About the author

Paul Verlaine

Paul-Marie Verlaine was a French poet associated with the Symbolist movement. He is considered one of the greatest representatives of the fin de siècle in international and French poetry.

Despite Rimbaud admiring his poetry, these poets had a stormy affair which led to Verlaine's incarceration after shooting Rimbaud. This incident indirectly preceded his re-conversion to Roman Catholicism.

Verlaine's last years were particularly marked by alcoholism, drug addiction and poverty.

His poems have inspired many composers, such as Chopin, Fauré and Poldowski.

Art Poétique describes his decadent style and alludes to the relevance of nuances and veils in poetry.

An orphan dull, and destitute
But for my untroubled look,
I came among the city folk:
They did not seem to find me cute.

At twenty, a strange fever came
To plague me, called love's ecstasy;
I found the girls were good to see:
Of me they did not think the same.

No country and no king had I;
I was not really very brave;
I longed to find a soldier's grave:
But death in battle passed me by.

Oh, born too late or born too soon,
In this great world what is my part?
Deep is the anguish of my heart . . .
Pray for poor Gaspard, every one.

The collection contains a number of long poems that show another side of this poet. Verlaine returns here to his painful journey before showing his mystical transformation when he rediscovers the Catholic faith without eliminating his pain in life. However not being a Catholic I found it hard to grasp the point. There is no joy, no uplift, only pain and dolour. This is religion without inspiration, without transcendence.

Verlaine se odmiče od pretežito ljubavnih tematika te ulazi u dublju, duhovnu sferu. Pokušava se dovesti u kontakt sa Bogom svjestan svojih grijeha i pobuda.

Izdvojio bih pjesmu "Gaspar Hauser pjeva".

Je les avais lu pendant une overdose de poésie de Verlaine, donc même mon avis est biaisé par l'épuisement. Il faudra que je le relise.

Le plus spirituel des recueils de poèmes de Verlaine. Peut-être celui qui m'a le moins plût.
