About the author

Mark Fisher (1968 – 2017) was a co-founder of Zero Books and Repeater Books. His blog, k-punk, defined critical writing for a generation. He wrote three books, Capitalist Realism, Ghosts of My Life and The Weird and the Eerie, and was a Visiting Fellow in the Visual Cultures department at Goldsmiths, University of London.

I encountered the term Acid Communism a few times in the past, but I never paid it much attention. For whatever reason, I was intrigued this time around. The late Mark Fisher coined the term, and it was to be the title of his latest book. Sadly, he passed away before finishing it and all he left us with is an Introduction. An unfinished project, Acid Communism is open to interpretation - a fact which, I think, considering the nature of the term, is wholly appropriate. The meaning of Acid Communism is anything but fixed. Mark Fisher writes of the 60s' counterculture, remembers the collective dream of a new reality. He rescues the truly revolutionary currents from a movement which is now often dismissed as liberal hippie culture. What we have lost since then is the collective capacity to imagine an alternative world. Acid Communism is a project. It is the continuous and collective search for an alternative reality. One outside the bleak political hegemony that is capitalist realism.

Inspiring to think what this beginning might have become...

These last writings seem to be attempting Walter Benjamin's redemption of the past.
And it is hard not to look at the recent wave of resignations and "quiet quitting" as some form of what Fisher was describing.

This book was so good, although a bit too short. Could've used way more of this stuff. Thank you so much for the voluntaries for the Finnish translation.
I have been all for this forever, but now I have a name for it: Acid Communism.
All of this makes sense when you think about it. But people don't think, they act, poorly.
As Jenny Holzer said: Turn soft and lovely any time you have a chance.

Fascinating introduction to what could have been Fisher's magnum opus. The history is fascinating, the philosophy is intriguing, and the whole work yearns for a world that could have been. Unfortunately, the reader is left yearning for another world as well, a world where Fisher was still alive to finish this piece and present a new vision of socialism to the workers of the world. We can only wish, and in its place, carry on the work that Fisher started, bring acid communism to its fruition.

Fisher’s ultimate mistake is here totally ignoring the revolutions of the so-called Global South; this leaves a gaping hole in his analysis that he tries to fill with the music of The Temptations for some reason. There’s nothing material here for the reader to cling onto in the struggle for a new world. If he ever finished it, this would probably be the worst thing Fisher ever wrote

What could’ve been a Bible for the next generation of how movements gain momentum and how they lose it. Fisher, always through a lens of pop cultural critique exams how the vibes were different in a certain momentum without a fetishistic nostalgia, but with a true examination of factors that were leading to and creating energy for an actual revolution.

Alas, neoliberalism filled the gaps, and I really wish we could read his analysis of the 70s in more detail, how that energy was lost and extreme conservatism rose to power, destroying nearly all gains of the communist movement.

Fisher, seemingly at his most positive in the writing, sparks confidence that we can get there again, adding he feels that every building even greater—and while many have forgotten about class consciousness and the elite have captured almost all other identities and exploit their politics, class seems like the most unifying in his analysis.

If the revolution happened then, we would be fighting different battles of equality everyday as we are now, but with new examinations of madness, incarceration, disability, racism, fatness, health, transphobia and so on to truly fight for an equitable society maybe we will use the term “acid communism” and maybe we won’t, but it doesn’t point to Fisher simple idea of “making communism cool again” because even now neolibs and neocons in congress find new ways to “decry socialism”

the concept of acid communism is so provocative and enlightening that i grasp-such good nitty-gritty source for thinking about the future and how it might look like moving forward.

kinda like myth of sisyphus for people who think about it in political terms. no not actually but this was really good i'm going down the mark fisher rabbit hole so probably be careful in case i go dark on social media in a few months (if we've dated you should probably get on the next flight out of here)
