Outdated, damaging information--it's hard to believe this was published in 2019. A lot of terribly damaging notions about "expressing dominance" and horse behavior that aren't backed up with sources or evidence.
This sentence tells anyone familiar with modern, evidence-based learning and behavior to look elsewhere: "[...] if you stop a stimulus while the horse is still nervous, worried, or scared, the horse will continue to have that same response." Yeah, keep scaring that horse, because if you stop, you'll "reinforce" that fear. Also, people don't know that foals are constantly winning "dominance games" with them.
With the title I expected more about the actual horse's point of view and some deeper dived into it. Instead it felt like a watered down version of a Parelli clinic.
Anyone can pay to get to the levels of the author. As an industry professional there were quite a bit of contradictory statements and dated information in this book. I'd be cautious recommending this to a beginner based on some of the backwards "suggestions" in this book.
I found it to be repetitive and inconsistent. I'd be wary to recommend this to anyone besides a beginner that is already working with a solid foundational expert.
A great book for the natural horseman. I learned a lot about this method of horsemanship. I don't have a lot of horse skills and I just bought my first horse a few months ago. I was a pushover and he, well, pushed me over every chance he got. It spiraled so out of control in two weeks that I couldn't handle him. That's when I started reading this book and learning how to build a better relationship with my horse and how to communicate with him while still earning his respect. I loved how the author would present a common problem, tell you how to recognize it and what the horse is most likely thinking, and then tell you how to troubleshoot the problem to work through it together. The only complaint about the book was it became a little repetitive when listing how to recognize if your horse is relaxed or upset. It was the same list every time in every chapter. Other than that, though, it was great! Recognizing those signs is now so ingrained in my head I can't miss them, which I guess is good and part of the point of writing it in there so many times. I highly recommend this read for horse owners and horse owners to be!
Simple Effective Methods to Become Your Horse's trusted Leader
Of course there are simple methods that might be easy to attain. The author told the readers many signs to let us know that our horse was not feeling comfortable or safe. My hors fit many of these red light behaviors. I thought she was just arguing, but indeed there was worry on her part. Many helpful strategies to learn and use to build a wonderful relationship with your horse. BUY THE BOOK!
It was a very good book, provided good information on the mind of a horse and how to best communicate. Also provided good details on how to properly socialize new foals.
A good basic manual for training techniques, but short on insight into the mind of the horse and its way of looking at things, which was billed as this book's selling point. Worthwhile practical information, but not much more.
