Della Hughes longs for adventure and for freedom from the strictness and austerity of 1870s Boston society. When her uncle and guardian, General Clint Logan, uses his fortune to purchase property in Colorado and set up a horse ranch selling remounts to the western army, Della decides she must accompany him and his family to the West. Along the journey, Della encounters more adventure than she bargained for. Rustlers, Indians, and rattlesnakes add danger to the trek. A persistent cavalry captain who believes Della would make him the perfect wife and a Cheyenne chieftain’s son who tells her she’s brought sunshine to his heart complicate her life. And the handsome army scout who ramrods their wagon train guards a secret from his past that makes him believe he’s not worthy of loving Della. She must meet the challenges of the West and convince the man of her heart that love is worth risking everything to gain.
What a fabulous introduction to this new author. It’s around 1870 and wagon trains are still heading west to find those wide open spaces. Della Hughes is traveling with her Uncle Clint, Aunt Coral and little cousin Flossie. They are trailing 65 prime Morgan horses to Colorado where they will open a ranch, breed and train horses for the army.
What an experience it turns out to be. Besides learning to ride astride, Della must learn to care for all her needs without a maid. Sparks begin to fly when two totally different men try to court her. The adventure heats up with a prairie thunderstorm, fire and kidnapping. Will her true love find her before it is too late?
I received a digital copy through Anaiah Press. The impressions and comments are my own and were in no way solicited.
Twenty-year-old Della Hughes was brought up to live a comfortable life in the luxury offered by Boston society. Despite being an orphan, her uncle, retired General Clint Logan, has ensured she grew up loved and well cared for. But even her beloved uncle has not been able to tame the strong will that resides in Della’s wild heart...
This book was a throwback to the romances I read growing up--Wild West, strong heroes, and lots of danger.
I will say that this book is better-researched than most. I loved learning some details about the Lakota Sioux that I didn't know--and I have studied them a little more than the average person.
However, I will say I struggled with the front half of the book because I don't really buy into the idea of instant love--attraction, yes. Infatuation, yes, but deep, long-lasting love, no. I believe we actually need to know a person. Further, the person has to actually have some characteristics beyond beauty.
As the book progressed, the heroine especially developed, but the love had already been declared. Still, I enjoyed the book and recommend a trip down memory lane.
This was a great book!!! Loved Shane and Della's story! The faith they both shared; his decision to never marry; her stubbornness not to let him get away. I enjoyed reading how they overcame the obstacles to their HEA, and the strengthening of her faith along the way.
I received a complimentary copy of this book, was not required to leave a review, and the opinion expressed is my own.

I'm enjoying this series, although this one had quite a few situations that I found difficult to believe would have really happened the way portrayed. But still, the romance is sweet and the characters are lovely, so I will keep reading these :)
