A desire for status has brought Ondry and Liam to a human world to trade, but dealing with humans has brought up all the old pain in Liam’s heart. Even though Ondry would do anything to protect his beloved palteia, he doesn’t know how to protect Liam from himself. Worse, Ondry isn’t sure how to shield Liam from the shifting politics on the Rownt ship where the Calti Grandmothers are nothing like the ones they left behind on the planet.

With everything in their lives changing, Ondry and Liam have only each other. If Ondry can’t find a way to defend Liam from the ghosts of the past and overcome the impossibly short life span of a human, their small family might be over long before either of them is ready to let go. Ondry has always been a dominant and possessive Rownt, and with Liam in danger, those traits are necessary as he challenges the world to protect his lover.

Lyn Gala

Lynsey "Lyn" Gala started writing in the back of her science notebook in third grade and hasn’t stopped since. Westerns starring men with shady pasts gave way to science fiction with questionable protagonists which eventually gave in to any story with a morally ambiguous character. Even the purest heroes have pain and loss and darkness in their hearts, and that’s where she likes to find her stories. Her characters seek to better themselves and find the happy ending (or happier anyway), but it’s writing the struggle that inspires her muse. When she isn’t writing, Lyn Gala teaches in New Mexico.

She first cut her teeth on fanfic: gen, slash, het, and femslash. She prefers to focus on plot: mysteries and monsters and disasters, oh my, but sex can and does happen. Some of her stories focus on power exchange, bondage or bdsm. In her worlds, tops and bottoms are all mature, consenting adults. In fact, stories where they aren't squick her badly, so don't expect to find abuse stories in her journal.

Because. I still can't envision Ondry!

The dark-haired guy on the covers makes a gorgeous Liam. The Ondry on the covers has a very human-like, muscular male torso in a purplish color and a tale, yet in this book the Rownt are described as being turtle like.

But regardless of the mystery that is Ondry's appearance, he and Liam are solid. This is very much an established couple story.

"You are so beautifully mine," Ondry whispered. "... I know of no joy that equals this."

Liam and Ondry are living on the Rownt ship in space and looking to establish trade with other species.

The Grandmothers on the ship are harder to read than the Grandmothers on Janatjanay; the eldest one is at once distant and cheeky (I'm sure Liam would have a go at me for using such vague terms, but it's what I got).

When the ship lands to meet and trade with humans, misunderstandings ensue. Liam runs into Framkie, one of his old friends from the human military base, who tries to persuade Liam to leave Ondry. Liam is wracked with insecurity and doubt, but he trusts Ondry, ONLY Ondry, especially Ondry.

"And then once in a while a palteia comes along, and that's the one person they're ever allowed to love ... A palteia is the only being a Rownt can ever love unconditionally and keep forever."

This book is sexier than the two previous books. Ondry's tale is put to (VERY) good use (every morning!), and there's ! (I don't consider that a spoiler, more of an incentive.) And it's Ondry who initiates it, and who receives as much pleasure from it as Liam does. SENSUAL. Beautiful.

This book is approximately 2,600 locations, but it reads like a denser, longer novel. That's not a bad thing, although I can't imagine extended dialogues about human psychology and lexical and conceptual semantics are everyone's cuppa.

I'm very much a geek about WORDS and linguistics, so I LOVED it, but this is definitely a slower-paced, methodical story.

The observations the Rownt make about humans are brilliant.

"I was proud of every good trade you made. How could I not feel pride when I had taught you to steal?"

Lyn Gala must be an especially insightful and observant human, because the discussions about human vs. Rownt "psychopaths," how we treat the injured and weak (does being injured make one weak?), and the treatment of children and palteia (is the mark of a culture how we treat those who are most vulnerable?) really made me think.

Does this book conclude the series? I'm not sure. I hope not, because I desperately want Ondry to trade with the Imshee for genetic information.

But Liam and Ondry have their HEA. They always did.

"I will defy the gods on the matter."

"You don't believe in the gods."

"Then they will be easy to defy," Ondry said.

100% this:

It's difficult for me to write this because I've never written a proper review of this series. But I think it's about time to say that my heart is a victim of acute inflammation every time I read something about this couple. Why is that?

1. HEAT
They are not sexually compatible. Ondry considers it unproductive procreation. But. It. Is. So. HOT! There are not many scenes but the few we get to see are more than enough to rise the temperature several degrees. But it's not to kill some bugs, it's just action-reaction. Impossible not to be affected by the closeness of this two in their nest.

"You worry we are not compatible, but I know of no joy that equals this."

2. REDNESS
Ondry's innocence. What are those human doing? Erggg, they are kissing. Why not try that? OH YEAH! There is a KISS. Finally, I must admit I wanted this moment more than anything in the series. And there is not only one but lots more! Apparently Ondry likes kissing, too. Ondry has found human fora. Stupid face plastered on my face.

"What are they doing?" Ondry asked as he watched a pair of humans press their faces together oddly.

"Um... kissing." (...) "Two individuals press their lips together. Humans have a lot of nerve endings in their lips, so that's sensitive skin." (...) "It's a ritual to show affection."

"Is this a ritual I should use with you to show my fondness?", Ondry asked.

3. SWELLING
My heart boomed constantly. The heart-warming tenderness, the complete devotion, the unconditional dedication. These two gave me shivers with every touch and interaction. They are made for each other and this sounds lame but in this book you can almost touch it. Their full understanding is not achieved yet because of cultural and social obstacles, but the gap is becoming increasingly more insignificant. The differences make their days interesting, as there is always something to talk about: grammar, Rownt status, human politics, psychology... It all gives depth and credence to the story. There is not a wasted moment, every second is precious.

Maybe Ondry had been a terror when he was forty, but he was pretty perfect now.

4. PAIN
Human life span is so short. I wonder if they will be able to modify Liam's genetics somehow. Because I can't stand the thought of them apart. I don't think Ondry will have the will to go on. In this book they talk about how some Rownt decide to let themselves die. And I'm not naive nor blind to see that would be the reasonable outcome for him. So I hope and pray and dance for the gods that things won't come down to this. Ondry says adamantly that he will not lose Liam. And I believe him because the alternative is unbearable.

Also, Liam's pain causes Ondry pain, and he doesn't know what to do to erase it. Non-physical dangers drive Ondry to despair because there is no way to protect Liam from himself and his past and his feelings. This is so touching I wanted to hug him forever (not that he would ever let me).

"I will not lose you. The story scrolls say only a palteia can defy the laws of the gods with impunity, for even the gods would hesitate to stand between a palteia and his chosen chilta. They fail to say the same is true of a chilta. I will defy the gods on this matter."

5. LOSS OF FUNCTION
Here is when I die from an overdose of satisfaction. How is it possible to keep me on the edge of the seat from beginning to end? Well, I was so much time on that edge I fell to the well and never got to touch the bottom. These two make me fall hard. These two honestly short-circuited my neurons and left them useless. Because now I can only think about them and real life be damned. Ilsil on me. Better before going to sleep. Never if you have a life. Because the consequences are disastrous: I'm jumping on clouds ever since.

"And after a while of having someone put me at the center of his universe, I pretty much feel the same about him."

The sentiment is mutual.

“To excel and to know how to show it is to excel twice.”

her: liam and ondry 3 was good.

him: i read both sequels back to back and they made me crazy. an endless series of conversations and next to nothing happens, anywhere. together the books were like 500 pages of people explaining things to one another—but i bet all anyone will remember is the tail sex.

her: ah. well. not all, but—

him [oblivious]: sometimes the text would explain something about ondry in liam POV, and then ondry would do something in that vein in the next scene to illustrate it, which just happened to be in front of a grandmother, and then ondry would explain it to the grandmother in relation to liam, and the grandmother would turn to liam and demand he explain it to her in relation to humans, and he would, and then they would all exchange curious looks and swan away to their respective quarters and then ondry and liam would explain it all over again to one another in their nest and then have tailsex and then someone would crack an obscure grammar joke.

I feel like LG just performed the ilsil on me.

I don't know how she combines making me feel so relaxed and affected simultaneously, but I'll just accept it as the gift it is. You know how you read some series that focus on a couple and as it progresses it gets stale?

Nothing could be further from the truth where Liam and Ondry are concerned. Their story just keeps evolving and drawing me in over and over.

I spent the entire day with either a smile on my face or fighting off my feels at the simple truths Ondry or the grandmothers uttered. As Liam struggles with his past and second guesses himself I found myself becoming increasingly verklempt over Ondry's desire to fix it because that's what a chilta does for his palteia. As much as Rownt pride themselves on their logic I continue to be filled delighted over Ondry's illogic when it comes to his palteia.

"I will not lose you. The story scrolls say only a palteia can defy the laws of the gods with impunity, for even the gods would hesitate to stand between a palteia and his chosen chilta. They fail to say the same is true of a chilta. I will defy the gods on this matter."

The fact that palteia are cherished by the Rownt and that's on display from even the eldest of the grandmother's only enriched my experience. I do hope Zach's story gets told. *doe eyes*

The world building was just a cherry on top of the best sundae I could ever ask for.

If you've not read this series you're really, truly doing yourself a disservice.

Ondry and Liam-- never enough.

Well, this had a lot of the human v. rownt interaction and cultural misunderstandings as the Grandmothers negotiate with humans. Misconceptions and sheer bafflement ensue. It is another interesting addition to their evolving lives, but action packed it is not. So, if you want drama then this is really not going to suit.

This is a quiet and methodical look at the sociological differences between the species and how Ondry and Liam's relationship grows in their new home on the spaceship. I liked it a lot, but then I have a terrible fondness for the two. Any conflicts that might have occurred got nipped in the bud, as the Grandmothers pondered deeply before acting.

Reread- April 2020 listened to the audiobook for the first time. Definitely enjoying John Solo as Ondry now!

October 2017 - such lovliness!!!! I desperately need the fourth book!!!!

Review

How wonderful was that?!?!

I'm just so happy right now! This was more slow paced than the others, as in there was no heart thumping drama or situations these two had to navigate, it was just Liam understanding his place with humans and the Rownt and Ondry being protective and lovely, he was not always the biggest fan of the humans...

Ondry wondered if any of the officers or Grandmothers would care if he broke one human.

He's makes me big goofy smile!

We saw more into the human worlds and that included some of Lima's old solider buddies, we also had much more time with the Grandmothers, which was rather exciting.

Obviously it was still super hot (tail sex hello?!?!) but sooooo tender, I melted a few times throughout reading this book!!

Liam felt the tentative flicker of Ondry’s tongue against Liam’s lip. A little frisson traveled up Liam’s spine, and while he was still lost in that feeling, Ondry slipped his slick tail inside Liam. Ondry had covert lube maneuvers down to an art.

Favourite quote is probably this one, because I love Liam and I love him loving Ondry (see so much love for this series).

“Ondry is always dominant. When I get hurt , he comes raging in. When he can’t fix things, he gets aggravated. And after a while of having someone put me at the center of his universe, I pretty much feel the same about him. I would give him anything. I mean, anything.” Liam emphasized the last word.

The ending is definitely open to conintuation, no cliff hanger, but please please PLEASE continue this story!!

Oh .. what a delightful and fantastic read. I never want Ondry and Liam’s adventure to end. Lyn Gala could publish a hundred books in this series and I’m sure I’ll read them all. I love it!!! 😍❤️😘

So we start from where we were left off from book 2. Ondry was named tuk-ranked by oldest grandmother in Deidell and now he and Liam are on a spaceship traveling to earth to do trades with humans. The situation is a mess since the grandmothers on the ship neither acknowledge nor deny Ondry’s tuk status. While Ondry is struggling to be acknowledged him as tuk and fighting for his pride and for the opportunity to do trade with Imshee so that he can extend Liam’s lifespan, Liam is also struggling with nightmares and inner turmoils and hesitating to meet human beings again. However as the approach to earth is becoming nearer and nearer, Liam becomes more desperate and scared. His only touchstone and inner solace is Ondry. 💜

Ondry might not be the first lover Liam had submitted to, but he was the only one Liam trusted to protect him.

And my god!!! 😱 LG included kissing in this book. Lots and lots of tender and passionate kissing. And Ondry loves it a lot and thinks it’s very similar to performing “ilsil”. 💗💜💗

Ondry pressed his lips against Liam’s. For a moment, they were locked in place. Then instinct took over. Liam parted his lips and explored the unfamiliar shape of Ondry’s mouth. His eyes closed, and he slid his hand around the back of Ondry’s neck. Ondry curled his tail around Liam’s leg and then used his arm to pull Liam close to his chest. Following Liam’s lead, Ondry parted his lips. Liam felt the tentative flicker of Ondry’s tongue against Liam’s lip. 💋💋💋

And sex, lots and lots of tail sex. 😊 Ah .. I’m a one happy gal reading this book and can’t stop smiling like an idiot. 😌 This novel is about facing your biggest fears and overcoming them so that you can truly move on and be truly happy in your life. 👏 I love how Ondry was supportive and caring of Liam. He’s the epitome of tender loving masters. 😍

However, Ondry cherished no memory more than that of Liam stumbling toward him, clinging to him in search of protection.

Ah, I became a putty in LG’s expert writing. I looove the ending. It didn’t leave loose ends on earth and wrapped up very nicely and perfectly. But I need more!!! I need to read more of Ondry and Liam ~ *sigh ~ and I also wanna read Zach’s story. I really hope another installation will come out soon. And I want to contribute special thanks to Chelsea for encouraging me to dive into this series in the first place and for her utter love and enthusiasm for Ondry & Liam. O&L forever!!! 💙😘💙

Favorite excerpts from the book: 😇 ~ *sigh* ~

My desire for you is greater than my desire for status, and you must know how much I crave status.”

A palteia is the only being a Rownt can ever love unconditionally and keep forever.”

“You are so beautifully mine,” Ondry whispered.

I will defy the gods on this matter.” “You don’t believe in the gods.” “Then they will be easy to defy,” Ondry said.

Holy shit do I love this series. I read this through the day it came out and then promptly reread it--how's that for a recommendation! It's hard to put into words what makes this strange story so original and lovely--except maybe that so much of it is about words, about the difficulties and potential of communication, and how the meaning of certain key words embody and impact culture and perspective.

So little happens in this volume--no attacks by predators or evil officers, nothing that we'd usually call danger. It mostly concerns a negotiation over a trade agreement, with a conversation with an old war buddy and a visit to a hospital thrown in for good measure: so how can these seemingly dull events feel so rich and crucial, so full of warmth and philosophical depth?

Moreover, despite the lack of anything resembling the usual sci-fi excitement, I was continually thrilled by the way this book felt like a real advance on the two previous ones: much as I loved them, in their celebration of Ondry and the Rownt, they did at times come close to vilifying humans and earth culture, which is pretty common in sci-fi and always (to me) annoying. Here that tendency is explored and interrogated, as Liam confronts the fact that he'd mostly remembered those who'd mistreated him, forgetting the decent people who'd risked their lives to help him, and Ondry and the Grandmothers are forced to recognize the importance of the human qualities of empathy and sympathy that are alien to the Rownt.

There's a lot more I could add, but I'll just close by saying that I've not found any sci-fi out there quite like the Claimings series, with the same balance of warmth, lovable characters, hot sexytimes, and speculative depth. And in contrast to the epic length of so much sci-fi, Lyn Gala achieves all of this in books that consistently come in at less than 200 pages.

Bottom line: highest recommendation

I've said this before - this isn't your conventional romance, but what a romance it is. Probably the most romantic thus far in this series, as Ondry and Liam's relationship continues to evolve.

There's actually a purpose, a goal that is driving Ondry to ensure his beloved palteia remains by his side for many years beyond natural biology. Language/philosophical/ human/Rownt barriers abound, bringing many questions and few assurances. However what remains steadfast are the feelings these two have for each other. I continue to bask in Ondry's fierce protectiveness, his complete and utter devotion to Liam. These two work so in sync, and above all else, put each other first which is always, always, lovely to witness.  Their dynamic has progressed and a new level of intimacy is reached, which I'm sure many will greatly appreciate.

Gala continues to impress with cultural expansion and exploration as these two races strive to understand and forge a new precedent. Always eye opening to our own human ways of thinking, this remains smart and thought provoking.  She surely doesn't shirk on Rownt nature, values, and ways of living either - making the pairing of Ondry and Liam that much more precious and rare.

So I'll reiterate what many reviewers have pointed out...

"The Rownt do feel love the way couples might, but they can’t have it. They are a world of Doms, and they aren’t allowed to touch anyone. Touch is all about control. And then every once in a while a palteia comes along, and that’s the one person they’re ever allowed to love....can ever love unconditionally and keep forever.”

Swoon!

Tell me that doesn't push all your buttons?

Admittedly, there's less angst here and more of a reaffirmation of how solid these two are. Have no doubt though, it's evident the feels here are so strong. Their joined lives have really just begun, and there's definitely hope and anticipation on the horizon. There's certainly plenty more to look forward to, as I know Ondry will move and defy all in achieving his mission.

I can't wait.

You know, I never could have guessed that I would swoon over a fictional 7-foot, purple, turtle-looking, tailsex-having alien.
description

'Affiliations, Aliens, and Other Profitable Pursuits' is slow-paced, even more so than the previous two books. This is sci-fi without the explosions, hyperdrives, and life-or-death situations. It's a look at how humans, and other sentient creatures, interact. In book 3, Liam returns to human society with Ondry by his side. Interacting with other humans shows Liam how much his way of thinking has changed, and how badly he needs Ondry.

And I really liked seeing how much Ondry needs Liam in return. Given how Ondry claimed Liam, there was a bit of a power-imbalance between the two. But reading through Ondry's POV how much being apart from Liam even for a few hours pained him, and how much he was willing to give up for Liam, proves that Ondry does love Liam, even if that love is different from conventional human love.

What I enjoy most about this series is that it turns human notions about sex and love on its head. Ondry and Liam are not sexually compatible, at least not in the way regular humans are, yet they still find love and pleasure with one another. And now there's kissing!

This series also takes a new angle on D/s, replacing subs and doms with palteias and a chiltas. Lyn Gala has built a unique world with the Rownt, and despite my initial hesitations, I've really come to love it.

For fans of the previous 2 books, this book will be a winner. It's got the feels, the unique world-building, and the tailsex that Lyn Gala does so well. Now I need book 4!

Re-read September 2023

Still so amazing.

--------------------------

God, I love this series!

In this installment Liam and Ondry move to the Calti, a Rownt ship. They are asked to help in trade with humans. But Ondry is afraid how this will affect Liam. Liam is hesitant himself, since he doesn't have the best experiences with the human race. He'd rather stay with Ondry and the Rownt and not deal with humans at all..

I can't seem to get enough of Ondry and Liam. Ondry would do anything for Liam, even give up his rank, which is most important for Rownt. And Liam loves Ondry with all his heart. This relationship is so loving, I want to read at least 10 more books about them.

I admire the way Lyn Gala has created an entirely new species, with all the differences or similarities in humans and Rownt. I love the Rownt. I especially love the way they see their palteia, as someone to be cherished and honored.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaand…. we finally got the kissing!

The perfect addition to this wonderful series. I specially love how Rownt society and ranks like "Tuk" were further explained and that humanity finally had a chance to redeem itself. It's amazing how insightful this story is into human mind and society. And as always when it comes to Ondry and Liam, the linguist in me had a lot of fun! I hope there is more to read. Beautiful, impressive alien romance.
This is the third book in the series, it doesn't work as standalone.
No smut. Little sex. Lots of comfort giving.
Cultural, linguistic and psychological questions are woven into the plot that continues to evolve around Onry and Liam's relationship.
The way the author shows human behaviour and beliefs to be illogical and cruel (through discussions between the protagonists) is fantastic.

Thanks Smutty Sully for putting this series on my radar!

I do love this series. Of all the human-and-alien-in-love stories I've read, this one is the most able to make me believe the alien is truly not just some variant of human, and yet to also convince me that these are two people who belong together romantically.

The first two books (and wonderful short snippet stories) gave us Liam trying to survive and thrive on the Rownt world, in a culture very alien to his own. Fortunately there is one aspect that makes him and Ondry fit together like lock and key - the fact that Ondry is a caretaker-Dom to end them all, and Liam is a very damaged, very smart sub who needs that, and wants nothing more than to be worthy of it. The sex is not sex per se, but each character delighting in pleasing the other with physical touch appropriate to their species. So well done and the details are convincing.

In this book, the two join a Rownt ship which is on a mission to human space, to help with mutual contact and understanding (and trade, because for the Rownt, that's what it's all about.) This is not a first-contact story, but the two cultures are still in the early stages of discovery.

There are some wonderful moments of misunderstanding, and of understanding. I enjoyed having both Liam and Ondry's POVs in this book. The Rownt culture still holds some surprises for the reader, as the human culture does for the Rownt. This book moved a little more slowly than the last two, but I still look forward to a reread. I'd happily pick up a fourth volume, should the author grace us with one.

Sigh. Liam & Ondry. Me Happy.

When Ondry hovered over him, Liam felt so wonderfully trapped. He needed another word for it because trapped had such negative associations, and Liam loved this feeling. It was love and caring and safety and comfort all in one. Trapped was not fearing the future because Ondry would never let go. Every time Ondry pinned him down, Liam had physical proof that he could trust Ondry to always want him – always hold him close. Sometimes the old fears haunted him, but Ondry’s promise to never let him leave comforted Liam.

I love the way Liam’s brain works, the way he thinks. He’s got a good bit of that survivalist, life hard won part of him now mixing with some innocence (he’s allowing more of it to show now that he feels safe with Ondry) and his increasing knowledge of the Rownt, and it gives him confidence. Sometimes he recognizes and uses it, sometimes he doesn’t. It’s one of the changes in his life he’s still navigating. All of it allows him to embrace his need to feel and reveal vulnerability, especially with Ondry.

Ondry & Liam. Sigh. Steamy hot together, they be.

For Ondry’s part, he’s very proud and protective of Liam. He’s also working through the changes in his life, those related to Liam and those related to his changing status as practiced on Prarownt. He’s also still carrying his arrogant streak, though less often and not on a trigger. He loves caring for Liam, loves challenging him, teasing him. Their relationship is progressing, and they’re more and more finding themselves on equal footing, behaving and working as partners, personally and in business. It’s a good thing because some serious stuff is going on here, some with galaxy-wide implications.

Listening to Liam verbally spar with a Grandmother, Ondry could not remember a time when he had been more proud.

Gala adds more layers onto the cultural part of her world building for the series in this book. She reveals more, strengthening connections, and gaining subtlety and a level of complication that allow for greater exploration of these characters, as well as this universe. It all made me feel more a part of the story, an intimate observer.

A significant difference between this book and the previous two in the series is that this takes place off of Prarownt, with many more humans in the mix. It changes the dynamic and provides opportunity for new experiences for Liam and Ondry, therefore giving me more on which to sink my story loving teeth. All of the characters, minor and major alike, are working inside a relatively unexplored existence and the consequences are wide reaching.

Lawdy. Liam and Ondry. These two are beautiful and scorching in their intimacy, and their desire to learn more about each other, in order to better serve one another.

Something that is not at all different from the previous stories, and one in which Gala excels, is her ability to portray conflict within, as opposed to external causes of such. The challenges these characters face mostly result from historical emotional complications and the difficulty in handling them, as well as understanding them in each other. This goes for the differences between Rownt and Human. No huge gunfights, no space ship battle ballet, but instead struggles internally and interpersonally provide the main action. I was engaged. And I had loads of fun!

A special shout out to how Gala communicated awkwardness. There are all levels of awkward in this story and they’re honest, believable, and easily relatable.

For me, this is some of Gala’s best writing and storytelling. There is some (forgive me LOL) awkward phrasing here and there, with probably better word choices to be made, but those are traversed with little difficulty. This is a smooth read, emotionally on target, humorous, and logically plotted. A large part of this is the increased role of the various Grandmothers. That’s all I’ll say. I love them.

Will we get a story next from Imshee?? I hope so! Yeah, I’m not even gonna try and be subtle about that hint. :)

If you’ve read the first two books in this series, I’m saying it’s a safe bet you’ll love this. If you haven’t started the series yet, you now have three books to enjoy all in one go. Now git to it! The first one is Claimings, Tails, and Other Alien Artifacts, followed by Assimilation, Love, and Other Human Oddities.

I started this series as a buddy read here on GR with several friends, Lisazj1 & Lisa, Stacey, Amy, Lila, Heather K and Anna joined us along the way, plus there were guest appearances from Jill, Jenn, Eepa & Tully. Thank you all for stopping by joining the buddy read and just generally adding to the fun. After Claimings, Tails and Other Alien Artifacts some of us carried right on through to the end...the end being this Affiliations, Aliens and Other Profitable Pursuits, or at least it's the ending for now.

I honestly wasn't sure how I was going to feel about these books since I'm really not a big fan of Scifi...ok, maybe not a fan at all, but I am a fan of Lyn Gala and I can happily say she has not let me down. From start to finish I thoroughly enjoyed this series. The relationship between Liam and Ondry developed throughout the books and while it was in some ways comparable to a D/s relationship at the same time there were aspects that to me seemed very different.

I think what made these books work so well for me was the way that Ms Gala gave us not just the story but the world building. It was all interwoven without big info dumps. We were given the language through Liam and Captain Susan Diallo as they interpreted things from English to Rownt or Rownt to English. We see the physical world and other characters mainly through Liam's perspective and Ondry's.

Interestingly enough one of the things that I found to be a bit annoying was also one of my favorite things about these books and that was all the explaining that happened. Yes at times it contributed to things becoming a teensy bit boring, however, this same thing was a huge contributor to the story's believability for me because there is no way that I would have bought into a story where everyone magically understood each other. I live in Canada and if you were to drop me off in the middle of Japan or Russia I would have no clue what anyone speaking anything but English was saying to me so how could I possibly believe that someone from another planet would know what was being told to them...truthfully, I couldn't. But you give me an alien race and someone who has studied their language and still has trouble translating words sometimes because there are no equivalents in one language or the other and I'm so on board with that.

Claimings was not only a series that told me a wonderful story but one that made me wonder about things. In this case I found myself wondering when and I say when because I am not so arrogant that I think earth is the only planet in a very vast universe that contains intelligent life, so I found myself wondering when we meet other intelligent life forms what impression will we make on them? I sincerely hope it's better than the one that we sometimes make on each other...person to person or even nation to nation. I don't know if big brother is watching but maybe what we need to remember is that someone could be watching and what will they think?

At the end of it all I'm still not a fan of Scifi but I am a fan of this author and this series. I would love to read more. More Liam & Ondry, more tail pulling, more intergalactic trading, more Grandmothers...just more.

I really wanted to like this third instalment, because I absolutely loved Liam, Ondry and the Rownt world in the first book. I've reread 'Clamings...' more than five times and it's as good every single time. But no matter how much I love these guys, I honestly can't rate this part of their story any higher.

Liam and Ondry travel to Earth, and we get glimpses of life onboard the ship and get to be part of the tentative trade negotiations between the humans and the Grandmothers, with Liam as a cultural interpreter. Was it exciting? Unfortunately not. There were lots and lots of dialogue, but not much happening in neither the relationship nor as a space adventure. In my opinion this book was lacking a good plot, one that would be interesting on its own, regardless of the previous books.

Unlike the first book in this series, there was also a big cast of side characters while I prefer the focus to be on the main couple in a romance novel. All in all, I'm sad to say this instalment wasn't for me.

My review might be hinder by the fact that I listened to this as an audiobook while stuck in a hell of my own creation (baking Christmas cookies for 7 hours straight) so I can only really comment on the general vibes of this book which I would say was like snuggling with a lover under a warm blanket but someone has twitter notifications on and we keep getting reminded of the horrors that exist in a capitalist society, you know? I enjoyed this throughly though the voice chosen for Ondry was so unexpected that I found it a little comedic but I learned to roll with it. Will get around to the next one eventually though I loath to let this series end as it is such a treat.

Veremos no próximo livro!

(reread) This part is like an extended preview of what's to come. I couldn't be more excited.

reread (4.25/5).

Romance for the win. I loved, loved how close and affectionate Ondry and Liam have become. Liam submitting was always beautiful to see but I feel like the palteia status was explored a bit more in this part of the series.

“When Ondry hovered over him, Liam felt so wonderfully trapped. He needed another word for it because trapped had such negative associations, and Liam loved this feeling. It was love and caring and safety and comfort all in one. Trapped was not fearing the future because Ondry would never let go. Every time Ondry pinned him down, Liam had physical proof that he could trust Ondry to always want him—always hold him close.”

Another much-needed victory for Liam was confronting his past in order to heal. He was still suffering so much from his trauma — it was about damn time he got some closure. I loved those few scenes, but I especially loved how supportive Ondry was throughout this book.

“A human would get tired of having to make me the center of his life.”
“And I am not human.”

As big a part as romance played in this book, the relationship between humans and Rownt definitely had its moments too. I particularly liked how many new realisations there were and how my understanding of the Rownt became so much better.

“We’re palteia. They feel love. I don’t care what Colonel Diallo told you; the Rownt do feel love the way couples might, but they can’t have it. They are a world of Doms, and they aren’t allowed to touch anyone. Touch is all about control. And then every once in a while a palteia comes along, and that’s the one person they’re ever allowed to love.”

I kinda wished Liam and Ondry had more alone time in this part of the series but obligations and trading got in the way of that.
But be that as it may, their personal goals will be pursued again soon.

previous rating: 4/5.

I was equally sceptical and excited about this book.

It turns out I was right to be sceptical. I can’t say I was very fond of the plot (especially the different setting) and I didn’t like how Liam’s trauma wasn’t really in the center of the plot, despite playing a big role in the story. I felt like something was missing like more actual hurt/comfort scenes or something like that.

Nonetheless, I also cannot say I disliked it because I really didn’t.

An Extraordinary Story with an Outstanding Narration

Overall: 5 stars
Performance: 5 stars
Story: 5 stars

Emotional engaging, intellectually invigorating, absorbing, original, complex , thought provoking perfectly describes the awesomeness and reasons why , I love Affiliations, Aliens, and Other Profitable Pursuits and the entire Claimings series.

~ l will not lose you. " The story scrolls say only Palteia can defy the laws of the gods, for even the gods would hesitate to stand between a Palteia and his chosen Chilta. " ~

John Solo
narration brings an already amazing and unique story to new levels of delight enjoyment. He is a master of his craft . He makes one feel, as you're physically there, witnessing and playing a part in the story he narrates.

~ Ondry stroked Liam’s neck. “Something the female said upset you.” Liam laughed. “You’re far more upset about her than I am.” “True,” Ondry agreed, “but irrelevant to my statement.” ~

Lyn Gala continues building and layering this remarkable and impressive world. In book 3, we find Ondry and Liam growing , learning and evolving as individuals and as a couple . Their relationship and commitment to each other continues strong and after a series of events in earth, it grows indestructible.

The wonderful Grandmothers are front and center in book 3. We get to know them better; from their thought process and type of thinking , to their ever growing curiosity , infinite knowledge to their humility , self awareness and failings.

description

If you're still reading this review , I hope you read/listened Claimings Books 1 and 2 . If you haven't, I encourage you to do so . Ondry and Liam's tale is so character driven and detailed rich , you'll miss out if you even skip a single chapter of this extraordinary book series.

I honestly recommend this series to anyone looking for something unique and against the grain.

Book #3 is slow and languid but it’s also full of depth. We get a dual POV with Ondry and Liam, which I very much enjoyed. Seeing his side of Liam’s claiming was fascinating. Diallo is there but is not a focus which pleased me. Focus is back more tightly on the relationship of Ondry and Liam, how they interact with each other and with Rownts and humans. The guys are now off the Rownt home planet and into a huge spaceship so Ondry can advance his status through trade as well as eventually get in contact with a much advanced race to try and extend Liam’s lifespan to be a bit more in sync with Ondry’s.

This series is very entertaining and addictive. Ondry and Liam are great together. It was good to see them work together and also Liam being able to stand on his own.

I feel like these books are short but a lot goes on in each. It reads like a show or film and I enjoy every minute of it.
