To find her future she must travel to the past. Jessica Maxwell cannot believe her bad luck. The research paper that should have made her career has turned her into a laughing stock, her funding grant is about to run out, and someone has ransacked her lab. This is another delightful Time Travel romance in the Arch Through Time series by Katy Baker. I love these books and try not to miss one. I have read several of these books but haven't reviewed all that I have read.I will go back and re-read the ones I missed reviewing. All of the books in this series seem to have one consistent link, a strange old woman appears out of nowhere and sends the heroines back to Medieval Scotland. They don't always stay in the past but most do. There almost always is a hero that defines their heart's desire. I gave this book 4.65 of 5.0 stars for story line, plot and characterization. I was offered and accepted a complimentary ARC of this title which I read and reviewed voluntarily.
This is a part of a series but can be read as a standalone. I feel like this book is much different than the others. Jessica meets Ramsay before they go through the arch. Jessica soon learns that he was sent to the twenty first century years ago. They immediately have to protect themselves from someone else from modern times that is very dangerous. However, they are also trying to find out what his evil plan is.
There are many twists and turns in the story to never know where the story is leading. It keeps you interested from the first page to the end. I also found that The romance between Jessica and Ramsay naturally occured. They didn't seem to fall in love in two days. I enjoyed that as well. I especially enjoyed the character of Jessica. She was interesting and there are facts about her life revealed that she didn't even know.
This is an OK time-travel romance, but I did have a few issues with it.
First off, Jessica adapted to her unexpected time-travel way too easily to believe. I think she would have been a lot more freaked out by it then she was. Also, the highlanders would have been much more concerned with her strange talk and clothes than they were. They just kept thinking she must be "daft", and accepted her behavior as normal for someone from another country. It seemed like they just accepted all her differences too easily. I didn't buy it.
For the most part, I liked both Jessica and Ramsay, but I did get irritated with them a few times. Ramsay was very controlling and bossy, which Jessica did not appreciate. He knew she was from the 21st century, where women were much more independent, so he should not have expected her to be OK with his attitude. I also thought Jessica should have tried harder to understand why she needed to listen to him, since her independent ways sometimes put her in danger.
I didn't buy that Jessica and Ramsay were in love. They were definitely in lust, but they just didn't spend enough time together for me to believe in their love connection. Ramsay also annoyed her a lot when he kept telling her what to do.
I also thought that this story was very similar to the others in the series. There is unexpected time-travel, the h is rescued by a hot highlander, causes trouble with her modern ideas, falls in love with the hot highlander, needs to be rescued again, and then everything ends in an HEA. Many of the scenes, like the love scenes and wedding scenes, are also very similar in all the books in the series.
One other thing bothered me, and this is minor, but it is a pet peeve of mine. The couple on the book cover should look like they are described in the book. In this book, Jessica is described as having dark hair, and Ramsay has auburn hair. Yet, the cover shows a woman with red hair and a man with blonde hair. That mistake may not be the author's fault, but it still bugs me.
The story was mildly entertaining, and I did like Irene -- so if there are more books in the series, I will read them. But I probably would not continue the series if it wasn't free with Kindle Unlimited. Because of the issues I noted above, it gets 3 stars from me.
My rating system is below. 1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it. 2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws. 3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating. 4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one. 5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.
Jessica Maxwell found a keystone with a mysterious substance and wrote a research paper on it but, unfortunately, has been unable to repeat her findings. So, she's now working on a small archeological dig in Scotland testing soil samples. While looking at the arch on the dig, Jess meets an old woman named Irene MacAskil who gives her a mysterious message then disappears. Late one night and two people break into Jess' lab and steal her keystone so she goes after them. They go to the arch and Jess soon winds up in trouble.
Ramsay MacAuley has lived in the 21st century for a few years but is there through an agreement with the Fae. He's really of another time. While he's out one night, Irene finds him giving him his own mysterious message and a flyer for an archeological dig. He goes there and finds two people attacking a wonan so he immediately goes to defend her. In escaping, the pair wind up back in sixteenth century Scotland along with one of the bad guys. Together, Jess and Ramsay must fight an evil that wants to spread across Scotland and in so doing, they just might find their fate.
I absolutely LOVE this series and this book is no exception. I was hooked from the start and read it in one sitting. The characters, both bad and good, are well-rounded allowing the reader to get to know them, faults and all. I'm really looking forward to the next book. I highly recommend both book and series. While the books could be read on their own, you get more from the series if you read them in order.
Another excellent Arch Through Time book. And another MacAuley clan adventure.
Jessica Maxwell is a scientist working in Scotland that thought she had found a way to make her scientific career by discovering a new chemical analysis on a stone she discovered at a dig. Unfortunately, that doesn't pan out and instead she finds herself in danger from from Adaira and Artair Campbell, a brother and sister that has been looking for the stone she described in her research paper.
Meanwhile, Ramsay MacAuley is having his own problems in the 21st Century. He is trying to stop the Campbell siblings from completing their mission to find the keystone to allow them to travel through the arch. He finds them shortly after they steal the keystone from Jessica and attempt to use it to open an arch at the site.
Instead, when Jessica tries to get her keystone back, she sets in motion events that land her and Ramsay in 16th century Scotland with a hitchhiking Artair and his gun. Now they need to stop Artair from creating any long-term damage in the 16th century as well as get Jessica back to her own time. What could go wrong?
I really enjoyed the different turns this book took. And you will enjoy it too. Makes me want to find my own archway through time.
I received an ARC of this ebook to read and give an honest review.
ONE ELECTRIFYING JOURNEY!!! Intensely delightful! Katy brought out the big guns for this tough as nails, nerve racking, rollercoaster ride that blasts this bad boy wide open. Meting out deliciously enticing scenario's that punch dead center with such exuberance and style, grounding in it's strength and awe inspiring in it's depth. Sparks fly as drama, intrigue, secrets, dastardly deeds, danger and mounting suspense blasts this baby into the eye of the storm, breaking it down, throwing it into a tailspin with astonishing impacts. Toss in turmoil, destress and perplexing situations and you have the recipe for one explosive adventure. The characters are original and genuine with qualities and depth that blend in to amazing personalities. The characters and scenes are strikingly sharp with abundant details and colorful descriptions so rich and lively, they balance and flow beautifully. Incredible job Katy, thanks for sharing this little gem us.
Arch Through Time is one of my favorite series and I am always excited for another book. Song of a Highlander did not disappoint! I was happy to know that we’d be getting Ramsay’s story. Although part of a series each of the books can be read individually. If you haven’t read Promise of a Highlander you will have a better understanding of Ramsay if you do. But Katy gives enough background that it doesn’t diminish this story if you haven’t.
This is a great story of finding ones purpose, redemption, family and love.
Song of a Highlander: Arch Through Time. By Katy Baker Kindle unlimited purchase This series twists and turns that only Irene can keep track of. His twin got his book now it's his. Everyone thinks he's dead only his twin knows where Ramsay is. Now he is back in 1572. He doesn't know what the repercussions will be. Like all the time place women in this series Jess has no clue what is going on but she knows Irene has something to do with it and when she meets up with that willing she's giving her what for. I love this series.
As stated in my review of books 9 & 10 of this series. Because I am binge reading this series. I was bored with, what seem to be, redundant storylines & endings. But I was excited because book 10 hinted at a different twist to the story.
Well, the twist kinda fell short of what I was hoping for. But...this book was a bit more engaging. But I'm still hoping for a 21st century happily ever after.
This was a good time travel romance story that involved Ramsay and Jessica going back in time to stop Artair Campbell from opening a portal that would release the UnSeelie and give him power.
Once again this author has created a incredibly good storyline!
Loved this book, a great storyline and lots of action, Maggie was back in it and lots of others. The part where they block the river was incredibly good! Loved the ending!
I really enjoyed this installment of the Arch Through Time series. The unseelie vs the seelie. Good prevails as always thanks to a man who died then traveled in time!
I really enjoyed reading this.vook! Just the right mix of hard rock bodies, damsel in distress and true love found. oh, and thr Fae! Can't forget them!
I love the fact that Ramsey was able to return to his time & be with his family & marry for love. I also love how Jess met her grandfather & she looked like his wife & walked her down the isle.
I tried really hard to get into this one. I typically enjoy time travel Scottish romances, but this one just left me wanting. The romance between the main characters was lacking and the characters were one-dimensional. I did not finish at 65% of the way in.
Jessica and Ramsay went to 1572 from the 21st century with Irene MacAskill’s help. Once there so was an enemy. They had to fight to remove that enemy. Once done they became Aires to a kingdom.
Ramsay was supposed to have died in an accident that devastated his brother Ross (Promise of a Highlander- Book #10), but instead was given the choice of living in the 21st Century. Despite losing his way, Ramsay still has honor, so when he finds a woman from the future who has also time-traveled, he knows he needs to set right what needs to be done to stop the creeping evil.
Twists & turns, some much like the previous books, but enough different to rate 4*'s to me.
What starts out as an unexpected travel through time turns out to be so much more in this romantic adventure. Ramsey and Jessica on their quest to stop evil from being unleashed discover they have more of a connection in the past. Interesting characters make this story exiting to read. Great writing and I highly recommend.
