The Graveyard Shift

Rate this book
Guarding a precocious five-year-old who is half-human, half-god, and 100% destined to save the world is no easy feat.

Garrett Swopes was the ultimate skeptic until he met a certain hellion and her husband. They vanished after stopping a catastrophic event and left him, a mere mortal, in charge of protecting their gift to mankind. But when she disappears as well, he needs the help of another breed of hellion. One who can see past the veil of space and time. One who betrayed him.

She will get a truce in the deal, but she will never earn his forgiveness.

Marika Dubois’s son—a warrior in the coming war between heaven and hell—was foreseen long before his birth. But to create a child strong enough to endure the trials that lay ahead, she needed a descendant of powerful magics. She found that in Garrett Swopes and tricked him into fathering her son. A ploy he has never forgiven her for. But when he knocks on her door asking for her help, she sees the fierce attraction he tries to deny rise within him.

And Marika has to decide if she dares risk her heart a second time to help the only man she’s ever loved.

Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.

The Graveyard Shift by Darynda Jones
A Charley Davidson Novella

This story takes place 5 years after the end of the main series. Beep, aka Elwyn, is five and precocious. When she suddenly disappears, Garrett, Marika and regulars from the series search.
Fantasy paranormal romance.

It’s a dream being able to re-enter this world. So great remembering all the characters. Most importantly, it does advance the series. We know that eventually Beep and her army will have to battle Satan. This novella advances us closer to that inevitable war.
I’ve already preordered the next 1001 Dark Nights series novella, The Gravedigger’s Son which is scheduled to be released May 2021. (singing) Anticipation....is making me wait.

**ARC provided in exchange for an honest review**
description

There is absolutely no way for me to explain my love for the Charley Davidson series. I discovered this series back in 2012 and fell in love with the characters. Last year the author concluded the series with the 13th book, which was a very bittersweet moment for me. Spending seven years with a group of characters, you just can't help but feel a bond with them. They become more than just fictional characters, you start to care for them. So when I saw that Darynda Jones was writing a novella, I just couldn't contain my excitement. It was absolutely amazing catching up with all my favorite characters. I loved that this novella focused on Garrett and his relationship with the mother of his child, Marika. There is some strong tension between the two because she tricked him into getting her pregnant. He hasn't been able to trust her (which I can't blame him), but they will finally have to deal with their feelings when their lives are in danger.

I am usually not a big fan of novellas, but the author did an incredible job in telling a whole story. Would I have loved for it to be longer? Of course, I wouldn't want it to end. Fans of this series, you are in for some big surprises. I seriously can't wait for you to read this novella. My mind is blown, and I need Beep's spin-off to happen ASAP. I hope that readers who haven't heard of this series will get a taste and fall in love with the world Darynda has created. The Charley Davidson series is hilarious, sexy, action-packed and so emotional at times. It will have you laughing one moment and crying the next. This is one of my all time favorite series and I hope it will become one of yours as well. You may ask was it really a five star read. And my answer is YES, especially if you have read the series and feel a strong bond with the characters. But I still think it is a great introduction to the series for readers who are new to it.

Update: It was less than 5643 pages long, but more than 30. So I'm calling that a win. It was also amazing, no surprise there.

Now, when is Beep's series coming? The answer better be like, in 3 months and not 3 years.

.............................

I'm gonna need this to be 5643 pages long, thank you in advance.

Oh, who am I kidding, even if it's 30 pages long, I'll still read and re-read it about a thousand times #Iamalmost28yearsold

3.75 Estrellas!

Si no has leído el libro 13 NO LEAS LA SINOPSIS CONTIENE SPOILERS

OMG
OMG
OMG

This novella is one for fans of Darynda Jones's Charley Davidson series. It's written after the last book in the current series and will be appreciated mostly by those who have followed the exploits of Charley, grim reaper extraordinaire and Reyes, son of Satan and their friends.

Charley and Reyes have left their precious five year old daughter Elwyn in charge of Garrett Swopes and a team of loyal protectors. When Elwyn vanishes before his eyes, they search high and low for her only to discover she has left their world. Legend has it that Elwyn will save the world in the upcoming battle with Satan so how will they explain losing her to her parents?

This was a good addition to the series and will hopefully lead into a new series.

New Mexico, USA. Present day. Darynda Jones’ The Graveyard Shift (Charley Davidson #13.5) is a novella that continues Charley and her husband, Reyes Farrow, story which has a friend, Garrett Swopes, who is also a ‘mere mortal’ guarding Charley and Reyes’ daughter, a half-human and a half-god. Not an easy task which, of course, is a massive understatement. Charley is a Reaper who guides the lost departed into the light when she is not involved in her day job, a private investigator. Reyes is the son of Satan who finds his way out of the Kingdom of Hell and falls in love with Charley. They marry, and Beep is the result. Beep, whose actual name is Elwyn Alexandra Loehr, has all kinds of powers.”How did one get into the god club, anyway?” Garrick has to deal with a woman who betrayed him. Marika Dubois. Her and Garrett’s son will be a warrior in the war between heaven and hell. It may seem complicated, but it is a dynamite series. I have missed these guys. 5 stars.

Before I start this review I want to give a quick heads up to anyone who hasn't already read the Charley Davidson series. Normally the 1001 Dark Nights novellas are a great way to test out a series or a new to you author but The Graveyard Shift gives MAJOR spoilers for the entire Charley Davidson series and I REALLY wouldn't recommend reading it before Summoned to the Thirteenth Grave. This is a fab series though so if you're new to the world grab yourself a copy of First Grave on the Right ASAP.

Now we've got that out of the way I want to tell Charley Davidson fans that you're going to love this novella. I didn't realise how much I've missed this world until I got the chance to dive right back into it and it was so much fun catching up with characters like Garrett, Cookie, Uncle Bob, Donovan but especially little Beep who is now a five year old ball of energy who likes to keep all her guardians on their toes.

I don't want to give away too much of the plot but Garrett's life gets 100% more complicated when Beep vanishes into thin air and he's forced to go to his ex Marika for help. There is a lot of unfinished business between those two and I'm glad we got to see them resolve things once and for all. I also loved seeing how much Beep takes after her mother and how much chaos one small child can cause considering how many people she has looking out for her. I really can't wait for her to be fully grown so we can start reading her series! Oh and we also got confirmation at the end of this book that we're getting a novella about Amber and Quentin in May 2021 called The Gravedigger's Son which I'm super excited about!

The Graveyard Shift is a novella set in the Charley Davidson world and it's written by Darynda Jones. Garrett has been a part of the series for so long and I was happy to see that he was going to get a happy ending, so I eagerly began reading this novella. The problem is that I was disappointed in the end.

The events of this book had less to do with Garrett and more to do with Beep and her upcoming books. Did I mention that it ends with a cliffhanger? How many more strikes can I take? I really wanted this novella to be just about Garrett and Marika, but there was a ton of focus on Beep and not on Garrett's actual child. You know, the one who is biologically his and yet is barely mentioned? This book serves as a connection between two series and nothing is really resolved here. Quentin and Amber are supposed to get a novella and I really hope that it will be focused only on them.

I don't think that a person who has not read the series will be able to get into the story and not think that every single thing is absurd. Also, if a reader plans to read the Charley Davidson series then they should do it before reading this book because it's full of spoilers about the final book from Charley's point of view.

I have to give the author credit for finding a loophole that has to do with aging process and I want to see how that will play out too.

Overall, I would not recommend this novella. When I think about what I read in this book the only stuff that come into my mind are Bleep related while this book is supposed to be about Marika, Garrett and their son.

"The fate of the human race depended on a five-year-old who took her coffee black and read horror in her spare time"

I'm so psyched to finally have a little glimpse into what Beep's story could be, I can't even tell you. It was a tiny peek but I'm left salivating for more. Beep is a hoot! I absolutely adored her, and how could I not when she's made of pure Charlie dough mixed with a chunk of Reyes's badassery and a whole lot of spunk sauce that's all her?

I'm gonna pull out all of my hair and chew my nails off completely waiting for Beep's series but I know it'll all be worth it in the end.

Over and out

I love Garret. Ok, I love many of the characters in this world, but like Charley, I have a fondness for this human. 😍 Garret heads up the security team assigned to guard Elwyn Alexandra Loehr affectionately known as Beep along with her grandparents. Only while on duty he loses her. Yep… who wants to tell Reye and Charley? The tale that unfolds brings us closer to Beeps’ books and shares a romance, plenty of twists, and some freaky danger. Eep!

To find Beep, he enlists the help of Marika Dubois. She is the mother of his son and their relationship is, well, complicated. I loved their interactions, the magic and her tenacity.

I cannot get enough of this world and characters. It’s like candy! Jones knows how to weave a tale, even a novella. She delivered tidbits for her fans, teased newcomers, offered a romance and even managed some sexy times all while giving us a glimpse of Beeps childhood.

Grab it, you won’t be disappointed! I laughed, swooned and delighted in the hint of things to come. Cameo appearances from beloved characters sent me over the top and left me craving a cup of coffee.

I don’t read many novellas, usually only the ones that an author sends me. And I think this is only the second novella that I’ve purchased. But it’s from the Charley Davidson universe, so I had to because this series by Darynda Jones is the only series that I would take the day off of work in order to read the latest book… so, of course, I had to read the novella!

It was enjoyable to catch up with Charley and friends, and for those who have never read the series… First off, what is wrong with you! ;) and second, Jones writes in such a way that you get easily caught up if you are new to this universe.

There was still some of the sass that this series is known for and one of the reasons I love it so much. We get to see what is happening with Beep and Ash, and a smidge with Charley and Reyes, which is wonderful. But most of the book focuses on Swopes and Marika.

I’ve always enjoyed Swopes, but usually he was interacting with Charley and that was always fun because Swopes is so straight-laced and Charley is more of an off the cuff type of gal. With Swopes and Marika it was just a lot of tension because of past decisions on both of their parts. The tension and sexual tension was written well, but after a bit the anger was a bit off putting for me. I was happy by the end of the novella because things are resolved in such a way that future interactions with them will be different.

As for the rest of the novella, Jones once again shows her fantastic imagination when it comes to other worlds, monsters, Hellhounds, and more. I enjoyed the descriptions and am happy more members of the team can see into the other world and that some of their powers are becoming stronger… because they are going to need it for the battles ahead.

I’m already looking forward to next year when we’ll get a novella to catch up with Amber and Quentin in 1001 Dark Nights: The Gravedigger’s Son.

“I don’t think I could think of anything I didn’t like other than the book being too damn short.”
~ Under the Covers

What a wonderful surprise and such a gift to be back in Charley Davidson’s world. Only this time, it’s not her world anymore. Front and Center is Garrett Swopes, a former soldier, former PI, and a descendant of voodoo priestesses Marie Laveau. A close friend to Charley and her husband Reyes and now, Garrett is one of the trusted crew who protects their daughter who is prophesied to challenge Satan in a great battle that will save the world.

A few things are going on in this book but let me just touch on a couple of them. First, this short story focuses on Garrett and Marika’s story. We get a glimpse of how they came to be and what their relationship is all about. We know of them from the past books but not the details. I enjoyed seeing their relationship front and center and it’s time Garrett gets some love in his life. Marika is not as bad as I thought she was from previous books. Of course, Garrett is as sexy as ever, though he’s not the Garrett we’ve known him at the beginning of this series. If you’ve read the previous books, you know what I’m talking about. Rest assured, we are getting a little of the old Garrett back before “the big change”. I do want to say that his “being” is still not as clear. There are a few things that occurred that left me with many many questions of what he is or has become. I’m pretty sure something is up Darynda’s sleeve and I can’t wait to find out more.

Second, my favorite part of the book. We are getting Elwyn’s debut story! Yes, she is not the little beep as we know her to be. Everything about her story here shocked me as I didn’t expect any of it. We get a good look at who Elwyn already is and who she will become. Fans of Charley might even get a bit emotional seeing her story unfold. I won’t say much more but I’d like to add there’s a bit of surprise that will make fans like me very happy. I’m hoping this is a sign that a new series is within our reach. I am so very excited. To be clear, Elwyn’s story did not overshadow Garrett’s. Darynda did a great job balancing between the two.

This short novella tied me over and satisfied my cravings for this series. I loved getting back in this world and reading more of the characters I’ve come to love. I’m rating this at five out five. I don’t think I could think of anything I didn’t like other than the book being too damn short. I suppose that’s not enough to knock out a star.

If this is your first Darynda book, know that all things mentioned above are also great introductions to the world of Charley Davidson and getting to know a few of the characters. If you enjoyed this novella, wait until you read the series from the beginning. Charley, Reyes, and the crew will knock you off your feet.

Excuse me while I squeal in delight in getting to return to this world of the Charley Davidson series! What a treat for the fans! Thank you Darynda Jones for Garrett Swopes’ story and of course leaving us begging for more!

When Garrett is put in charge of protecting the girl destined to save the world one day, the pressure is on. Especially being just a regular human being and her a half-human, half-god.

When she disappears one night, he has to go the one person he wishes he didn’t have to, his ex Marika (and mother of his 5 year old son). With Marika’s special abilities, he’s hoping she can help him find her. He’ll have to try and put aside all of the hurt and anger he feels towards his ex. But seeing her also brings up all the other feelings he still has for her. And he’s not alone in those feelings...

With the help from some of their friends, they will stop at nothing to find their special girl and take on whatever comes at them in the process.

I absolutely loved getting to go back into this series! I need more!!

The Charley Davidson story continues but without Charley. After the 'Charley' story ends, Garrett is left behind to watch over 'Beep'. But when she disappears, Garrett has to reengage with his ex, Marika, to find and save her.
Personally, I don't think this is a stand alone story. Reading the Charley and Reyes stories first, provides a context and history that made me very excited to read this book. Mystery, monsters, fights, and a bit of romance kept it exciting right to the end. I think it is a nice transition from the world that was to the one that is coming.
I am looking forward to many more entries to this series to let us know what is happening with all the characters from the Charley Davidson series and the adventures and challenges of Elwyn (Beep).

I loved the new peek into the Charley Davidson world. When the official series ended, Charley and Reyes had resurrected a safety shield around the compound (maybe even the town) to protect Beep (Elwyn) and left her in the care of Garrett, Cookie, Uncle Bob and the former MC gang.

Well, Elwyn is definitely her mother's daughter so things don't go to plan. She disappears right in front of Garrett, leaving him no choice but to go see the only woman he's ever loved, the mother of his child.

This was a novella so it wasn't too long. Surprises happen, one that made me a little sad, but I liked how it all worked out in the end. Plus in the end we get a rather nice surprise but again, one that leaves me a little sad. I guess we'll see what happens in the next novella about Amber and Quentin and eventually when Beep gets her story.

Great addition to this series. Oh and one that must absolutely be read in order. This is one series, you can't jump around.

I liked with this book we got to see Beep growing up. Sure some of the stories about her at different ages are a bit horrifying and funny, drinking coffee, favorite book is a Stephen King one, and this is at age 3. She's just a little precocious, but you have to love her. Beep taking a little trip sure threw everything into chaos. I liked that Garrett went to Marika for help and how the two of them were able to work through their issues along the way. But I will say where Beep was and what happened to her broke my heart. She has so little chance to be a little kid and now this was stolen for her too, even if she seems pretty well adjusted.

Getting the opportunity to return to the Charley Davidson world after the grand finale events of the last book in the series was a sensational pleasure. The author left things at a good spot to finish that series arc and prepare for the new one with the next generation of characters and plot. It was grand to get this novella that bridges that gap and ties off a thread for one of the side characters.

The Graveyard Shift is a novella that falls after the end of the series so it may be a standalone in some ways, my advice is to save it until the reader/listener has caught up with the original series so pretty much everything makes better sense.

Garrett Swopes, ex-military and then private investigator and researcher on Charley's team of help, has seen some crazy stuff. As a human, he took a bit to get on board with all the supernatural woo-woo going on around Charley and an accidental trip to a hell dimension did the final convincing for him. He is all in when he is entrusted with Charley and Reyes' beautiful daughter, Elwyn, to protect and help guide her along with a full compliment that includes Beep's human grandparents, a biker gang, a pack of hellhounds, and Garrett.

As the child of two gods, saying five year old Elly is precocious is a huge understatement. Garrett and the others can barely keep up with this little child's brilliant mind and her powers, but they try to give the little girl opportunities to be a child while teaching her responsibility and prepping her for her future as the prophesied enemy who will defeat Lucifer in battle.

On a walk, Garrett watches Elwyn disappear before his very eyes and he is in no doubt that she was taken by supernatural means. The others are at a loss and coming up empty in their searches. He knows he has to bite the bullet and approach the last person he wants to for help- the woman who pretended to have a relationship with him only to have a child and then hid said child from him until he discovered the truth.

Marika Dubois did what she had to do with the knowledge of the future she got when her mother and grandmother used a powerful, dangerous magic to get that knowledge. She will not feel shamed for using Garrett who came from a powerful line of magic users like her own to equip her son to survive the coming battle he is predicted to fight at Elwyn's side. But, if she is honest, the pain of falling for a man after using him and losing every ounce of his respect still aches in her heart. When Garrett appears on her doorstep needing help locating Elwyn, she is determined to help find the little girl she has come to love from her visits with the family and she is equally determined to keep Garrett from knowing her feelings for him. Too bad, the infuriating man gets through anyway, but he claims she has effected him as well.

The Graveyard Shift had the excitement I have come to appreciate from the series as they figure out how to find Elwyn and come across a supernatural mystery involving weird creatures, the ghosts, and the magic Marika wields and shares with Garrett to give him a fighting chance in a war he has been fighting blind as a human.

I was glad to see Garrett and Marika coming to terms with their past, but I have to admit that I get Garrett's feeling of betrayal so I get why he had hang ups about a woman he was attracted to. I was glad that the focus stayed more on the rest of the story since I couldn't get comfortable with this pair though I'm glad they found their happy.

Oh my, there were some pretty interesting appearances and new situations toward the end that leave me curioser and curioser about the new season of the series. It was great to see Cookie and Uncle Bob, the bikers, and our favorite hellhound besides Garrett on the track of Beep.

Lorelei King has been a fabulous voice of the series and I'm glad she continued with this novella. She has such distinct voices for her characters and does banter so well.

All in all, this was a sensational revisit with many series characters, catching up on where everyone is, and getting things put in place for what is to come. This urban fantasy world continues to amaze and I can definitely recommend the series for those who want humor, action, mystery, bands of quirky friends, and sexy romance all rolled into one.

*Thoughts*

Darynda Jones's The Graveyard Shift is a story that takes place 5 years after the end of Summoned to the Thirteenth Grave. The two main characters are Garrett Swopes, who readers of the Charley Davidson series know very well, and Marika Dubois, the woman who stalked Swopes and had a child, Zaire, with him and kept it a secret. Garrett was given the responsibility of protecting Charley and Reyes Farrow's daughter Elwyn Alexandra Loehr aka Beep from outside harm along with a plethora of characters from Donovan and his bandits, to Robert Davidson and Cookie, to Artemis and fellow hellhounds.

4.5 Stars... We get up close and personal with Swopes in this novella in the Charley Davidson Series... Garrett Swopes is definitely one of the most beloved characters in this series; it was exciting to finally hear his POV and witness the relationship with Marika and Zaire firsthand... In addition, we get to revisit a multitude of characters loved in the series and get our first glimpse of Beep and Osh as their story is yet to be told... Beep (aka Elwyn) is an extraordinary character; it is going to be a sensational journey to witness her story unfold... We even got to experience a bit of Charley and Reyes, YAY! So much goodness packed into this novella... I just wanted more, more, more! Keep them coming Ms. Jones:)
