It took fourteen years to construct a safe world for her and her son--and only one night for her ex to unravel it.
Celebrated Seattle restaurateur Callie James is more than a little thrown when her ex-husband, French investigative reporter Daniel Odile-Grand, shows up after fourteen years asking for her help. Even more disturbing: as she throws him out, Daniel is deliberately hit by a car, hurled through the front window of her restaurant--broken, bloody and unconscious. He flees from the hospital and breaks into Callie's apartment, where he passes out. Reluctantly, Callie hides him. When she gets back to her restaurant, two assassins walk in, insisting that she find Daniel for them by tonight or pay the consequences.
Overwhelmed and hopelessly out of her depth, Callie hires the only man she knows who can help her: Cash Logan, her former bartender, a man she had arrested for smuggling ivory through her restaurant two years earlier, and who still hasn't forgiven her.
The assassins blow up her restaurant. It's Callie's nightmare. And the worst is yet to come as she and her unlikely, incompatible ally discover that the most perilous dangers are far closer to home than they'd imagined.

DANGER IN PLAIN SIGHT: A Callie James Thriller (Callie James Thriller Book #1) by Burt Weissbourd is a thriller featuring a protagonist that I look forward to following in many more books in this new series. I could not put this book down as the characters evolved and the action reaches a fevered climax.
Callie James has worked hard for years to make her French restaurant in Seattle one of the best. It has provided the security and safety she needed to raise her son after divorcing her cheating husband, Daniel in Paris.
Daniel shows up in Callie’s restaurant after fourteen years and asks her to hide him bringing danger to her door. Not knowing what to do, she does know someone who will, Cash, her former bartender. She is not sure if he will be help her though since she had him arrested for smuggling two years ago.
As Callie’s world spins out of control, Cash and friends pull Callie into the fire. Callie and Cash deal with international money launderers, illegal weapons dealers, professional killers and terrorists. Cash will find out what Callie is truly made of and he may never be able to call her “Frosty” again. This book took me completely by surprise. I sat down expecting from the title and cover that I would be reading about the usual kick-butt female protagonist, but that is not what happened. Callie starts out in the story by being so by-the-book and black and white in her values, but as the book progresses, so does Callie. The more that happened, the more Callie evolved and came out of her “Frosty” persona to become the kick-butt protagonist I was waiting for. Cash is the perfect foil and ultimate partner for Cassie. He and his band of friends, with their murky pasts and specialized abilities ramp up the action with every twist and turn of the plot Mr. Weissbourd throws at them.
This thriller has a cast of memorable characters, has fast paced action and an intricate plot. I cannot wait for the next book in this series to see what Callie and Cash get involved in next.
I can highly recommend this first book in this new thriller series!
I've hit the literary lottery of late by reading a series of 5 star books and this book is no exception. It's an original thriller about Callie James, a strong sophisticated woman who owns and operates an upscale French restaurant in Seattle. Her ex husband Daniel, a French investigative reporter running from attempts on his life by the targets of his investigation, shows up in Seattle. He is quickly located on his arrival and survives a brutal hit and run attempt. Callie hides him and reluctantly seeks help from a tough bartender she fired two years back for smuggling ivory into her restaurant. She convinces him to enlist a team to protect her, her son, her ex husband and her restaurant from anonymous white collar villain's with deep pockets. Together they get reacquainted and surprise each other with the depth of their courage and tenacity in their mutual resolve to survive...I strongly recommend this original thriller to all my GR friends. You won't be disappointed.
Callie's ex-husband, Daniel, shows up after years. He is an investigative reporter that puts himself in dangerous situations. Daniel convinces Callie to help hide him since some people he is investigating are after him. Callie finds help in an unlikely source.
There is a lot of action in the book. There were so many characters that I got confused at times. It didn't help that some of the characters had similar names like Callie and Christy. I listened to the audiobook and don't think this would've been a problem if I was reading the book. The story was good, but the romantic part didn't seem developed enough for me. I think it would've been better to either have more of the romantic part or leave it out completely.
Thank you NetGalley and Blue City Press for this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
TITLE: Danger in Plain Sight SERIES: A Callie James Thriller Book 1 AUTHOR: Burt Weissbourd PUB DATE: 10.11.2022 Now Available
I am so addicted with Weissbourd’s character Callie James - Danger In Plain Sight is an explosive start of series that I cannot get enough of. The writing is so exciting and truly heart pounding. This is how I love my thrillers!
Format: AUDIO BOOK: Danger in Plain Sight, A Callie James Thriller by Burt Weissbourd, Narrated by Marnye Young / Publisher: Blue City Press
Danger in Plain Sight is a multi-faceted thriller. Callie James is a very successful owner of a high end type French restaurant in Seattle. She's boss, and has strict rules for the restaurant, it's menu, it's employees; basically it's her way or the highway. But her organized world is about to take a dramatic turn in ways she never imagined when her ex-husband, Daniel, shows up for an unexpected visit after 14 yrs asking for her help. Cassie initially denies Daniel's request until she realizes that two assassins are involved, who have made an attempt on Daniel's life and not only want him dead or delivered up, but will take out Cassie, ruin her restaurant and the life she loves, and kill anyone who gets in their way. Cassie has no other choice, and is forced to ask for help from an unlikely source - her ex-bartender / ex-smuggler, "Cash" Logan.
Bad blood, hot tempers, threats, plenty of drama, tension, sarcastic humor, and surprising twists. A french cocktail combination sure to please. However, it was also peppered with vulgarity from multiple characters (which I am not a personal fan of), but in context, can be seen as realistic for the tense plot.
Audio Book Narration: While Maryne Young has a very pleasant and easy to listen to voice with plenty of inflection for Cassie and Cash, the French character, Daniel, had a heavy French accent which I am not accustomed to hearing. It was difficult for me to understand what the character, Daniel, was saying at times due to the heavy accent that was narrated, and it was even worse when Daniel whispered. I found myself backing the audio up and replaying the words on occasion to actually understand and / or hear what he said. 3.5 Stars rounded up to 4.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Blue City Press for a free ADVANCED AUDIO VERSION of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Weissbourd's past as a producer/screenwriter shows in this character driven, page-turner of a thriller w/ a strong female protagonist in Callie James. Skillfully crafted, intricate plotting & action packed, 'Danger...' keeps the reader engaged & wanting more! A well-written, fast-paced book!
This one had me from the start. Callie James has moved to Seattle to open her French restaurant after her failed marriage and 14 years after that marriage who walks in...her ex and with a wild story of needing help because he is in danger. Yeah, she is having none of that and sends him on his way and he is run down and thrown through the window. This is the start of this gripping novel that only gets more chilling and dangerous. He is being hunted and he has brought the danger straight to Callie's door. She turns to Cash Logan for help. With his help they figure out where the danger is coming from but also at great peril to themselves. This one is not for the faint of heart. There is death and kidnapping and bombing and terrorism galore. This was the first time I have read this author but definitely not the last. Oh, and I enjoyed this one in audio form and the narrator was perfection!

In Danger In Plain Sight, book one of A Callie James Thriller Series, author Burt Weissbourd takes the reader behind the scenes of a riveting thriller as Seattle restauranteur Callie James reluctantly gets pulled into a dangerous cat-n-mouse game with ruthless money launderers.
Callie James is the successful owner of Le Cochon Bronze, a French restaurant in Seattle. After fourteen years, Callie's ex-husband, Daniel Odile-Brand, a French investigative reporter, unexpectedly shows up at her restaurant needing a safe place to stay, after his leads on an explosive money laundering story has put his life in danger. Callie refuses to help Daniel until he is run down outside her restaurant, and she reluctantly gets drawn into keeping him safe, unknowingly putting herself and their thirteen-year-old son Lew in danger as well. With unknown assassins on the hunt for Daniel, Cassie is forced to seek the help from her ex-bartender / ex-smuggler, Terry "Cash" Logan and his associates, Doc and Andre. Can Cassie and Cash stop the assassins and help Daniel with his story, even though the danger is in plain sight?
Danger In Plain Sight is a riveting thriller that easily draws the reader in from the start. The author provides the reader with a fascinating, multi-layered, and richly detailed story set in panoramic Seattle. This exciting story takes the reader on an exhilarating roller coaster ride as Callie and Cash engage in a very dangerous cat-n-mouse game with a very cautious and ruthless couple of money launderers, who are determined to stop at nothing to silence Daniel, and everyone and everything that gets in the way of their illegal business. There is enough drama, secrets, deception, tension, humor, and surprising twists and turns that definitely will keep the reader sitting on the edge of their seat, and guessing how this story will turn out. I loved the drama and sarcastic humor that Callie and Cash shared, it was a great way of interweaving the tension and drama of teaming up together with a touch of unexpected romance added into the mix.
Danger In Plain Sight is a well-written, fast paced story that left me interested in finding out what Callie's next adventure will be in the continuation of the series.
Disclaimer: I received a copy of the book from the author / publisher in exchange for my honest review and participation in a virtual book tour event hosted by Partners In Crime Virtual Book Tours.
I throughly enjoyed this book! Mr Weissbourd writes a well constructed story that grabs you early and keeps the reader eager to turn the page. His characters are compelling, people you can visualize and empathize with. It takes you into a world of secrets, intrigue, murder and mayhem balanced with equal amounts of tenderness, friendship, sorrow and rediscovery. A touch of love, an education in French cuisine as well as the subtle ways people judge another. Callie is a woman of strength that she doesn't know she is capable of and her transformation is realistic and heartwarming. A character that I hope to read about in another adventure. Cash is your unconventional hero, misunderstood, cold and unmoving. He finds himself in situations that would challenge most. His code is all encompassing and he maneuvers the gray areas with skill and intelligence. We find as the story progresses that his intellect and cunning are as special and real as his commitment to his friends and those who need his help. The characters that support and challenge Callie and Cash are unique. They complete the background and enhance the suspense that hang on every page. Well Done!!
Danger in Plain Sight is a very cinematic book! It’s a fast-paced, action packed novel that is thrilling to read! Thank you to Rare Bird Books and Netgalley for the opportunity to read this novel.
I’m a huge thriller fan and this definitely didn’t disappoint. Callie James is a very successful restaurant owner in Seattle and when her ex-husband shows up unexpectedly after 14 years asking for help, her world comes crashing down. This story is full of drama, action, death, bad tempers and humour (which I loved!). But my favourite thing was definitely the characters, they made this story so much fun to read and I felt myself become so invested in Callie, I was sat at the edge of my seat half of the time! I wasn’t a huge fan of her ex-husband Daniel and the choices he made leading up to his return to Callie’s world but this didn’t detract from my overall enjoyment of the book and its characters.
I kept switching between the audiobook and the paperback but the audiobook has to be my favourite way to devour this story. The narration is absolutely fantastic and I was completely captivated from the beginning.
A really well executed first book in a series - I can’t wait to see more from Callie James!
I received a copy of the book in both formats in exchange for an honest review. Thank you so much for sending me a book I ended up loving!
This is the first book that I have read by Burt Weissbourd but hopefully it wont be the last, I can honestly say that it had me gripped from the very beginning to the end
Callie James owns a high class french restaurant "The Couchon Bronze", when her ex husband Daniel Odile Grand turned up there one day Callie's first instinct was to have him thrown out but she really wanted her son Lew to get to know his father.
Daniel was a left wing journalist who had a knack of digging out unscrupulous drug dealers, traffickers, money launderers etc , uncovering them and writing about them in his column. When Daniel was hit and almost killed in a non accidental hit and run it became clear that he was onto something big, throw in the fact that the restaurant was blown up the stakes became even higher.
The only person that Callie could turn to for help was Cash, the hard as nails ex military man who was her barman and who she had turned in to the police for illegal smuggling. This description sounds so tame for a story that contains so much action, murder, money laundering, kidnapping and romance. It twists and turns as the nail biting drama reaches it's conclusion, all their lives are in danger and their adversaries are very wealthy and very dangerous, can they all escape with their lives, who will die? The author has obviously done a lot of research and it shows, the characters are wonderful from the timid but indignant and forthright Callie to the bad ass Cash and his friends, "Never judge a book by it's cover" comes to mind.
Burt's descriptive powers are brilliant, I could almost see the places, taste the food and feel the slow smouldering romance between Callie and Cash. A very well earned 5 stars.
I received this book free in exchange for an honest review which I have given
Thank you so much Burt Weissbourd for sending me a free copy of “Danger in Plain Sight” leading up to its official September 8th release!
“It took fourteen years to construct a safe world for her and her son-and only one night for her ex to unravel it. Celebrated Seattle restauranteur Callie James is more than a little thrown when her ex-husband, French investigative reporter Daniel Odile-Grand, shows up after fourteen years asking for her help.”
From the moment Callie’s ex-husband arrives, readers are taken on such a wild ride! I loved this book and could not put it down. I flew through it from the very first page all the way to the end because there was not a single slow moment. “Danger in Plain Sight” is full of action, adventure, and even some romance!
My favorite thing about the book would have to be the characters. Callie herself is amazing and readers will see her grow and change so much over the course of the story. There are plenty of supporting characters that are equally as wonderful and it was so great to learn about them all. You’ll cheer for Callie and the rest of the team as you become so invested in their lives.
In just over 200 pages Burt Weissbourd has written a story that readers will devour! I already hope to see another novel featuring Callie James and all of her new friends. It’s sure to be just as action packed as “Danger in Plain Sight” is. I hope you’ll decide to grab a copy of your own!
Cash is trying to impress upon restaurateur Callie James the psyche of her enemies and level of danger she has brought on in Burt Weissbourd’s fast-paced and appropriately titled thriller.
Thank you @getredprbooks @rarebirdlit and @burtweissbourd for this gifted copy.
What an exciting, action-packed kick-off to this series! I loved that it felt cinematic; Callie is not unlike the heroes we see and love on the big screen. I’m excited to continue with this series and see what Callie James gets herself tangled up in.
I loved this book and I will be reading more from this author. Callie James a restaurateur whose life is wrapped up into her French restaurant, Daniel her ex husband shows up unexpectedly and asks for her help, people are trying to kill him due to information he has acquired, Callie says no she has closed that door years ago. Daniel upon leaving gets hit by a truck and taken to the hospital , Callie is overwhelmed and reaches out for a old employee Cash who knows the underworld, but she fired him two years ago. The worst is yet to come. A enjoyable read, don’t start at bed time when opening up the book and closing it the sun is coming up Enjoy
WOW! This book has it all. Adrenalin rush, very interesting characters, intrigue, smuggling, the thrill of the chase (and being chased). It has romance, ugly creatures and of course, danger. Lots of danger.
I really don’t want to get into detail here because I’ll probably give away the plot. Just know that I really didn’t want this book to end. Four or five days after reading it I still can’t get it out of my head.
Thank you, Mr. Weissbourd. Please give us many more Callie and Cash adventures. I’m so happy that Callie figured out she has a backbone to go along with her intelligence.
I received a free review copy of this book from BookSirens.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was easy to read and flowed well. After reading the details about the author at the end I could understand why I thought it would make a good film! No real twists in the plot just an enjoyable read. Would recommend as a holiday read.
Received as an ARC copy, this is an honest review. Callie thought she had left behind her ex- husbands world of lies; but when he tries to connect with his son... he thrusts all of them into a deadly world of criminals that don’t take 'no' for a answer. This brilliant thriller with its not stop heart stopping moments will have you caught up in this dark ride. Highly recommended.
Money laundering, diamond smuggling, and international terrorism bring together an unlikely group of people to help a restaurateur out of a troublesome situation and possibly save her life.
When Callie James’ ex-husband shows up after fourteen years asking for a place to “lay low” for a couple of days, she sends him on his way. The arrogant French journalist was a cheater, has questionable ties with terrorist groups, and had never taken the time to get to know their thirteen-year-old son. The strait-laced, no-nonsense businesswoman had no time for Daniel Odile-Grand’s hard-luck story.
But when Daniel is injured outside her restaurant and she learns it wasn’t an accident, Callie goes into full protective mode of her ex. Fearing for his safety, Daniel escapes from the hospital and makes his way back to Callie. When a mysterious couple visits her and gives her only hours to produce Daniel, Callie James realizes she’s out of her comfort and in over her head. Daniel’s sympathetic exposés of known terrorists have won him no friends anywhere in the world. Callie knows her savvy sommelier is right when he says she only has one option… find her ex-bartender, the man she’d turned in for smuggling rare antiquities through her business.
When Cash Logan and his unique set of skills… and odd group of friends enters the picture, the masterminds behind the money laundering call in the big guns to get rid of Daniel, Cash, and his crew… and Callie.
Starting at a slow-burn, this read idles at high with deal-making and deal-breaking behind the scenes because I was never sure who knew what or had the upper hand. Cash and company are not what they appear to be and Callie is ashamed of her initial perceptions as the men put themselves at risk to keep her safe.
Callie annoyed me to no end for most of the story. She’s a walking contradiction of herself. Her strict ethics and determination to always do the right thing made her stiff and unapproachable. However, when she morphed into Daniel’s protector—for the sake of their son… the son he’d never had time for—I thought I was having a stroke. To me, the narcissistic adulterer simply wasn’t worth the time and trouble. But to be fair, Callie’s fight for Daniel’s life helped her find her backbone. When she switched from defense to offense, I was cheering her on.
Ambushes, kidnappings, and explosions blurred the story enough to make me wonder who’d be left standing. The final double-cross was perfection and prove even the smartest criminals are stupid.
Thriller and espionage readers will devour this read in one sitting!
Callie needs help and protection when her ex-husband comes to her with horrible men on the hunt for him. She has no choice but to hire Cash, who she had arrested only one year ago for illegal activity in her restaurant. “Callie, you didn’t hire me to make you feel good. You’re up against very dangerous people. There’s nothing you can do to change that reality. They don’t live in your world or play by your rules.” This book was slow-paced and a little hard to follow at times. The plot twist came without much build but I wasn’t expecting it and had not predicted it, which I love in a thriller. I didn’t feel super connected to the characters but the ending was fast-paced. I really wanted to love this one!...but it just wasn’t for me. Fans of slow burns and large-scale, complex criminal groups may like this book!
This is an action-packed novel that caught my attention from the beginning until the end. “Danger in Plain Sight: A Callie James Thriller” is an engrossing novel written by Burt Weissbourd. I really enjoyed reading this fiction. The story is about Callie James, who is a successful restaurant owner. She is a divorced woman who strives to keep on with her life. Unfortunately, after14 years her ex- appears to ruin her tranquility. So, she must look for help. This is a great book with a twisted plot worth reading. It is full of suspense, danger and anger. The characters are very well-developed since they are dynamic and complex. There are lots of turns and twists in the story that made me feel that I was immersed inside the book. I could not put it down easily. Doubtless, this is a must-read suspense book. I thoroughly recommend it to avid readers.
What a ride! First and foremost, I want to give the author two thumbs up for the character he built with Callie. Personally, this protagonist has all the condiments and characteristics that I really enjoyed in a book. It took me only a few lines to know that I would be delighted with this read.
So, the story is about Callie a very independent and strong mother who has to face, after fourteen years, her trouble-maker ex and all the troubles he carries just as money launderers, professional killers and so much more. Danger in Plain Sight: A Callie James Thriller is a book you won’t be able to put down once you begin.
In brief, this is a well written book, with an excellent pace. The author did a really good job and I hope we can read more of his work. Props to Burt Weissbourd for this amazing story.
Picture yourself as a divorced mother, who, after many years of hard work, finally has safety and economic stability from her successful French restaurant in Seattle. Imagine that one night, after fourteen years, your ex-husband appears, with money laundering and terrorism behind and puts in danger your entire world. And the only person who can help you is a former employee, that you have made arrested for smuggling in your own restaurant. Would you get your inner action hero in this situation?
Author Burt Weissbourd has made an excellent job by making readers empathize with the main character in the first novel of Callie James Thrillers: “Danger in Plain Sight”. Weissbourd is a novelist, screenwriter, and producer of feature films; and of course, writer of character-driven thrillers.
Not only engaging and strong characters but also a gripping plot and a steady pace make this book a bracing thriller. It caught my attention from beginning to end and I certainly recommend this read.
A quick and thrilling read, 𝘿𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚𝙧 𝙞𝙣 𝙋𝙡𝙖𝙞𝙣 𝙎𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩, A Callie James Thriller Book #1 is an action-packed Seattle noir novel that focuses on terrorism and money laundering and will have you rooting for the heroine. This book was such a pleasant surprise! I thought it would be another suspense-filled book (it was) but the characters really blew me away. I liked Callie at the beginning, but I absolutely loved her at the end. I really enjoyed watcher her character change throughout the story, as well as her relationship with Cash. I can't wait to see where Callie and Cash go in the next book! ⠀
I love the description in this excerpt, “Tiles from Portugal..., bar from rural France...bronze pig over the door name Lulu” all the the descriptions help to create a very vivid picture of not only where Callie, the main character, thinks. We get a brief description of her appearance as a blond Northwest beauty. We know she has a restaurant and she has a son, Lou that she worries if she’s spending quality time with him. We get a sense that the restaurant is her life. There’s something that keeps wakes her up at night but we don’t what. From what we’ve read her life is ordered and a success but what could possibly wake her up in the wee hours of the morning checking and double checking her list. The narrators tone does a great job of creating intrigue. This is a story I an eager to hear more of.
This books starts off really quickly and there are a lot of characters with different story lines to keep track of. The plot line was very interesting, was lots of twists and turns. I was intrigued until the very end. I really enjoyed the main character's (Callie) interactions with those around her and her world view was fascinating.
The narration for this audio book was incredible. The narrator handled the different accents and languages really well and created a different voice for each, which helped the listener keep track of who was speaking. Note: having characters named Callie and Kelly can be hard to distinguish in audio, sometimes I was unsure which name was spoken and had to rely on context of the story to determine which character was speaking or being referred to.
I received a free copy of this audio book in exchange for my honest review from NetGalley and the publisher.
💀💀💀💀/5 𝗗𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗥 𝗜𝗡 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗜𝗡 𝗦𝗜𝗚𝗛𝗧 by Burt Weissbourd is an action-packed, fast-paced suspense novel that would make for an excellent action-suspense movie! 𝗦𝗬𝗡𝗢𝗣𝗦𝗜𝗦: “It took 14 years to construct a safe world for her and her son—and only one night for her ex to unravel it. Celebrated Seattle restaurateur Callie James is more than a little thrown when her ex-husband, French investigative reporter Daniel Odile-Grand, shows up after fourteen years asking for her help. I thoroughly enjoyed the way the main character, Callie James, evolved throughout the book. She was unsure of herself and always by the book, but she turned into a confident, assertive, kick-ass heroic woman. Full of surprises, this well-planned story with its well-developed characters and vivid descriptions gripped me from beginning to end, and I’d love to see this become a movie. (Burt is a screenwriter, so it could happen!) Overall, a read that I recommend to anyone looking for an exciting, fast-paced, and suspenseful story. I am very much looking forward to another Callie James thriller! A huge thank you to Burt Weissbourd for my ARC! DANGER IN PLAIN SIGHT is out now in physical book, e-book, and audiobook.
An interesting read in an over-saturated genre! Thanks to her ex-husband, Callie is forced into a high-octane adventure NOT of her choosing; dealing with people she shouldn't or wouldn't deal with; putting her own son in danger; rehiring an employee she fired.... with trouble coming at her from all sides, who can she trust?
I enjoyed reading this first book by this author. I received a free ARC of this book from the author through Booksirens and I am giving my unbiased review.
With plenty of action to keep the story moving along, Danger in Plain Sight' is an interesting thriller with some memorable characters.
I listened to the audiobook version and this has a couple of flaws which would probably not be an issue with the book version. Firstly the Narrator's voice is a bit flat and the attempt at a French accent sounds more Italian to me. Secondly there are characters with very similar names that can get confused (Callie, Christy & Kellie)
Leaving aside the issues with the audio version I enjoyed the story which keeps you guessing at every turn.
I would've liked more character development for some of the side players to give it a bit more depth. I initially was sceptical about the romantic sub-plot but then realised it was necessary to set up the final end-game
I'd rate this at 4 stars but need to knock off a star for the audio version for the reasons stated above.
I would be happy to read further offerings from Burt Weissbourd in the future
