A Skilled Socialite

Gloriana Blakely has finally gone too far. To the distress of her parents, this exquisitely beautiful debutante refuses to settle for anything less than the life - and the husband - she deserves. As punishment for her latest defiance, she is banished to her cousin's estate in Yorkshire for the autumn, where Society is barren and her childhood nemesis is close at hand.

A Seductive Scoundrel

Rakish and handsome, Lord Alex Somers has finally completed his studies at Oxford, prolonged by a healthy amount of philandering and mischief. Unfortunately, he is now faced with the dire task of having to actually do something with his life. He returns to his family estate to ponder his future, only to discover a beautiful guest has arrived, and taken it upon herself to throw a lavish country party in his honor!

Secrets, Spies, and Seductions

Alex and Gloriana can't seem to avoid butting heads, with the tension between them increasing by the day. As the festivities begin, the two find themselves unwittingly pulled into a dangerous dance among the distinguished and powerful guests within the walls of Somerton. A deadly game of cat and mouse is overshadowed only by the building desire between the unlikely pair, as the scandalous secret weaves a web of seduction around them both.

Ava Devlin writes sweet and steamy Regency romances. She lives in New York City and believes that diving into fantasies of 19th century England provides an excellent reprieve from hectic metropolitan life.

Ava has been writing love stories for as long as she can remember, and spent her teen years swooning over classic romance novels. In her 20s, she moved to Britain and spent a year exploring the sights, experiences, and history that have made the Regency era such an enduring time of fascination and romance. Afterward, she spent several months living the life of a governess as an au pair in the French Alps, which only heightened the romance of her time abroad.

Slightly better than book 1. There’s a bit of mystery and the hero’s life is threatened, but it’s not the main focus. Three house party guests (who probably secretly work for the government) suspects that the hero may be a traitor since he’s in possession of important documents. One of them wants to kill the hero before he can deliver those papers into enemy hands.

My review :

When a débutante banned ito the country side decides to organize a party for a returning family’s son, she make sure it is the perfect gathering to arrange her own match ...

It took me some pages to accommodate to Mrs Ava Devlin’s writing , she has a very particular style but once I settled in the book, the story began to fly by.
It is easy to love Alex, he is fun, fair and kind, he is more a cameo role than an alpha, often wondering what to do of his life outside his roguish attitude. Yet he also does not rush voluntarily into danger, trying to be circumspect if possible.
When Gloriana is more complex, and each layer shows a different aspect of her, the ladder climber as she plans her own union , the friend as she is loyal to the fault to hers but also her taunting and jibing sides and her long feud with her school nemesis. She is so ambivalent, attracted to Alex but afraid to give in to passion when it could derail everything she has planned.
Everything shows how imperfect she is, ready to sacrifice her own happiness to re-enter in the good graces of the parents she loves.
Those flaws make her human, she has decisions to take, but when she is unable to make the choice every romance reader would decide, it is circumstances which finely give a helping hand.
Gloriana is passion but coolness mixed, why she unsettled me, one moment she runs in the arms of Alex, then talk about her impeding engagement with an other man.
Still, it was an entertaining tale with a spy/sleuth side, the right thread to get Alex and Gloriana together and watch how they manage their relationship and the attraction they feel for one another.
4.5 stars

Gloriana Blakely has turned down one too many suitors for her parents’ liking and now they’ve sent her off to spend some time with her cousin in remote Yorkshire. She’s decidedly less than thrilled at being banished from society and being forced to share the estate with her girlhood nemesis who is now her cousin’s sister-in-law.

Alex Somers has at last finished his Oxford degree, in much more time than it should have taken him, but now he must make a decision about what to do with his life. With nowhere else to go, he returns to his brother’s estate in Yorkshire to figure out his next move, only to discover that a lovely guest has entrenched herself in the family library and taken up his cause by planning an elaborate country house party to celebrate the completion of his studies.

Alex and Gloriana disagree at every turn, building a decidedly less than unfriendly tension between them. They find themselves thrown together at every turn, especially when they uncover a potentially treasonous plot unfolding during the party, and the two are brought together by a secret they’ve accidentally overheard, even as their mutual attraction begins to blossom into something more.

I was unsure about this one because I really couldn't stand Gloriana as a supporting character in the previous book and for a while at the beginning of this story, it seemed she still hadn’t matured. Thankfully, though she is still rather whimsical, this Gloriana at least demonstrates some growth and development. In fact, she and Alex both had some growing up to do and they seemed to be a good influence on each other as both demonstrated a good amount of development between the beginning and end of the book. I loved the house party setting here and I thought the tension between the two MCs was well-drawn. The mystery/spy element was a bit thin, but I think this twist sets the rest of the series up to be quite interesting, especially as secondary characters begin pairing off, and I’ll look forward to continuing.

I can’t say the main character of Gloriana was entirely likeable. Yes, she was a good organiser for the house party but there was something about her attitude that I couldn’t take to. She also had a strange relationship with her parents. Alex Somers was a known rascal but he was unsure of what his future would hold, now he had finished at Oxford. He also had issues with his mother. There were a number of interesting secondary characters, a mystery concerning spies to solve and some very passionate scenes. I did enjoy it and would be interested to read Alex’s sister’s story. I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I prefer dominant Heroes, and this H isn't. He's charming, doesn't need money but as 2nd son, can't see his way forward as a man. The h seemed to be all fluff, but her talents are hidden and she's really a tiger. She's determined that he is her future, and she very sweetly ensures what their future will be. he adored her and I liked this book very much on the 2nd read. And in the 3rd book in the series, we see this couple again, living up to her vision.

A delightful story that takes you in at the first page and doesn't let go until the end. A debutante can only turn down so many marriage proposals until her parents banish her to the country. At least that was the case for Gloriana Blakely as she traveled with her cousin Rose to her Yorkshire estate. What would she do with her time? She was waiting for the perfect man, could they not understand that?
Luckily she found a task of planning a party for Rose's brother in law who had just graduated from Oxford and would be home to start planning his future. Glory was in her element planning the country party that would be a great surprise for Alex.
Unfortunately her and Alex's first meeting was him sneaking in a window and Glory knocking him senseless with a book and screaming! Not a good start for these two but it got better!
A building, sizzling attraction, humor and a mystery drive this story to a satisfying conclusion!

Thoroughly entertaining

Ava Devlin revisits the scandal-bedeviled Somers family to tell the tale of Alex Sommers, the scalawag younger brother of the stuffed shirt Viscount Gideon Sommers. Alex is a charmer, a party animal, and, when not bedding willing local wives and widows, a student act Oxford. Graduation sees him forced to leave Oxford and his last paramour behind, as he heads back to his less-than-approving family. Coincidentally, accomplished socialite Gloriana Blakely, who has fallen out of favor with her folks over one too many rejected marriage proposals, is a Somers family guest. She makes it her mission to give Alex a "come-out" party to introduce him to those of the ton who might help him determine a future path for himself. Neither their scandalous first meeting, nor the subsequent party shenanigans, nor the bizarre suspicions of espionage and the threat on Alex's life, can derail the train of Glory's growing love for him, and his for her. Family secrets, old school friendships, and marriage machinations all figure in this charming tale of growing up and becoming who, and whose, each one is meant to be. Delightful characters, major and minor, and clever plotting are the best of this very steamy Regency romance. Five sparkling stars!

This is an OK historical romance, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 3 stars from me.

I would recommend you read the prequel to this series (The Dreamer and the Debutante) before reading this series. It will explain a great deal about why Gloriana dreads seeing Heloise. You can read this series without it, but you will enjoy the series more if you read the prequel. The prequel is available for free from a link the author provides at the end of this book.

Alex is likable, but I had trouble believing he was ready for a committed relationship. He was such a man wh***, who was all about having a good time and shirking responsibility -- I didn't buy that he would suddenly change so much.

I didn't like Gloriana much in the prequel or in the first book. She just seemed like a spoiled brat, who was kind of a mean girl to Heloise. She was better in this story, as she seemed to have finally grown up and gotten past her mean girl behavior. I still didn't like her all that much, though -- I just couldn't get past her earlier spoiled brat behavior. I also found it hard to believe that she would marry Alex, since he was not titled and would not improve her social standing, because she was still fixated on her status in society.

I did like that Gloriana and Heloise finally got over their teenage feud. They had both behaved childishly, and finally realized that.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Starring Gloriana Blakely and Alex Somers

I don’t usually like young Heroes, just because I prefer them a little seasoned. So I was really worried about Alex because he was straight out of school, and still figuring out who or what he’s going to become. But I started loving him and his character more and more as I read on. Totally a swoon-worthy hero who doesn’t take himself too seriously.

“He really screwed the pooch when he’d finished the damned degree, hadn’t he? Now he’d actually had to accomplish something to retain any amount of respectability.” ~Alex

Gloriana is also searching for her place in life. But her future plans are put on hold when her parents banishes her to the country. To keep herself from being bored, she plans a party for her cousin’s brother in law, Alex. Their first meeting was funny, albeit a little painful. Gloriana, is witty, vulnerable, and a little stubborn in her thinking... but you see her change and grow as you read on. I really liked her and her tenacious spirit.

Together, Gloriana and Alex were a delicious couple. The scenes when they are together are a scorcher... when Gloriana accidentally sees him with his shirt off, I think I blushed a little myself. I thoroughly enjoyed these two. And cheered for them when they reached their HEA.

I love Ava Devlin, she writes relationship scenes very well. I loved the scene between Alex and his mother. That actually got me tearing up a bit. I love how she handled Gloriana and Heloise making peace with each other. I was expecting a catty showdown between these two, but got something dignified that showed they both matured since their finishing school days. I love the interactions between the Somers siblings, and between Gloriana and her cousin, Rose.

Ava Devlin is on my “New Favorite Authors of 2019” list. She is firmly on my keeper shelf. I love the Somerton series and I freaken CAN NOT WAIT for Heloise’s story!!!

I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily reviewed it and the comments are 100% my own.

My star system:
4 stars: Book was great... loved the characters... will definitely be re-reading this story... but didn’t make me cry.

Gloriana Blakely could navigate any manner of ball, soiree or social gathering with all the grace and elegance that her upbringing taught her. She has turned down offer after offer for her hand in marriage in order to make the perfect match. Now that her plans are about to come to fruition and she believes the gentleman most suited to her is about to make an offer she must leave London to get away from her parents who are angry with her for rejecting a suitor her father had arranged.

She decides to accept her cousin Rose's offer to spend time with her and her husband Gideon (whom Gloriana had rejected his suite) and their family. As they are traveling to Rose's home, Rose tells of Gideon's younger brother Alex who will be home soon now that his studies at Oxford are over. Rose suggests that Gloriana assist her with a celebration for him and inviting some upstanding gentry to give Alex a chance to make friends and decide what he wants to do with his life.

When Gloriana finally meets Alex she is not impressed with his actions. He did sneak in through a window after all, startling her so much that she hit him in the face with the ledger that she'd been keeping track of the expenses for his celebration in. But it doesn't take Alex long to charm Gloriana and she finds herself enjoying his company. Alex is enchanted with Gloriana's angelic beauty and is falling in love with her. Gloriana, however, is still set on achieving her plans of the perfect match, even though her intended future husband does not bring forth the desire she feels by just being in Alex's presence.

When Alex's life is threatened, he and Gloriana set out to find out who the culprits are and what it is they think he had stolen and brought with him from Oxford. Will the pair be able to find out what it is before the villain's decide to end Alex's life?

I thought this was a very good book. It was witty and quite fun to read. There are a few sexual scenes but nothing overly erotic. All in all, the book flows very well throughout and I do recommend it.

I thought this book was lighthearted, steamy, and cute. I read the first book in the series a while back and must admit I didn't remember it that well, so I carried over no images/prejudices of the characters. Although the H and h are both flawed (the h seems a rather self-centered social-climber, while the H sleeps only with married women), they had great chemistry together and each improved the other, which is what I enjoy seeing in a romance novel. I also thought the author did a nice job of making them multidimensional. Because the h is the epitome of the Society miss, she is adept at arranging events and helping others (such as the H) with their ambitions. The H is always up for a good time, so he gets along with pretty much everyone. Instead of being the typical arrogant noble, he is easygoing and frequently underestimates himself. I found him very likable.

One of the best aspects of this book was the humor. A reviewer complained about the first 30%, but I thought it moved along quickly and was breezy fun. The scene of intrigue at the ball was subtly steamy, and the first love scene between H/h was cute and sexy.

There is a bit of a mystery here, and although I do wish the storyline had been a more cloak-and-daggerish, I thought the revelation about where the items were was clever. It was unrealistic that H and h wouldn't have recognized the identities of the conspirators talking in the library, though.

I thought the ending was a slight letdown. After the drama with h's parents and her reluctance to upset them, it all smooths over very quickly, and there definitely should have been an epilogue.

Overall, though, this is a sexy, breezy historical romance that makes an ideal "lazy day" read. I am planning to read more by this author.

Young Hero and Complex Heroine

I have read several books by Ava Devlin. I have enjoyed most of them. This one was a slightly mixed bag for me. I love some of the humor, especially with the hero. He came across as less of a scoundrel than a young man trying to figure out his way in life, albeit in a mildly rakish way. But I found him to be utterly charming, as the heroine ultimately did. I liked his unique sense of self; the sections written from his perspective are a delight. We don't usually see heroes who are so young, fresh out of university, so it was fun to see a slightly more youthful hero. I thought that the heroine was particularly well drawn, with layers that appeared slowly over time. I like it when a character develops before my eyes like that. The meet-cute of the couple was particularly fun, if not so good for the hero! The book is definitely steamy but not erotica. Just about right if you like your historical romances on the steamy side. My only issue with this book is that I thought it was overwritten in parts, with too much or inappropriate description. For instance, would a woman actually describe her own eyes as “lovely”? Show, don't tell. Aside from this issue, which did persist throughout the book, I did find this to be a delightful read.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.

Hang on, the story is worth it

I struggled with this book for the first 30%. We met Glory in book 1, a frivolous, spoiled brat. We also met Alexander, a man who continually skips school to carouse the Continent. Two years after book 1 ends, and a month (and 25%) into this story, they're still the same. No plot, no character development (key to romances), and no romance. Ugh.

But then the romance starts, and right on its heels comes mystery and intrigue. Finally! And it's an amazing story! On par with books 1 and 3 (I read them out of order). It has character growth for main and secondary characters, plot twists, foreshadowing for book 3. All in all, once I got to the party's ball, I couldn't put the book down. And it did not end as I had supposed (though of course it has its happily ever after).

Do I need to read books before this one: no
Would I read more of the series: finished it already
Cliffhanger: no
POSSIBLE TRIGGERS
Sex: multiple scenes
Language: 0 F words, 27 Lord's name in vain, 1 S word
Violence: threat of murder, held at knife point, breaking and entering

FAVORITE QUOTE
He must have nodded off here and there while attempting to be somber and brooding, because before he knew it, the sun was rudely rolling its fat arse into the window pane directly opposite his favorite eyeball. [I read this after getting ~4.5 hours of sleep]

Forgiveness seems rather more like a process than an event to me.

Gloriana has been sent to her cousin's house int he country after refusing to marry the man her father has picked out for her. If she marries at all, she wants to marry for love. When she learns that her cousin's BIL will be returning home after finishing university, she decides to spend her time in the country, planning his welcome home party. She didn't plan on the two of them butting heads every time they interacted...

Alex is finally finished his studies at Oxford, but doesn't know what he wants to do with his life as he doesn't have any real skills. When he arrives home, he meets the vexing Gloriana, sho is planning a party for him. Even though they keep butting heads, they both find themselves attracted to one another. And during a moment of indiscretion, they overhear people threatening Alex's life.

Can they find the people that are after Alex? What are they going to do about this unwanted attraction?

I really enjoyed Alex and Gloriana's story! This is the second book in the series and while it could be read as a standalone, I recommend reading book 0.5 and book 1. It will make it that much more enjoyable. I really watching these two fall in love. The bantering between them had me laughing out loud. I'm so excited for the next book in the series, so that we can finally see Heloise and Callum get their HEA!

The Scoundrel and the Socialite is the second book in The Somerton Scandals. We were first introduced to Gloriana Blakely in the first book when her parents arranged a marriage for her, and she refused to marry the gentleman they choose. Instead her cousin, Rose, married the gentleman and her parents have tried to arrange another marriage. When she refuses the match, she is banished to her cousin’s estate where there are no members of Society. Lord Alex Somers has finally finished his studies at Oxford but has no idea of what he wants to do with his life. Gloriana decides that the way for her to avoid boredom during her banishment is to throw a house party to honor Alex. Things don’t go smoothly between the two but when they become involved solving a mystery, they begin to realize their true feelings. I really enjoyed the first book and I didn’t really care for Gloriana in that book. I am still not a big fan of hers, but she has become more likable. She didn’t seem to grow in character over the two books. I wish she would have become a little less selfish.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Gloriana Blakely refused one too many suitors chosen by her father, so her parents sent her to spend some time with her cousin Rose and her husband Gideon at their country estate in Yorkshire where she fears she will be bored to death. Lord Alex Somers, Gideon’s younger brother, has finally completed his studies at Oxford and has some life decisions to make. Gloriana uses his return to arrange a party for him. Before long, Alex charms Gloriana and she finds herself enjoying his company.

Things take a turn when Alex is suspected of being a traitor, and the two of them join forces to find out who the real culprits are to prove his innocence. Will they solve the mystery in time to keep Alex safe? Will they finally act on their attraction to each other?

This was a very well-written story with intriguing characters and a touch of mystery. The pacing was perfect and the story line kept the reader’s attention. Grab your copy and enjoy the goings-on with Alex and Gloriana. Will they find their HEA?

I had such a brilliant time reading this book, truly. Beautifully written and so engaging, I couldn't help reading it all in one sitting! This book even reminded me of my love for historical romance~ It's probably best to read The Somerton Scandals books in order but, this being my first Ava Devlin book, I was able to read this as a standalone without feeling lost. (That said, I do plan to go back and read the first book! ;D)

The hero and heroine of this story are such a great pair, and so perfect for one another! Alex and Gloriana are just lovely, both individually and together~ They're charming and relatable, with flaws and insecurities that make them easy to connect with. I just loved all of their scenes together! The touch of mystery and intrigue in the story was also handled well, and I had fun guessing at how everything would unfold.

I'm glad this is a series because I so want to see what happens with Heloise, Tia, and Nell!

What a lovely story.
I really enjoyed Ava Devlin's style of writing as it had a natural flow and the plot was easy to follow and well developed.
The characters are very likeable and believable. Alex is charming but
somewhat lost until he meets Gloriana, she anchors him bringing out the best of him. Gloriana is lovely but spoilt. As the story unfolds she realizes that the price of making a favourable match that society would be impressed with is one she can't afford. She becomes a much nicer person when she gets a grip on her true values. There are a lot of supporting characters. All of them are fully developed into their own individuality setting the stage for the books that I hope will follow. You will find romance, chemistry, intrigue, betrayal, angst and humor in the pages of this book. I recommend this book for adult readers as there are descriptive intimate moments.
I received an advance copy of this book and I willingly leave my honest review.

ONE SPECTACULAR TREASURE!!!
Swizzle sticks! Ava cleared the plot, drilled the well and ushered the oil, while chaos and mayhem trudged the weather. Charting a new course, scoping the skies and mapping the seas. Producing amazing scenario's that punch dead center with such intensity and precision, propels this jewel into a tailspin with astonishing results. Drama, intrigue, secrets, spies, enemies, danger and suspense mounts as tension spirals, thrusting this baby to life spectacularly. Add turmoil, distress and dark nefarious deeds and you have one intense rollercoaster ride. The chemistry sizzles from the pages and suck you in so deeply until you feel the heat and electricity thrumming through your veins. The personalities are well matched and blended. The characters and scenes are written with such realism and depth it makes for one magnificent experience. Remarkable job Ava, thanks for sharing this little jewel with us.

I was honoured to read this as part of Ava Devlin ARC team and this is my honest review.

Gloriana Blakely or Glory has ice blonde curls, porcelain skin, lovely blue eyes.
Goes to stay with her cousin Rose and her husband Gideon Somers who is a handsome viscount and his family for about a month in a place called Somerton.
Gloriana finds herself organising a small party on behalf of Alex - Gideon's brother as a way to say congratulations for being an Oxford graduate.
Alex Somers is a cad has no qualms with having affairs with married women as a result means him and Glory meet in unusual circumstances.

This book has plenty of intriguing twists in the plot romantically, spys and espionage and lots of things happening to other characters not just the main characters.
I loved this book once you re-train to read in old fashioned language I just could not put it down.

scandalous, together
by JUDE

This book is the second book in the Sommerton scandelous series, by the author.
It is the first by Ava, for me to read.

Gloriana is to be wed, however Gloriana and her parents have different views.

WOW! Soooo many emotions swirl through you as you read this story by Ava Devlin. The Scoundrel and the Socialite is the second book in The Somerton Scandalous. With a magnificent cast of characters who all have wonderful personalities and they become very endearing as the story progresses. Alex and Glory find themselves on a rollercoaster rider of sizzling passion with spies looking for hidden papers, a soon-to-be fiance, A few giggles, and trials and tribulations that will keep you sitting on the edge of your seat. Come revisit old friends that you haven't visited for a while and meet new ones. Ava has outdone herself with this novel. I can not wait to see if Heloise and Callum's reunites in the next story!!

Most Unique

It’s not often I read a book where the Hero has a “shock” of red hair. I loved this book and can’t wait to read Tia, Nell and Peter’s stories. And I’m most curious about Heloise’s story to find about just who is this Callum fellow is and what he’s been up to. I’m so glad I can read their story now. And hopefully Nell’s story will explain more about Bess’s connection to the spies. The book did have sexy times however to me they were done nicely without being too graphic. The only fault I found with the book was where Glory was so resigned to her fate after she fell in love with Alex. I will definitely read this one again.

This is the first book I have read by Ava Devlin and I really enjoyed it. She writes a story which had me so involved in the story I felt part of it. She is now on my to be read Author list.
This story is about Alex and Gloriana (Glory) who meet and get to know each other at a stay at Alex’s brother and Glory’s cousin’s house. I feel Alex and Gloriana have a chemistry and a desire they cannot deny. Mixed in this love story is a mystery, which I have to admit I did not know what the outcome was - I was surprised.

Another good story in the Somerton Scandals series. There is a little mystery and some scandalous behavior. I have to say that I really did not care for Gloriana at the beginning of the story. Why she held onto the grudge with Heloise throughout the whole story is beyond me. That was a plot point that I found irritating. I did like her a more as the book went on when I found out why she was down and then I understood her a little better. Alex and Gloriana do not seem to be a perfect match. Alex was more likeable and I felt sorry for him most of the time. Their interactions were steamy and you can feel the tension.

I received a complimentary copy from the author.

Caught up in conspiracy

Alex and Gloriana meet as Alex climbs through the window of an unused study in his ancestral home. Thinking it to be empty, he’s not prepared to find a book wielding young lady ready and willing to protect herself. A black eye and explanations later, peace is restored, but when they accidentally over hear a conversation between three people who’s voices they don’t recognize, the realization that Alex’s life is at risk draws them together in a race to uncover those involved in the plot.
A wonderfully entertaining plot with quite a fun cast of characters and lots of love!

Gloriana Blakely may be banished, but she’s not backing down, not when there’s a party to plan and a rakish Lord to torment. Lord Alex Somers, fresh from Oxford and full of charm (and questionable ambition), meets his match in the sharp-tongued debutante who turns his estate into a social battlefield.

Between stolen glances, scandalous secrets, and a country house crawling with spies, The Scoundrel and the Socialite delivers banter, seduction, and just enough danger to keep the pages turning. It’s witty, wickedly fun, and delightfully steamy. Gloriana and Alex don’t just spark, they combust. Book 1 was great, and Book 2 was just as good, now I'm off to read Book 3!
