…She’s putting her heart and her life on the line.
Raine Meyers is only alive today because of the heroic efforts of the Delta Force Echo Team. It’s time to pay that debt.
As an undercover defense intelligence officer, Raine tracks a Russian threat to the Delta Force wives left vulnerable while their husbands are downrange protecting the U.S.
FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Prescott, former Delta Force Operator - also Raine’s former fiancé, falls quite literally into the middle of her operation.
Since both the DIA and FBI have their teeth clamped onto the same crime, why not join forces? A plan is hatched to insert the two intelligence officers into the action—under the cover of a fake marriage—painting a target on Raine’s back, enticing the mole out into the open.
Damian wasn’t there when his Delta Force brothers saved Raine from the terrorists in Afghanistan…
…will he be there for her this time, when she’s in the sniper’s rifle sights?

I've given this a D+ for narration and a C+/B- for content at AudioGals. The narration was so horrible, it was difficult to make a proper assessment of the story.
Even Odds is book three in Fiona Quinn’sFBI Joint Task Forceseries set in her wider World of Iniquus series of interconnected romantic suspense novels. I enjoyed the previous two books – Open Secret and Cold Red, which were narrated by Teddy Hamilton and Troy Duran respectively – and was looking forward to another fast-paced, well-plotted story, but when I sat down to write this review after listening to all ten and a half hours of Even Odds, I realised I had a problem. Steve Marvel’s narration just isn’t up to the standard set by the other two performers, and it was so distracting that I just couldn’t get into the story. I got the bare bones of the plot, but I’ve probably missed some of the detail.
One of the things I did manage to grasp is that Even Odds continues the plotline begun in Open Secret, and the FBI Joint Task Force crew is continuing to investigate the propaganda/bot farms operating out of Eastern Europe that are spreading misinformation throughout the US with the intention of fomenting distrust and unrest. Former Delta Force operative and now FBI Special Agent in Charge Damian Prescott is part of that team (which also includes Rowan Kennedy from Open Secret), and their current task is to track the movements of one Todor Bilov, a Bulgarian national and member of the powerful Prokhorov family (known to be behind many of the propaganda farms) who has recently arrived in the US. The team learns that Bilov has begun a romantic relationship with a woman named Cammy Burke, who is employed at the Pentagon in the Human Resources department and who, as part of her job, has access to sensitive information about special forces operatives. Bilov is obviously cultivating her as an asset, but the surveillance photographs of the couple prove to be a game changer. Rowan Kennedy recognises the woman as Clara Edwards, the operative with whom he’d worked on his recent mission in Brussels, while Damian Prescott knows her as Raine Meyers, a former Delta Force operative – and his ex-fiancée.
As this book is part of a long-running series, I’m going to assume that Raine’s backstory has been covered in a previous novel; she was captured, tortured and almost put to death while serving in Afghanistan and was rescued in the nick of time by Delta Force’s Echo team. Since leaving the military, she joined the DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency), and when she learned of a plot that was targeting military wives – threatening them with violence if they didn’t persuade their husbands not to renew their military contracts – Raine saw a way she could at last repay the men of Echo team for saving her life. Already investigating other instances of cyber threats to military wives, Raine was perfectly placed to look into this specific threat and help secure the safety of the women left behind while their husbands are away on active duty.
Once Prescott and his team learn that ‘Cammy Burke’ isn’t just a regular Pentagon employee, they realise that their mission and whatever Raine is working on must be connected somehow and that it would make sense for them to combine forces. I have to confess here that there are chunks of the middle of the book that I just can’t recall accurately – I tried, I really did; I backtracked and listened again, but the droning of the narrator’s voice just blotted out much of what was actually happening. I remember that quite a lot of the early part of the story is told through the FBI team watching the surveillance footage of ‘Cammy’ and Bilov, and then once the two investigations have merged, the framing device shifts slightly so we get more of Raine’s PoV during those interactions.
The romantic thread in this particular story is obviously the second chance afforded to Damian and Raine, who split up several years earlier for reasons that feel flimsy at best. Neither of them has had a satisfactory relationship since but have got on with their lives and careers; I liked that Raine, though highly trained and highly skilled, has started to realise that, at thirty-six, she’s starting to slow down and is beginning to think that maybe she’s done enough and it’s time to retire – at least from field work – and do something else. Their romance is re-kindled when, as part of the plan to draw out whoever is threatening the Delta Force wives, Damian and Raine go undercover as a married couple on the local base. This only happens in the last quarter (or so?) of the book, so there’s not a lot of time for romantic development, but they do manage to talk about their break-up and about their pasts (Raine had an absolutely terrible childhood during which she suffered neglect and physical (not sexual) abuse) and, well, things proceed pretty much as you’d expect on that front.
If you read my reviews regularly, then (I hope!) you’ll know that I like to provide a good amount of detail – without giving away too much – so as to help potential listeners decide whether a particular story or audiobook is for them. On this occasion, however, I apologise for not being able to do that. The problems I had with the narration mean I haven’t picked up on as much detail or nuance as I normally like to; I was prevented from fully understanding much of the story because it was so hard to focus on WHAT was being said as opposed to HOW it was being said. I’d believed Steve Marvel to be a new-to-me narrator, but I soon worked out that I’ve listened to him twice before under another name. Those times, I found some positives about his performance, but both times, the book was a dual narration which not only featured another narrator who made Mr. Marvel sound good by comparison, but also meant he didn’t have to voice all the characters and carry the whole story by himself. Here, however, he’s on his own, and he just doesn’t have the range or skillset needed to voice an audiobook featuring a large cast of characters. I could just about tell the difference between the male and female characters, but basically all the women sounded the same and all the men sounded the same, so I rarely had any idea who was speaking – oh, no, I tell a lie; I could identify Todor Bilov because Mr. Marvel gives him this weird accent and creepy manner that made him sound like Peter Lorre. His characterisation of Raine takes absolutely no notice of the frequent textual reminders that owing to her damaged vocal chords, Raine doesn’t have a normal range of expression and intonation, and that her voice is very flat. Mr. Marvel doesn’t use that information to create a distinctive vocalisation, so Raine just sounds like the other characters and is as indistinguishable from them as they all are from each other. And if there’s any romantic chemistry between Damian and Raine in the book, there’s none here whatsoever, so the romance falls flat, too.
Gah, I could go on, but I think you’ve got the idea by now that the narration ruined the story and that I won’t be listening to Steve Marvel (or his alter-ego) ever again. The trouble is that the poor performance makes it very difficult for me to accurately grade the story. The majority of the reviews on Goodreads and Amazon are four and five stars, so I’m going with a borderline grade because I think the story of Even Odds is probably decent, and it’s not the author’s fault it’s been ruined.
Raine has had a rough life but one thing remained the same and that's her love for her h.s. sweetheart and hero. They joined up at the same time and went undercover on different assignments but one assignment raine almost lost her life and ever since Prescott has felt guilty for not being there. 7 yrs later they are thrown into a husband and wife undercover to find the people threatening the special ops wife's. They both learn many things about each other and themselves. This book and series is fantastic.
Are the wives from Delta operators safe? Family Readiness Groups have data with contact info on the operators and their families on unsecured databases.
Can Damien and Raine survive their past intense connection and come through for Echo Team and the Deltas now?
Geopolitics and emotions are complicated
Awesome action and psychological thriller plus romance!
Loved this latest instalment in all things Iniquus...and a wonderful HEA for some previous seen secondary characters. Someone is threatening the wives of Delta Force Echo, and Raine Meyers plays a precarious game in order to save them, as she owes the Delta Force team her life. Damian Prescott, the SAIC for FBI is also working on the case from a different standpoint, and when their paths cross, they join forces to eliminate the threat and save the women.
Raine Meyers (Storm/Clara Edwards - as we have seen her previously) is an amazing character, and I would say other than Lynx my favorite to date in all the heroine's Ms Quinn has brought us. Her strength, her versatility, her compassion, and her conviction have made for a wonderful story.
I admit I did find the reason for the *spoiler* break up of her relationship with Damian not explained or dealt with in depth, and I think that for them to just admit " I still love you" and be back together after 7 years, was a little superficial.
The premise of the Prokhorovs and Zorics criminal cyber destabilisation a very welcome change to the obvious overt conflict that so many stories focus on and the in depth explanation of the psychological game playing between Raine and Todor was illuminating.
As always, whilst this story is a completed HEA for Raine and Damian, the story will continue with the fight agains the crime families of Prokhorovs/Zorics and is set up for us to keep following the trail to what I am sure will be a fabulous conclusion in future books.
Def one of my favorite Iniquus stories to date...you will enjoy the read
Even Odds FBI Joint Task Force, Book 3 Fiona Quinn, author
Fast paced, intense, action packed military drama. Wow! I simply loved this story-line.
Raine Meyers, DIA agent and Damian Prescott, FBI Special Agent in charge are brought together by their superiors to solve the case involving threats against the wives of the armed forces operators. You won't want to miss this next story in the FBI series. Clearly, the best creation to date of Ms. Quinn's. There are moments of humor, seriousness and excitement. Read this dramatic story to find out how Raine and Damian, along with all the team members of the DIA, FBI and Iniquus agencies find the answers. I was provided an Advanced Reader digital copy by the author in exchange for my honest review. I do so voluntarily.
Oh my goodness! Who knew Damian had such a complex history with Raine, I love that she is the only woman he has ever loved and admits that he still does even though he let her down. Raine wears so many hats and plays so many characters in this book she must be exhausted! She reminds me of Lynx in so many ways now but then she also has her Storm persona and history too, which just makes her badass. This is my favourite book of the FBI Joint Task Force series, I read it on Kindle Unlimited.
Just finished reading Even Odds and I have to say that it's one of my favorite Iniquus books so far! FBI Agent Prescott and DIA agent Raine Myers go undercover with the help of Strike Force. Can they navigate their emotional past history while handling the demands of their professional careers?
Great book. Of Course I love them all. It was great to read about Damian. He has been hard to read in all the books he shows up in. It makes a lot of sense. Thank you for writing this. I must assume this is the set up for team echo. When you have time I was thinking it would nice to have a book about Stryker. Every time I reread the Lynx series I always wonder what Stryker is thinking. Keep writing and I will keep reading.
I’ve said it before and have to keep saying it...Fiona Quinn is my favorite author. She has a way with her characters that is just pure magic. They truly come to life, I get so invested in her books, I hate that the story has to end. The joy of a series is that they will come back around again. The constant peak into their lives with each new book is perfect. Thank you Fiona! Laura D
This is Book 3 in the FBI Joint Task Force series. It is Damian and Raine's story. Among other things. The book has suspense, excitement, wonderful characters, espionage, and romance. It is so well written. The author obviously does great research, and I always learn new things in her books. I love this book and will re-read it in years to come. Very enjoyable!
Another great book by Fiona Quinn! She has a way of tell a story that grabs your attention and doesn’t let it go. This book features Special Agent in Charge Damian Prescott and his high school sweetheart Raine Meyers aka: Clara Edwards, Cammy Burke, Paisley Moorhead, Oscar, Storm. These two were engaged at one time but it ended when Raine threw her ring in Damian’s face. Fast forward 6 years with no contact and each are working for different alphabet agencies and are after the same target. Can they work together or will unresolved emotions on both sides interfere? The lives of military wives depend on them finding the threat. This book is action packed, suspense filled and will definitely make you think.
I have read all the books in this series and they just keep getting better. Fiona Quinn has a way of weaving a story that puts you right in the middle of what is happening. You feel like you are right there with her characters trying to puzzle out what is happening, who is friend and who is foe? Who can you can you trust? There are many recurring people in Fiona Quinn's books. You will get to know the story behind Raine and Damian. They must work together to get who is threatening our military. Who will easily be caught up in this story. I can't wait for her next book♥️
If you aren't reading Fiona Quinn's Iniquus world books, you are missing out!
What a great story featuring some old favorites and adding some new ones. This is Damian and Raine's story and it's full of intrigue, danger and a love that stands the test of time. Everything you look for in a romantic, suspense thriller! What another great story in the Iniquus world!
I have no words for where this story took me. I am in awe of the author’s ability with the written word and an abstract concept. It’s a daring thrill-ride that I pray is pure fiction, but terrifies me with how very possible it is. In a world that seems hell-bent on tearing people apart, I love reading about lovers being reunited. And Damian and Raine are a pair that more than deserved a second chance. Ever since I first met him, there was just something so compelling about the enigmatic Special Agent in Charge that made me rather desperate to know more about Damian. Raine is his perfect partner in every way. When talking about Raine, I feel the need to borrow an Old Hollywood analogy about Fred & Ginger: sure he was great, but don't forget that she did everything he did, ...backwards and in high heels. This sentiment, to me, perfectly captures who Raine is and why she is so amazing at her job. I hate that the book is over already because I am nowhere near done with these characters. I need the next book NOW! I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author.
Raine Meyers works for the DIA as an operative in deep undercover assignments. She has myriad aliases which we have run into before in previous books by Ms. Quinn, although reading them is not a prerequisite for enjoying this book.
Damian Prescott is a special agent in charge for the FBI and has a history with Raine Meyers. An angry and confusing smackdown between the two of them seven or eight years ago ended their relationship that began when they were juniors in high school. A joint assignment among the FBI/DIA/CIA/Delta Force/Iniquus Strike Force and maybe some other government alphabet organizations has them back in bed together, figuratively and literally.
The two major crime families, the Zorics and the Prokhorovs, are back using villainous Cold War tactics with a cyber twist. The plots have subplots and characters are usually much more – and less – than they seem initially.
This book’s tale is an odd one in that it is twisty and meandering and all over the place. All Ms. Quinn’s stories have layers and deep levels of intrigue but this one seems more over the top than expected. There are some illogical paths that the characters follow, often without warning. For instance, the two protagonists, Raine and Damian, have a history of real friendship and love. In their past, they genuinely liked, admired, respected and trusted one other. Each has a history of putting a mission first and placing being together second. Still, they stayed in touch digitally, and often.
Then…something happened. We are told what, but not why. We see the bare bones of a problem and are given no clues supporting the fantastical and (quite frankly) silly response that Raine has to Damian’s breaking in on her snuggle fest with friend, Eric. This is in chapter 7. Raine’s reaction seems ridiculously overblown when she throws Damian’s engagement ring at him and stomps off in a hissy fit. This is weird on two counts: first, there is no groundwork laid for Raine’s behavior; she seems vindictive and mean. Second, she and Damian were true friends and that is not the way friends behave towards each other. It’s confusing and infused with unbelievability. They stayed away from each other and never spoke again for nearly eight years. Extraordinary.
We are given brief glimpses of the full story behind Raine’s astonishing conduct in the next few chapters. In chapter 9, Damian is musing: “…he’d been jilted. Jilted with good reason, he reminded himself.” So, OK. He apparently feels Raine was entitled to her little blowup, but we are given no more information. So far, we have Raine behaving ridiculously and now we have Damian telling himself it was deserved. We readers are still scratching our heads. In chapter 18, we are told that Damian knew why Raine threw the ring at him and that it was “the one thing that…would be unforgivable and make loving him untenable.” Again, OK, but we readers are still clueless. Finally in chapter 23 we learn that Raine had “sworn from the time their relationship turned serious that if [Damian] ever acted in a jealous rage, she’d walk away and never look back.” So…OK now…we know that as a teenager (since we’re told their relationship was serious from the get-go) she huffed and puffed about jealousy. She’s thirty-six now. We readers are still at a loss here. She did not even discuss Damian’s behavior with him. It takes until chapter 40 to FINALLY get what happened…sort of…. Damian confesses that he was not jealous, that he was putting Eric in his place for something he had done (which earned Eric ten years in prison). Coincidentally, Damian couldn’t tell the whole tale because he promised a friend he’d never tell her story. Hmmm. Isn’t that convenient? Weird, just weird.
Another item that is at odds with itself has to do with Raine’s iPhone. In chapter 39, she is talking with other team members about how to spin the fact that police and emergency vehicles were called from her phone in response to a threat. Frost, a member of the FBI team, suggests, “…tell them you have an app that calls 9-1-1 if there are unusual body movements,” to which Raine responds, “With their computer capabilities, they could see that’s not true. I have to tell the truth, or they’ll know I know.” In chapter 41, when she is asked by a suspected criminal, “How did the police know to come?” she responds with, “I have a safety app on my phone that alerts the police if I move in a certain way like I fall, or it thinks I’m in a fight.” So much for their computer capabilities, I guess…?
Raine has shown herself to be resourceful and with all the mirandizing and obtaining warrants to search rooms and tap phones, she and her teams are big on evidence and facts. So, when a suspected criminal brings food (which Raine believes is poisoned) to Raine and Damian, both elect not to eat the food since the person that brought it did not eat any. A team member says to Raine, “She didn’t eat the bread.” Raine says she’s “dumping it in the bin.” Why would she do that? Why not save the bread and get it tested in order to prove that the suspect had attempted to poison her? Seems out of character for Raine to simply dispose of the poisoned bread.
There are some errors that pause a reader’s forward momentum. For instance: “…their husband’s contracts all needed a re-up signature….” Unless all the women were married to one man and shared this husband, that sentence should read, “…their husbands’ contracts all needed re-up signatures….” Ms. Quinn frequently uses dependent clauses as sentences; I think it’s part of her writing style, but it is sometimes confusing and distracting: “But if Raine sent a Yes thanks! Pepperoni and extra cheese to Strike Force to get them on route.” We are left hanging – what if Raine does get Strike Force on route to her…what then? We don’t know. The writer doesn’t let Raine finish her thought. Here’s another dependent clause that goes nowhere: “Raine’s love life being a prime example.” OK. A prime example of what, exactly? We don’t know. At times, there is a change in verb tense mid-paragraph; for instance, “Raine could very well take care of herself. But that hasn’t stopped his instincts. They were baked into a code as old as time.” The first sentence is in present tense (where "could" behaves like "can" and is followed by the main verb, "take"). The second sentence uses present perfect tense, and the third uses past tense. Punctuation is sometimes missing. For instance, “It was a team sport” is a sentence that does not end with a period. It just ends.
The book stops abruptly. Damian and Raine are together, of course, as readers figured would happen in this romantic adventure. There are SO MANY loose ends, however. For instance, Raine had been working on a sting operation involving the Prokhorov family for months; it involves a man, Todor Bilov, who has been placed into a compromising position that will allow him to be turned, providing important information to the U.S. government. This whole plot, which was the focus of the book initially, is simply left up in the air. No closure. No ending. No new information. It is ignored as if the writer grew bored with it and decided to just let it go.
I rated this book 4.5 stars and rounded down because of the big to-do between Raine and Damian that felt extraordinarily overblown and the ending which actually was just a stop in writing. Still, I do enjoy Ms. Quinn’s books and am always pleasantly surprised to find a book I have not yet read, like a nice little gift waiting to be opened and devoured. Her characters live on the page and her stories are well-plotted, always a pleasant expenditure of time.
WOW Fiona Quinn gives us a book that you just can't put down and want to read on and on!
If you want a book that is action packed and gives a tug on your heart then this book that is really hard to put down is really for you! The characters pull you into the story and tug at your heart from the first chapter to the very last. The emotions you will get from all the character especially Raine Meyers will make you want to sometimes cry with her stories and smile at the courage that she had too! This book is about a Joint Task Force that involves DIA (Defense Intelligence Agency), FBI, Delta Force Operators and Iniquus Strike Force all working together to keep the Delta Force Operators and their wives safe by putting in a “married couple” who are known to the families. The scary thing is that this could actually happen with today’s technology and all the scams that are out there! I really can’t say enough about this book without giving some of the good stuff in it so pick up a copy and find a comfy place to sit and put out the Do Not Disturb Sign out so that you won’t be bugged when you start reading because as I stated in the Title line it’s a book you just won’t want to put down! Thank you Fiona Quinn for yet another book that I couldn’t wait to find out what happens in the series and the hours of fantastic reading! Can’t wait to see what happens in the next book!
Even Odds brings Fiona Quinn's Iniquus world back to her FBI Joint Task Force Series and it's the man himself Damien Prescott in the firing seat...lol Damien has been a presence throughout Fiona's world and I have been wanting to read more about him for ages and seriously who knew everything this gorgeous badass had been through and Fiona write amazingly awesome badass characters both men and women... Raine Meyer is the woman who walked away, ran away but she eventually found her way back... There is that saying 'if you set it free it will come back if it's meant to be' I felt this was true of both Raine and Damien and their way back to each other was filled with so much emotion, action, and love. Raine and Damien both struggle with decisions they made in the past, they both made mistakes but honestly it was so apparent from the very beginning that their connection was extremely solid and once they both let go of the past their way forward was always going to be together.
The ending of this story for me was PERFECT seriously perfect. I loved the whole book but especially the ending.
If your new to Fiona Quinn I seriously recommend starting at the very beginning of her Iniquus world with Weakest Lynx, I began there and have loved every single book since.
This is a wonderful romantic suspense book about a young woman named Raine who is a defense intelligence officer who was saved at one point by the elite Delta Force Echo Team and feels that she owes them her life. There has been a Russian threat to the Delta Force wives - the Russians want to threaten and hurt the wives to distract their husbands from their missions, possibly even convincing them to quit the Delta Force altogether. Damian is currently a FBI Special Agent in Charge, who was a former Delta Force operator and also Raine's former fiance. Raine and Damian decide to pretend to be married (which makes Raine one of the targets of the Russians), to try to catch a mole causing problems for the wives. Can Damien keep her safe? It was interesting to read about all the alias's Raine has used in her various missions and about the double agent roles she and Damian play. It was fun to discover how much the author must have researched to write in such detail about various fighting techniques, agent strategies, and especially the various communication and weapon devices similar to what you might find in a James Bond movie. The Moscow Rules were a great addition to the book. And the romantic side of things was wonderful to read. There was lots of action, adventure, danger, and violence. I was glad for the HEA after all that tension. I highly recommend this book!
Another book that kept me up late! Raine was a fantastic character and was so many different characters that if you read previous books you would recognize her aliases. When her mission meets up with another undercover op things heat up. Damien is one of the Agents in Charge and an ex. Great chemistry and plenty of steam. Tons of action as the two work together along with Iniquus characters that we love help try to find out who is targeting our military families. Loved it! Will probably be rereading this one!
A stupendous plot of espionage wherein intelligence agents double-crossed for money and leisure. An unknown crime family with known roots in Russia is threatening the wives of the elite delta force compelling them not to renew their contracts. An undercover Defense Intelligence officer, Raine Mayers who owes her life to the Delta force team along with FBI special agent, Damian Prescott, who happens to be Raine's ex-fiance teams up under the pretext of a fake married couple and is implanted into the location where the families of delta force are guarded to weed out the mole into the open. The joint task force squads from DIA, FBI, Delta force operators and Iniquus Strike Force's detailed and meticulous planning, analysis, use of sophisticated surveillance equipment, and advanced communication methods are not only intriguing but also alarming. The plot also ventures into the past strained relations between Raine and Damian but brings them back together with a solid purpose of exposing the perpetrators. Their love and romance were evident from the onset and is adequately elucidated intermittently during the execution of the plot. This was my first book by Fiona Quinn and it was indeed a page-turner and nail-biting thriller. Although this is the third book in the series of FBI Joint Task Force, it can be read as a stand-alone. I am looking forward to reading more of the author's books in the coming periods.
Even Odds: FBI joint Taskforce Series Book 3 is by Fiona Quinn. This is the last of the books about the FBI and probably the best. It combines the FBI and Iniquus as well as the DIA. The action is fast paced and fun. Raine Meyers is a DIA agent who was also a female Ranger. She decided as a teen that helping others through the military was what she was suppose to do after 9/11. She was really good at what she did and was involved in a case involving the Prokhorov and Zoris crime families as well as trying to find out who was threatening Delta Force wives if their husbands signed a reup contract. Damian Prescott was a special agent for the FBI and a former Delta Force member. He had left Delta Force to take care of his Mother when his Father died. He and Raine had been engaged; but she broke it off after he hit his best friend. Instead of being able to explain to her why he had hit Eric and make up with her, he was sent on a mission and she disappeared. Raine had disappeared to get well after almost being beheaded by ISIS while on a mission. It has been years since she has seen Damian. Now the two of them are paired up together to pose as man and wife on his old Delta Force team to try to find out who is threatening the Delta Force wives. Will what happened in the past cause them problems in the present?
At times I wondered if this was fiona quinn. It was so different and for lack of a better word, so disjointed. If it wasn't for the descriptive political espionage/terrorism subject then I would say it was a ghost writer. The storyline was clever, intricate, and flowing continuing the characters from past books, however, all the side stories that had to make up the plotline, for me, was off kilter. It was weird and the tales told to confirm the details of the mission was unusual, and distracting. It turned my interest, for the first time, completely down almost to the point of wanting to fast forward. This is the least liked book for me. Fiona wrote in some steam which is normal, but normally not as hot, not that it detracted anything for me. Perhaps because it was a domestic op and had to be believed by fellow military people. The last 2 hours of the book became more like fiona and i got back into the flow. The other disappointment, unfortunately, is the narrator. His voice is ok. But he doesn't sell the emotion with his tone and inflections. Then past characters already have an accent but Steve Marvel doesn't use them. He's not the best person for Fiona's normal book narrators.
Delta Force wives are being threatened in an attempt to force their spouses not to re-up. That these deep secret identities and contract information are somehow getting out there is what the alphabet soup people are out to figure out and end.
Raine Meyers is ex Delta Force, coming back after a long absence, it’s her assignment to put a stopper to the leak. Because she owes them for saving her life. And because that’s what she does. That it puts her undercover as the now retired wife of a Delta Force operative – that she was engaged to years ago, in another life – will change life as she knows it in ways she doesn’t even envision . . . yet.
Another no holds barred adventure for the joint mission.
Each of these three volumes is great as a stand alone, but they interweave seamlessly with Quinn’s whole thriller list. I first found Fiona Quinn with Open Secret, the first in this trilogy. Locked down ownership of the other two without even blinking an eye. Sadly – no, not really – I’m going back to catch up her whole back list, I don’t want to miss any of them, you won’t either. Promise!
Pictures of veteran undercover agent Raine Meyers, on a DIA assignment partnering with INIQUUS, are spilled across the table at an FBI, she’s been flagged as a ‘suspect’ government employee. Armed with that information, SAIC Damian Prescott’s FBI team hurries to get eyes on Raine and the suspected Russian spy arranging a date with her.
The team also scrambles to learn which alphabet agency Raine works for, several agents worked with her under various names and the FBI was unsuccessful recruiting her. Raine’s refused the FBI task team because of her past with Damian but he shies away from sharing Raine threw her engagement ring at him and drove off the last he saw her.
While Raine’s working on a plot to decimate DELTA force units, Damian and his team have no idea why the Russians are trying to compromise an American government employee. A joint meeting with all the cards on the table finds overlap and the next step partners Raine and Damien opening all of their old wounds and soft feels.
To my taste, this was an enjoyable read but this reader wasn’t satisfied with how quickly the threads were wrapped, Rating: 4.5stars
This is a brilliant second chance romance. Damian and Raine have been in love since high school. They both signed up for the military after 9/11, even then they stayed together. Raine is an impressive operative, well known for her strategic daring do and amazing strength of will. Damian is an experienced military operative, smart FBI agent and good man. But Murphy's Law strikes and their love is torn apart. Raine must recover from a near fatal experience with terrorists. For 7 years, Damian must learn to survive the forced separation from his love. But now fate has brought our two former lovers together for a mission vital to the safety of Delta Force operatives and their spouses. They must work as a team to draw out their enemies. They make a great team and clearly still care for each other. The mission is intense, complicated and dangerous for our heroes and those they would save. In fact, there is even a story within a story. As always, Ms. Quinn has created a personal, emotional story while also providing a suspenseful, heart rending, multi agency mission. A terrific read.
I really enjoyed this one! It pulled me in from beginning to end and held my attention the entire time. I loved getting to see Raine and Damien get a second chance to work through what happened to them 7 years ago. They both have a lot of respect for each other and both have never found anything that even comes close to what they had together. This one was interesting with the intrigue and plot of the story with the Delta wives being threatened to get their husbands not to re-up. It ties in with some of the other cases in the series (though not needed to be read) and I enjoyed how they were woven together. I enjoyed getting to see Raine and Damien separately and then as we watched them undercover and the connection that their history gave them. Everything was pretty close to the truth so it allowed for them to be honest with themselves and each other when the relationship started to change and become more. I really enjoyed it and thought it moved forward smoothly and at a good pace. Can't wait for what's next in the Iniquus world! The narrator did a good job with the story and bringing it to life.
Really good. Damian and Raine aka Storm aka Cammy Burke aka Paisley Moorhead is a badass GI Jane. Damian "Deimos" formally of Echo Delta Force has moved on after 7 year break-up with his love Raine Meyers. Damian has given up the field for desk job with FBI. Raine with her many alias is still a field operative who has lived so many lives seamlessly running away from her childhood with two very sick parents. What Raine believes as being unforgiveable she realizes was her way of getting away from Damian with what she believed was a jealousy streak in him. The two are brought together on a case involving several agencies and they must play husband and wife. So much to the two of them that this book could have gone on for another 100 pages just on their early life. Fiona is an excellent author and her attention to deal on the military background and information I love. Looking forward to her next book.
I believe that this book is very relevant for today. In some ways it's a cautionary tale for the world we live in. Sadly I can see each of these books as real life drama. The alphabets of government can only protect people so much but at some point people must wake up reality. The cyberspace wars are taking place right now and government's with opposing views frequently and easily influence the American people through their own cyber devices. More scary than that is how many buy into it. If they're attempting to destabilize society as we know it then they are achieving their goals and we are either too gullible or too stupid to realize it. While I love a good book this series makes me think of things I considered and to me that is what a good book/author is supposed to do. Definitely recommend this series and strongly suggest readers follow the authors recommend order.
When does giving your all become too much? Raine Meyers is a chameleon sliding from one personae to another in order to thwart if not take down the baddest of bad guys. But, it suddenly become just too much. One final mission and she's done Damian Prescott is as shocked as are several members of the his team when they discover each of them has interacted with Raine in one way or another over the past few years. Damian has the most personal knowledge of her as she's the one who got away. Thrown together on a mission they finally communicate after seven years. It's painful but also cathartic. They may be acting like a happily married couple in order to ferret out who's targeting Delta Force but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out their feelings have not abated. The mission comes first but there's walking away from each other once it's all said and done.

Seven years ago, Damian Prescott and Raine Meyers were planning on walking down the aisle. But that was before Raine walked away with no explanation. Fast forward to the present where Damian is DIA and Raine is FBI, working separate cases. Or are they separate cases?
I enjoyed this book. The author's writing style is easy to read, and I enjoyed the characters, although I wanted to smack Raine a couple times. This book is a suspense, with a medium heat factor. But it's written mainly as a suspense.
Even Odds is an easily bingeable book and one I definitely recommend. My one complaint is there was no epilogue. I felt, mildly, that it ended too suddenly. I enjoy seeing what the future looks like for all the characters. (What can I say? I'm a sucker for a good epilogue.)
