This scientific self-help book bridges the obvious gap between science-based books written for physicians, urologists, and health care providers and easier-to-read books written for the general public. Only a smattering of the books on interstitial cystitis (IC) that are available today provide suggestions on how to implement daily life changes to help heal IC. Most, if not all, stop short of a multi-tiered approach, and very few recognize the pivotal role of the patient (or IC sufferer) in the healing journey. This book fills in the missing gaps.To schedule individual self-advocacy consults or to engage Dr. Alexis professionally, please www.drtracyalexis.com or drtracyalexis@gmail.com.
This book was extremely specific to the author's own experience. Helpful bits: she details how to advocate for yourself as far as insurance providers and doctors when they are not listening to you (she had more knowledge about her condition than the doctors she saw "in network") and were not following the "do no harm" part of their job.
The longest chapter was about very specific supplement regimens, and beverage consumption.
I did like her opinion on support groups for IC- basically saying how the tone will be set by the loudest person in the room and anyone who has experienced relief will make everyone else feel bad, so the general vibe will be depressing. That's true of online message boards too.
Still, I'm grateful to the author for sharing her experience and detailing the wisdom she'd gained through living with this condition.
