The Way Home: God's Invitation to New Beginnings

Rate this book
Enter the Story of Ruth Like Never Before through This 6-Week Bible Study

Ruth was a vulnerable, widowed woman starting over in a foreign land. While Naomi was returning to community, Ruth was setting herself up to be the odd one out her whole life. What gave her the strength to do it? Could it be that she sensed all along that her journey away from Moab was a journey toward home?

The story of Ruth is a remarkable tale of bravery, calling, and God's provision, and it will come to life in new ways as you dig deep in this 6-week Bible study. Tessa Afshar, author of award-winning biblical and historical fiction, teaches you how to study the text, discern meaning, pray through it, and live it out. She'll show you how to draw on the same strength and courage that Ruth did and accept God's invitation to new beginnings in your own life.

This Bible study also includes optional teaching videos that can be purchased separately to enrich your study.

If you are remotely familiar with Tessa Afshar’s biblical fiction then you are in for a treat with The Way Home. I don’t read a lot of bible studies but I was interested in reading this because I so enjoy Ms. Afshar’s fiction, and I was not let down at all! How she brings the depth of what Ruth did, and how it ultimately impacted the world but also how we can as Christians become closer to Christ. I have already ordered a physical copy and I can’t wait to delve back into it.
My gratitude to Moody Publisher and NetGalley. All opinions expressed are my own

I really enjoyed this Bible Study. I was fortunate enough to do it with her during a zoom session.

I love the book and story of Ruth. Tessa, gives us history lessons prior to Ruth, so that we can get a better understanding of what was going on prior to the book Ruth. Then she took us on a journey that questioned the versus and how they relate in our lives and in these current times.

I was not given this book or nor am I being sponsored by Tessa to promote this book. I enjoyed learning and thinking in ways that I have not considered when it came to the book of Ruth. I whole heartedly recommend this book. In this journey, you will definitely find yourself and Jesus, if you so desire.

This was a fabulous, in-depth study of the book of Ruth (though the first week makes you believe it's not - we spend a whole week looking at the time that Ruth takes place - in the time of the judges). Using various scriptures throughout the Old and New Testaments, Ms. Afshar brings the story of Ruth alive. Though the book of Ruth itself is small - only 4 chapters, this study digs deep and recognizes how Ruth's story was impacted by Israel's past and how her story affected Israel's future (and ours as well).

This study is broken down into 6 weeks, with daily readings for 5 days each. I tackled the daily readings right after work each day and it took about 20 minutes each evening. Most readings had several scripture readings, thoughtful questions to answer and solidly researched information on the Bible, including Hebrew language studies and cultural references. Each day ended with an "applying the Word" section and a prayer. I really enjoyed the layout. The time it took to do was just enough to get my heart quieted, but not detract from the other tasks required of me. The study was very informative and thought-provoking. I learned a great deal and I'm still ruminating on all that I learned.

Having received an advanced copy of the book only, I can't speak to the DVD experience , but I enjoyed the study well enough that I would be happy to go through it again in a small group with the DVD as well. I believe this study could be enjoyed both as an individual study and as a group study. One thing I would recommend, having read an ebook copy of the study and flipped through a paper copy of the Bible - is to have a paper cpy of the study book so that you can make notes and answer the questions in the book itself - and to have an electronic copy of the scriptures where you can pull the book and chapter from a drop-down. I did a LOT of flipping pages in my Bible as the scripture references came from all over. I will say that I did get a good refresher on the order of the books of the Bible that way, though. :)

If you do choose to do a small group study for this, there are also biblically based recipes in the back of the book for snacks! I thought this was a nice added touch.

Special thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced E-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to write a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

Oh My Goodness!!! This book is just what you are missing! I promise you will love it!
This Study of Ruth is simply amazing from the beginning to the end. It is broke down into 6 weeks with 5 lessons for each week. The homework is very easy to follow and it causes you to dive deep into the Word of God.
I have known the story of Ruth for years and this study brought it about in a fresh new light. Just what was needed. The title includes "God's Invitation to New Beginnings" with the way our year of 2020 has been going I cannot thing of a more timely Study the women of this country need! We need a new beginning in Christ.
The breakdown of each lesson was so easy to complete. I really loved it.
I have loved Tessa as a fiction writer and this was just as well done if not better. Every time I read one of Tessa's books I learn something new and I am changed. I guarantee you if you read and do this study you too will be changed.
I loved so many different parts of this book, probably one of my favorites was "If you love Jesus, the story of your life is itself a healing balm to an aching world. Your central calling is to be God's ambassador, his friend, His daughter, His bride: by faithfully living out these roles, you will become a light." I just love that all I have to do is love God and obey Him, it is that easy!
I will be recommending this book to my friends and I will definitely be doing this study again on my own. This is such a great and amazing study!!!
The amount of Scripture that she helps you cross and see how the Bible is all connected I love! I always love when you can connect the Bible, well because it does, but also because it is so much fun to see how God ties everything together!
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.

"It is not merely Ruth and Naomi and Boaz who are given grace for a new start in this book. God is extending an invitation to all of us. Begin new. Start fresh in grace."

This bible study based on Ruth is a 30 lesson study spread out over 6 weeks that will engage your mind, heart, and spirit. Now you may be thinking that thirty lessons on four chapters of Ruth may be a slow-go but I can assure you that it is anything but. Starting from the Book of Joshua and Judges, Tessa Afshar beautifully describes the culture, setting, and spiritual climate of when Ruth lived during the time of the judges. The author offers fantastic insights, ties in biblical events and historical information, carefully explains Hebrew words and their depth of meaning, and challenges our faith with gentle, inspired words. Her gift for words clearly shines through, even in a non-fiction study.
Each lesson is divided into three sections - understanding the Word, applying the Word, and praying the Word - and each lesson points back to Jesus and "God's invitation to new beginnings". You'll learn more than just about Ruth and her journey of love and faith through this study; you'll hear the voices of the faith giants speaking to you from the Word and hear our Lord's voice calling for faith and restoration.

This is not my first bible study on Ruth but I've learned the most from this particular study. I would love to do another study written by Tessa Afshar!

I received a copy of the book from Moody Publishers and the author. I was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.

As part of the launch team for this book that is to be released on June 2, 2020, and a fan of Tessa Afshar for years, I had high expectations for this first Bible study that she has written.

And I was not disappointed.

Peeling away the layers of God's Word and trusting the reader to respond genuinely, thoughtfully and in all her rawness, Tessa weaves Bible truth after truth together to bring nourishment to the soul in a way that quenches the hunger and thirst of longing for more.

I had to sit at times to ponder the depth of what I was reading. In a world that rushes and hurries, we cannot afford to do so any more. In a world full of "agains" and fails, the need for hope that is based on a firm foundation is more needful than ever. Count me in.

Like a close friend, "The Way Home" is a companion much like Ruth was to Naomi. Faithful, loving, unconditional, sacrificial, loyal, strong, merciful and friend.

Citing other women in the Bible, Afshar brings chapter after chapter of her study to life with context and research. It's delightful! Get ready for a trip that begins with one page turn after another. Accounts of love, war and redemption await! So relatable! When all seems lost and hopeless, Ruth's Godly rebellion and actions/choices save the day.

I highly recommend this book. Why? Because with words that you read, and with your pen in hand, you will find that God is with you. You are seen. Known. Held. Loved without reservation. By the God of the Universe. His filling will give you cause to be satisfied.

It did and has for me.

I have done a lot of Bible studies through the years and have read the story of Ruth numerous times in the past. Even so, I was blown away by the insights brought to light and soul-penetrating realness of The Way Home: God’s Invitation to New Beginnings, Tessa Afshar’s new six-week Bible study on Ruth.

Afshar has long been one of my favorite Biblical fiction authors, so when I learned she had written her first Bible study, I jumped at the chance to take part. I admittedly had high expectations, but even those were far exceeded by The Way Home!

Set up with four days of intensive study and a fifth day of summary and review each week, the book sets the stage for Ruth’s story by delving into Joshua and Judges, exploring the time period and relationship of Israel with her native land, Moab. As readers progress through Ruth’s story, they are directed to numerous verses in the Old and New Testament and explore the meanings of Hebrew words, the significance of various actions in their cultural context, and how every element was woven masterfully into God’s plan for redemption through His Son, Jesus Christ. Afshar lovingly encourages study participants to dig deeply into Scripture, pray over the challenging questions posed, and apply what they are learning in their everyday lives.

I received an advance digital copy of the study through NetGalley and completed it on my own. This was the perfect option for me during the Covid-19 stay-at-home period; however, the book is also ideal for a small group study, and a companion video is available that would no doubt make the experience even more impactful. As an added treat, Afshar includes recipes for various dishes that would have been eaten in Ruth’s day, and I can imagine these being used for a special treat in a group study.

Although I received a complimentary copy of The Way Home, I was under no obligation to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are entirely my own.

I read Tessa Afshar's fictional account of Ruth, In the Field of Grace, back in 2014 and have been in love with the way she brings biblical characters to life ever since.
Accordingly, when I saw Tessa's first ever 6 week bible study about the in depth aspects of Ruth experiences, I jumped at the opportunity to preview it. I took my time working my way through as Tessa's insights are richly detailed and meant to be savored. I like the way each chapter is broken up, Understanding the Word, Applying the Word, Praying the Word, then Overview and Conclusion. I especially treasured the "Praying the Word" segments.

Tessa is so gifted at peeling away the biblical layers and her cultural knowledge of the times is bar none. She sums up what we can learn from Ruth from the beginning,
"The book of Ruth teaches us about God's activity on our behalf in the midst of the storms of our lives. Ruth and Naomi's story shows us how to persevere when pain robs us of breath."
And also this jewel, "Because at the juncture of every failure, when pain takes root and life seems almost unbearable, again and again we see God's mercies rise up, and give birth to redemption." Such truth!

I highly recommend The Way Home to readers who want to learn more about Ruth, the Bible and yourself. It was a blessing to read and I appreciate Moody Publishers via Netgalley for making a copy available for review. All thoughts and opinions are my very own.

Weaving story with biblical truth is Tessa Afshar’s specialty. I have read all of her fiction books based on Biblical characters and found them well researched and gripping. This Bible study would be best done in a group, with feedback from the other readers. I love the book of Ruth and I think Tessa did an outstanding job of diving this Bible study into short lessons. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this Bible study. Much food for thought. Well done.

This study moved me so much. I had always loved the book of Ruth but my eyes saw so much more through this study. It is amazing to see how much goes into creating a bible study such as this. And the prayers at each section were so powerful! Recommended.

Deep and eloquent - the story of Ruth will become real to you, as you learn the cultural and prophetic implications of each event. Like Ruth, you'll learn to cling to your kinsman-Redeemer, through the rich readings and study prompts. You will be blessed 10x over by this study and the lessons will linger and change your spiritual outlook if you prayerfully complete this book.

Are you looking for a good Bible study on the book of Ruth? The Way Home by Tessa Afshar is an in-depth study that would be great for either a group study or to do on your own.

The Way Home is a six-week study about both Ruth and relating the Bible to a life with sub-title of "God's invitation to new beginnings." The book starts with an introduction from the author. Then the six week study sections. Each week includes five days worth of study with Bible readings, questions and prayer. I was also pleased and surprised to find a recipe section with recipes that Ruth, Naomi, and Boaz may have eaten at this time in history. They looked to be easy to follow and fun to try--especially if you are in a Bible study group. I think it would also be fun with my family but I am a "foodie." There is also some extra sections in the back for those who are using the DVD with the study, which I did not do.

All in all I really liked this in-depth study. I found it to be helpful to me learning about the Bible and growing with God. I would highly recommend it to a group to do together. I think it was set up similar to some that my women's group has done at church from Beth Moore with every bit as much Bible "meat" in it. I found things to be explained well in The Way Home and I liked the places where the author shared her own stories. Tessa Afshar helped bring the Bible to life for me and helped me learn new things through the study. Of course, this is no surprise to those who have read her Biblical fiction books as she is known as being an author who brings the Bible to life.

I received a copy of this book from Moody Publishers. All opinions in this review are my own.

This is by far the most thorough and applicable Bible study I've ever done. I expected it to mostly follow the story of Ruth and draw out questions and themes. While it does that, it also dives into the Old and New Testament, the time of the judges, cultural laws, word studies, and more to really set the framework for what Ruth conveys under the surface. It's a story I enjoy and learn from every time anyway, but I love Tessa's ability to bring the Bible to life in a new light. And all the challenges she presented were very timely for me (and timeless for spiritual growth in general). I highly recommend this if you're looking for something to help you examine your heart, grow closer to Christ, learn more from a timeless story, and appreciate how God writes all of history--from what's recorded all throughout the Bible all the way down to our own lives today.

The last few weeks I have been honored & blessed to read and study The Way Home by Tessa Afshar. My love for the book of Ruth combined with my respect and appreciation for Tessa’s writing, made this a book not to be missed.
I knew it would be amazingly wonderful and insightful, but it went far above my highest expectations! I have done many Bible studies in my lifetime, both for my personal studies, and as a Sunday School teacher, and this one is without a doubt one of the very BEST I have ever experienced.
I love that Tessa didn’t type out all of the Scriptures, but she gave the readers the references and we get to dig in deep and study the Word for ourselves. I loved every moment of it!
It truly was like looking into the mirror of God’s Word and seeing myself as God sees me. (James 1:22-25) So many days I would open the Study and my Bible and God broke walls around my heart that I didn’t even know were there.
I wept, I repented, I worshipped.
God used this study to reveal many things to me about myself, but He also revealed many new things to me about Himself. I thought I had let go of past bitterness, but God showed me there were hidden roots still embedded in my heart. He used her words to help me pluck those out and take steps forward to healing and grace.
This is not a simple, easy, pat little five-minute study to check off your daily devotions checklist obligation and leave unchanged.
This Bible Study is life-changing.
It is convicting and at times, uncomfortable, as the readers allow God to open their eyes to His truths and allow Him to cover over and give grace to their hidden struggles. It provides a fresh start and breathes hope into weary souls. It encourages readers to lift their eyes to Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. It was very eye-opening, enlightening and educational in so many ways and I am sad it has come to an end. God used this study to bless my heart and draw my soul closer to Him as my Redeemer. I hope Tessa writes more studies in the future because she is such a gifted Bible teacher and you can tell she does her research. I simply cannot say enough good things about this book and I will be recommending it to others. I hope to host a Bible study in my home later this year and share this with friends..

The Way Home: God's Invitation to New Beginnings, by Tessa Afshar, is an in-depth Bible study on the book of Ruth. Designed for 6 weeks of study, this well-written, well-researched book contains 30 lessons that closely examine all 4 chapters of Ruth by exploring the cultural, historical, linguistic, and spiritual significances of the story, the characters, and the setting. With obvious skill and conviction, Ms. Afshar draws attention to the beauty and importance of Ruth's story and shows how it plays a prominent role in the Lord's plan of redemption for his creation.

Relying heavily on scripture and Ms. Afshar's thoughtful insight, this study provides ample space for the reader to interact with the Biblical text and to record his/her own thoughts, ideas, reflections, and prayers. As it nurtures and enhances the reader's understanding of the book of Ruth, it encourages the reader to connect personally with the book of Ruth and apply its themes and teachings to his/her daily life.

Over the course of a month, I completed this Bible study on my own during my daily devotional time. I found it to be thoughtfully written with careful discernment. I learned much from this study and the depth of meaning Ms. Afshar highlighted as she explored Ruth verse by verse. This is a study I will certainly revisit in the future, and I am eager to encourage my friends to complete this study as well. It might possibly be one of the best Bible studies I have ever completed.

Perfect for individual or group study, The Way Home is rich with meaning, full of wisdom, and brimming with encouragement. Offering genuine hope for all people, the book of Ruth is certainly worthy of sincere study, and Ms. Afshar has crafted an excellent source that offers the reader an opportunity to do just that. I highly recommend it.

I look forward to reading Tessa Afshar’s books, not just because of her beautiful stories, but because I know that the historical research she incorporates into them will enable me to understand the setting and people in a deeper way. When I saw that she had written a Bible study on the book of Ruth, I was hoping she would explain the details of Ruth’s background and combine it with a thoughtful look at the Biblical account. I was not disappointed.

This Bible study is encouraging and challenging. Tessa Afshar establishes the historical context for the book of Ruth by explaining customs and also including word studies. She leads us through a series of questions that not only has us taking a close look at the detail in the Scripture passages, but applying the principles of the book to our own journey of faith. Each day has three sections: “Understanding the Word”; “Applying the Word”; and “Praying the Word”. I was, and will continue to be, blessed by my time spent in this study. I am also looking forward to seeing the video series that accompanies this study. This would be an excellent study for a ladies’ Bible study group.

I am a fan of Tessa's writing! She consistently blows my mind away with her writing. I was excited to get my hands of her first Bible study and was pleasantly surprised with how deep it got. I love that she doesn't just give you what scriptures says, but rather that she makes you really open your Bible, study the scripture, break it down and let it seep into your being.

The Way Home is a study of Ruth that doesn't just stay in Ruth, but also goes through various other scriptures to keep you focused on God and your personal walk through the study. This is a study that requires your time, but doesn't rush you through it. This is an excellent study to do with others, but it's also a powerful study to do alone.

I loved the study and the DVD sessions. I am glad to own it and can see myself re-doing this study down the line. I highly recommend this!

As an avid reader of Biblical Christian fiction, I have learned a great deal from the extensive research Tessa has put into her novels. And now a Bible study teeming with her gift of teaching the culture as she uses words and phrases that communicate right to the heart. Through the study of Naomi, Ruth and Boaz, Tessa delivers the rich and true depth of what God has for each of us. And I don’t want to miss that!

This is a deep dive into the book of Ruth, with some extensive forays into Judges. My husband and I did this study with another couple and we all learned a ton, and got tremendously blessed by our time spent. We also used the companion DVDs, but those aren’t necessary to the study itself, just nice extras (plus Tessa is super cute). Highly recommend it!

UPDATE: I just finished the six week Bible Study and I am in awe. This study gave me a closer look into the lives of Ruth, Naomi and Boaz. It was amazing. I have learned so much and I am going to miss my quiet time each day studying God's word in the book of Ruth. Ruth "just happened" to glean in Boaz's field. I would say my main take away is that these women had no hope and at the end, their hope and redeemer came by Boaz, but 1000 years later their Redeemer came as their progeny.

I read Afshar's fictional book based on Ruth and absolutely loved it. When I saw that she did a Bible Study on the Biblical book of Ruth from the Bible I knew I had to do it. I am so glad I did. Honestly, I am only on week two, but I had to let everyone know how amazing this study is from the get go. It begins actually before the book of Ruth. It begins in the book of Judges because this was the time in which she lived and it gives a great back drop to the study. There are four days to do the Bible work and one day to reflect on what you've learned. I will guesstimate that each day took around thirty minutes or so to do. I am learning so much and absolutely being blessed by it. I will come back when I am done with the book and give an update on this review.

This Bible study is SO POWERFUL! Tessa Afshar's gift of writing fiction that draws you in, makes this Bible study stand out. Weaving the story of Ruth into its place in the whole counsel of Scripture, diving deep into the heart of the story and teaching me some cool stuff.

I thought I knew a lot about the book of Ruth before, but now, it's become real in a whole new way. My Kinsman Redeemer is one who will act, and it's okay to ask for more than we have a "right' to expect because He delights in blessing those who demonstrate love and loyalty and faith!

The 5 days a week format is very helpful because life is busy. I think days 1-4 took me about 15 minutes each, and day 5 took maybe 7 minutes.

I received a copy of this book from #NetGalley, and chose to review it here. All thoughts are my own.

Ruth is one of my favorite bible stories, and so I jumped at the chance to do a study on it. This is a study I know I will come back to again and again over the years!

First of all, I love how Afshar doesn't just stick to the book of Ruth in her study. She gives references, background, and other bible verses that will really speak to your heart, and at the same time give the book of Ruth a whole new meaning. Sure, I am familiar with the story, as most Christians are. But Afshar takes you deeper. She shows you how you can apply the same principals in your own life. She makes the text applicable to today. She challenges you to examine your own heart, your spiritual walk, and make some changes.

This is not a study to do overnight. It is meant to go slow, to dwell on each verse, each note, each reading. It is meant to have you dive deeper into God's Word, and understand the examples that are presented. While I read this on my own, I think it would be a wonderful study to do as a group. Small group or big group, there is plenty of things to discuss. Afshar provides several though provoking questions that could even be expanded on during group study.

If you are looking to dive deep into the bible, get a better look at Ruth and her story, then I highly recommend this bible study! I also recommend writing your answers on a separate piece of paper or notebook, that way when you do the study again in the future, it'll be like looking at it with a fresh pair of eyes!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I was looking forward to doing the Bible study of The Way Home after I read Tessa's book "Daughter of Rome" and found out she was doing this study on Ruth. I've always loved the book of Ruth as it shows such a beautiful example of God's great love for us. Diving in, in a deeper way, was something I was looking forward to.

While I knew I was going to learn more about God, I didn't realize how starkly I was going to see myself in relation to many of the people we study in The Way Home. It reminded me over and over again how desperately I need God! It's somewhat hard to put into words how much I learned about God through this study as well. His care for us, His protection, His love, etc are shown over and over again. I also saw myself sadly, in the many examples of people she used in her teachings. Whew, how often is it difficult to see how much we haven't changed from the times in the Bible?

Often times I felt like Tessa was speaking directly to me as she guided and directed our study. I appreciated her straightforwardness and her encouragement. Through God's word and Tessa's prompts, over and over again I felt such a strong and palpable need for more of Him.

The amount of time Tessa took to research the Scriptures and bring everything together in a wonderfully cohesive study makes me thankful to her all the more! I was able to make connections I'd never seen or fully understood before. One of the pieces that really gave me insight to Ruth was to where Moabites and Ammorites came from! I don't know how I didn't make this connection in the past and have a better understanding of where Ruth's heritage came from.

I also really took to heart taking in the word study that Tessa does throughout The Way Home. Dabaq, hesed, gilbowr, and go'el are just some of the words we dive into during this study. Honestly, there's just so much depth to this study, I can't recommend it enough.

The end of the study has a fantastic section of recipes from Old Testament times. Along with the paperback study, Tessa also has a set of teaching videos that go along with it. The last part of the book has a section that goes along with the video to answer questions as you follow along.

While I realize this is a study intended for women, by the time I was halfway through the study I realized it was something I wanted my boys, my husband, and I to go through together. Usually I'm not one to redo a Bible study. I'm one and done, but this one, I'm happy to go through it again. And hopefully we'll be able to do it with our women's small group at church! They can count me in for a 3rd time around!

*I received a .pdf version of this study in exchange for my review. This is my opinion.

I’ve always been impressed in how Tessa Afshar can take you into the world of the Old Testament, she always describes it in so many details, it feels very real. To be honest, that’s why I picked up this study, to see if her studies are like that, too. And I can say that, yes, they are. There are a lot of fun little facts about the Biblical culture thrown in, and you can see how much research went into this. A LOT of research. This study is very thorough and after a bumpy but necessary first chapters I came to love it and I can say it has enriched my life and really made me think. There are many hidden gems in Ruth and Naomi’s story!

However, the first week is quite heavy! I get it is necessary to explain exactly where the book of Ruth is taking place, so we delve deep into the Judges. For me it was really hard to keep going because it didn’t really click with me, if you feel the same just keep pushing because it gets a lot better!

Another thing that has put me off a bit is that you need to look up so many verses all around the Bible. As it often was just for a verse or 2 I really wish those would have been printed inside the book as it made my concentration waver a lot, those were the moments I would put the study down. That might also be because my Dutch translation is of course a bit different so words mentioned I needed to translate in my head (you do find out how different the Bible can be in different languages, that was kinda cool).

But all in all, the good outweighs the bad by far, because this is a rich and very solid study that makes you think about your own choices and I really loved it! I’m normally not into studies, but this one has really had a positive impact on my faith and I can really recommend it.

I received a free copy from Netgalley but it hasn’t influenced my opinions.

The Way Home has given me an entirely new perspective about Ruth, the young widow who chose to leave her home in Moab so that she could remain with her mother-in-law Naomi. Starting over without your husband would be daunting enough but Ruth was also choosing to abide by the customs and lifestyle of Naomi's home land, Judah. Little did she know that her entire life would be changed by her decision, along with the lives of Naomi and Boaz, a relative of Naomi, who came to their aid. These three people were given new beginnings from God: "a new heart, a new spiritual life, a new future and life."

This is an outstanding six-week Bible study that illuminates Ruth's story and in turn, encourages readers that they also can have new beginnings. This study is very in-depth, and it includes questions and Bible scripture in each of the thirty lessons. I especially liked that each day's study has three sections: “Understanding the Word”; “Applying the Word”; and “Praying the Word” and I found myself highlighting many of the author's observations.

Tessa Afshar is noted for her biblical fiction but she has blessed me with this extensive study of the Book of Ruth. She reminded me that God redeemed Ruth, the Moabite, with the same abundant grace that he showed Naomi, the daughter of Abraham. I have been strengthened in my own faith and inspired to seek my own new beginnings because I have also been given that abundant grace! I recommend The Way Home for personal bible study and I believe that it would be a valuable resource for a group bible study also.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher. All opinions are my own.

This Bible study by Tessa Afshar is an in depth study of the book of Ruth. It is a 6-week study with a portion to study for 4 days and then an overview and conclusion on day 5.

Each of the four days has an understanding the Word, applying the Word and a praying the Word segment. Each day's study can take from 20-30 minutes or up to an hour to complete.

Day 5 summarizes the concept(s) learned that week.

What I loved about this study was how interactive it was. Each day's teaching includes a number of Bible verses and prompts to get the reader involved in the lesson. Questions are asked and you are given the resources to find the answers in God's Word.

I would recommend this book for anyone who wants to get an overall understanding of the book of Ruth or who wants to jumpstart their time with God.

I reviewed an e-ARC of the book, but would recommend that you get a physical copy or a journal as there are many questions and activities along the way.

I received an advanced reader's copy from the publishers and NetGalley; a positive review was not required.

The Way Home
I have read the story of Ruth many times. I just never stopped to study and understand it until now. Tessa Afshar’s The Way Home shows an honest, soul-searching approach to Ruth. Tessa Afshar has been a world renown Christian author who shows us the life and times of Biblical figures.

Afshar’s story covers the time and history of Israel during Ruth’s life. Tessa encourages self-study and reflection of scriptures from the Old and New Testaments and how this applies to God’s plans for our own lives. This Bible study is definitely worth your time. It will help you have a closer relationship with God.

I was sent an advanced copy from Netgalley for an honest review. This study works as an individual or group study. I’m going to recommend The Way Home to my Sunday School classes. These opinions are my own. Thank you for letting me be part of this wonderful group.

A new Bible study is releasing this week on the book of Ruth. It is written by Biblical Historical fiction author, Tessa Afshar. She takes the participant through an in-depth six-week study. As a member of her launch team, I’ve had the opportunity to work through the study myself, learning and growing as I discover truths about Ruth and her purposes in God’s plan.

The first week of the study is spent getting a sense of the context in which Ruth lived. During these five sessions, the study focuses on the book of Judges. The Bible study is designed with four days of study, and a fifth day titled Overview and Conclusion, which gives opportunity to go deeper into the concepts studied.

The sections of each daily study include Understanding the Word, Applying the Word, and Praying the Word. Tessa says in the instructions of how to use the study, “You will need to commit to honesty, to the kind of openness that is willing to face the deepest wells of your heart. This study was written to bring you close to God, and the only way that is possible is when we are transparent with ourselves and with Him.”

In my own experience with this study, I discovered that Tessa introduces topics and questions that initiate prayer so that I can enter into a conversation with God about the Scripture readings and the application. On average, each daily study requires about 30 minutes to complete, but I found that some days took longer because I needed to spend time thinking through and praying about the issues the Bible study uncovered in my own life.

I like how Tessa provides background information about the meaning of names and behaviors of cultures. She ties together passages from various places in the Old Testament to provide solid context for the story found in the book of Ruth.

She asks deep, open-ended questions that are too complex and potentially life-changing for trite answers. As I mentioned earlier, often I had to pause and pray about how to answer the questions.

This study may be completed alone or with a group. It is appropriate for any age, and is mostly designed for women, but teens or small groups made up of men and women could relate to this study.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. All views expressed are my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

The Way Home by Tessa Afshar is a 6-week Bible Study of Ruth. The First week starts out studying the book of Judges with the other 5 weeks focused on the book of Ruth. This is not just a study of Rith because Tessa uses Scripture from the rest of the Bible to show how Ruth's story is interwoven and connected with Jesus and the rest of Scripture. She uses Scripture throughout the Bible to explain the culture of Ruth's time and to go deeper in understanding God's Word.
I liked the format for each week of study. Each week contains an introduction, 4 days of study and a 5th day, which is an Overview and Conclusion of the week. Days 1-4 consist of sections entitled- Understanding the Word, Applying the Word, and Praying the Word.
In this study Tessa breaks down and explains the verses but she doesn't just spoon feed the information to you- she asks questions to make you think about and study what you are reading. She explains Hebrew words and shows where they appear other places throughout The Bible.
Recipes are included at t j.g e end of the study. These recipes pertain to food that may have been eaten during the time of Ruth, Boaz, and Naomi.
A listening guide for the video teaching is also included in the book; however, the study can be done without the videos. These videos are sold separately.
Tessa describes the book of Ruth as..."The book of Ruth teaches us about God's activity on our behalf in the midst of the storms of our lives. Ruth and Naomi's story shows us how to persevere when pain robs us of breath."
This Bible study is a study that will take you deeper into God's Word- helping you to understand His Word, apply His Word, and grow closer to God. I recommend this book to anyone- those looking to grow in their relationship with God, those having doubts or struggles in their relationship with God or even people struggling in their life seeking help and hope in the midst of their storms.
I received a copy of this book for my honest review. All opinions expressed in this review are my own.

The story of Naomi, Ruth and Boaz has a special meaning for Ms Afshar having studied their stories when she researched her novel based around their lives. And now she brings all that research and wisdom to an excellent Bible study.

This is seriously one of the best studies I've done. It has everything: tremendous research into the original language, the customs of the time, insightful commentary on the text and challenging reflections for the reader. One can't step away from this study without being changed.

Interestingly, it's geared towards a female audience, however, don't let this put you off men, because the key messages of the Book of Ruth and Ms Afshar's study are all very relevant to us too.

There are 6 weeks broken down into 5 days of study and reflection. Each day's study involves commentary, application and closes in a powerful prayer. Most weeks, the reader is encouraged to write a letter expressing their feelings and desires to Jesus. I found this a particularly useful application as I used these 'letters' as a form of written prayer. Each week wraps up with an overview on the fifth day.

I particularly appreciated Ms Afshar spending time at the beginning of the study on the book of Judges, her research into particular key words from their original language and their usage in other parts of the Bible, and how she closed it in Week 6 with an emphasis on new beginnings walking with Jesus.

There are a series of recipes at the back of the study plus the outline for the accompanying 6-part video series.

I'm especially pleased I've done this study and I will be recommending it to my friends. I received a complimentary PDF copy as part of the launch team for the book with no expectation of a favourable review.
