The Devil's Apprentice

Rate this book
Demons and angels aren't real. They just can't be. They're supposed to be dumb stories in really old books. So why was Alex seeing them walking around on the streets of London? Alex began to wonder if he was losing his mind. Maybe he was hallucinating? Except, hallucinations couldn’t throw you into cars like you were nothing more than an annoying little bug, could they? Because that was exactly what that angel did to him.

It all began to make sense when Andrew, Alex's estranged father, called him one day to tell him that he’d done something terrible. Something that was going to change Alex's life forever.

This book is an urban fantasy that adds a twist to the traditional good versus bad narrative regarding angels and demons.

For what this book is (urban fantasy with a lot of sex) it has some good points, but they are largely overwhelmed by how much of an idiot the MC is. I understand the "fish-out-of-water" learning curve, but this guy is just a douche, the voice in his head is right. For my money, the MC would never have survived his first real fight, and definitely none of the several following ones where he freezes in the middle of the action.

This is a cardinal sin in a book for me: make the MC unlikeable. He seemed to have improved by the end, but it was a painful experience getting there. The supporting characters were what carried him (and the story) to that point, but it definitely lowered my overall experience of the book.

First of all the tittle is completely missinforming, there is no apprenticeship in here, and we don't see enough of the Devil either, oh it shows here and there but it does nothing for the plot. Either way this book does have an interesting word building, and it could have created good characters. But the details on the novel betray the plot. They are there but don't mesh well with what the author is trying to portray. For example the Demon Hunters are supposed to be an organization to police Demons on earth, but they don't act like an organized entity at all, is like the devil took anyone willing to sell their soul made an upgradde on their body and cut them loose on earth to do as they wish, not what they should, I am surprised there haven't been more incidents before MC shows up. Besides I have to ask myself if the villains got a discount on V-necks on this universe, every male that was antagonist to Alex at some point was wearing a V-neck, I even thought Satan would show up from his prison in one as well. It is a good read, but not as great as it could.

It's okay

Definitely a different twist on an old story. I will read book two. Just because I can't let it end on a cliffhanger. Read the blurb and make your own decision

Good premise

This book has a great premise. Patrick appears to be a good writer, but he needs a better editor. There are a couple of spots where action looses focus or he puts a character in two places or used the same name for both characters. Made it a little hard to track. I did like that his protagonist doesn't really come into his full potential until the final scene. Good change of pace from you normal harem lit where the bad ass-ness starts early and gets outrageous by the end.

Enjoyed

A coming of age story with a twist. A different version of heaven and hell but was very enjoyable. Will definitely buy the next book in this series.

A much more polished and flowing book than book one. Still nothing Earth shattering but a decent read I will get book three when it comes out
