All four books of the internationally bestselling MALISON series, combined in one volume! The histories of Old Earth record that in the Year of Our Lord 778, Charlemagne’s rearguard under the command of Count Roland of the Breton March was ambushed and slain to a man. But Roland and his men were drawn through a magical gate, to a new and strange world of magic and deadly creatures. A world where every man, no matter what his estate or rank, no matter how poor or common or rich and influential, was born with the power of magic. But the magic of this world carries a deadly curse, and the price for abusing its power is ruinous. This, then, is the story of the kingdom they built, and the knight who would decide its fate.
Standing over six feet tall, USA Today bestselling author Jonathan Moeller has the piercing blue eyes of a Conan of Cimmeria, the bronze-colored hair of a Visigothic warrior-king, and the stern visage of a captain of men, none of which are useful in his career as a computer repairman, alas.
He has written the DEMONSOULED series of sword-and-sorcery novels, and continues to write THE GHOSTS sequence about assassin and spy Caina Amalas, the COMPUTER BEGINNER'S GUIDE series of computer books, and numerous other works. His books have sold over one million copies worldwide.
Purchased the whole series from kobo. No regrets as all four stories are about as long as a standard stephen king novel.
The four books follows the path of one Sir Tyrcamber Rigamond, who is nineteen when the story starts. He is one of a race of humans descended from the armies of Roland, a general of charlemagne. Roland and his men were sucked into a different world where all humans can use magic but risk being turned into crazed and/or malicious dragons if they do so excessively. The force which allows them to use magic, also responsible for the risk, is the malison of the title.
Young Tyrcamber fights one major battle in each of the four books, and they each have an impact on his path. In turn, his path could impact that of the world he lives in.
I love dragons. I love Knights. I sympathized with Tyrcamber, and there were many well handled spots. A crucial part of the final book felt a bit draggy but it was necessary.
One thing that nagged at me was the repetitive description of the malison. I felt that could have been better handled with more exposition of what it was.
This is a series of short stories, with each book being around 130 to 140 pages long, which should have made them fairly quick, enjoyable reads. Unfortunately, except for the last book, they didn't come across as that gripping, which is a shame as the overall premise sounded very interesting.
The characters are reasonably likeable, though mostly shallow and underdeveloped, except for Tyrcamber, who being the main character is developed to a greater extent.
Overall, the short story format was a detriment to these tales as there is no time to develop the themes and characters to the depth they deserve.
I found it fairly quick and easy to read. There is some interesting concepts in this world, and some unexpected turns of event. The end leaves definitely the door open to much more stories in this world.
Surprisingly, for a story where a lot of fighting happens, I find the fight to not to be over consuming of the story, and not too unrealistic (except a few bits). There is enough description of the politics to make it interesting, seeing humans at their best and their worst.
Magical beings, knights in shining armour & horrible demons . Death & destruction & a fight for survival. I found it an enjoyable series to read & take me out of my own head. The sort of tale to read in a comfy chair by the fire, a bit predictable, but it still kept my attention.
The last book was a complete surprise and the ending was brilliant the first book was very engrossing and built up the characters superbly, the second book was all action all in all the Malison series was excellent
I prefer books 2 and 3 over the first and last ones in the series. The characters show great growth, but some repeated lines became a bit much. The ending felt rushed, leaving room for improvement. Overall, an engaging series with room for refinement. 2/3 would be 4 stars 1/4 would be 3 stars
Really enjoyed this book. Great characters , battles , magic , elves , ogres , dragons etc. Good storyline and kept me interested throughout. Definitely worth 99p
This was an interesting series with tragedy in the first volume, with a shocking ending that led to a happy ending in the third volume and it led to good conclusion.
