This book lays out the psychological reasons behind issues that affect resiliency in down to earth layman's terms, as if you were having s conversation with a buddy. Once having understood the psychology, it proceeds to give immediate exercises and suggestions on steps to implement into your life. Each topic is backed by multiple references. It is a very practical and refreshing read when compared to other psych self help books that inundate the reader with obfuscated academic minutiae, and then leave the reader with a headache wondering, "Well great now I know all of these case studies and new psych terms, but how exactly can I put this to use in my life?" The title targets a male audience, probably a subset concerned with "manliness," but the concepts apply to everyone regardless of age or gender. There is even a chapter on helping shape confidence and resiliency in children.
Life is full of challenges and many of them will knock us down. It is in these moments that resilience comes into play. Resilience is the ability to face challenges and deal with difficulty and continue to move forward through life without breaking down. It is a virtue that we develop in life and it's one that we have to actively cultivate and improve throughout our lives and it's never over. Brett lays out many exercises that we can use to build our resiliency and periodically assess ourselves and improve. It's another short and succinct read and is certainly worth taking the time to read to improve your own life and help those that you love build their own resiliency.
What I like about this author and his content in general is that his works is backed up by research and in general is very easy to understand. He truly cares for us as men, but also if your a woman you can learn a lot from this book. A short 69 page ebook which can be received for free when you sign up for The Art of Manliness Newsletter. Some good advice for how to become more resilient when facing adversity. The formatting and design of the book is far better than their ebook on competition but still not great. Some unnecessarily strong language in parts which seems out of place for AOM content.
Pretty detailed but reads almost like an essay or an abridged version of someone else's work. Very well referenced. This is the "quick and dirty" version of the topic of resilience. I would suggest that someone truly interested in the subject matter and willing to dedicate the time should read this book and then read the reference material used in creating this work.
Great snappy, short introduction to my new year. Some of the basic issues relating to giving a good self assessment as to where I need to focus on in my own character improvement and written with a light, personable style.
Decent little book. Not something I would recommend.
Chapter 4 on virtues is something I’ll probably look back on. But really chapter 6 about passing along adversity to your kids was the best. He pretty much summed up the other chapters and gave some solid points to think about.
A collection of blog posts on his website. This little book is chalk full or research and and understandable material on what makes on resilient. I enjoyed reading it start to finish. And I like the idea I am supporting my favorite blogger/podcaster by buying it.

Resiliency is one of the main reasons why I read Art of Manliness. I like the motivation, the history lessons, the life skills. This book is really great because it's not just inspiring, it also gives you really got instructions on how to follow up. I like it because of that concreteness.
It's also easy to read and understand, yet not overly simple. It makes me think and I love books that do that. This would be good for anyone to read. The world is in dire need of people who are resilient, and it's entirely possible for anyone to enhance that within themselves.
As always, the Art of Manliness delivers a trusty guide to an important lifestyle issue. Using psychological research, the McKays explain the causes of a feeling of powerlessness in the face of life's adversities and how the reader can go about feeling more empowered and mentally prepared for the future.
