I have always been a voracious reader, the first thing I always did after moving to a new town was get a library card and fill my arms with new books.
I am now turning my hand to writing, living and working in the gorgeous English county of Shropshire which allows me plenty of opportunity to stare out of the window at gorgeous scenery when I should be writing.
I bring a life-long fascination with mythical creatures and ancient legends to my writing, starting with the ‘Fae Defence Society’ series of novels.
I loved this beautifully written historical fantasy! It follows Jacob, a WWI veteran, in his new role as a protector of Stonehenge, defending against the Fae forces threatening to cross over into our world. The chapters alternate between Jacob’s wartime journal and current mission. The journal chapters were often short and punchy with a startling look at what life was like in the trenches. The post war chapters were full of awesome battles as the FDS tried to get their bearings fighting new and often frightening foes. It’s the prequel to his first novel, “The Fairies Want Me Dead” which isn’t out yet but I’m really looking forward to it.
I could not out this one down. Brilliant idea, Jacob and Harry two first world war veterans now fighting in an secret army against the fae. Loved it. I liked the layout, the wartime diary entries at the start of each chapter followed by the contemporary story which is full of creatures and battles, loss and sacrifice, short sighted superiors and enterprising men. The novella length makes it a quick read. I would have liked more, and am looking forward to the sequel. I received a complimentary copy from Storyorigin and am leaving a honest voluntary review.
I’m giving this book a six out of 10. I liked the combination of the chapters and the diary entries. I also like the characters. How come Jacob can do magic? Without a staff? The world building in this was good. And the war stuff seemed very accurate.
A really good prequel in this mixed genre fantasy story, of which some of it takes place during world war one! A really interesting style of writing, almost of the era mixed with the more modern fantasy part following the two main characters of the story. A very enjoyable read!
If you are into historical fiction that dabbles in the supernatural and fae then this book is a must! The characters are so well written and relatable you will find yourself attached rather quick. It is fast paced and easy to read. I am so glad to have received an ARC of this. I will be reading the next one in the series!
