RANO AND PHULO

Rate this book
Two young women.
A country divided.
Spanning three decades, this is the story of Rano and Phulo as they pick up the torn threads and reknit the fabric of their lives from the trauma of the Partition and its aftermath to the latter half of the twentieth century. The exodus of refugees broke the regional beliefs and habits, and brought about an integration of their culture into the Provincialism existing in the India of 1947. It made a cocktail of diversity into a kind of proud unity. The Provincialism of Pre-Partition India gave away to a" Pan-India Indianness”.

Rano and Phulo were a product of this churning. Though poles apart in habits and culture, they came together and became a part of the tapestry of the unique design being woven, making India one whole creative piece of art and culture that captivates the imagination of the world today.

About the author

Shukla Lal

3 books1 follower
Shukla spent her childhood in the folds of a close knit Punjabi family from Amritsar. Her father’s transferable job, took her family to Lahore. After a fortuitous escape from the troubles of Partition, her father’s postings gave her a Bharat Darshan, before eventually reaching Calcutta (now Kolkata) during its neo Independence heydays.

After a schooling in Amritsar, Madras (now Chennai) and Ooty, Shukla completed her BA, BT (now B. Ed) from Loreto College, Calcutta and then promptly found the love of her life and got busy with raising a family. Her life’s mission is teaching and care giving for children with special needs.

Joyful wit and multilingual expressiveness is a family trait Shukla (now 81) inherited from her parents and shares with her accomplished siblings.

Her choice of stories and writing style could best be understood from her own words “I am a romantic and an idealist by nature and find true romance scattered everywhere irrespective of class, creed, religion, nationality or age”
