One week after the alien invasion, New Hampshire is once again completely f*cked. Only now it's coming from all directions - not just from the sky. This time, their main target is Doyle, former butcher and novice monster slayer. Lucky for the Granite State, the foul-mouthed, horny, chain-smoking slob has been preparing for this fight. The demonic alien presence may have unfinished business with him, but this time Doyle is ready. Some very unexpected - and unknown - entities will be fighting by his side.
This sequel to Jeff O'Brien's extremely entertaining The Night Manager was also extremely entertaining. Doyle is a fun, funny, and adorable character. Jeff is a master at the horror/comedy genre, which just happens to be one of my favorite genres, and he's at the top of his game with the Night Manager books. I've really enjoyed these adventures Jeff has conjured up and eagerly await the next one!
It's been a few years since I read a book by O'Brien, and a few more since I read the book that this one is a sequel to. I always found the author to be hit or miss, but The Night Manager is one of his works I rated quite highly.
So what happened, did my taste drastically change? Not likely. Did he just shit the bed as a writer? quite possibly.
So why did I hate this book? Main thing is, it's filled with self-aware humor without being self aware at all. it feels like a failed Joss Whedon script with every line being followed by some snide remark, while at the same time the characters are extremely flat. Every person even remotely good speaks with the same voice, and everyone meant to be unlikeable is a crude 0.5 dimensional parody of whatever type of person the author dislikes.
Doesn't help that the ending is a complete Deus Ex Machina followed by sequel-baiting.
Funny, funky and dark - just what the Doctor ordered.
Book 2 of the Doyle series delivers again.
Reincarnation, zombies(ish), vampires, and almost every other type of urban myth make an appearance.
Doyle is back, and has a slight ego after his exploits in book 1. This time, he teams up with, surprise, surprise, a couple of ladies. What could possibly go wrong...
I can't say anymore as my last review got rejected, so read it for yourself. Onto book 3
