do not like where she started to drag out the details. For example : she got in the elevator, she pushed the buttons, when she was exiting the doors, then her phone rings. I remember in all of my writing classes that I was told to simplify and consolidate. I understand that she's trying to paint a picture, but the picture would still be obvious if she cut out the two middle parts. But alas, the book was still decent. I give it 4 stars even though my star rating isn't showing up... It wasn't much of a mystery. I mean, the park about Trevor was something unknown and she still kind of left it floating in the air on the specifics, but I can guess what it was.

The story starts out with Cady looking for Bruce Forrester and his accomplices. They are suspected of abducting and killing women. And, Bruce is wanted for a crime a few years earlier involving Dylan and his friend Trevor. I liked the story, and it kept my interest but there were alot of people to keep track of -- Cady, her Mom Hanna, Ryder and his Mom Laura, Dylan and his Mom Tina. Then we have Dylan's "uncle" T. And best of all, Cady's dog Hero.

There is alot going on with Forester and T and I thought one thing and then another. And, the part with what really happened to Trevor was confusing. I thought for the whole book what happened, but then you find something else out towards the end, that changes everything.

I like Cady though and where the story is going with her and Ryder. Will for sure read the next book in the series.

Just...wow! First and foremost, I love a strong female character; but what I appreciate most about Brant's characters is that she truly brings them to life. Cady Maddix is a complex human- full of traumas, emotions, and struggles. I love the delicate balance between straight badassery and dealing with her demons - she walks through the emotions of issues in her personal life with her mother while trying to fight decades of defenses to let someone into her heart. So often female characters can either be written as this needy individual who cannot rise to the occasion or they come off cold and callous. I feel like Brant really captures just how complex and badass females are - and gives a subtle nod to the struggles we all face...while delivering an absolutely captivating story. I couldn't put this one down - and when it was over, I was downloading the next in the series to read.

Wow! Brilliant read full of action and a twist or 2 at the end! A well rounded story with strong and well developed characters.

Five years before Dylan Castle and his friend slipped out to go to the river. Only Dylan lived to tell the tale of what happened but his memory is sketchy.
Deputy US Marshal Cady Maddox is assigned to the case. The person suspected of killing Trevor , Bruce Forrester, is still on the run and has kidnapped a young woman. Will she be able to stop him?

This was the 1st book I've read by this author and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I will definitely read more in the future.

I received this e-book via a Goodreads/Amazon Kindle giveaway. Thank you for the opportunity to read this story and provide my honest review.

I enjoyed reading this book. I liked the character of Cady Maddix; I prefer my main characters to have some kind of backstory, be complex and not perfect. Plus, there were dogs! I loved that. I wish there had been more time developing her character; however, I didn't read #1 in the series -- so, perhaps there was more development in the first book. I am not a big fan of a lot of lovey dovey romance in my mysteries. So, the relationship between Cady and Ryder Talbot was tolerable for me. The story definitely held my interest and once I started reading it, I had trouble putting it down. The mystery and suspense definitely pulls you in.
