At the prime age of twenty-one, I had only kissed one man—that was seven years ago—another life, a life full of pain and sorrows. One I tried to forget. I turned my back on my birthright despite my parent’s last wishes.

Now, I must return to my childhood home, but I am afraid to face the horrors long forgotten. My past was behind me. However, I also wonder if my future awaits me—the barbaric man who kissed me—one who left his imprint in my soul from just one kiss.

P.C. Benson is a new to me author, and I'm very excited about the new paranormal, because I have been watching Shadow Hunters (obviously as a book worm, I did read the books first before the tv show), so I'm all kinds of excited to get back into the Nephilim type of paranormal. This is the story of Odetta, aka Etta, a Nephilim, who is now 21 years old, and had only kissed one man in her life, who was part of her painful past. She lost her parents, and despite their final wishes, she had turned her back on everything having to do with that life, until she had to go back to her childhood home to face the pain she's tried to keep at bay. And that's all that I'm really going to give away since this is a short(ish) story & saying too much would put the possibility of spoilers at a high risk. Plus, honestly, I was confused quite a bit, so I will read this story again after Fortis (Nephilim's Savior Book 1), to see if the longer story would make this almost too quick story less confusing because of things like terminology, who or what different groups are, etc. I can say that I'm quite intrigued, because I love this type of paranormal best. There was heat, and the plot was good with twists to keep me guessing & not being right obviously, not to mention, I really enjoyed Etta as the heroine. I know this review seems so confusing, and trust me, it's confusing for me too, but it's all I got at the moment, so I'll edit this review if I find that my suspicions are correct that flipping around the order of Fortis (Novelette) & Fortis (Nephilim's Savior) will clear things up some more, or I'm just challenged. Anyway, don't go off of my opinion and/or confusion, just read for yourselves, because maybe you completely understand things from the get go! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was a nice and quick read. I really enjoyed Odetta's backstory and her relationship with Gus. I do wish it could have gone into more detail or even showed us how they kept finding each other in different lifetimes, but I know this is a novelette and only meant to show how the two first met. If you read Fortis: Nephilim's Savior Book 1, you'll know that Viktor (Gus) and Tatia (Odetta) have a standing competitive streak when it comes to fighting. It was fun to see them sparring in this book as well and to see how all of competitiveness started. I do think that reading Fortis: Nephilim's Savior helped me better understand this little novelette, but either way it was a good read!

Writing a novella or novelette (in the case of this book) is always challenging. You have to convey as much information as possible in a shorter than usual period of time. All the while, you need to help the reader become immersed in the story and invested in the characters. The author did a good job with these tasks.

I was pulled into Fortis within the first few pages. It was easy to get caught up in this story. However, it took me a little longer to "care" about the characters. Even so, I did connect with them and found the story even better when I did.

Overall, this was a nice, quick read.

This novelette was listed as a standalone but I want to say that for me I think it would have been beneficial to read the first book to have a better understanding of what was going on and some of the terminology.

This book definitely had the groundwork layed to be a really good story and for someone that has ready the previous book it will probably be a hit but someone like me coming in not knowing any background made it confusing.

I will definitely be going back to read Fortis: Nephilim's Savior Book One because I am intrigued enough to want to understand more of what is going on.

I understand this is a novella. I like the idea of historical paranormal, but this story didn't work for me! I wasn't crazy about the writing style or romance.
I think what what weirded me out was the possibly 12-year-old Nephilim princess sharing a deeply romantic kiss with a man, Nephilim, who would later be described as being alive a very long time. Granted he would be her mate. I could have the age wrong. I was a little curious about the other characters but it it seems book one takes place in the future. They might still be alive then, but I'm not sure. I might give book one a try.

Writing a novelette is difficult. You have to provide as much backstory as possible in a shorter time frame. To make this novelette a stand alone, you have to plunge the reader into the story immediately. In Fortis, PC Benson did this well. This was a quick easy read.

I enjoyed this novelette. I was hooked from the beginning, easily caught up in the story and the characters. I enjoy paranormal and this plot was well developed with twists that kept me guessing. I will be reading the Fortis series Book #1 (Nephilim’s Savior) now. I highly recommend this book!

For this being a novella stand alone it did have a lot of information, and backstory to get to know the characters. Though, it did take me a little longer than normal to start to actually care about them. That being said it wasn't a bad read, and I did enjoy it very much.

The fighting scenes were more in depth then the other scenes in the book, but it was a nice change to anything I've read recently! Would recommend for a quick, fun read.

This was stated to be a stand alone but I would have preferred to have more back story before reading it. Odetta was a bit clueless in the sexual areas of the book but a pro at fighting. The two different versions of her clashed in my head. Dialogue was pretty simple during the sex parts and more complicated during the fighting.

This was an intense paranormal love story about second chances, and missed opportunities.
This was a great heart pounding read. The story was very well written with great characters. The story drew me in and I had it finished in one sitting. I would highly recommend this read.

This was a wonderful book. It didn't seem rushed. This was sweet and steamy, full of romance and passion with great characters that were interesting enough to draw you in.
