Fans of James Patterson and Michael Connelly will love C.M. Sutter.
A rash of pharmaceutical burglaries throughout Chicago isn’t on Detective Jesse McCord’s radar until murder is thrown into the mix. Now he and his homicide team must put a stop to the carnage.
With an ace up their sleeves, the burglars threaten the lives of pharmacists’ family members if access codes to the pharmacy doors aren’t provided. If the pharmacists resist or contact the police, their loved ones will die.
Tracking down the thieves proves difficult for McCord since pharmacists are remaining silent out of fear for their families’ lives.
But when Jesse’s girlfriend is kidnapped and video surveillance shows her emptying shelves of drugs worth a fortune on the street, the stakes escalate. The burglars want a trade—her for something only Jesse has. Could it be his life? The countdown starts, and the chess game begins.

C.M. Sutter was born in San Jose, California and split time between the sunny California coast and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a senior in high school, she chose Wisconsin as her permanent address. After many years in the Badger State, she decided on a warmer year-round climate to call home and moved south. Years of progression took her from working in large companies, to twelve years as a massage therapist, and finally, owning a corporation. She has been self-employed for over twenty years. Ms. Sutter has been writing and self-publishing since 2014 with eleven titles published in a different genre. Because of her deep interest in crime and thriller novels, she took up writing in the police procedural/crime thriller genre in 2016.
The best McCord book so far. I’ve continued to enjoy Sutter’s books. It’s fun reading books set in such familiar locations. She nailed the villains in this one as well as the crimes. Looking forward to seeing what is next in store for Jesse and the group.
I started this series out of order. The first book I read number 8 was just recently published. I liked it so much I decided to start at the beginning. The over use of the word snugged has gotten on my last nerve. I wont need to read anymore, between Snugging cars and cigarettes Really, snuggling cigarettes into a pocket soft pack would smash them to pieces. The author also likes to use the word hug. As in hugging a wall to avoid detection by cameras. The best for last...dog, Bandit is given an all day kibble and fresh water device, however throughout the book the author has forgotten this fact and is adding additional food meaning over weight dog. Me noticing these things tells you I wasn't spell bpund
I found the coincidences in the story line frustrating. Plus the original theory that a number of pharmacists would remain silent and not contact the police when ugly threats put their loved ones in real danger. I just didn’t believe it. When we read police procedurals we suspend disbelief. In this book the procedures were ably assisted by coincidences that didn’t ring true. It was following a formula. Good read but no where near exceptional.
Finally, the detective might be getting a love life besides his puppy love! That in itself makes this book a gratifying read! I don’t think it is quite a thriller . Nor is it in the same class as Patterson as advertised but it is a decent read. Not quite a page turner, however. But interesting enough to to read all of it. What it has going for it is an extremely likable detective!
If you like C.M. Sutter's other series, you'll love this one!
When a pharmacists wife ends up dead, Detective Jesse McCord is on the case. With a string of pharmacy burglaries that look like inside jobs and a body count racking up, can Jesse get to the bottom of it before more people are hurt?
A page turner with an original story line. I have read so many I am always amazed to find something new. I am absolutely thrilled the F bomb and GDs are left out or I wouldnt be reading. Bravo
The plague of sequels. And not having a decent editor or beta readers. Too many to list at one time. But anyone who actually pays attention to details gets distracted with inconsistencies.
If you like police procedure books, you will love this series. I like Jesse and the characters in his life. I love that he has a dog and treats him well. Every book is exciting and well organized.
Once again I really enjoyed reading this book just as much as the previous thread and highly recommend that you do the same. Looking forward to reading the next in this series.
A story of drug thieves who resort to killing to obtain drugs from pharmacies. Injured was Hanna, Jesse's new lady friend. Is he finally going to settle down?
I'm following this series one by one. Each one is as good as the previous ones. Even better. I'm anxious to read the next one! Monica Beltrami. Montevideo, Uruguay.
This book is another terrific one in this series. I enjoy all his books and this series is no exception. If you want a good crime fiction and alot of drama try these.
Excellent and exciting... Love the series The series keeps you wondering what us next for this detective.. Awesome interesting and exciting til the end
Seems the author has decided the protagonist detective now has to somehow be the target of the villains as a tale unfolds. Not sure I like this “twist” in the last couple storylines. He’s the main protagonist & should be solving crimes not the target of them.
