Nice guys finish last. At least that’s how I feel when I watch my ex-girlfriend marry someone else. But when I’m showing a prime piece of real estate and in walks the most gorgeous woman I’ve ever seen, I don’t really think about nice or my ex or anything but how to get to know her better. Cort Sellers has baggage of her own—secrets she’s not ready to reveal, and a career that puts her whole life on display—but the more I get to know her, the more I’m willing to do anything it takes to win her heart.
Willow Aster is a USA Today Bestselling Author of emotional, angsty love stories with a side of quirk. She is co-writer of The End of Men series with Tarryn Fisher and co-writer of the G.D. Taylors series with Laura Pavlov.
Miles Ahead is Miles Stark’s story. Miles is one of the secondary characters in 5,331 Miles, and I was excited to get this novella about him. He was a sweet guy and deserved his happy.
Everyone wants a bad boy, but Miles Stark has always been the nice guy. You know the saying ‘Nice Guys Finish Last’- he feels that deep. When he meets Cort Sellers he has no idea she is a celebrity. He has an instant attraction to her, but he’s just her real-estate agent and doesn't see it going anywhere. Cort is going through something big in her life and needs a friend. Miles is there for her when she needs someone and she finds his niceness his most endearing quality. They’re a great match.
Miles and Cort fell hard and fast for one another. It was a bit of insta-love, but I still adored it. I loved seeing Miles find love again, and watching Cort overcome everything from her past with the support of Miles was a beautiful thing. They made an amazing couple and the epilogues of this novella made my heart so happy.
This can be read as a stand alone, but if you’ve read 5,331 Miles I think you’ll love it even more!
If you have read 5,331 Miles by Willow Aster than you have met Miles and probably fallen in love with him just like me.
I was so excited to hear that Willow was going to write a HEA for Miles. I loved his character in 5,331 Miles and I loved him in this story too.
Miles Ahead could be considered a standalone novella. I don’t think you have to read the first book but I would highly recommend it. This story is told in Dual POV and actually touches on a subject that is pretty prominent right now. I was surprised the author pulled it into their story but it worked. I thought the flow and pace of the story worked well since this was a novella. I will say this book could be considered an insta-love since there isn’t much time before they say the words, but like I said it worked for these characters.
In this story we follow Miles and Cort. This story is 2 years after the end of 5,331 Miles. Miles is a realtor and is trying to sell this big mansion. So when he shows up to the showing and sees Cort, he is captivated by her. Cort is a famous actress who has taken a step away from the acting world due to devastating circumstances. My heart hurt for her after finding out what happened to her. She is looking for a place that has privacy. When she meets Miles at the showing, the attraction is is instant. Will these two be able to get their HEA?? What happens when Cort’s past comes to light?? Read this quick love story to find out.
If you like Willow Aster I would highly recommend reading her La Jolla Series, this is a lighter side to her writing. I absolutely LOVED both of these stories and can’t wait to see what is next from her.
I didn't quite read the original book for this but it's no biggie. Miles had huge heartbreak with the girl he loved married someone else. Now his new client unbeknownst to him is a actress. A retired one. Cort's got a similar issue to a current event, sexual abuse in Hollywood. She's now watching her back. They become fast friends and the attraction is there quite fast I think. But it's a short story so it's fine.
Miles is the a good example of nice guys finish first. He might think being nice is code for friend zone but it helped with Cort. He's a solid break amongst all the chaos she's dealing with. It was lighter in terms of Willow Aster kind of books. Probably cause it's a novella and Miles' start was a bit angsty. It's short and sweet with some steam. Enjoyable fast read.
‘Miles Ahead’, by Willow Aster, is book 1.5 in the La Jolla series and is a novella featuring the character Miles from ‘5,331 Miles’. I truly enjoyed reading this novella. It is another home run for Willow Aster!
The story starts where ‘5,331 Miles’ ended, but from Miles’ perspective; he is watching his ex-girlfriend, whom he is still in love with, marry another man. For Miles, this just proves that nice guys finish last. The story then jumps two years when Miles meets Cort, and their lives a turn towards love and healing. Cort helps proves to Miles that not all nice guys have to finish last; they just need their right person.
This was a sweet love story and another must read by Willow Aster!
I loved the way Miles and Cort fell in love and how fierce he is when he loves someone deeply as he loves Cort. He protected and respected her since the start, showing how loyal he is. Cort is in a bad place. She's an actress and struggling with some personal problems in the industry. The #metoo movement is one of the subjects in this book. Together they discover unconditional love!
I also loved Mira and Jaxson in this book and the hints Willow gives us for the future!
I was so happy to hear that Miles from 5,331 Miles was going to get a short story to his HEA. The story did feel a bit rushed, but I knew going in it was novella and that is usually the feeling with the shorter books. I still loved Miles' character and was so happy he received his HEA and Cort was a great character for him. The epilogues...loved them.
Good read and really liked the characters. Although a slight hiccup at the start their relationship develops nicely. The angst and crisis is dealt with in a satisfactory manner although I’d have liked more information about her coping skills going forward. That said good romance and liked the sister’s antics in her defence.
Each month I *impatiently* await Willow’s newsletter, because well duh I love her but also because of the stories she includes in them!
Just like with 5,331 Miles, I greedily ate up each piece of this story with each newsletter, and when the final piece ended up in my email I couldn’t wait to see if Miles would get the happily ever after he deserved! I have had a huge crush on Miles since his introduction in 5,331 Miles. While I was definitely rooting for Jax and Mira, I was still so sad for Miles, and wanted him to have a happy ending so badly, so when I first saw that he was getting his own story I was ecstatic to say the least and I absolutely loved Cortlyn, she is such an amazing and strong character! This Novella was the perfect addition to the series and I loved every word! Short and sweet but still packed a punch!
If you haven’t read 5,331 Miles yet, read it!! Then go fall in love with Miles and Cort, too!!
I’m going to be straight up with you. I read 5,331 Miles when it first came out and loved it, but I’ve read SO many books between that one and this, I didn’t remember Miles at all. Thankfully Miles Ahead is written in such a way that I didn’t feel like I was missing anything but not rereading 5,331 Miles first. It may be a spinoff novella, but it is easily read as a standalone.
As someone who has experienced the ‘when you know, you know’ phenomenon, I loved Miles and Cort’s love story. They had an immediate connection and despite both of their best efforts to ignore it, protect themselves from heartache, and wait for better timing; each of them couldn’t resist the pull of the other. That kind of connection always feels special to me, and it was no different in Miles Ahead. I also deeply appreciate the social relevance it held. Miles Ahead touched on an issue that is forefront in today’s society and incredibly important to talk about.
I am disappointed that Miles Ahead is only a novella. I feel like there was so much more story to tell, and I was left wanting, not in a good way, for more Miles and Cort. The entire timeline was highly accelerated, and it seemed like there were some parts of the book weren’t as fleshed out as they could have been. There were also a few minor continuity and editing errors that, while they didn’t detract from the story, just bugged me.
Overall Grade: ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ Willow Aster has released her published version of her newsletter story, Miles Ahead. This is a novella inspired by Miles Stark, the spurned character from Aster’s 5,331 Miles. In this tale, Miles finally finds his happy ending in a way that is inspiring and sweet. Miles Ahead is an endearing little nugget of a story about resilience.
Miles is a real estate agent, still mourning his unrealized relationship with Mirabelle. This story begins with his attendance at her and Jaxson’s wedding, and his belief that he will never find anyone to fulfill her place. Fast-forward in time and Miles is preparing to show a home as a means to sell it. He meets Cortlyn “Cort” Sellers as a potential buyer. From their first meeting, Miles feels pulled to her. After a quick look, Cort decides to buy the big home, and Miles believes it will be the last time he sees her, even though it saddens him. However, while running one day, he encounters her again. They begin to meet each other for running until there is a misunderstanding, and Miles’s past hurt feelings over Mira threaten to derail his burgeoning connection with Cort. Additionally, Cort, a retired film actress, is enduring a difficult, painful situation, potentially interfering with any future with Miles. Will Miles and Cort move beyond their pasts and find a happy ending together?
I am a personal fan of newsletter stories. The delayed gratification of them reminds me of old-fashioned serials. Having to wait for the newsletter to earn a little bit of story is exciting to me. However, as a novel or novella, I struggle with them especially if the author fails to “add” to the story. For its basic premise, Miles Ahead is an interesting story. It’s good to see Miles get more story after Mira chooses Jaxson over him in 5,331 Miles. However, Cort’s story in this romance is an important one. She represents the #metoo women and their stories, and it felt glossed over in this novella. Since this is a novella, Miles and Cort’s characterizations seemed underdeveloped, and I simply wanted more. Their development is missing dimension. I don’t know Aster’s intention for this series, the La Jolla series, but I think more space could have been given to make us care more for Miles and Cort. This story attempts to develop an emotional connection with the reader, but that connection never develops beyond a surface feeling.
Even more, Aster presents her lesson of enduring trauma and empowering women to tell their stories in the face of their painful plights. However, it occurs late in the story. The lesson is there, but it’s momentary. There is a resolution to Cort’s tribulation, but, again, like the characterization, I thought it could have used more development. I know this is the danger with novellas, but I think novellas work best when they are smaller ideas or tighter stories. Since the message of this romance is necessary, Aster should have developed this into a full length novel, in my opinion.
I am a fan of Willow Aster’s storytelling. Her ideas and insight seem necessary for romancelandia. I am also thankful that Miles Stark had his “day in the sun” and finds his happy ending. Miles Ahead is a sweet story. You will fall in love with Miles’s consideration and “nice guy” persona, and he acts heroically in this book. Cort too is the representative strong heroine enduring the travesties of her life and fighting for women everywhere. You will appreciate her struggle throughout the story. However, I personally would have liked more story here. Again, that’s the danger of a novella. If you like a short read with a sweet hero, a resilient, empowered heroine, and a journey back to La Jolla, then you’ll definitely want to read Willow Aster’s Miles Ahead.
This is book 1.5 of the La Jolla Series and focuses on Miles and Cort. Miles was introduced in 5,331 Miles as the other guy fighting for Mira’s affection. Ultimately she chose the other guy and Miles isn’t sure he will ever get over her.
The beginning of Miles Ahead is with Miles watching the wedding of Mira and Jaxson from the shadows of the beach where they are exchanging their vows.
Two years later, fate gives Miles another chance at love when he meets Cort during a walk through of a mansion he is trying to sell. Due to his lack of confidence in himself, he isn’t sure what to do with the instant attraction he feels for her. Cort is going through her own personal hell and isn’t willing to let anyone in, but fate doesn’t care about circumstances, it creates its own.
This novella was just what I needed because I was truly hoping that Miles would get his happily ever after, especially with the way 5,331 Miles ended. You can’t help but fall in love with him and Cort as they work their way around each other.
I also love that unlike book 1, this book was shown from both points of views so you get a look at what Cort is going through as well as Miles.
All in all, this was a beautiful quick read that gives you the answers you were wanting after reading the first book in the series. I look forward to seeing what else the author has up her sleeve for this series.
Miles is a character we got introduced to in in 5,331 Miles. I’m so excited that Willow wrote his story. Everyone deserves happiness. The way Willow Aster writes is amazing, the detail, the description…just breathtaking.
This book was written in both the character’s POV. From the beginning Cort was hiding from something and it had me trying to figure out what it was from the beginning. When we found out I was amazed that Willow had written about hot topics that are in the news today. It was great to read how the people in the situation are handling it. We always hear about them and their stories but to read the POV of the person it happened to was eye opening. Cort was a strong actress at the peak of her career, when she “retired” and went into hiding. That is when she met Miles and it was an instant attraction. Something could not keep her away from him, even though she was trying to hide from the rest of the world. She needed to be near him, she felt safe with him.
Miles could not figure it out. He knew she was hiding, but from what he had no idea. He was instantly attracted to her, she took his breathe away from the first second they met. He was always trying to find an excuse to see her, without being a creep lol, but when she told him one day that he was a nice guy, it triggered something inside of him, because in his previous relationships it always felt likt nice guys’ finish last and he did not get the girl, So what did he do, exactly what you think, he started to pull away from Cort. It was a struggle with his head and his heart, he didn’t want to get hurt again. But Cort had other plans as soon as she realized he was avoiding her. She would find him and called him out on his shit. He realized fast that she was not like any other girls and he fell hard.
This book is a must ready, I believe it can be read alone but I recommend reading 5,331 Miles before. The story line among the two books was amazing. Great job Willow, 5 stars!
Miles Ahead By: Willow Aster ****ARC GENEROUSLY PROVIDED BY AUTHOR ****
Miles Ahead by Willow Aster, is book 1.5 in the La Jolla series, a novella featuring Miles from the 5331 Miles book one.
Miles Ahead picks up where 5331 Miles ended and tells Miles story a secondary character from book one.
I was hoping to read Miles Stark’s story and I’m so happy Willow gave us this opportunity to experience a nice beautiful love story. Miles was a “good guy” and reading about him getting his happy ever after is a wonderful ending.
Having him find love again, with such a great strong heroine Cort was satisfying. I only wish there was more story with their initial connection. I felt them falling in love was fast and rushed.
Cort was a great character to experience. I enjoyed how Willow introduced her but wished we had more of Cort.
Cort, represents what most women are speaking out about today the #metoo. Having her story explained was a very profound message to women everywhere. I just wished we had more.
This is a great series thus far and I’m hoping Willow gives us more fun characters to meet and continues to discuss more great interesting issues.
I am beyond happy Willow Aster decided to give Miles his own kind of happy after his heart was broken in 5,331 Miles. He stood out for me in that book as a true stand-up guy and despite his dislike for the word 'nice' he truly is that and so much more. And thankfully one Cort Sellers sees the real man that he is and not just the agent who sells her the house of her dreams.
From the start, these two have a subtle kind of heat between them that only gets stronger as they become running buddies. It only gets better from there as Miles is the support and comfort Cort needs as her high-profile life blows up in epic proportions. Aster beautifully blended the current #metoo movement with their burgeoning love story as Cort's past threatens any hope of true happiness going forward. And it's handled well and because of the length of this book, we don't have to wait long for justice to prevail.
With an adorable stray in Alex who steals the show more than once, Miles Ahead is just what I wanted for my man Miles and this perfect novella made me smile.
Have you read read 5,331 Miles? Well that’s your first mistake. Not that you wouldn’t enjoy Miles Ahead anyway but it will certainly enrich your perspective. We originally meet Miles Stark as a secondary characters in 5,331 Miles. Truth is I was crushing a little on him and was glad to have this novella to get to know him a little better.
Cory Sellers is famous, drop dead gorgeous and carrying HUGE emotional baggage. Miles Stark is immediately interested but she’s way out of his league. He’s still stinging from his past. Despite whatever their differences, they are both going through something in their lives. Those feelings and need for human connection is what draws them together.
Love is redemptive. Love is healing. Love is an equalizer. I totally bought into the instalove between them and digged the dual POV. Willow never fails to give me everything I want in a contemporary romance. Miles Ahead has the highs, lows, angst, the feels and was a great addition to the La Jolla Series.
Willow thanks for the epilogues - they gave me life!
This Novella was the SWEETEST. I LOVED the first novel in this world and I needed this book. I didn't know I did, but I did.
This story is Cort and Miles. You don't know Cort yet, but she is everything you don't know you need.
This story has so much packed into it and yet it doesn't feel rushed or too short. It is exactly what you need it to be.
These are two people who didn't know their lives had a hole until someone showed up and filled it.
This book packs a much though. It brings a lot of current world issues into the light and it breaks your heart a little. In the end though it was everything this story needed.
This review is short, but I don't want to give anything away. Buy it. Read book one. But buy this too. You can read it as a standalone. But don't.
My heart absolutely hurt for Miles throughout 5,331 Miles because while I loved Jackson, there was just something about Miles that I couldn’t let go of. So when I heard about this novella, I just knew all would turn out well for him cause what I love about novellas is that they are short and sweet, and you know that there WILL be a happily ever after at the end. With only a tiny bit of angst, this short story grasped me by the heart strings from the moment Miles and Court meet right to the very end where a glimpse into the second generation and some past characters will SO have you reaching for the nearest box of tissues.
This book also delves into the reality of the #MeToo movement and I am awed by how well the author handles such a subject and outlines just how grave the reality of a situation it is for all these women.
Short and sweet and lovely! When I read Miles Apart, I felt so sad for Miles. He was the most decent of all the guys and he deserved a better ending than Jax had. I felt sorry that this story started with Miles watching Jax and Mira’s wedding from a little distance.
Fast forward, he’s working in real estate for Jax’s father and doing well. Then he sold a house to a beautiful woman, and his heart starting beating for another woman again, after Mira.
She turned to be a Hollywood actress with some legal problems. Their attraction was immediate and electric and the author wrote a wonderful story where Miles’ character was excellently portrayed. He got the wonderful HEA he deserved and it couldn’t have been better!
Willow has easily become one of my favorite authors. Getting lost in her stories is one of my favorite pastimes! After 5,331 miles I knew Miles ahead would not disappoint!
Miles was a secondary character that didn’t get the girl in the first book! I loved Miles and Cort together! Cort totally deserved a good guy like Miles and Miles deserved to find his true love!
I loved the way this story flowed and I am in love with Silas and Ivy!!!! I’m am praying that sometime in the future we may get to see more of them!!!
Thank you Willow for another wonderful story!!!!
If you like sweet romances, with a bit of a dark past then this is for you!
I couldn't wait to read this Novella because after reading about Miles in the first book I wanted him to get his HEA. See Miles is your average guy who goes through life thinking he is the nice guy and he will not get anyone good enough for him.
That all changes when he is showing a home to a woman who is drop dead gorgeous and she has caught his eye. The two have a world wind romance and share everything together. What I loved most about this was seeing Cort go through her changes and open up to Miles and show him that he can be loved and mean the world to the right woman.
I'm going to keep this review short and sweet, just like this book. Definitely wanted more of the characters, but what I got of them was definitely sweet and cute and I adored them. I think they could have more than a novella, but they got their HEA and that's what counts. The main male character, Miles is from a previous book, but I don't think you have to read that book to enjoy this novella. Since this book is short, I don't have much to say. It was cute. It was sweet. And I enjoyed the main characters, the past characters that made an appearance and some new characters that were fun and enjoyable. It was like a tease and I wanted more, but what I got was satisfying. 3.5 stars
While this is a short little novella following one of the characters from Willow Aster’s first book in the The La Jolla series, it could definitely be read on its own.
So being a novella means the author has to get down to business quick, which means the ultimate kiss of death for me, insta love. Nothing makes me DNF a book faster than that. However, since I LOVE this author, I pushed on.
This book could have been amazing if it was a bit longer. However, I did like it in the end, it was just a tid bit rushed for me. I’ve got to lower my expectations for novellas, clearly.
Heartfelt, passionate, insta-love romance that offers us the story of one of the secondary characters in 5,331 Miles. However, it can be read as a standalone as it evolves 2 years after 5,331 miles. Miles and Cort meet and while sparks fly and you can feel they deserve their happily ever after, life is not that simple. Cort’s painful past comes back to haunt her. You’ll have to read and find out what happens. I really enjoyed how their story developed, and I would have liked it a little longer.
Miles Ahead is a quick and fun read, but has a serious subject that has been on the rise lately. When Miles was heartbroken at 5,331 Miles, I hoped he would find his happy ending and this story didn't disappoint. When Cort Sellers appears before Miles, he has no thoughts about his ex and being nice, he just wants to know her better. They both have an immediate connection and try to ignore it to protect themselves, but neither can resist their attraction. And Miles will do everything to win her heart for good. I loved the story and the characters. I recommend the reading.
Best novella ever!!!! Miles.deserved his own HEA and Willow.delivered! 5 shining.stars!!!
I love.all.of Willow .Aster stories. Her.characters take over your heart, life, mind = she writes with passion and humor and I find myself on a rollercoaster of emotions in each story she crafts. I loved Mi!es from 5,331 Miles and was wishing for his HEA! This is.a.Must.Read.for.all Miles.fans! He is giving her other hero's some competition! This gem is a perfect gift for.the.holidays!!!!
Miles Ahead by Willow Aster is the spin-off to her 5331 Miles novel. I loved this book so much, I simply had to get this one too. Blurb: Nice guys finish last.
Miles is a good guy who was dealt a bad hand. The real estate agent is disillusioned and a tad bitter, but then it hits him when he meets the woman of his dreams, his soulmate; his hea. Cortlyn Whitaker is a retired, for now, a-list actress and his new client. This novella is the fitting story for Miles and Cort. I loved the excellent writing and the beautiful storyline. 4,5 Stars.
