The Peashooter Society's Plan (Mismatched Mail-Order Brides Book 1) JUST REMEMBER—THOSE LADIES’ PEASHOOTERS ARE LOADED
The story is the prequel to the beginning of a new series and is a spin-off from the Grooms with Honor and Brides with Grit Series. When six of the elderly ladies, better known as the Peashooter Society get together, it is to come up with a plan. They need to bring in single men to fill vacancies in several businesses, but also to help several of the young single ladies find husbands. After a discussion, an ad will be sent to the Kansas City Star.
“To the classified advertising department. Please place this notice in your newspaper one time. It should read: “Opportunity for six single men, under the age thirty, to make their permanent home in Clear Creek, Kansas. If chosen, each man would receive employment, housing, and a wife. Please send a letter about your employment skills and background, plus two letters of recommendation, one being from your clergy. Send your correspondence to Mrs. Kaitlyn Reagan in care of the Clear Creek, Kansas post office. If your letter is chosen after review, you will be notified to visit.”
Six young men will all recently mustered out of military service and be onboard the train when it is robbed, but also experience an explosion in the mailroom. Letters are scattered, and that is how they find the one from Kaitlyn Reagan. Now, Barton, Gordon, and Squires Miller, along with Peter Gehring, Tobin Billings, and Wesley Preston have shown up in Clear Creek, Kansas to answer the ad and plan for their future.
“She placed an advertisement saying she needed six young men who would each receive employment, housing, and a wife.” Wesley went ahead and announced.”
“Oh, Deuteronomy! What is my mother and the Peashooter Society up to now?” –Angus Reagan
Amelia Changes her Fellow (The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides Book 2) OH, HORRORS! THE PEASHOOTERS WERE MATCHMAKING
The story is the first in a new series and is a spin-off from the Grooms with Honor and Brides with Grit Series. When six of the elderly ladies, better known as the Peashooter Society get together, it is to come up with a plan. Now it involves getting the six prospected new grooms to meet the six potential new brides. The story is the first of the matches.
Leave it to the Peashooters to not only come up with the plan but to want to tell each of the men what job they will do and what lady they should be matched to. How will the men and those ladies feel about being manipulated? Well, they come up with their own plans and implement them.
“By the look on the girls’ faces, I’d say it was a positive thing. They weren’t happy when they left the hotel after our group meal, but they have smiles on their faces after leaving the men now. I think the girls will switch if they want to. They are intelligent modern women.”
Barton and Amelia are neither happy with the first match of the Peashooter, and neither are any of the other men and ladies. Their get together and parlor games seem to confirm that. It doesn’t take long for Barton and Amelia to become a couple, and everyone else to see it is the right move. Even her mother agrees.
“Marriage is a lifetime commitment, so be sure you do marry the right man.”
The story includes Barton having to learn to step back and allow the other five men to make their way in Clear Creek and to start courting the woman that suits them best. His promise to the men when they were just boys has held true for over twenty years. With the help of the Peashooters, they are in the same town together and starting a new phase in their lives.
“The Peashooter Society does seem to work in divine and mysterious ways. Yes, the Peashooter Society’s plan had certainly changed their routine this fall.”
“Not everyone wants a mate, but they do need a sense of family or community. I do hope we’ve provided that opportunity to the six of you.” –Kaitlyn to Barton
“He released himself from one promise today and made another. And it was the right thing to do.”
The men have slowly started finding their new lives, potential spouses, and homes. Barton is happy working as the new Blacksmith and somewhat overwhelmed with the opulence of his new home. The obligation to the men has changed with his courtship of Amelia that is moving toward marriage. How will Amelia and Barton be able to marry soon and keep it a surprise? With the help of the other potential brides.
“The Pistols, as the younger group of women had named themselves, had outdrawn the Peashooters.”
“Well done, ladies. Even if the bride added her own twist to surprise us. One couple married. Five to go.”
Avalee Exchanges her Fiancé (The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides Book 3) I BET THE PEASHOOTER SOCIETY IS UP TO SOMETHING
The story is the third in a new series and is a spin-off from the Grooms with Honor and Brides with Grit Series. When six of the elderly ladies, better known as the Peashooter Society, get together, it is to come up with a plan. Now it involves getting the six prospected new grooms to meet the six potential new brides. The story is the match of Avalee Paulson and Gordon Miller.
Avalee Paulson works with Dr. Pansy and has no intention of marrying, or at least anytime soon. She even blurts out that she already has a fiancé, but the truth of it is, she has an unwanted admirer who she is trying to avoid.
Gordon Miller isn’t sure he wants to marry at this time and has only gone along with the plan Barton comes up with to stay together in Clear Creek, Kansas. Having been part of a group his entire adult life, does he want to stay here or move on in life? At first, the job he is placed in doesn’t suit him, and he feels nothing for the match the Peashooters placed him with.
“I’d prefer to stay single, and I need a partner—so to speak—to stay out of the matchmaking. If you’re inclined to not walk down the aisle to say the wedding vows yourself, maybe we could form a pact.”
“What would it be like to have someone to love and protect her all the time? No, even though Gordon’s hand gave her a sense of protection, she needed to guard her heart and body. Gordon being her fake fiancé, was the best plan to keep her safe and single.”
The story will have the Taylors being wishy-washy about what they want to do now that they are getting older. The first plan was to open a smaller housewares store and let someone else run the mercantile and yet, they can’t agree on what to sell. Gordon will prove that he can be a good clerk, but even he is flustered with the indecisiveness of the Taylors.
Avalee convinces Gordon that she will act like his fiancé and confesses that she has had unwanted advances by a man her parent's trust. She believes this will give both her and Gordon the out they need not be caught in the marriage trap. But what happens when others interfere and try to help Avalee and Gordon along in realizing that they were really meant to be together? Will fate finally fall in place with the Taylors so that Gordon and Avalee can make plans for a future?
“Remember you’re planning your next fifty years. Be patient.”
I enjoyed this clean historical and the cast of character and social interaction. I could have done with less of the repeated back story that was outlined in the prequel and first book, which encompasses the first quarter of this second story.
Maggie Shifts her Gent (The Mismatched Mail-Order Brides Book 4) KEEP FATE IN MIND IN THE DAYS AHEAD, BECAUSE THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON
The story is the fourth in a new series and is a spin-off from the Grooms with Honor and Brides with Grit Series. When six of the elderly ladies, better known as the Peashooter Society, get together, it is to come up with a plan. Now it involves getting the six prospected new grooms to meet the six potential new brides. The story is the match between Maggie Brenner and Peter Gehring.
Maggie Brenner is a mothering soul, having been the oldest daughter of the eight children adopted by Sarah and Marcus Brenner. She has a soft spot for children and has even contemplated working with orphans.
Peter Gehring lost his parents in a house fire and was adopted, along with his five friends in the same town. He was adopted by a tailor and his wife, who taught him the trade. He also served in multiple capacities in the army where he worked well as a barber. Now that he is in Clear Creek, he is hoping to take over the barbershop.
While the Peashooters tried to match up the six men and women, they also attempted to assign each man a job, rather than learning what they were best suited doing. At least some of the men in town will listen and allow them to do a job best suited for each of them.
The plot will have an emergency train whistle to alert the townsfolk of a dire situation. A tree limb has crashed into one of the passenger cars, injuring many, and even claiming a life. Two women from the Orphanage in New York were traveling with children to find homes and had three remaining orphans, siblings that had not been adopted. With the help of the townspeople and the Brenner sisters, they will watch the children, but the little boy will cling to Peter. This will be their story.
“Maggie’s reason for being in town was now clear. Those children needed her.”
“Peter stood, balancing a child in each arm, and walked to the table. He never guessed when he opened the barbershop this morning he’d be taking care of two children this evening, but that’s how fast life can change. As an orphan himself, he knew their pain and confusion.”
With the injured Ann Beasley, a temporary housing situation will be set up off the barbershop for her and the three children, with Maggie helping them. But, the agency is sending others to pick up the three children in a weeks time. Then what will happen? Will the plight of Christian, Bonita, and baby Alice be the final push that Peter and Maggie need to commit to each other?
“You realize your barbershop and apartment are going to be filled with crying children, people’s outcast furniture, and too many busy-bodies for the next week?
“Yes, Maggie was the Brenner sister he’d like to marry because he was falling in love with the kind, giving woman.”
“Peter never guessed when he and his five friends decided to take a chance in Clear Creek, Kansas, that he’d find a job, home, community, a loving wife, and instant family.”
I'm really enjoying this series and getting to know all the characters. I enjoyed each book and each couples story. I look forward to reading about the other couples the Peashooters are trying to match.
