All her life, Princess Adalina heard tales of the legendary, immortal warriors known as the Nihryst. Cursed and bound to a deck of tarot cards by her ancestors, the Nihryst were stranded on a remote island nearly a century and a half earlier.
Her brother, Prince Shane, is destined to rule the kingdom of Detmarya. Though preparing for this role has encompassed his entire life, control of the kingdom may come sooner than expected due to their father’s sporadic behavior.
Discovering the king's plan to set a war in motion with a mass assassination, Ada unwittingly joins a crew of pirates in search of the only beings powerful enough to stop him: the Nihryst. Meanwhile, Shane and a group of underground rebels make a haunting discovery of a plague infecting the streets of Detmarya.
With a looming deadline to save multiple kingdoms and thousands of innocent lives, both royal siblings join quests worthy of Ada’s beloved fairy tales.
YA/NA multi-genre author Cait Marie has enjoyed reading and creating stories her entire life. Her 2020 fantasy debut, The Lost Legends, encompasses her love of fairy tales and adventure while her following book, The Last Summer, shows her appreciation for fluffy-but-moving contemporary romance.
In the time since, she has continued publishing in both genres and has plans to expand into science fiction, steampunk, and dystopian worlds.
Cait is the creator and manager of the book blog Functionally Fictional, works for YA Books Central, and offers a variety of author services, including editing, proofreading, and formatting. In The Lost Legends, the first of a series, author Cait Marie gives us a very readable and entertaining fantasy tale with prophecies and myths, journeys and pursuits of lost lands and people, romance, and some swashbuckling adventure.
We are introduced to Princess Adalina or Ada of Detmarya who has been brought up on the legend of the Nihryst—a group of thieves-turned warriors, made immortal by a curse given by her ancestors, and rumoured to live on the island of Cyfrin. The Nihryst are now only the stuff of myth but Ada who has been told these stories and given a book and a deck of cards representing them by her (now deceased) mother is sure that the book and cards together have given her enough clues to find Cyfrin. Ada is closest to her loving older brother Shane (heir to the throne) and their childhood friend Philip (now a royal guard), since her mother’s death changed their father beyond recognition. Shane however discourages her from her belief in what he thinks are mere fairy tales.
One day when Ada overhears a conspiracy involving her own father, she must leave Detmarya and go in search of the Nihyrst, for it is only them who can help her (and Shane) defeat the dangers facing their kingdom, in fact the world around them. At the docks, she hires a ship led by Captain Lee who is willing to take her to her destination in exchange for gold. But are the clues she found in the book real? Does she actually find the Nihryst?
Meanwhile, Shane remains at home where he learns of yet another danger facing their people. But it is with people dubbed as rebels he must work to find out more about it and protect his home. In this he faces new dangers, while also trying to keep Ada’s whereabouts a secret and their father’s plans at bay.
This was a fun and entertaining read which I enjoyed very much. The story is told from Ada and Shane’s points of view (though in third person), and we follow their two separate threads or adventures.
The fantasy realm that the author creates has kings and princesses, curses and prophecies, immortals and pirates, or in other words all the right elements for a fun adventure. There is a definite Robin Hood inspiration, in the names of people and places, and also in the actions of Captain Lee and his crew. The plot in itself with the legend of the Nihryst and the prophecy was perhaps a typical fantasy one but was executed in a very engaging way and I enjoyed it all through. While set in a fantasy arena, we have some reflection of real-life and present-day (actually perhaps, age-old) concerns like unscrupulous bids for power, and a mystery illness afflicting people for which there seems no immediate cure. This is an action packed read, with something happening at every step, some twists and surprises (some of which one does see coming), and also a fairly prominent romance thread.
The author gives us a very likeable set of characters. Ada, our heroine, may be a bit naïve but she is resourceful and brave, not letting anything much deter or discourage her, and she never gives up belief or hope. In fact, even though we follow the parallel thread with Shane, her storyline shines through in some ways more than his. In Shane, we have a prince who truly cares for his kingdom and the well-being of his people, for which he is ready to face risks and his father’s wrath. We also have Captain Lee and his seafaring crew, Brienne and Ren among them, who have much more to them than first meets the eye, and the rebels William and Gwyn, who also have their own stories and secrets.
I liked that while this was the first part of a series, it did wrap up part of the story quite satisfactorily while keeping the door open, in fact even commencing the next part of the tale, leaving the reader eager to see what happens next, and where the adventure takes our characters.
Princess Adalina has grown up with the legend of the Nihryst, a group of cursed, immortal warriors. Her older brother, Prince Shane, wants her to forget those fairytales their mother told them, but when Ada happens to overhear their father, the King, planning for war against their neighboring countries, she has to flee the castle and get help. The only ones she can think of as strong enough to stand up against her father are the Nihryst, and she's determined to find them. She manages to get aboard a pirate ship under the leadership of Captain Lee, and even if they're not very helpful to begin with, Ada's not giving up.
I've read Cait Marie's contemporary romance stories earlier - which I really enjoyed - and I'm very grateful for getting the opportunity to now read her fantasy books. And I really love "The Lost Legends"! A mix of Robin Hood and Pirates of the Caribbean - what's not to like?! A mythical legend, pirates, a tough female protagonist, great friendships and an impossible(?) romance - this book has everything I like! Unexpected twists even makes it better, although I wasn't surprised by all of them. I'm so excited to see what happens next, in "The Lost Prince"!

Disclaimer: A review copy of this book was sent to me by the author in exchange of an honest review. All thoughts are my own!
This book was, …., I’ve just finished it a few minutes ago and I’m speechless. The Lost Legends ruined me, broke me, made me laugh, cry well it did so much with me. It was a real rollercoaster of emotions. I swear! I was hooked from the very first chapter. That writing style. Everything was just so fluent, easy to understand, simple and the worldbuilding was beautiful. I liked the storyline a lot and the fears of reading about a hurt character were so real. I literally prayed that nothing bad would happen to my favourite characters.
I loved the fact that we could read this story in the point of views from the siblings Ada and Shane. With this writing choice, the reader could read about everything happening in the castle and all the things happening on sea. It was quite interesting to read the thoughts and decisions the siblings took and also to follow Ada on her quest. I liked that a lot and couldn’t stop reading. I’m actually glad that I’ve read the book on my kindle otherwise I might have thrown it against the wall because my heart broke somewhere during the book, just to mention what this book is doing to a poor reader’s heart. So cruel, but jokes aside I kind of loved that part. It was powerful and felt so real. I also had a clear image of how the characters looked like and it was so refreshing to read about book princesses or princes not being spoilt brats. Thank you for that!
The only thing I have to criticize is: Where the hell is the sequel?! After that end I definitely need it. But I guess that I will have to learn to be patient. At least I have something to wait for. That’s good, right?
Overall, The Lost Legends was a great fantasy novel that might teach us a lesson or two. If you’re a beginner in the fantasy genre or if you are a fan of this genre, The Lost Legends is going to be your book.
I wasn't sure what I expected going it but it supposed every hope I had for this story. It's a book that is ACTUALLY as good as it sounds. Rare, huh?
Ada and Shane are the children of the king. Their mother died many years ago but not before instilling a belief in Ada about the mythical immortal warriors, the Nihryst. When she stumbles upon nefarious plans in her own palace, she knows she has to get help to keep the kingdoms from descending into war. As she runs from the palace to find beings that may not exist, her brother stays behind to protect the people.
I loved each and every one of these characters but Ada has most of my heart. She's a strong-willed force to be reckoned with. I love how much faith she has in things others say can't possibly be true.
And the love story. Swoon.
Okay, I'm done raving because you just need to read for yourself.
I was really happy to have received an eArc of The Lost Legends by author Cait Marie. Cait is a member of my online book club TBR & Beyond and I was glad I could support her by reading and reviewing her book.
The Lost Legends is a reimagining of Robin Hood meets Pirates of the Caribbean and an unexpected dash of Tangled. Now that is a recipe for success. Many years ago Loxley and his merry gang known as the Nihryst have been banished to a faraway island and cursed to live as immortals. Princess Adalina has always dreamt of finding and freeing them. From the time she was a little girl until she is forced to exile herself to save her kingdom her whole life has been about the Lost Legends. As she boards a ship of not what she expected pirates to escape her father, Adalina will be met with a lot of challenges.
The Lost Legends is told in the points of view of the siblings through third-person narration. We follow Adalina and her brother Shane on both of their journeys - Adalina in her search of the Nihryst and Shane left behind by his sister to find out more of the King's plans. I feel like this was a smart choice for the author as it permits us to continue to learn more about the kingdom and what is happening there. It does give us a lot more worldbuilding than if the story followed solely Adalina.
I have to say that my favourite point of view was Adalina. I related to her more than to Shane though I did enjoy Shane's character arc. Adalina came off as a stronger character. I sense that she grew a lot more than her brother as a character throughout the journey.
During The Lost Legends there were a lot of surprising twists and turns. Some I did see coming but a lot I did not. It left me quite intrigued for what will come next in the story of the Nihryst. The pacing of the story was a bit slow in some parts for my taste. I did like that it allowed us to breathe but I would've loved for it to move a bit faster in some parts. Though when the action got started it went just at the right tempo.
This was a great debut novel and a great start of an epic story. I can't wait to see what Cait Marie comes up with next
Thank you to Cait Marie for providing an eArc of her book in exchange for an honest review.
Definitely cannot wait to read more by Cait Marie. The Lost Legends pulled me in and I couldn't put it down until the last page! Love the characters and how they interact together and cannot wait to find out what awaits them in book 2!
I loved every second of reading this. There was a constant mixer of action, adventure, and romance. Loveable characters with individual personalities. Health friendships and betrayals of women. Kick butt heroine who's able to cry and kill. I can't wait for the next one. This is definitly up there on my favorite series list.
It was very intriguing, to say the least. I loved all the characters, especially the trio of Shane, Philip, and Adalina. There are several plots in motion, some get resolved in this installment, rest I am looking forward to in the next books! There was not a single dull moment, and oft, I felt I was living with the characters themselves. At one stage, it gave me strong Throne of Glass vibes. I really hope I get to know more about the legendary group of Nihryst in the next books.
OMG this left me wanting more. This one has all the pieces of a great read, legendary warriors, pirates, an evil king and a plague. The author did a great job of creating exciting chatacters, some you will like and some not so much. They are all unique to the story though. I also enjoyed the great character interactions. I loved this story and can't wait to read more. I highly recommend this one.
Thanks to Cait Marie for providing me with an e-copy of this book! I loved this book omg, it had Tangled meets Robin Hood meets pirates vibes and I was here for it all. the characters were so well developed and I loved the dual perspective between Adalina and Shane. Their brother and sister relationship was so wholesome and I really loved the genuineness. The quest and adventure for Adalina to try and find Cyfrin was exciting and interesting. I also liked that Shane had his own plot line with the sickness and people and in the kingdom. I adore Lee so much and he is the perfect contrast for Adalina. There were also a few twists that I feel like I should have seen coming, but I didn't because I was just so encapsulated by the overall story. Lost Legends also had a romance with a bit of fade to black, closed door action and I loved the couple pairings. I could definitely pick up on a few Tangled references and it's one of my favorite movies so that was great to see. The banter between the characters was also a delight. I have so many good things to say about this book and honestly I'm so glad it's a series because I can't get enough of these characters and what's happening in the world so far.
So, for a debut book, this thing is phenomenal (and I’m not just saying that because the author is my emotional support Hufflepuff and I’m slightly biased). I’m in the comedown period from The Cruel Prince and the Grishaverse books, and this is comparable in quality.
I read it so fast. Like, could not put it down. It took me like 8 hours, and that was with taking care of kids and periodically working on a research paper.
It is well written, the character development is superb, and descriptions and details are concise but enough to paint the picture for you.
Within the first 20 pages I had found my first ship, and I ship it HARD.
If you have read the Grishaverse books, there’s a character in The Nihryst that reminds me so much of the puppy pirate. He is my favorite.
I was super bummed when the book ended, because I still wanted more. I can’t wait for the next one.
It would definitely be worth your time to read this book, because we stan a queen who can weave these types of tales.
In Cait Marie's The Lost Legends, readers are whisked away on an enthralling adventure that transports them into a world teeming with danger and unexpected discoveries. This captivating fantasy novel introduces us to Adalina and Shane, sibling royalty, who each embark on a different quest, but are still linked intrinsically. Can they save everything they know from destruction? Will what they discover will forever change their lives? Cursed tarot cards, ancient immortals, swashbuckling pirates, rebel forces, and epic romances all add an extra layer of wonder and intrigue, making each page bristle with anticipation.
Cait Marie demonstrates a masterful talent for world-building in The Lost Legends. From the intricately designed realms to the vivid descriptions of magical phenomena, the author paints a vivid backdrop that immerses readers in a rich and enchanting setting. With a careful blend of action-packed sequences and quieter, introspective moments, Marie skillfully balances the external conflicts and internal struggles of the characters, allowing readers to forge deep emotional connections with both Adalina and Shane. Their growth and development throughout the narrative lend an authentic and relatable dimension to their characters, drawing readers further into their lives.
The Lost Legends also offers a refreshing mix of familiar fantasy tropes (i.e. fairy tales) and unexpected twists. While some elements may feel familiar to seasoned fantasy readers, Cait Marie injects enough originality and surprises to keep readers engaged. Adalina and Shane's individual journeys are peppered with intriguing subplots, secrets, and revelations that add layers of complexity to the overarching narrative of their combined quest. The writing is polished and engaging, guiding readers through the story with ease. Marie's writing style strikes a pleasing balance between descriptive and concise, allowing readers to visualize the scenes without getting bogged down in excessive detail. And the dialogue is well-crafted, revealing the distinct voices and personalities of the characters.
The bottom line: Cait Marie's storytelling prowess shines brightly in this first installment, leaving readers eagerly anticipating the continuation of Adalina and Shane's extraordinary saga.

Fairy tales are steeped in folklore. We all know there are elements of truth behind such tales, no matter how small that truth is. We sit and imagine we are the princess’ need saving. Or, at least, their best friend that can reap a few benefits. We dream on going on a grand adventure like one of our favorite fairy tale character’s.
Princess Adalina got such a chance. She didn’t need saving, oh no. She took it upon herself to do the saving. The Royal Princess knew from childhood what was in store for her, her destiny, in a fairy tale and dreams. It called out to her, and she answered, “I will find you one day… And I will set you free” (Marie, loc. 80). Finding the Nihryst, was not all. Her brother and a guard must hope Adalina is right, while they pretend nothing is wrong.
The characters grab you at the beginning of the story, to where you must read it in one sitting, or you feel you are missing out. Cait Marie lures a reader in, making them believe they are a part of this tale traveling with Adalina on her grand journey. Not just that, you feel the intensity and heartbreak of her brother, Prince Shane and his best friend (and her’s) slash Royal Guard, Phillip. The story makes you feel you are there, and you wish you could be there to help.
This book is beautifully written, and it does not feel like a self-published book, but one from a publishing house. It feels like you are watching a movie in your head. You feel, see, and taste what the characters do. What they wear, their movements, the feel of the breeze on their faces.
If you are into story tales with strong characters, like Sarah Maas’ Celaena Sardothien in the "Throne of Glass" series, you will love this book.
I received an Advanced Reader Copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm just going to start with that when I finished this book I was 18 levels of miffed because I didn't have the sequel to pick up right after I finished the last page. This story sucks you right in and you never want to leave. The characterization is done so phenomenally that you feel like you know these people and you feel their hurts and their happiness. The writing is so well done and the story never dulls. You are flipping each page, eager for the next one. You will fall in love with Ada, Shane, and Phillip as quickly as I did, if not quicker. Then you meet the pirates and there is no way you won't love them. Just trust.
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It's so good. So, so, so good. Seriously, I needed the sequel yesterday and I am going to be eagerly awaiting the next book. Is it out yet?
For a debut novel, Cait is crushing it! I cannot wait for what happens next.
If you like Susan Dennard and the Truthwitch series, I feel like you would definitely love this book. I highly recommend. If 10 stars were a thing I would be giving them to this book.
I really liked this book. I'd give it either a 3.5 star or 4. It was gripping from the offset and it began with a story (within the story). It also began with action (within the story), which I personally loved because it was thrilling. The reason I gave it this rating is because there were some bits that I felt was a bit brief however it didn't take anything away from the story and I loved it overall.
I really liked the characters. Pirates are definitely a huge YES for me and the whole immortal pirates thing was even better! I loved the use of cards in all of this, it made it seem more mystical.
Personally though, my favourite character was Phillip. He was a great friend and it may have touched upon some lgbtq+ rep in this book.
Overall, a lovely book and I will definitely continue this series

I was lucky enough to get an Advanced Arc for an honest review:
I loved this book by Author Cait Marie. I love books that are driven by the characters in the stories and I have to tell you this debut novel by Author Cait Marie did just that. From the moment I began the book, I could not put it down. Each of the characters are essential in the story. Immediately I connected with the one of her main characters Princess Adalina. This debut novel has it all and the storyline is amazing. I was so mesmerized by the flow of the characters and storyline which will keep you intrigued all throughout. Bravo to debut Author Cait Marie for bringing this story to life and I can't wait for more from this amazing Author.
You can definitely close your eyes and see the world the author has written for you. Royalty + Pirates + Hidden Secrets AND awesome Ada (FMC) = great book one!!
Well, wasn’t that just fabulous!!! I’ve been meaning to read this book and start this series for awhile now. I bought it for my Kindle app ages ago! For those folks who love (young) adult style fairytales, this is for you. There’s mystery and pirates, secrets and intrigue, love and quarrels! The characters are interesting, funny, and endearing. You know I love a female lead! I’ve been reading a lot of adult romances recently and this isn’t that, but the storyline is enough to keep me interested. The romantic stuff in the book is just an added bonus. Loved this book and am starting the next one immediately!!!
This was a phenomenal read that was enough to keep me going until I had finished it in one day. The author does a great job of explaining and helping you visualize their world. You can close your eyes and really see what each character is going through as well as what they are seeing in the world. I enjoyed the plot and am eager to see where the next book will take us.
The Lost Legends is one of those books that has everything in it. A princess, an evil king, pirates, a mysterious plague, and an unforgettable love story. This book never left me bored and kept me turning pages, eager to find out what would happen next.
What worked: The twists in this story blew me away! It was written so incredibly well. The tension between the king and Shane and Adalina kept me biting my nails, wondering if they were going to be caught at some point. The entire book held this exciting sense of adventure, especially the parts about the pirates and searching for a way to break the curse. The romance between Ada and Lee was unexpected. I figured she wasn’t going to end up with her almost betrothed, but she’d said she was in love with him so I didn’t think she’d end up with another guy. I loved it that I was wrong. They had some mad chemistry together. Watching the characters try to stop the plague was fun as well. I’m eager to read the next books to see what will happen next!
What left me wanting more: Not much! The only hangup I had was that Adalina and Lee moved a bit too quickly physically for my taste. I’m not a huge fan of sex in teen books anyway, especially where the characters aren’t exclusively together. I did appreciate that the sex was fade to black. The sex stuff was basically my only issue with this book. Everything else was completely fantastic.
The Lost Legends is an exciting plunge into an alluring world filled with danger and intrigue. Readers won’t be disappointed with this wonderful book!
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book was simply awesome! Ada is such a strong protagonist who faces down her fears and doubts of others with a refreshing fierceness and vulnerability. Her brother Shane is the crowned prince who is fighting to not only learn about his people, but risks his life over and over to best serve them. Phillip is their best friend and I can't say enough how much I especially love the relationship between Ada and Phillip! There is SO much love between them and it's completely platonic and wonderful.
Lee is clearly the gorgeous pirate in this story and the complexities that surround him make the story so interesting. The trust he and Ada build is fascinating to watch and grow, as is their physical attraction.
Brienne is another favorite of mine - she is definitely a fantastic supporting character and I love the scenes with her.
Excellent adventure with magic, romance, strong friendships and fierce loyalties. Can't wait to read book 2!
This is such an amazing and captivating book. I could not stop reading and completed it under 24 hours. Follow Adalina on an amazing journey with love, hate, joy and sadness. Will she find what she has been looking for her entire life? The world building is done very well and all the characters are relatable. I highly recommend this book for teen to adult. I received a free copy of this book for an honest review
The beginning took me a little effort to get into, but the story picked up about halfway through. I think the biggest letdown for me were the characters. I struggled to connect with them and felt like I was outside of the story rather than experiencing it with them. I really liked the overall premise and the magic system, and for those, I'll probably read the next book eventually!

In The Lost Legends our main character is Ada who is the princess of the Kingdom and was raised on the fairy tale of the immortal Nihryst that are bound in service waiting to be freed. After finding out about a dangerous conspiracy that the mad King is planning, Ada embarks on a journey to free the Legends lost in history so they can put a stop to his nefarious plans and save the Kingdom. She joins a mischievous group of rogues who are going to help her get to the lost island before time runs out.
Ada is such a sweet character, I love her so much! She is a really good and strong female lead who is stubborn and proves that you're never too old to believe in fairy tales. It was so easy to connect with her and I really admire her determination and drive. She is definitely on my list of favourite female characters. All of the characters are so well written it is impossible not to fall in love with them!
I loved the writing throughout this book, it was so well done and drew me in straight away. It hooks you at the beginning and doesn't let you go. Once I started the story I couldn't put it down! I ended up finishing it in one sitting, even though I had to get up super early the next day it was 100% worth staying up for. There were so many good action scenes and the romance was just *chefs kiss*.
There is something for everyone in this book, you'll definitely see your favourite tropes executed perfectly. It definitely gave me the same feel that Disney movies do! Honestly, Disney need to get Cait on their team of writers for their future films, it's criminal that they haven't already!
I loved this book and I can't wait to read more from this series. If you're looking for a beautifully written romantic adventure that will give you all of the feels then you NEED to read The Lost Legends!
Thank you again so much to Cait Marie for this opportunity to read her incredible book!
Growing up with the stories of the Nihryst, Adalina wants nothing more than to find them and break their curse. Her brother, Shane, thinks they are just fairytales and pushes them aside to focus on being a good prince for their country. However, since their mother died, their father has grown colder. When Adalina gets caught overhearing talk of her father starting a war, she's forced to flee the castle. Her only hope is to find the Nihryst and enlist them to help stop the war.
Adalina lands herself on a ship with a witty and comedic Brienne and a brooding, handsome Captain Lee. Lee doesn't like the idea of escorting Adalina, but he accepts the job even without knowing all of the details. She's on her way to find the clues of the island the Nihryst were trapped on. While Adalina is gone, Shane discovers how bad things are in his kingdom and wants to do anything he can to make things right. Along the way, he discovers a rebel group and decides to offer them his assistance.
The two siblings are in a race to stop the war before it has the chance to start. Both make shocking discoveries and have help from their friend Philip. Even though Lee is grumpy most of the time, he is always there to help Ada when she needs it. Soon, her heart grows fond for him, but she's a princess and he's a pirate.
THE LOST LEGENDS is a story full of adventure and about following your heart no matter what others tell you. I love every single character in this story. Cait Marie does an amazing job at making you fall in love with each and every one of them. Shane is strong and cares for his kingdom. Adalina believes in the impossible. Phillip is supportive of everyone and will do anything he can to help. Lee is so sexy and loyal. After this debut, I'm excited to see what Cait Marie has in store for us next.
Final Verdict: I would recommend this to fans of fairytales, pirates, adventure, prince and princesses, and romance.
Oh my gosh. This book was so amazing! I was given an early copy to read and review and I’m so happy to have read it. Ada is a strong heroine that you can’t help but love and root for! And Lee...such a strong man who played such a good role in this story! It was full of pirates, sword fights, magic and a kingdom in danger.
The writing was clear and descriptive to the point I felt like I was watching a movie. It’s been a long while since I had read such a lovely book.
And the love story is one that will last well past the pages do this book. All in all I give this a 10/10. It will definitely sit on my book shelf right next to my favorite book.
