From the onset, Janine doesn't pretend to be an accomplished author. Highly successful in business, she penned a mixed bag to tell her story.
At first, I thought I was reading a straight autobiography. Janine talks about her upbringing and education. She tells the reader of her travel adventures around the world and how she eventually returned to Australia.
From an autobiography narrative, the book then became a motivational 'how to be successful' story with chapters dedicated to business-type affirmations and can-do attitudes. The reader learns how Boost Juice was started and the highs and lows of how Janine strived to succeed. The entire book tends to be disjointed, but nonetheless, Janine's story is an interesting one.
There's quite a repetitive element throughout, and Janine's loyalty and gratefulness to her husband among others was mentioned many times, as too was the fact that she never went to year 12 or university. We also learn that Janine sold her house and put everything into Boost Juice in the early days, and how she managed to run the business while she had three young children at home.
Then the book goes down another path of facts and figures relating to business, in amongst deciding on wanting another baby and personal issues surrounding that. All the while Boost is going from strength to strength. Janine often mentions the importance of picking the right people for the job and there is a heavy focus on that throughout the book.
My copy of this book is the Survivor edition. Being a fan of the TV show, I really enjoyed the chapters dedicated to it. Again though, it felt like I was reading a separate book. After the Survivor tales, it was then back to business, facts and figures. Janine goes into details about recruitment and mentions that sometimes potential employees can have up to five interviews to ensure the right person is found. Wow.
Personally, I think Janine sounds like a great person, extremely driven and of course is highly successful and an obvious self-starter. She is a workaholic, although over the years has learned to gear back a little and found that yoga was a beneficial alternative to burning out!
I recommend this book if you are interested in a success story, albeit a little disjointed it's still a decent read.
On this day I learned you can really like a person but they don’t always write well. Or hire a decent ghost-writer. Their life stories may be interesting but they are not necessarily interesting to read. I’ll always admire and have all the respect for Janine Allis but, I found this manual and recount so tedious, I couldn’t finish it and I love survivor. I love boost juice. Will continue to cheer for Janine but, not this book.
