Sometimes murder is the only way to get even…The gripping new Scottish crime thriller that you won’t be able to put down. Perfect for fans of L J Ross and Val McDermid.

‘A deliciously dark and twisted tale that kept me reading late into the night’ Graham Smith, bestselling author of A Body in the Lakes

Four friends with dark secrets. One killer out for revenge.

DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod are tasked with investigating the brutal murder of a defence solicitor’s wife in Dumfries.

It’s been over a year since they left the town after an investigation robbed them of a dear friend. But now they’re back and must find a way to move on.

When the son of another defence solicitor is murdered, a strange tattoo etched on his body, the case takes them into darker, more disturbing territory.

It leads them back into the past – to a horrific fire in a cottage that took a woman’s life, to four friends harbouring dark secrets – and finally to a killer waiting patiently for revenge.

Praise for Avenge the Dead‘Expertly plotted, I was completely engrossed in the investigation and the lives of the characters, there were twists and turns all the way through keeping me on the edge of my seat… definitely a “just one more chapter” kind of read!’ Sharon Bairden, Chapter in My Life

Di Frank Farrell #3

The wife of a defence lawyer has been killed. A young boy has been stabbed to death. And this is just the start. DS Mhairi McLeod is having to hold DI Frank Farrell together. His drinking is getting worse. Farrell is using alcohol to self medicate to try and block out his guilt. This case is set in Dumfries, Scotland. The only lead they have is from something that happened years ago.

Frank Farrell is a complex character. He had been a priest before joining the police force. He now struggles with his faith. This is a twist filled and suspenseful read. Its brutal and gritty in places, it's also action packed. This is a great addition to this police procedural series that's set in Scotland. I was hooked from the beginning.

I would like to thank NetGalley, HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter and the author Jackie Baldwin for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

DS Mhairi McLeod and DI Frank Farrell are called to assist in the investigation of a prominent defense solicitor’s wife murderer. The husband’s alibi seems pretty weak but when the son of another defense solicitor is murdered Frank knows that they have to dig in deep to expose secrets in the past to find the killer before he targets his next victim.

Avenge the Dead which is the third book in the DI Frank Farrell series.. An engrossing crime police procedural thriller with flawed characters this book kept me hooked to the end and cannot wait for the next one in the series

I would like to thank the TBC Reviewers request group & the author for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

Avenge the Dead is the third instalment in the Dumfries and Galloway-set series featuring Detective Inspector Frank Farrell. Frank, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Dave Thomson are sent from their hub in the heart of Glasgow to Dumfries which unfortunately stirs up many negative memories for Frank. They are there to investigate the murder of an esteemed local defence solicitor’s wife, Gina Campbell, and shortly after the adopted son of another prominent Dumfries solicitor is brutally slain; it begins to seem as though someone is looking for revenge against those in the legal profession. Is it a previous client who was unhappy with their conduct and blames them for what happened to them or is the fact that it involves more than one solicitor merely coincidence? Soon the police are overwhelmed by the number of tips coming in about the killings and each one will have to be investigated thoroughly.

This series has become one of my favourites as it strikes the perfect balance between developing the recurring characters’ lives and providing a totally absorbing new case. However, I do feel Frank’s problem with alcohol and Mhairi covering for him because of it got a little tiresome although I understand why he is in such a state. It is an excellent, utterly engrossing piece of Scottish noir with a fascinating case and a plethora of twists, turns and clever misdirection. The action never stops and from the moment I picked it up, I simply couldn’t put it back down. There is a decent pool of possible perpetrators and I must admit I usually guess where it’s heading but the resolution of this story came completely out of the blue for me, and I love being shocked. All in all, it’s an excitement-filled read that is thoroughly entertaining and keeps you guessing. Many thanks to One More Chapter for an ARC.

I would like to thank Netgalley and Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter for an advance copy of Avenge the Dead, the third novel to feature DI Frank Farrell.

When a prominent defence solicitor’s wife is murdered Frank, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Dave Thomson are sent to Dumfries from their new base in Glasgow MIT to investigate. They are happy to reunite with their old team but less happy with the memories. Their job gets more complicated when the son of another defence solicitor is murdered.

I thoroughly enjoyed Avenge the Dead which is an engrossing read that held my attention throughout. The novel is told from the investigative point of view, mostly Frank’s, so the reader has the same clues as the team - not that it did me any good as I had no idea until the reveal which, to be fair, has a few previously unmentioned and unsuspected elements that put a whole new slant on things. Nevertheless I enjoyed the journey with various motives and suspects all playing their part and long hidden secrets coming back to bite. There’s never a dull moment. The plot should be taken as entertainment as realism definitely takes a back seat to excitement and events.

Their last case in Dumfries led to a colleague being seriously injured so none of the team is happy to be back. Frank especially has been heavily affected. He is a former priest and has lost his faith and tries to heal the hurt with alcohol. Asa result he is in danger of losing not just his way but his job. Mhairi is the one trying to hold him together. That sounds quite gloomy but despite a few relapses and some angry outbursts he seems to finding his way back by the end of the novel. There is even a hint of potential romance in the air so it’s quite positive.

Avenge the Dead is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.

A gritty police procedural wher the team of Farrell, Mhairi, and Thomson were sent to Dumfries to solve the murder of the wife of criminal solicitor. The suspense ratchetted when another murder occurred, and the team realized that it was connected to a case 10 years ago.

My first book by author Jackie Baldwin, the third in the series, I loved the speed in which the team worked. Due to the happenings to their colleague in book 2, Farrell was at the last strings of his sanity, so this case was mighty important to him.

Though the murders flummoxed all of us, (yes, I too kept thinking about what could have happened 10 years ago) it was Mhairi who held my attention. She was all professional with a tinge of a tender side. I loved how she took charge when Farrell was incapacitated (read as drunk).

The writing kept to the facts of the story with few off-shoots, the author made a serious police procedural damn entertaining with criminal lawyers as suspects. The clues inserted by the author were subtle, I kept turning pages hoping to get a better angle to the murder. Suspense started slow but soon came to its peak. The reveal was shocking to say the least (no, I couldn't guess. Blame my ill-health)

Complexed, flawed characters, a killer on a rampage for revenge, a team which was struggling to solve the clues, an author who kept a tight leash on all of them made this a fascinating story. Tap... Tap... Tap...on the kindle screen I went right up to the end.

P. S. Lithium and alcohol should never be mixed. They cause impairment of thought and judgment. The lead cop Farrell took both. Hence, I felt he couldn't be a good Detective, didn't impress the doc in me.

Firstly, let me say that AVENGE THE DEAD is the third installment of the DI Frank Farrell series and I suspect that readers would benefit from starting at the beginning before tackling this one. However, having said that, I did thoroughly enjoy the story...I just wish I knew more of what was going on with the backstory that readers are just drip-fed throughout.

When a prominent solicitor's wife is murdered, DI Frank Farrell, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Dave Thomson head back to Dumfries from their new base in Glasgow to head up the investigation. The team had formerly lived and worked there but returning appears to stir up memories for them all, particularly for Frank. The team suspect Gina's husband Fergus but he had been playing poker with two other defence solicitors, Jack Kerr and Max Delaney, at the time. Then it soon comes to light that the murdered woman, Gina Campbell, was having an affair with another solicitor and was the daughter a Glasgow mob boss Mario Lombardo. Could her death have ties to her father's seedy business dealings?

However, when the son of another solicitor is murdered, the case becomes more complicated. Aaron Sullivan was in the process of being adopted by Jack and Sarah Kerr. So how does his death connect to that of Gina Campbell?

But when it is revealed that all three solicitors - Fergus Campbell, Jack Kerr and Max Delaney - share a history of having been present shortly before the tragic death of a colleague in a fire 10 years before, Farrell begins to wonder if the deaths are somehow linked to the past? If so, is Max Delaney's family next?

Then out of left field, the bullish sheriff presiding the bench these same solicitors appear before daily winds up dead, found hanging in his courtroom one morning. How is Sheriff Granger's death connected to the first two? And does it also have something to do with that of Collette Currie ten years ago?

The third installment in the DI Frank Farrell series by Jackie Baldwin, I wish I had known that AVENGE THE DEAD was part of a series. Not for any other reason than it is irritating to feel like you have come into a story halfway through and seemingly spend half the time trying to pick up pieces that may hint to the backstory. In this case, it was mentioned throughout that Farrell was taking Lithium. There is no reason given why he does, so I can only assume major depression or Bipolar. That, and the subplot regarding their former boss, John Lind who has been laying in a coma for the past two years. No idea what happened there. Just that it is.

Having come into the series partway through, I still enjoyed AVENGE THE DEAD and love the Scottish backdrop in rural Dumfries rather than the bustling and seedier Glasgow. I did find Farrell's battle with alcohol a little tiresome, but then for me that's a bit stereotypical of many police procedurals that I find a little too common for my taste. However, I do understand why he is in such a state...I just tire of the same old cliche of lonely detective seeking refuge in a pint glass.

Twisted and often dark, AVENGE THE DEAD is utterly engrossing where the action never stops and I found myself turning page after page, unable to put it down. I love love love the short snappy chapters which always keep the pace going and is my favourite kind. There is never a dull moment.

Despite the twists and the plethora of possible suspects, I guessed very early on who was behind the murders and why...although not all aspects, so happily there were some surprises to be had as they were revealed. But even so, this never spoilt my enjoyment of this fast paced action packed police procedural slash crime thriller. For me, I just thought it was obvious...with a mega clue staring readers right in the face.

AVENGE THE DEAD is thrilling read that I have no hesitation in recommending though I do suggest starting at the beginning of the series.

I would like to thank #JackieBaldwin, #NetGalley and #OneMoreChapter and #HarperCollinsUK for an ARC of #AvengeTheDead in exchange for an honest review.

Avenge The Dead is an exquisite case study on how the past never truly can stay buried. Life in the spotlight can have dire consequences. The invisible bands that hold together relationships and families can violently tear with no means to be repaired. The story paints a vivid picture of how an action change the landscape of one’s life forever. This gritty police procedural ticked all the boxes. Jackie Baldwin gently coaxed me down an unsuspecting path before setting her trap – I aimlessly walked straight into it and she wasn’t sorry a bit! I greedily lapped it up like there were no tomorrow.

DS Mhairi MacLeod and DI Frank Farrell are pulled in to assist with the murder of a very prominent solicitor in Dumfries. Are things as straightforward as they seem? The husband has an alibi, but it seems weak. Is it always the spouse that’s to blame or is there darker avenues at play?

The investigation has many hurdles, none so prominent as the obvious turmoil that DI Frank Farrell is suffering from. He’s a mess. Can he really be trusted to lead an investigation appropriately and to completion? Drinks a problem. Bottling up his emotions has become a problem. it’s obvious that something needs to be done. This humanity and realistic reaction to trauma was especially well done. Although I wanted him to get better, the depths of my feeling for the situation was one of empathy.

Avenge The Dead tackles some particularly difficult topics. We are fed the idea that the murdered wife was less than faithful to her solicitor husband. An affair with another solicitor. Is it possible that either her husband or her lover could have murdered her? Is she keeping any other secrets in her closet or is the husband? The author led us on a merry trail of betrayal, secrets and brutality. The clue finding was an adventure and I was more than ready. Buckled up and ready to go.

We are catapulted into the fire alongside our detectives once again when it comes to light that another murder has been committed. This time, a son of another solicitor. I know what you’re thinking…what’s the connection between the solicitors? Buy the book to find out, I promise you won’t be disappointed. Some of my estimations were way off the mark, its actually laughable just how wrong I was. The author skilfully pulled the wool over my eyes, I was blind to it. The pace was like a bullet…swift, complete and without mercy.

Avenge The dead is seeping in the need for justice. Clear your schedule because you won’t rest until that last page has been digested. Jackie Baldwin discusses dark themes with compelling authority.

I have read all of Jackie Baldwin's excellent detective series featuring former Roman Catholic priest. DI Frank Farrell. This is the third book in the series and I have enjoyed every one of them. I felt that this was the best yet and I couldn't put it down, but at the same time didn't want the book to finish as it was so good. Well done Jackie and I'm really looking forward to what I hope will be a fourth book in the series.

In Dumfries, a young solicitor’s wife is stabbed to death in her own house. The husband was covered in blood and his prints are on the knife, but he has an alibi from 2 criminal defence lawyers and a prosecutor from the fiscal office who says that they were playing poker with him at the time of the murder. The 2 children were at the nanny’s house. The local police ask Police Scotland for a Major Enquiries Team and DS Mhairi Mc Leod, DI Frank Farrell and DC Dave Thomson are sent to investigate as ‘the three of them hale from the area’. Both Farrell and Thomson bring their tom-cats along. (as for now I know r's not essential info for the story but merely a side-event, adding a bit of flavour to the soup?)
It’s quite clear that something happened during a previous investigation when they all worked for Dumfries police that resulted in the loss of their boss who was also a dear friend. Well, he’s not dead but maybe even worse is that she’s in a semi-conscious coma. Especially Frank is still suffering from this and seeks salvation in drink, what’s not beneficial for his level of functioning.
It doesn’t take long before they hear the rumour that Gina was having an affair with another lawyer. But even stranger is the revelation that the poker party was in reality, a 10th anniversary of the death of Colette, yet another lawyer who was engaged with one of them (Peter Swift). She was burned to death in a cottage while the men were staying in a hotel nearby. On top of that, the father of the victim is a retired casino-owner with supposed mob ties.
But a couple of days later an elderly dog-walker finds the stabbed body of Aaron, the foster son of one of the witnesses under a bridge. Is someone targeting family members of lawyers? Just any lawyer or only this specific group?

I didn’t read the previous volumes in this series and that didn’t give any serious problems with understanding this storyline. It works as a standalone but I’ve gotten curious about the other stories now, so I’ll probably read them anyway. The characters are realistic and likeable, they’re all a bit flawed as humans tend to be and intriguing enough to wonder how things will evolve in their lives.
This is a straight forward police procedural with a crime that needs solving, a few red herrings along the way send you in the wrong direction and a number of lines of inquiry are meticulously investigated and eventually one after the other is excluded. Stubborn sleuthing and perseverance (in this case teamwork) eventually finds the killer. It’s a very well written mystery, you keep on guessing till the end how everything locks together and who the murderer is (well, I had a hunch but didn’t see how it could be done). Sometimes it doesn’t need to be more than that. It’s a very entertaining story and I’ll definitely read more by this author.
I received a free ARC from Harper Collins.UK through Netgalley and this is my honest review.

Okay, I literally just finished this book—it's been one of those weeks—about 30 minutes after my self-imposed "you have to start writing at this point" rule. So you're getting pipin' hot opinions here, fresh from the oven. I haven't had a chance to reflect too much on the book as a whole, but I think I can find a thing or two to say. Because of my time crunch, I'll leave the synopsis bit of this post to the Book Spotlight that I posted—it's brief, but it does the trick:

Like many other police procedurals from the other side of the Atlantic despite being called the DI Frank Farrell series, it's about several characters—most of the investigative team. Honestly, I'd rather read about Mhairi McLeod or a couple other minor characters than Farrell—she seems more complex and interesting than he does. That's more of a commentary on her than him (and I think if I'd been around for the whole series, I'd appreciate him more). But you spend enough with the team as a whole, that it's simple enough to get your fill with all the characters.

Baldwin's prose is pretty bare and straight-forward, making it easy to read this. Things keep moving smoothly, and the juggling of the many witnesses, potential victims, personal lives and investigative lines doesn't feel too much like juggling. However, particularly at larger moments—pivotal scenes—I think she drifts toward over-writing in the way she works to emphasize how important the scenes are. I'm not sure how well the story is actually served with the Prologue, set ten years before the action kicks off, I think it distracted me, as I kept waiting for elements discussed in it to be brought up later (much later, it turns out)—and I can't help but wonder if just starting after it would've been better.

This is the third in a series, and it's pretty clear that the first two installments were pretty eventful. Baldwin does an adequate job of catching the new reader up to where they need to be, but I think she could've given us a little more. This can be read as a stand-alone just fine, but to fully appreciate everything, you're going to have to go back and read the first two, I think.

Overall this is a satisfying read with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing, a handful of characters I'd like to get to know better. Avenge the Dead sucked me in , deeper than I'd have guessed with the characters—can't complain about that. I'd gladly read others in this series or by this author, and I bet you would, too.

My thanks to damppebbles blog tours for the invitation to participate in this tour and the materials (including a copy of the novel) they provided.

Time has passed since events at the end of Perfect Dead - if you've not read it, don't panic as everything is covered - and Frank, Mhairi and DC Dave Thomson have relocated to Glasgow to be part of a Major Inquiry Team.

A murdered woman in Dumfries sends them back to the police station there for Farrell to head up the investigation. A lawyer's wife has been murdered. Frank and the team start to look into her husband and his two best friends, who are also lawyers. But before they can delve too far into things, there is another murder, also linked to the group of lawyers. And is there a link to a tragedy years ago?

As a result of what happened before they left Dumfries a year or more earlier, Frank is a mess. He's drinking too much, not taking care of himself and worse. Most devastatingly, he feels distant from God. He has to face some demons as he returns to Dumfries and learns something that throws him completely off balance.

All the characters are fully fleshed out. Mhairi is really growing into herself. For me, she's the stand out character (other than Frank). Not as tough as she makes out, she's all heart. Frank's issues are dealt with density and there's real emotional depth to these characters - Frank and Mhairi particularly, but the others too.

The storyline is unsettling and tragic. The pace builds as the case gathers momentum, and things are pretty tense throughout with plenty of shocks along the way. Long hidden secrets are unearthed and reputations ruined. But the very end made my heart do a little happy dance.

I realise I've probably talked as much, possibly more, about the characters as about the central storyline. It's not that it's weak, the opposite in fact - I loved it. But for me, a good story is nothing without strong characters, good and bad, that I care about. And I was invested in this lot, big time.

I've enjoyed this series immensely and hope there will be more. I think this one just about edges it as my favourite because I love what Baldwin has done with Frank here. She could have played safe with him, but she didn't. She messed with his head. And it worked. She brought him to life for me. Skillful writing.

The third book in the DI Frank Farrell series by Jackie Baldwin. This is my first book by Baldwin and most certainly won't be the last. She has got a great talent for crime thriller writing, but I'm guessing you don't need me to tell you that.

As I said this is my first book of Baldwin's, therefore, I haven't read the previous two books in this series. I know I've missed out on some thrilling cases though, given the fact that one of Farrell's team member is in a coma, and Farrell has left the priesthood! But, what is good is that I have no clue what on earth happened giving me the opportunity to buy both books and find out. What I'm trying to say simply is that Avenge The Dead can be read as a standalone.

In Avenge The Dead, Farrell and McLeod along with Thompson are assigned a case in Glasgow. This has some emotional effects on the team as this is the scene of whatever happened to land their team member in a coma. And, because of what happened Farrell is turning to drink to come to terms with things. Farrell's emotional decline only cements the relationship between him and McLeod. McLeod covers for Farrell on a number of occasions, knowing what he is going through. But, with McLeod by his side we know that Farrell is in safe hands and that they will get through the case.

The case involves the murder of a woman who seems to have a lot of suspects that could have killed her off. It's only when another victim turns up dead, that McLeod and Farrell deduce that maybe there is a deeper secret lurking.

Avenge The Dead is full of secrets and mystery waiting to be uncovered. You won't want to put the book down until the truth is out.

*I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book from the tour organiser.

It felt so great to be back with Farrell and McLeod even if it was under such dark and chilling circumstances, and I can safely say that AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is my favourite book so far in this series (but I definitely recommend that you read all three).

When a wealthy solicitor's wife is found brutally murdered in her own home, it pulls DI Frank Farrell and DS McLeod back to the small community of Dumfries which still holds a lot of harrowing memories for them both, especially Farrell. But this case definitely seems to have them stumped and when another body turns up in connection to another solicitor, Farrell and McLeod will do whatever it takes to get to the truth.
As they dig deeper into this close group of friends, a shared bond over the past may be coming back to haunt them. But who will be targeted next?
Throw in blackmail, drugs, a secret society, and some truly sick individuals, and this police procedural will blow your mind.

AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is the third book in this series and is simply superb from start to finish. I have always loved the way that Farrell and McLeod work together and their relationship with each other, and this hasn't changed. Frank is struggling with what happened in the past, his loss of faith, and his growing awareness of his partner, and I desperately want him to feel content with his life again. And DS McLeod is my hero - strong, feisty, caring, and intelligent.

AVENGE THE DEAD by Jackie Baldwin is fresh with excellent characters, and as always, left me looking forward to the next book in this series. Jackie Baldwin is a crime fiction force to be reckoned with.

I love this series! DI Frank Farrell is a fabulously complex character with an intriguing background and I’ve really enjoyed watching his personal development through these three books. After the last book where an investigation led to personal tragedy, Frank and Mhairi are back to investigate the death of the wife of a defence solicitor. But when more murders follow, they realise that the deaths may be connected to a fire 10 years ago in which a young woman tragically burnt to death.

This was a full on read for me that grabbed me from the very first page. The case itself is full of red herrings and every time I thought I’d worked out who was responsible and why, another spanner was thrown into the works to prove me wrong! The writing is engaging and Jackie Baldwin really brings DI Farrell to life through her expertly plotted narrative. I have a real soft spot for this detective and love watching his personal internal battle between his old life as a priest and his new one on the police force. His working relationships compliment his personal struggle by giving him plenty to think about and I especially love the interaction between him and DS McLeod. This is teamwork at its very best and their friendship felt authentic and relatable. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes (if anywhere!) from here!

Avenge The Dead is a must read for fans of Scottish crime fiction so do treat yourself to this cleverly crafted thriller. And although it can be read as a stand-alone, make sure you do read the other books in the series too to get the full DI Farrell backstory as it’s a good ‘un!

Highly recommended by me!

DS Mhairi McLeod and DI Frank Farrell are called to assist in the investigation in a neighboring city of Dumfries. The wife of a solicitor has been murdered. The husband has an alibi, but it seems pretty weak.

However, Frank is still being eaten alive over the very serious wounding of a fellow officer a year earlier. He has become somewhat unreliable with Mhairi covering for him. Dumfries is where Frank and Mhairi are from and he is very reluctant to go back there.

Almost immediately they learn that the wife had a lover, another solicitor. Did the husband know? He says not. The poker players he was supposedly with the night his wife was killed were having a reunion of sorts for another solicitor who was murdered in a house fire some ten years earlier.

Another murder is committed. This time it is the almost adopted son of another of the small circle of solicitors. Is someone out for revenge against these guys? Is it a mere coincidence? Then another! The press is going crazy – as are the police. Frank doesn't know how long he can keep up this pace. They have a possible suspect for the second killing, but they couldn't have done them all, could they?

Suddenly the team is innundated with informantion and clues.

This is a well written and enjoyable novel. I didn't like the way Frank had descended into a drunken stupor much of the time. I thought it was unbecoming of him. He was so irritable and unforgiving which I also found unsettling. This is perhaps my least favorite Jackie Baldwin book. The ending seemed a little forced as thought the author wasn't quite sure how to wrap it up. The interesting writing and the relationships between the other cops saved the book for me. It was interesting to see Frank and Mhairi trek back to Dumfries.

I want to thank NetGalley and HarperCollins UK/One More Chapter for forwarding to me a copy of this interesting book for me to read, enjoy and review.

A Scottish police procedural, Avenge the Dead follows DI Frank Farrell and DS Mhairi McLeod as they are sent from Glasgow to Dumfries to investigate a shocking murder of a solicitor’s wife. Discovering the deceased had been cheating on her husband, they wonder if the case will be open and shut. When the body count starts mounting, though, Farrell and McLeod quickly realise this is no ordinary murder case… and they need to act quickly to find the killer before another innocent dies.

This is the third in the DI Frank Farrell series and the first one I’ve read, and there were obviously some significant events in previous books I’d missed which had ongoing consequences here; mainly for Frank’s mental health but also on other characters. And talking of characters, there’s a BIG cast to keep track of, too big for many of them to really get much character development. I didn’t figure out who the killer was until pretty late in the game, and that was mainly due to the suspect pool being absolutely vast.

The twist, and the killer’s motives, were actually quite interesting, and also plausible. Is justice done, in the end? Let’s just say I had a certain amount of sympathy for the killer… although his choice of victims meant I was glad the police solved the mystery.

There are a lot of things to like about this story, but the over-large cast made things a bit too confusing for me to really enjoy it. I’ll give it four stars.

#3 in the DI Frank Farrell series but can be read as a stand-alone.

When the wife of a defence solicitor is found murdered, DI Farrell, DS Mhairi McLeod and DC Thomson begin their investigation.

A second murder, this time the son of a different defence solicitor, things get even more complicated. Especially as there appear to be links to a case from 10 years ago.

While DI Farrell is struggling with guilt, he’s taken to drinking far too much which makes him pretty useless at times and Mhairi ends up pretty much taking over the case, while supporting him. Can they all work together to solve this murder mystery before anyone else dies?

This is a twisty police procedural with great, albeit flawed, characters, secrets and plenty of surprises to keep you gripped from start to finish. Thoroughly entertaining.

4 Stars from me

It was great to catch up with DI Frank Farrell again - I last encountered him in Dead Man's Prayer.

DI Farrell pushes the boundaries of 'messed up cop' to the absolute limit but I found that made me root for him all the more.

He is a complex but doggedly driven character who just never seems to give him (except on himself) and that drive and determination means that he pursues the culprit to the bitter end - no matter what.

Avenge The Dead has a clever and multi-layered storyline and Jackie Baldwin's knowledge of the area and the legal profession really give this book an edge of credibility.

My thanks to @JackieMBaldwin1 and #damppebblesblogtours for letting me be a part of this stonking book tour! I feel honoured to be in such great company.

This is the third book in the series. The main character, DI Frank Farrell, along with some others on his team have to travel from where they usually work in Dumfries to Glasgow to invesitgate the murder of the wife of a prominent defense solicitor. DI Farrell seems to be struggling with some emotions and this leads to some self medicating. Another great book in the series that begs to be read in one sitting. I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book via The Book Reviewers Club on Facebook.

This is the 3rd book in the series starring Frank Farrell and the story jumps forward 2 years.

Frank has moved to Glasgow and is trying very hard to forget all his past cases from Dumfries, but he is called back, along with DS McLeod, and it seems like the old team is back together. However, a lot has changed for all of them in the intervening years and this fact, plus some nasty murders turning up on his patch, makes for challenging times for Farrell. What connects all these murders? Or are they connected at all? Lots of threads to unravel.

I enjoyed this book, and it was not as graphic as some of the others. A good, solid, police procedural. Looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

4.5 stars from me.

A brilliant read. I love Frank and Mhairi. I had no idea who the killer was. I only had an inkling just over half way. Looking forward to the next book. 5*.

'Avenge The Dead' is the third book in the series featuring Detective Inspector Frank Farrell. I have been a fan of the series since I had the good fortune to pick up the first book in the series called 'Dead Man's Prayer'. When I discovered that Jackie was due to release the third book in the series, I just knew that I had to grab a copy as soon as possible. When I managed to get hold of a copy, I grabbed a cup of tea and settled down ready to read. Oh boy, 'Avenge The Dead' is another fantastic addition to the Detective Inspector Frank Farrell series. I thoroughly enjoyed reading 'Avenge The Dead' but more about that in a bit.
What can I say about Detective Inspector Frank Farrell? He is a different sort of lead character to a lot of detectives in crime fiction. Farrell was originally a Roman Catholic priest but for one reason and another he left the priesthood and became a police officer. Although he is no longer in the priesthood, he still seems to have a strong sense of faith and he carries around an awful amount of guilt with him. Farrell is a bit of a tortured soul in this book because he blames himself for the fact that his colleague was badly injured and is currently in hospital and unlikely to recover that well. Nobody could blame Farrell more than he blames himself. Farrell has turned to alcohol as his coping mechanism. When he drinks, he manages to block out his guilt and he temporarily forgets about his mental anguish. Farrell has been letting things slide on the work front too and Mhairi has covered for him on several occasions but even his loyal work partner is losing patience with him. Farrell is shocked back into action when he is allocated a case which sees him returning to his former stomping ground with Mhairi. Will Frank and Mhairi solve the case and apprehend the perpetrator? Well for the answer to that question you are just going to have to read the book for yourself to find out as I am not going to tell you.
Oh my goodness me, 'Avenge The Dead' was a corker of a book and although it's early in 2020, I have to say that it is already up there on my list of top favourite reads for 2020. To say that reading 'Avenge The Dead' was seriously addictive has to be one of the understatements of the year. I made the fatal mistake of beginning to read this book shortly before I went to bed. Well what a mistake to make. Let's just say that bedtime was delayed for a few hours and I was extremely tired the following morning. I went to sleep thinking about the book and when I woke up the following morning, all I could think about was picking the book up again. Despite my best efforts to slow down how quickly I was getting through the book, I just couldn't put the book down and I certainly couldn't stop reading. For me, 'Avenge The Dead' is the perfect definition of an unputdownable pageturner. I was gripped by the story and on the edge of my seat throughout.
'Avenge The Dead' is superbly written but then I think that to be true of all of Jackie's books. Jackie has one of those writing styles that is easy to get used to and easy to get along with. She grabs your attention from the start and draws you into the story. In Frank Farrell, Jackie has created a complex and intriguing character and I liked Farrell enormously. Jackie writes using such vivid and realistic descriptions that I felt as though I was part of the story myself and that I was a member of Farrell's team. I even found that I was starting to interact with the book in the sense that I tried to 'talk' to the characters as if they could hear me. Before anybody says anything, yes I know that this book is fictional and not real but I find that if I enjoy a book to the extent that I enjoyed this one then I tend to 'live' the story as if it were real.
In short, I thoroughly enjoyed, no make that adored, reading 'Avenge The Dead'. I strongly recommend that you pick this book up and discover the Detective Inspector Frank Farrell series for yourself. I will definitely be reading more of Jackie's work in the future. The score on the Ginger Book Geek board has to be 5* out of 5*.

Avenge The Dead is the third in the DI Frank Farrell and DS Mhairi McLeod series a Scottish Police Procedural and for me it's a series that I'd love to read more of in the future. While I'm a great believer in reading a series from the beginning I would say the same with this but to be truthful it can be read as a standalone but don't deprive yourself of the pleasure gained from starting at the beginning. I always enjoy novels written about areas and places that I know and this is one of those, I just wish I could have stopped myself from adding 'Road.' whenever I read Byres name, Byres Road is literally down the road from me.
Parts of this book were almost too painful to read, honestly my heart bled for DI Farrell at times, he's a bit of a rough diamond with a heart of gold. Farrell's more than a little lost at this point in his life, he's distanced himself from his family, friends and religion. Seeing him down and almost out, relying on alcohol (hard to read as my sister died from alcoholism) which made him a bit of a 'bawbag' as well as a little unreliable. I just want him to ease up on the blame game and give himself some TLC he really deserves/needs it.
This is a book where the author hasn't been afraid to delve into some of the more delicate subject matters, bullying, blackmail and murder (obviously) to touch on a couple. It's clear that the author has researched her topics well. She did have a wee head start with regards to the lawyers and solicitors working ways as that was her previous profession, I'm so pleased she became an author.
Frank and Mhairi who moved to Glasgow are sent back to Dumfries a year after losing a trusted friend with another left in hospital to solve the murder of a solicitor. They aren't there for long before there's another murder, this time it’s a teenage boy and it doesn't stop there. There's a plethora of suspects for them to choose from nearly all of them are from the legal profession, each and every one of them lie and keep secrets
It's a well written novel with short sharp snappy chapters which is always good, except that the book is finished too quickly as it's easy, too easy to sneak in 'just one more chapter'. It's chock full of characters some likeable, some not and some just downright creepy, naming no names you'll soon learn who I mean. I don't usually do too bad at guessing who the perpetrators are, but it was almost at the end before I tippled this time and I liked that a lot.
I have no problem recommending this to all my #BookwormFriends and family but I would say start at the beginning with Dead Man’s Prayer.

This was another riveting foray into the world of DI Frank Farrell! From the first chapter, I could not put this novel down, staying up late to finish just to see what would come next.

Not only are these characters are complex, but the world around them so multi-dimensional that it is easy to get lost within the pages, trying to piece together the clues as they come. It is easy to see how much time and effort the author put into researching and putting together each layer to bring the reader a gripping novel with twists and turns that are surprising, to say the least.

Speaking to the characters, I enjoyed watching Frank and Mhairi as their friendship grew stronger - and I feel like Frank, in particular, had a strong arc throughout this entire story. Still reeling from the severe injuries and hospitalization of his friend Lind, when we first are reunited with the DI, he is lost more often than not in the depths of a bottle, forgetting important things and putting a strain on his friendship with Mhairi as she is forced to cover for him time and again. As someone who has struggled with their faith, I can easily relate to Frank and the anger he harbors. on that front.

I was a little concerned about how things would play out once they were forced to return to their old stomping grounds, but thankfully the author managed to walk that delicate line between focusing on the case and the key players there, as well as what was going on back at the station between Frank, Mhairi, and their former co-workers (some of whom have secrets of their own). As the murders started piling up, I found myself trying to not only figure out the clues as they were introduced, but paying careful attention to the suspects and interviews, trying to piece together who was behind everything - only to be shocked right along with everyone else when all was finally revealed.

I strongly believe this is a solid police/thriller/whodunit novel that will appeal to fans of all those genres. I would read more from this author.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

I received a free eARC of Avenge the Dead but that has in no way influenced my review.

Following the traumatic events of book two, Perfect Dead, DI Farrell and DS McLeod (along with DC Thomson) have relocated to Glasgow. Farrell is a mess, with a capital M. Having lost his faith (he’s an ex-priest so that’s kinda major!) and keeping a constant vigil at the bedside of his friend and DCI, John Lind, he turns to alcohol and prescription drugs to get through the day. When a violent murder calls the team back to Dumfries, Farrell is loathed to go. Not only because of the memories but because he doesn’t want to leave Lind’s side. Begrudgingly the team pack up and head back to their own stomping ground to try and solve one of the most frustrating cases they’ve ever had to deal with. Struggling to come up with any suspects or motives for the murder, they’re shocked when a second body is found. The victims are both relatives of a group of defence solicitors, a tight-knit group of friends who go way back. Can Farrell and McLeod discover who the killer is before another life is snuffed out…?

I’ve mentioned it before but it’s worth mentioning it again, I LOVE this series. I was so excited to hear a third book was being released. Avenge the Dead can easily be read as a standalone but if you want the full impact of these brilliant books then it’s worth going back to the beginning and starting from book one. I love the way the characters have really grown into themselves over the three books; particularly the wonderful Mhairi McLeod who is always as important to the story as DI Farrell. The way these two characters bounce off each other, their undeniable chemistry, brings a lighter note to an intense and involving case and I can’t get enough of them. In Avenge the Dead, in particular, McLeod often steps up to the plate in Frank’s absence and I thoroughly enjoyed seeing her take more of a leading role. Frank, on the other hand, is on a slippery slope having lost his faith and turned to drink and drugs to cope with the events of the last couple of years. He’s lost his way and although I’m normally the first person to cheer when a troubled detective makes an appearance, I feel really sorry for Frank. The departure of his faith has left such a large, gaping hole in his life that he’s just not the man he was. It was fascinating to see this side of him. To see Frank Farrell so dejected and lost was tough. So much so that I hope he finds what is missing in future books in the series.

Would I recommend this book? Yes, yes and yes again. Without a moment’s hesitation, I would. I would recommend the entire series as they’re all great books and if you love detective fiction then Baldwin’s DI Farrell series is a must-read. From the very first page I was hooked, and my curiosity was well and truly piqued! I was there with the team as another possible link crumbled to nothing resulting in another dead-end. I was there with the team at the thrilling conclusion, holding my breath, shaking my head and muttering ‘nooooooooo’ under my breath. I loved this book and I lived this book. I cannot wait for book four in the series. Here’s hoping there are many, many more DI Farrell novels to come in the not too distant future.

I chose to read and review an eARC of Avenge the Dead. The above review is my own unbiased opinion.

This is a fine, well written and engrossing story that has a number of threads.

We have a murder which brings DI Frank Farrell, DS McLeod and DC Thomas back to Dumfries. They don’t really want to be there after the last time. Still orders are orders and an MIT unit has been requested.

The officers in Dumfries, unlike Frank, seem to have moved on with their lives whilst he is still hurting. With his colleague DI Lind still in a coma Franks faith has taken a battering. Will he be able to come to terms with all that is happening, can he straighten himself out before it’s too late?

Will DS McLeod keep faith with Frank, can she keep making excuses for him and at what cost?

Then there’s another murder are they connected? Has an old murder anything to do with what’s happening? Are the defence solicitors being targeted or is there more than one killer on the loose? Can the police stop the killer/killers before something else happens?

We follow Farrell and McLeod along with the rest of the team as they put the pieces together and work out what has happened as the story builds to a cracking finale.

With a complex storyline and credible characters this is a story well worth reading.

It’s is easy to read as a standalone. My only regret is not having read the previous two books – yet! I believe, by this time, we would appreciate the main characters much more. Still catching up with them will be a breeze and there’ll be two more investigations to enjoy.

This book is one that will have you looking out for the next in the series and the series will become a favourite.

Great mix of investigation and personal drama for Farrell & McLeod👍👍

4-4.5🌟stars
🚔 What a good murder mystery, with an old, gruesome death suspected of connecting to a new spate of fatal attacks seemingly centered on a small group of local barristers. The setting in Scotland, one of my favorite places, first drew me to the story but the excellent writing, character development and plot kept me.

This was my first time reading a Jackie Baldwin mystery and, though a good deal of the police detectives' personal drama stems from events that occurred prior to this story, I was curious about learning the background but had no trouble understanding the continuing thread. This book slowly reveals some of the details but I guess I'll have to go back and read the prior books in the series to get the full scoop on Lind's injuries, Moore's traumatic disappointment, and Farrell's romantic disappointments and reasons for leaving the priesthood. DI Frank Farrell with his drinking, Droopy Dog attitude and suicidal thoughts was a hard character to love, but his colleague Mhairi McLeod was so loyal and embroiled in his issues. Strong, opinionated DS McLeod I really liked.

🤔 I would have rated it higher but I felt the murderer was too easily identified (by me at least; it took the detectives several hundred pages longer than me to figure it out and then come up with the evidence). Still, the journey there was exciting, with some great action sequences (including a brawl at the courts!), and there was a real surprise at the end. 😊

Thanks to publishers Harper Collins, One More Chapter and NetGalley for providing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
