Still an excellent series, but the premise is starting to wear thin. Same war, same politics, same everything. I still enjoy the series, but I would definitely like something to happen.
Voice narration is still first rate though. Scott Aiello is never lets down, through the whole series.
Cant wait to read the next, see what happens next.
Lots of things going on with the Colony on New Earth. We’ve haven’t been back here for a while, but it’s not calmed down much. General Conner Gates is back in charge of the Colony Defense Force (CDF) and he’s just gone through purging some of the political leadership that was really messing up the entire colony. Some didn’t like his heavy-handed actions, but it got the job done and now it’s time to move on. It’s not like they don’t have anything to worry about.
The Krake are still a problem, out there some where! These are interdimensional aliens that are bent on conquering everything, everywhere! They are highly advanced and have been to New Earth before. The planet’s indigent population, the Ovarrow went into suspended cryo-sleep inorder to avoid further capture and enslavement by the Krake. We’ll, it appears that not all the Ovarrow did that only, a select sect that General Conner’s people found and eventually revived. The Ovarrow are a strange people. They don’t trust the humans even though they are the ones that basically brought them back to life. Conner has been trying to win their allegiance with the help of his wife, Lenora, but they are slow to accept the humans.
So, Gen Conner is going to find another group of Ovarrow that might be more acceptable to an alliance. This new group live way out beyond anything previously explored on New Earth except for the one time a scout time venture out that far and find them by accident. It appears this group did not go into cryo-sleep, but just hid from the Krake. Conner wants to find out how they did that and if they’ll join in his fight when the Krake come back to New Earth. His mission out there needs to be successful, but it’s not going to be easy.
Now we go out to another dimension where a New Earth Colonial Task Force (TF) has flown about eight months ago seeking more information about the Krake. They used a gate which runs on coordinates they though they had figured out. Unfortunately, their calculations were off and returning to New Earth’s dimension wasn’t possible for quite some time. While some of the smart people within the Task Force were trying to figure out the correct settings for the gate, others just wanted to go home. When word got out that they had solved the problem, Colonel Sean Quinn, commander of the Task Force, made the decision to continue on with his mission and that was to find out more information about the Krake. He wanted their home planet if at all possible.
Some of the senior officers within the Task Force objected to continuing the mission. They went so far as to mutiny against Col. Quinn’s orders and even started to fire on the loyal ships of the TF. Col. Quinn succeeded in stopping the mutiny and had the officers involved executed. They have now found some Krake who appear to be against the policies of the Krake and don’t want to be fighting other aliens. They tell them where they can find all the information they need about the Krake. Col. Quinn takes his TF to this location and begins attempting to gather the information he needs. His success isn’t guaranteed and he knows what’s going to happen if he and all his fellow humans are captured - slavery! Will Col. Sean Quinn recognize when he has enough information or will he wait too long?
Meanwhile, General Gates needs to do some scouting on his own. They arrive at a planet in another dimension and find Krade there along with Ovarrow. It appears the Krade are forcing the Ovarrow to fight for them. In actuality, the Krade are just watching the Ovarrow to see how they react when confronted with battle and death! They are making the Ovarrow charge a city that is loaded with Krake weapons, but the Ovarrow can reach their freedom if they can get to the gate in the middle of the city. In the process of trying to find out what’s going on, Gen. Gates gets himself captured. Surely he’ll be able to get back to his wife and daughter?
Quite a few things going on and it’s mostly action throughout the book. We do get to see the end of one particular story-line so these books will have to find something else to follow. That’s probably not a problem since the Krake now know about the humans and are very interested in the humans who don’t willingly accept the Krake as their superiors. I’ll look forward to the next book.
I listened to both books 9-10, but I didn't write a review at the time. Now, I can't remember the books enough to write a proper review. I have to assume I would give both 3 stars, since I have given all the books 3 stars (except for the one that I gave 1 star).
This is a good addition to this solid soft military sci-fi seires...lol
This series does have a lot of feel of a military sci-fi but different books have focused on things outside of the military aspect. This is first and foremost an adventure that is fairly clean and appropriate for readers young adult and above. this is a book that is heavily reliant upon the previous book from the series. Which is not a bad thing because the series is meant to be a fast and easy read. It is fun full adventure and action along with some serious moments that will hit just the right emotions for you. It is not too heavy of a book though it does have heavy consequences especially from the previous book.
where some of the books are focused PlanetSide of the new Earth this one is focused more on the space aspect and finding the threat that is the new alien antagonist. Where previous books have gradually revealed tiny portions or aspects of these antagonists this one seeks to open them up to a greater extent or at least have the characters find a way to. they are some interesting character interactions with some side characters that are alien from the previous book as well as some conflict interpersonal and political that comes into play.
I did find it hard to get back into the story because I taken a break after book 8. I was waiting for book 9 to come out and I got to another series and eventually never picked this one back up until book 10 has come out. If I carried my momentum from book 8 I have no doubt this would have been an easy one day read.
As a hobby writer I am always looking to see where I can approve as a writer. each writer has telltale signs or words they sometimes rely upon too much or even turn of phrases. One of the things I've noticed with Ken Lozito throughout all his series is that when his characters get emotional their throats always, and I do mean always get thick or are thickening, or thicken.... It might be a little pet peeve because I've never heard that terminology in any other series. I have heard of your throat tightening for being choked with emotion but it's this is just a little nuance of his style period and it happens all the time. Just sort of pulls me out a tad bit.
These books do come out at a fairly fast pace so they are streamlined and are not as deep, do make for fast interesting reads. I personally read the series several times but I can also see that this could be a one time read for some people it is still a good read.
This book was one of the better story involving the continuation of the First Colony. Our main group settled down enough on New Earth to start thinking about goals to preserve humanity's continuation. They know that they have to find a way to combat the Krake threat but they also have found an another planet that is capable of supporting human life. In order to achieve both goals, compromises have to be made between the civilian government and the military power group that Connor, our main character developed to protect New Earth. Connor is released from his position as head of the military but he doesn't lose his rank of General, which frees him to pursue his goals of working with the Overaaw, the native species, whom they discovered in stasis pods and had released them. They had dealt with the Krake and still managed to survive, but they tended to not be very cooperative for unknown reasons. An unknown group was discovered in the car reaches on the planet near an arm gate which they were removing parts of to replicate. Connor went back to try to contact them for help or information since the other group only gave him a few volunteers who only came because they owed him a debt. The only information, Connor managed to get was that only certain Overaaw (adults only) had gone into stasis pods and left a whole section of the population to fend for themselves. The separate group that Connor tried to approach were descendants of the survivors who hid successfully from the Krake. They refused to join forces with the humans to fight the Krake but warned him that the Krake will return. Connor decides to use the gate to go offworld for a recon mission but had to battle his way back and suffered a broken back injury but he brought back Intel. While recuperating Sean Quinn and the Trident battlestar group returned from their year-long investigation with more information. Noah is back on his feet and it seems that he is ready to help develop and analyze data for the colony again.
I don't remember how I found this author or this series; most probably, an Amazon book sale. Nonetheless, I have now read the first nine books. Each is about 300 pages are all fast reads. Each book takes me at the most 2.5 days; more likely, 2 days. From the authors own notes, I get the impression he writes them quickly and I think they are deliberately written to be fast reads., which matches the speed of the story(ies). The character development is good; the episodes of the key characters are engaging so each book is a page turner. If you are looking for excellent writing and in depth scientific/technology details, I doubt this series is for you. If you want a good, engaging read that will keep your attention, address basic, fundamental integrity and ethics issues, realistic society developmental issues, and "curve balls" to keep your interest, it is a good series. I did an Amazon purchase that I thinks takes me to book 19 or 20 and will continue to read them. Right now, my methodology, is to read one of the series and then switch to another book, and then back to the series. I like sci-fi series and this one rates up there for enjoyment.
The Krake ARE going to come, and the only real question is when? Sean and the Trident Battle Group are still in the alternate universe trying to learn more about the dangers posed by the Krake. At the same time General Connor Gates is striving to find more information on the Krake from the remaining Ovarrow societies. The CDF has been out of contact with the Trident Battle group for nearly a year, yet Connor refuses to give in to the idea that they have been irrevocably lost.
Three and a half stars. There is nothing wrong with this particular book. It actually nicely ties up a lot of loose ends from the previous stories. The reason I only give it a middling review is that there isn't much new as far as the overall story goes and there isn't any real structure in and of itself. There are a couple minor climaxes in the various storylines but this book has no hope of standing on its own.
I understand and appreciate the level of detail in the political and interpersonal interactions, but could do without the constant reiteration of how attractive Dr. Evans is or the descriptions of how neutral implants work for example. Don't know if I'll come back for book 10 unless it's the final book in the series, seems to have dragged out a bit now.
I absolutely love these books. Some books focus a ton on the science of how things work, but I think the high point of this book is the character and world building. I’m less concerned with the how and why of the universe being built. I desperately want to know how things will Play out for the characters because I am invested in them. The growth of the characters from book to book is just amazing. I highly recommend this entire series.
Ken Lozito's "First Colony" series is really entertaining the enormous amount of world building lends to great tales and stories. Yes, as a main character Gen. Connor Gates is not that different from the typical hero. But there is no better at commanding attention. Sean is really interesting as his protege. The amount of characters around the colony really fill up the possible holes. Its good reading.
Lozito continues an impressive series. Dialog and logic and action are impressive. You want to finish the book to see the next phase of development. Want to see a conclusion in book 10 but I hate to think we will no longer be in the universe of new earth afterwards. Keep up the Series!
I have really enjoyed this series and am excited to see what happens next. I normally love to read Sci-Fi novels/series that have intricate details about “the science”, but the First Colony Series still satisfies. It’s an interesting storyline with believable characters.
I won't go into spoilers obviously, but I will say that I really enjoyed this book. There is a lot of action, but the pace is manageable. I will also say that this was a satisfying book. It closed some loose ends, and answered some questions, as well as reunited people. This story is far from over, and I'm excited to see it continue!
This series is so good, from the first book on none of the books has been a disappointment. It's been great to see the progression of the characters & the colony. Now there is a new threat & it's probably the most serious they have encountered, so it's getting hotter!
The story advanced a little, more info is acquired about the Krake. The superfluous words really get to me.I skipped so much of text and still followed t he story. It's a major downside.
The civilian bureaucratic nonsense is insanely tiresome and gets a bit long in tooth.
My rating is really for the whole series. I couldn't put the first books down, and anxiously await the next book. I keep checking back for the next installment. Author please write faster!.
Now that the teams are all back safely it is time to prepare yet again. Nice that Noah is back and I look forward to him featuring more in the story. Harbinger but he an episode to an end for all the characters and I look forward to book 10
With parallel seemingly unrelated adventures on new earth and in space seeking out the Krake, Conner and Sean have first hand encounters with the enemy. As usual politics and personal attacks cause the usual obstructions making an interesting story.
War is tough, not for the tame or timid. Sean will be okay, Connor is the glue. Nathan and Samson with the others are sword and shield for the future. With help from the Ovarrow, the Krake may not enjoy that future. Thanks for a GoodRead.
Well, I just finished book 9!! It was so good, felt like visiting old friends again. I hope with all of my heart, that you get "First Colony Book 10 out there as soon as possible!! Thank you, your books are great!😁😄😍
Good series. Good flow with well written characters. Never slows down and character growth continues. What would happen if you were in a new colony on a new world then found out you weren't alone? Check it out. Very good read.
The entire First Colony series is absolutely freakin' fantastic. Ken Lozito has a way of grabbing you into his story, not letting you go, and always ALWAYS leaving you for more. Read this series NOW!
I can not get enough of this story. This has been one of my favourites as Ken’s story telling ability levels up every book he pulls us deeper into the minds and actions of his characters.
Mr Lozito, Ken you know we are the Netflix generation, we can't keep waiting for the next episode, please hurry up and get moving with the next one. I am still enjoying the story after 9 chapters so you are doing it right.
I have been reading this series for awhile because it is very good and keeps you on the edge of your seat. Easy to follow and great characters, the story is rock solid in substance and direction. This is a series you should read because it will grab you and hold you.
Seat of my pants reading, here. Really fascinating to see where Lozito is taking the overarching story of this series, and the main characters, whilst still delivering a great plot for this individual book. Great reading!
Reads quickly, action packed with deep insight into both the civilian and military view of how people handle their behaviour in critical situations. Excellent overall. Can’t wait to read #10 and #11. Kelly Griffin, Raleigh, NC
