Sheldon Siegel’s critically acclaimed novels have sold millions of copies and been translated into dozens of languages worldwide. San Francisco criminal defense attorneys Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez have been called two of the most beloved characters in contemporary crime fiction. HIGHER LAW 2 continues with the fifth, sixth and seventh novels in the series: THE CONFESSION, JUDGMENT DAY and PERFECT ALIBI.
The Confession Mike Daley doesn't go to confession much since he left the priesthood twenty years ago and became a lawyer, but that doesn't stop his old friend, Father Ramon Aguirre, from trying to get him there. "It wouldn't kill you to go to church once in a while," he tells Mike. But it does kill someone.
For several months, a ruinous sexual harassment suit has been building against the San Francisco Catholic Archdiocese, and when the plaintiff's lawyer is found dead, an apparent suicide, an almost audible sigh of relief is heard in certain quarters. But that is before the police find evidence of murder. Even worse-the evidence points to Father Aguirre.
Mike and his ex-wife law partner, Rosie, jump in to take the priest's case, but what started out as difficult soon appears impossible as forensics, witnesses, and secrets from Father Aguirre's past all incriminate their client. Soon, their wits are the only things keeping the priest from a life sentence or worse, and wits simply may not be enough-unless they can conjure up a miracle of their own.
Judgement Day As husband and wife, Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez couldn't make it work. Luckily for Bay Area criminals, they didn't let that stop them from joining forces to open San Francisco's most tenacious law firm. As defense attorneys willing to take on the biggest and trickiest cases, Daley and Fernandez make one hell of team. Judgment Day finds the ex-spouses tackling their most compelling case yet. Called in at the last minute to try to stop the execution of Nathan Fineman, a former mob lawyer convicted of murdering three people in the backroom of the notorious Golden Dragon Restaurant, Mike and Rosie must race the clock in a desperate attempt to prove their client's innocence? An impossible task, given the wealth of forensic evidence pointing to his guilt. At the same time, Mike must battle his own personal demons when the reputation of his father?a San Francisco cop who was one of the first officers at the Golden Dragon on the night of the murders?is called into question. As the plot hurtles toward its stunning denouement, Judgment Day is fast approaching not only for Nate Fineman, but for Mike's father and for the law firm of Daley and Fernandez as well.
Perfect Alibi For Mike Daley and Rosie Fernandez—former spouses and current law partners—the stakes have never been higher. In the seventh installment of this bestselling, critically acclaimed series, the duo learn that their sixteen-year-old daughter’s boyfriend has been arrested on suspicion of murdering his father, a Superior Court judge. Bobby Fairchild, however, claims to have found his father’s body upon returning home from a date with Grace. The police, who found Bobby at the scene of the crime holding the murder weapon, contend that his parents’ acrimonious divorce sent the boy over the edge.
With their daughter as Bobby’s only (Perfect) Alibi, Mike and Rosie take the case that takes them down San Francisco’s darkest alleys and into the homes of some of the city’s most prominent citizens.
Sheldon Siegel is a New York Times Bestselling novelist and author best known for his works of modern legal courtroom drama.
Siegel was born on the south side of Chicago, Illinois. He attended New Trier High School in Winnetka, Illinois, and later went on to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as an Accounting major. He graduated with a Juris Doctor from Boalt Hall at the University of California, Berkeley in 1983. He has been in private practice in San Francisco, California for over twenty years and specializes in corporate and securities law with the law firm Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton LLP.
Loved the complexities of the relationships in this novel. Sheldon not only kept me in suspense as to the identity of the killer, but also made the relationships between parents and their teens very real. Being a "parental unit" to a teen is never an easy job, no matter how you come to the role. The interplay in this story was very real what's too much vs not enough supervision as they try to take on life? Great examples of how Mike and Rosy have grown over the years not only in their professional lives, but their personal ones as well. Love the supporting cast in these stories as well.
After reading Higher Law Box Set Volume I, I looked forward to reading this set Volume II. If anything, this set is even better. The informative detail of the justice system is incredibly written but the tongue in cheek inward responses of Mike Daley to the good guys and bad guys makes the entire series not only interesting, and. it leaves you with wanting more of Mike and Rosie and their unique approach to the law but turning the entire series into fun to be so engaged in their approach to the Justice System.
Wow, I thought Volume 1 was fantastic reading. Volume 2 is even better, with 3 completely different types of stories. Each one full of suspense, great characters and with a touch of humour just to break it up. The build up to the court scenes is first class, then the court scenes is so descriptive, that you actually feel that you are in the court room. Looking forward to reading Volume 3 in the very near future.
Thank you for these three exciting stories.. #5 Intense situation. Sometimes we make the wrong decisions by doing what we think is right. #6 Too Close for comfort. It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears, but justice was done. #7 This was too close to ruining family, but thanks to persistence, a life lesson was learned. Enjoyed all three and look forward to reading more of your work.
As usual the author has you stumped until the last minute. Great character development and suspense til the very end. The explanation of Rosie’s secret was the biggest surprise and led to an understanding about Mike and Rosie and how complicated their relation ship was
Great lawyers. Makes you feel like you are in the story
I have now read 7 of Sheldon Siegel's books. All the Daley/Fernandez novels. It is nice to see the characters grow and develop while also weaving thru a different legal mystery with each new book. Realistic and honest as well as interesting and keeping you involved
The author is a good story teller and in this last book, Perfect Alibi, he is showing that he is getting even better at intrigue and character surprises. That makes the constant ebb and flow of the story like a drug that's hard to kick. It makes for long nights and early mornings.
Siegel is a good story teller. Believable characters that are well developed.. Interesting twists and turns while staying tru.e to the plot. Just enough humor for comfort. Some shocks and surprises.. Left me feeling like I want to read the next book in the series to find out what is next in store for Rosie and Mike.com
I rate it a five I quite enjoy every page. Its diffently a page turned that's for sure. I have no complaints I am going to tell all my friends about this series of novels.
I just finished this second box set & I can't wait to get started on the next set. In this series, the author puts you right in the courtroom or wherever the s
Scene takes place. I'm in love with Mike & Rosie. I can hardly wait to finish this review to get to the next set.
I really did like the little bit if a twist on the story to make it more personal for the main characters. Showed a more realistic few of people everyday problems. Still a great read to have for entertainment.
Love Sheldon Siegel's mystery series by lawyers Daley and Fernandez. I've gotten to think of them as my family and am continuously kept wondering how on earth they are going to get their client off until the last minute.
Entertaining with realistic character having normal legal issues. The book flows well helping keep the attention of the reader. I enjoyed Volume 1 and look forward to Volume 3.
I truly enjoy these books. The relationships between family, work, friends and danger are amazing. The stories are truly hard to put down. Always looking for the next book when one is done.
I love these books. Mike and Rosie are more the normal couple then you would think and their lives as defense attorneys have given me a new perspective on the system!
This was nice easy read. While some pieces are a bit far fetched, the characters are feasible and the settings were fun. After working in the area for several years, it was nice to read about the places.
