Really like this book. Simple devotional each day with a prayer and Scripture going through 100 Hebrew names of God and their meaning. Despite all His names, our amazing God is still indescribable!
I used these as daily Bible notes, and it was good to have an aspect of God to focus on, and then read the suggested verses (although usually I would read the whole psalm or paragraph, because only individual verses were suggested, and it's usually better to read them in context). Most of the entries are universally applicable, but some of them are a little US-centric (like when it says that a child in hospital needs an advocate to make sure they actually get treated and the insurance pays for it -a terrifying idea!)
I don't know Hebrew (I studied it for a term and can remember about two words) but I do know Greek, and a couple of the Greek terms were a bit odd. "King Eternal" was given as βασιλεῖ τῶν αἰώνων, which is what it says in the verse (1 Tim 1:17) but that means to the king eternal (or king of the ages), so out of context it should have been βασιλεὺς; and δι' οὗ τὰ πάντα was denoted as "my everything" but it means "through whom all things". There's nothing wrong with the devotional thoughts that follow, though, so I suppose it doesn't matter too much if the Greek (and perhaps the Hebrew - I don't know) is at times a bit skewiff. There's actually the number of each name/attribute (they're not all really names) in Strong's Greek/Hebrew Dictionary at the end, which earned it an extra star from me.
The book is pretty, with a padded cover and soothing artwork of nature scenes at each entry, so it would make an excellent gift. It's not heavy theology (I've filed it under "light and fluffy") but it is sound, and a good jumping off point for thinking about God.
I don’t recall how I learned about this little gem, but am so glad I did. There are 100 entries in the book. Each entry features a name of God ( in Hebrew or Greek as appropriate), Scripture addresses related to that name, a brief devotional, and a prayer. At the end of the book, the author has also organized the lessons on God’s names to form a six-week Bible Study with subjects as follow: 1) God, Our Refuge; 2) Our Gracious God; 3) God, Our Direction; 4) God, Our Life; 5) Our Eternal God;and 6) God, Our Judge.
"100 Names of God" is a daily devotional containing 100 devotions. Each devotion is 1-2 pages long, so they don't take long to read. The author did a good job of leaving me with insights to think about throughout the day. Each devotion covered a name of God from the Old or New Testament and started with that name along with a verse where that name is used. The author explained how this name provides important insights into God's character. He clearly explained his points and provided background information when needed. He ended each devotion with a prayer and a question prompting the reader to see how these insights impact your life.
I really enjoyed this devotional and plan to read through it again. I'd highly recommend it.
I received this book as a .pdf review copy from the publisher.
I am so impressed with this Devotional! Rarely, do we find devotionals that are short, but packed with rich theology AND life application. Hudson does not draw on personal stories or anecdotes, but unpacks deep spiritual truths by cross-referencing scripture. At the same time, the focus is not on head knowledge, but on genuine communion and relationship with God! Thank you Mr. Hudson for writing this book!
Excellent! What a special surprise to receive this from a missionary we donate to. Totally didn't expect it, so that makes it even sweeter! I lead both worship and prayer meetings, and learning and meditating on ,hat a wonderful way to praise and pray to God, and meditate on who He is. Great book.
