Nightmares are a nightly occurrence on the planet of Ylse, but sometimes they’re strong enough to lure humans into the woods to be fed on by the creatures who haunt the night. Humans have struggled to survive for centuries on the hostile planet, but for five days each year, the planet is quiet and they’re able to leave the colony without being drawn into the woods to be eaten. These five days are all the time they have to harvest the plants that give them sustenance the rest of the year, and Jarl is one of the harvesters in charge of returning with the vital pollen pods.

As Jarl reaches his destination, however, he comes across a strange sight: one of the creatures, offering peace. Is the creature sincere or is this just a new way to lure the humans to their deaths on this inhospitable planet?

Unique and interesting concept, with a strong execution. This book almost read like an episode of The Twilight Zone, and I meant this in a good way. :)

An unusual read

This book is about the human race settling on another planet after planet Earth became unsurvivable due to overuse of resources. The human settlers quickly realized they weren’t safe there as it seemed they died through nightmares.
There were creatures that lured humans out of there colony to feed off of them but the type of food was the human’s choice. And most humans immediately gave their bodies to the creatures and were eaten as result. But the main character, Jarl, met a creature named Arlen while harvesting plants during what they called the five day peace where the creatures didn’t try to kill them. Arlen spoke to him and helped him on his journey home to the colony after loading all the ripe fruits. Jarl ended up falling in love with Arlen and that kept him safe when he unwillingly left the safety of the colony to the woods to meet up with Arlen.
Unlike all the humans before him, Jarl offered his heart to Arlen and not just his body and he survived.
I liked this story because it is such an unusual love story. I have never read a romance quite like it. Arlen was literally made from Jarl’s dreams. We’ve all talked about meeting the man of our dreams but for us, that is just a metaphor. In this novel, it is very literal. These creatures are made from human dreams. So Jarl gets to spend the rest of his life with the beautiful creature his mind literally made up. It is a very fascinating concept and I enjoyed this book very much.
There were a lot of parts that were too repetitive but mostly, this was an excellent read.

Better than I thought it would be, unique read. Really the only thing it suffers from every now and then is a little bit too much internal monologue. But the dialogue was great.
