The start of the tournament of power, the weaker fighter are eliminated fast and hard. This is very different from what happens in the anime.

Even though this did not give the side characters as much of a chance to shine I though this made a lot more sense as there is such a huge power and skill difference between the Sayans and most of the other Z fighters, that the guys on that level from the other universes should have been able to take them out quick.

Now that the strongest fighters are here, and ready to face off I can't wait for the next volume.

EN Some time ago, I mentioned how Dragon Ball could feel a bit repetitive at times, but I’m not feeling that anymore — I’m completely hooked on this new arc.

A massive Royal Rumble between warriors from multiple universes has been an absolute blast to watch. It’s fun to see how each one behaves and who manages to hold their ground the longest.

Android 17 has been the biggest surprise so far.

--

This series continues to be fun but incredibly uninspired, there's nothing here we haven't seen multiple times before, and the character design is pretty poor, these characters are all variations of each other, it's like Toyotarou is using one of those games with limited character customization options, so disappointing. Dragon Ball Super continues to read like fan fiction, long gone is the charm and the excitement of the originals.

This was a lot more fun than I ever thought possible for this series. With the stakes so high and the concept of teamwork introduced in what originally felt like a franchise that worked mostly in solo one-on-one fights.

I also love that it introduced new fighters with new skills that actually felt genuine and fun. I can’t wait for things to heat up with Goku and Jiren now!

The Tournament arc is SO much better in the Manga.

Why?

It moves at a brisk pace. Lots of fun fights, Gohan doing goddamn WORK, and Goku and Vegeta actually being badass with their power level. I also love Freeza in here and they made him MUCH more in character to his previous version. The art stays good with some great action scenes too. And while the Tournament isn't my favorite arc since the plot is bare-bones, it's still pretty dang fun. A 4 out of 5.

As the tournament of powers, the Z-/Super warriors gather and its time to start the biggest arc and its insane how well it starts off, first its an all out brawl and we see Freeza and Frost team up and knock down so many warriors, same with 17, a great moment where Frost is taking down enemies and then freeza crossing but the main focus is Hit vs Jiren and Time-stop technique of his is so cool, but we see the difference in their power and even Goku is having a hard time in it, but one cool moment where the other Universe is wiped out and then Invisible and minute warriors of Uni 4 made it interesting, cool stuff that one and then the battle rages on and the main competition starts here! This arc was so good and is just pure action and so really well done according to that and cool moments for Jiren! The art is just on another level!

7/10 stars

Not as bad as the previous installments in DB Super, but still far cry from the original. There are echoes of the wonderful chaotic abandon of the earlier Tournaments, and it's nice to see Toriyama/Toyotaro shake things up a bit and have a general melee type of fight instead of the set duels of before.

Freeza's antics are highly enjoyable, as always, giving the series a much needed element of fun, and while the art continues to be subpar and the various designs of fighters sadly look nearly indistinguishable from one another, this arc shapes up to be the best to date in DB Super.

I'm looking forward to Goku and Jiren's fight.

Here we go! I’ve been stoked and read for the actual tournament of power to begin ever since I started this manga and I’m just as stoked as ever to be sinking my teeth into some real hardcore fighting scenes. Not only that, but I genuinely forgot some of the more unique fighters from some of the earlier universe and that was a fun surprise in its own.

I dropped off the anime somewhere in this arc and the manga is like a footnote of the anime. There are just so many characters in this tournament and they don't really matter too much, just a few of them. So it's like, oh well, who cares? I just miss the heart of DBZ as this series goes through the motions. Bringing back familiar faces in new ways should have felt refreshing and fun but these people don't matter either. They don't do or add much to the story.

Like this is fine...it's readable...but I miss the depth and layers of the OG.

8/10:
Such an awesome start to the first Tournament of Power! I’ve really enjoyed seeing how not only members from the same universe work together, but also those from different universes (like Universe 6’s Frost and Universe 7’s Frieza or Universe 6’s Hit and Universe 7’s Goku). It’s surprising who’s been knocked out of the competition already for Universe 7, especially Piccolo! Time to see how the tournament ends and what the Lords of Everything decide to do!

Freeza and a nice C-17 fighting alongside Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Piccolo and a few others? A surprising team but with an interesting dynamic. I’m a bit disappointed Piccolo got eliminated so early on, but against the invisible fighter, it’s not surprising. Low, but fair is fair I guess.
Speaking of members of the original team. We saw Krilin, TenShinHan and their old master. We even saw Bulma and Trunks (future and present time) a few times. Where are Yamcha and Goten?

I don't really care for the Tournament of Power. Well, hell, I don't really care for the multiverse bullshit in Super to begin with, and I always feared Toriyama, Toyotarou, and Toei wouldn't be able to do anything really great with it. The ToP is proof of that, and it's especially bad in the manga version where everything flies by faster because Toyo's on a monthly schedule and doesn't/didn't have enough time to catch up to Toei's anime.

Twelve universes, but four are exempt from the Tournament. The remaining eight have to each choose ten fighters to battle for the survival of their respective universes. Disregarding the fact that we can predict the Super Dragon Balls will be used to restore the lost universes, there are still hardly any stakes because we know no one is going to try at all to make us give a shit about most of the characters introduced. About 90% of the characters in the ToP are fodder, walking bits of filler to pad the story arc out just a wee bit. All that matters is Son Goku, Vegeta, Juunana-gou (why, yes, I do call the Androids by their Japanese names!), Freeza, Kale and Caulifla fused as Kefla, Jiren, and Toppo. The anime allowed for Juuhachi-gou, Muten Roshi, Krillin, Tenshinhan, Piccolo, and Gohan to shine a bit more, and Universe 11's Dyspo is semi-important, but otherwise no one matters. Cabba and Hit, I guess, also.

The "issue" with this arc is the same as every arc aside from Goku Black: there is no villain, only a new "rival." Beerus threatened to destroy Earth, but became a mentor. Golden Freeza was evil, but now Freeza is a (temporary) ally. Hit wasn't evil at all, only he was the strongest Universe 6 warrior and so was the appointed "antagonist" of that arc. In the future, we will have the ultimately-benign Broly, but for now we have Jiren. Jiren is almost exactly the same as Hit. He's just a strong dude who happens to be Son Goku's major target for the tournament, as Goku is a blood knight who only wants to fight for fun. Unlike the rivalry between Goku and Krillin in the first tournament at the series's beginning, or the Turtle versus Crane / revenge for Taopaipai's death of the Tenshinhan arc, there isn't really anything here at all. Toppo's known to be a candidate for Hakaishin, but Jiren is stronger than him, and Toppo beat Goku's ass a little, so Goku would like to fight Jiren. Jiren's a bit of a cunt and considers himself too far above Goku's lust for battle... and that's it. We don't get any characterization for Jiren any time soon.

The tournament's also a total clusterfuck because Vegeta has to fight Toppo because they are each the second-best of their respective universe, but they only ever get a handful of panels to fight each other because we have to give Gohan and Piccolo and Juuhachi-gou (it's annoying to just not say "#18" but I'm committed) screentime as well.

Toyotarou's art seems to have shit itself a bit in these chapters.

****

EDIT (09/18/2024): Bumping this up from Three Stars to Four. I think I read this volume before watching the anime version of the ToP, which is, frankly, better. Well, kind of. The good thing is the anime version allows almost every fighter a chance to shine. The bad thing is it takes like fifty episodes or thereabouts, which is way longer than the forty-eight minutes the Tournament is said to last. But... I mean, five minutes on Namek... There's a precedent for temporal inconsistency.

Somewhat ironically, I find Toyo's fight scenes to look better in this volume than some of the previous ones. "Ironic" because my initial review said his art looks worse.

4.5 Stars. The tournament of power begins and it begins in a much better way than the anime did. With many of the fodder characters getting one shot or beaten in groups the pacing is top notch. One detail I find odd is that the arena is completely flat I don't dislike it but I do find it makes many of the fights much more simple. The Ribrianne fight is also mercifully shortened. All in all a very good volume that highlights characters we rarely get to see fight and gives us insight on what's to come.

Bez sentymentu i wahania eliminuje kolejnych zawodników.
A Frizer?
Jednak dalej mimo wszystko mam mały problem z Jirenem…

VOLUME 7: CHAPTER 33-36
Arc 4: Tournament of Power Saga

The Tournament of Power begins. Android #17 and Android #18 start their attack toward the Universe 10 team. Goku went straight to the Universe 11 team. Frieza team up with Frost from Universe 6. Frost managed to eliminate Krillin and Tien Shinhan. Frost then eliminated 7 fighters from Universe 9. Frieza betrayed Frost and eliminated him. He then single handedly eliminated another 3 fighters of Universe 9. Officially, Universe 9 lost the tournament and get erased by Lord Zeno. Goku is fighting the Universe 11 team while Hit is fighting Jiren. Goku join the battle with Super Saiyan Blue. Both of them are not a match for Jiren. Hit used his new technique, Time Lag, but he was defeated and eliminated by Jiren. Vegeta fights Toppo. Android #17, Gohan and Piccolo managed to eliminate 3 fighters from Universe 10. Android #18 faced the beauty trio from Universe 2 but four of them eliminated by the invisible fighter from Universe 4. Piccolo managed to eliminate the invisible fighter but he was eliminated by another unseen fighter also feom Universe 4. Android #17 managed to eliminate the unseen fighter which is a bug.

30 more minutes remain in the tournament:
Universe 1: Exempted from erasure
Universe 2: 3 fighters left
Universe 3: 7 fighters left
Universe 4: 4 fighters left
Universe 5: Exempted from erasure
Universe 6: 6 fighters left
Universe 7: 6 fighters left
Universe 8: Exempted from erasure
Universe 9: All eliminated. Erased
Universe 10: 1 fighter left
Universe 11: Full squad. No elimination yet
Universe 12: Exempted from erasure

Dragon Ball Super become really Sucks.

This comic is about the tournament of power. If a whole universe gets defeated, they get erased from existence. So it's basically a fight to the death, but not actually though. You'll understand if you read the book. 😊
For some reason, the sound effects were hilarious to me. And I agree with lady Ribrianne, Kuririn is pretty fine! I've already watched all the episodes to this series, so I knew what was happening without having started on book one. I do want to get the first six books though, as well as all of them that come after this one. This was a very entertaining comic with pretty descriptive pictures. I rate it a 3/5 stars because I liked the book, but it's not my favorite, and I wouldn't necessarily recommend it to anyone unless they read comics. Overall, a fun read.

The Tournament of Power has officially begun! The cost of losing....is being erased from existence...and in this volume we see an entire universe meet it end! As if Universe 7 wasn't aware of the stakes, they see the consequences firsthand. As I have stated before, the story is moving at an excellent pace and makes Super series load more content in less volumes! Goku is perplexed by Universe 11's Jiren refusing to acknowledge him at all...but Goku has greater concerns! The art is so good, you would not know that this series drawn by Toyotarou instead of Akira Toriyama! Some surprise loses shock me in this volume and I am sure they will for you too...but the fast-paced action makes this volume fly by! But, it's a treat from the first page to the last.

As I have seen the anime, this Volume of the manga was pretty straightforward. The Tournament of Power (as set up in the last Volume) begins and gets about maybe halfway through it. There are some differences from the anime here (as the anime always seems to stretch things out) and they were nice to see, making reading this a whole lot less predictable.
Overall, I really can't wait to see if more of the Tournament is different in the next or next two Volumes.
Recommend.

I'm afraid I am unable to compare this with the anime, as I have not watched this far into the anime. BUT, I found this volume to be very enjoyable. Perhaps my favorite thus far.

I think seeing the various ways the fighters of Universe 7 survive, and in what order the fall is fascinating. I especially love seeing how lethal and cunning Freeza is.
