I'm a Finnish-Swedish lady, born in Sweden in 1990 and living in Finland during 1997-2013, and now I'm currently living in Sweden again for a little while. I got myself a bachelor's degree in graphic design from the university of industrial arts in Helsinki in 2013, and during my two final years of those studies I drew my first real webcomic, A Redtail's dream, a 556 page tale built around some concepts of Finnish mythology.
I also ran a crowdfunding campaign for a printed book version of A Redtail's Dream, and it went so well that I'll be able to work full time as a webcomic creator with the profits and only draw SSSS for a while.
I am a total fan and I have been following this web comic every day for years. What I particularly love, in addition to the wonderful world building , non-USA centric point of view and fantastic art, is that you can never predict where the story is going. Minna Sundberg has a wide writing/art range from cute cute humor to body horror second to none. Her heart, compassion and a sort of macabre wit shine through which is a very unusual combination. If you know anyone who likes Graphic novels, the best Xmas gift you could give them is the first volume of this series. My highest recommendation.
This edition was absolutely heartbreaking. Again, beautiful artwork and atmosphere, but elevated in this edition by the drama in the story. I love how we're slowly learning about the state of the world across the series. This artist has a rare talent - can't wait for the next book!
Just finished the print edition of this volume with the boys last night. SSSS is my favorite webcomic, and is just a pure joy to read. It's very thrilling. The characters are fully developed. The art is mysterious and beautiful. The third volume continues to increase the drama and the scale.
This installment was heavier fare than previous episodes. The crew's journey takes them deeper into the silent world and the cost turns out to be extremely high. I was surprised by the turn of events that followed but perhaps I shouldn't have been; the series has always been a strange mix of lightheartedness and horror, and perhaps it was inevitable that the two threads would eventually clash.
As always, the art is atmospheric and emotional. Every page is a joy to explore, with much to find in the small details.
I highly recommend this series, and if you're too impatient to wait for the hardcopies you can always read the entire series online for free.
Gorgeously drawn. Inventive. A joy. Even more eerie to read with the current state of the world. The story does take a sad turn in this volume and left me a bit heart broken. I cant wait to sink into this world again whenever the next volume comes to print.
Love the art but felt less compelled by the storytelling in this volume. Some more somber moments were handled less skillfully than the illustration and it created a bit of a disconnect.
I've been following SSSS for several years now. Not nearly as long as some, but from the moment I picked it up, I was utterly enthralled with the world, and the people, it contained. I must have binged several chapters within the length of that first night, and I eagerly awaited each update with high hopes. The first and second book of SSSS I must say I utterly adored. This third one, though, was less then thrilling. I'm not sure what I wanted. More time spent between the characters really discussing their traumas? Loose threads picked up and neatly tied together? A real bang up of an ending, if anything, but one that most certainty addressed, more so, the pain held within Onni after the loss of his sister, Tuuri. Maybe I need to reread the entire story. Maybe I missed something. But after seeing her again, and rescuing the souls of their family, I expected some sort of discussion on what had occurred. If anything, about Tuuri's untimely death. But the discussion is more or less done off screen. This would have been fine, to me, if the last book in this series didn't so much as end, as peter out. I'm happy that the gang is all together, that they still have so much time to spend together and adventures to look forward to, but...I don't know, it's not the goodbye I was hoping for. Maybe the author is tired, maybe they're too distracted with their new work, but I think I'll always feel like I'll miss this series. And not in a sad, bittersweet way. But in a "Oh, well, I guess that's that," way.
It's a little difficult to judge the SSSS books independently as they tell a continuous story without particularly effective break points to wrap up the previous book and start the next one. Where book one served well as a first act, book two had the unfinished feeling of the first half of a second act. Book three, now, is paying off the groundwork those two books have laid. Easily the fastest paced of the first three books, it also stresses and develops the characters more. It's a thrilling read when it's all coming together.
The art is lovely and the layout compelling. Sometimes, though, the art can be muddy with confusing perspective shifts, and the layout can be disordly. This is particularly true on two-page spreads where occasionally some of the panels go left to right, top to bottom but other panels go top to bottom, left to right. I think this gets better over the years the author illustrated this, but it never quite goes away.
Someone here and I didn't care... I'm only a bit sad because
The colors were so dull here. The story was dull as well. I didn't care about the ghosts, I didn't care about the trip the characters are taking. And Reynir is irritating.
I read this three days ago and it's all blurry to me.
It's as if a very good potential was wasted on nothing. The more webcomics I read, the more I think authors need editors to help them.
Que dire... !
this continues to be my favorite comic of all time!! the humor from none of them speaking the same language is just a freaking delight; i laugh out loud so much. AND NOW ALSO CRY AND I'M JUST GOING TO CONTINUE TO HOPE FOR SOME CTRL+Z TO THIS SITUATION BECAUSE NO.
I love the art style in this series, the colour palette is beautiful. I also really enjoyed the story in the series as well, I thought the characters were well written and the story was interesting and well paced.
5☆ This was probably my favorite book so far it was so good. I've grown to love tuuri even more which makes me appreciate this book even more. I hope these characters, this Lore, and this story get a great ending (not necessarily a happy ending, just a satisfactory one because I've seen one star reviews on the next book and I'm getting worried) 5☆
