I did a pretty damn good job until a woman was rolled into my ER seven months ago. She should have been dead on arrival. Under the bright exam lights, strapped to a gurney, she whispered her final words. I shouldn't have leaned in.
My world was changed forever.
Bars were my hunting ground. Drink after drink. Man after man. I fed the eight-legged monster that lived inside of me. Or hundreds of monsters. They tended to pour out of me when I gave in.
I almost gave myself over to the urges. That was until I met them: a quirky alpha wolf shifter with a pocket-sized monkey, a fallen angel with a mermaid obsession, and the devil that had more baggage than LAX.
Will they help me fight the darkness that lurks inside of me, or will they let it consume me?
Reverse harem, full-length novel Standalone Multiple POV Medium burn, 18+ recommended M/M touching Foul language
Although this is a standalone novel, it is a spinoff of my Celestial Academy trilogy, which features Lucifer as the father of the female main character. The original Widow, Alaric, and Kai all make appearances in the series as well. Check out my author page to read Ascend (Celestial Academy Book 1).
Mary sue goody two shoes doctor gets bit by spider she-demon and is compelled to eat a man once a month.
*Alexa, play Man Eater*
You think this would make her badass but it doesn’t. She’s painfully ordinary and boring. But ofc her milkshake brings all the boys to the yard anyhow. 🙄
She meets three hot supes in a bar who, for reasons unknown, become utterly obsessed with her.
Lucifer is a beta who cries after sex. 😐
Kai is a fallen angel who acts anything but fallen (sorry—he used to sell pot once…which I guess makes him bad???…pot is legal in my home state and has a lot of health benefits, so this just made him seem super vanilla to me and her reaction painted her as self righteous and stuck up) and he has a Monkey friend for some reason who halfway through the book just disappears then reappears to save the day. (??? Why a monkey??? Idk feels gimmicky.)
And Alaric is a wolf shifter (alpha ofc 🙄) who can’t take a mate due to vows he made at one point and is obsessed with mermaids for, again, reasons unknown.
This book is nonsensical. No one’s motivations are believable. Random Shit is thrown in to make it “interesting” but none of it makes sense.
The three H’s are supposed to kill rouge demons and they let her live for reasons that are never explained other than the fact that she’s human.
They very quickly become utterly obsessed with her. For no reason. There is no progression where we see why.
Lucifer has trust issues for a good reason yet he overcomes this in a snap and is 100% loyal to her near immediately.
She’s this man eating dangerous rouge possessed thing and they treat her like a sweet little damsel in distress. No wariness after the first day. Just obsession.
Oh and the spiders hate water. Yet she jumps in a river no issues with wolf guy and showers with the others no issue. Plot hole much?
It makes no sense! I’m officially annoyed.

Did I read the Ascend series by Maya Nicole and immediately run to get this book- yes
Is the cover absolutely gorgoeus- also yes
Let's talk about where it got a little downhill for me- I don't know if it's because I had the Ascend series fresh in mind that automatically set my expectations slightly higher but Widow fell really flat for me.
Camellia is too one-dimensional with a personality I could not click with. Her inner thoughts were hard to follow and seemed very "airhead" like. I was so heartbroken by how this book turned out because Lucy was one of my favorites from the Ascend series and I really wanted daddy bad to get his happy ending. I tried to push through for him but everything triggered me- dialogue, plot, reactions, emotions urgh
I am the first one to support a good paranormal reverse harem but this one is a no for me
I was really intrigued by the beautiful cover and blurb. It was a good story but, the characters needed more depth. It was also obvious there was backstory we were missing. It is listed as standalone but, it is part of a bigger world where these characters were previously introduced and I didn't know that. It would be a great story if you read the previous series.
I stopped reading at 40%. The very short paragraphs, consisting of one or two sentences, made the writing feel choppy. It's a stylistic choice, one that Lucy Monroe also prefers (Monroe writes for Harlequin) and sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't. In this case, it didn't because the writing also seemed disjointed. The dialogue didn't flow well. I've not read anything else by Maya Nicole, so I'm not sure if this is her typical style of writing.
The plot moved at an odd pace, and was too strange. Camellia wants to live, then she wants to die -- this is something one of the guys commented on, and it's true. She's inconsistent. They find out about her spiders, and then Luc says, "You were supposed to be dead. How did you survive that?" and I don't know what he's talking about. Did he make some sort of move? He's pressing her against a wall with a blade to her neck as he says this, but it didn't seem like he had tried to slash her jugular, so what is he referring to?
Then the guys say they'll help Camellia figure things out, but there are chapters where a whole lot of nothing happens, except that Ric is staying in her apartment, and Luc takes a job as a security guard at her place of work to watch her while she's at work. I couldn't tell if they were watching her for her protection or because they thought she might run off, or they expected her spiders to appear and attack randomly. At first, it seems to be that they didn't want her to run off, but later they appear to trust her, yet the arrangements continue.
It was annoying that they don't let Camellia explain herself -- never once did I hear her tell them that the spiders only attack married men who cheat. Perhaps that would be pertinent? She is a meh kind of heroine, not having any particular personality traits that stand out, except for the desire not to kill any more people. The men are meh too -- Ric, who is more like a puppy dog than an alpha wolf shifter; Lucifer, who is more grumpy than scary and certainly doesn't exude power; and Kai, who is a fallen angel with a very uninteresting story: he fell because he kept trying to visit his family after he died, which was forbidden for a guardian angel to do. ::rolleyes::
The story is not interesting enough to keep me reading. There isn't even much chemistry between the guys and Camellia. Most of the story so far has been from her POV with just one chapter from Lucifer's POV. She thinks they're handsome and hot, but I'm not seeing a great deal of attraction or connection between her and any of them. Certainly, after she puts a dog collar on wolfy Ric and walks him to the park and plays fetch the ball with him, it's hard to imagine him as a love interest. I am not attracted to guys who act like puppy dogs. And he looks at other women while they're at Kai's bar with her -- this is such a no-no, and also doesn't convince me that he wants her at all.
I like paranormal romance because the male leads are usually possessive and protective, but here all the guys are beta, as one of the other reviewers said. And it is a huge let-down. It's not what I expect at all, especially in an RH.
This was a love at first sight for me, with one of the most beautiful covers, and thanks to the cover I've discovered a great book and a great author. The story is as beautiful as the cover and it has the same creepy factor. There is no cliffhanger but if you have problems with spiders, this is not a book for you because wow, creepy. The author did an amazing job building the atmosphere loaded with spiders in the backgrounds and at times in the forefront of the story. Her writing is impeccable, as well as her ability to convey emotions. And this book is all about creepy spiders and tons of emotions, some new, some old and unresolved, but mostly, it's about love and new beginnings. The world is incredibly interesting and well developed and although this is a spinoff from her previous series, I don't feel like I have been missing out because I haven't read it yet. But I am definitely going to read it now that I know how great this author is in spinning a story. The characters are well developed and multilayered. Not all of them are instantly lovable but they try their best, and eventually, they all get under your skin. Lia is a doctor who ends up hosting spiders after an unfortunate incident, and she is trying her best to live with everything that goes against her nature. The guys are mostly wonderful and quite patient. Their chemistry is off the charts and there are some hot and steamy scenes to make you sweat. This was a great story I devoured in one go and I loved it. I loved everything about it and I can't wait to dive into the other works of this author. She is awesome!
This RH was disappointing to say the least. Started out really cool and interesting and ended lackluster. The draw was that this woman was inhabited by an entity that manifested spiders and would once a month kill her pray which consisted of cheaters. I totally dig it. Then a wolf shifter, Lucifer, and fallen angel catch her and try to get this entity out. It comes out and in order for it to come out she had to die, but then she came back from Lucifer going and retrieving her from heaven I think, and ect. Honestly, I would’ve liked to see her keep her spidey side and have the men work with it. The book became boring.
Thought this sounded fun and sort of creative but was very dissapointed. Awkward, cringe-y writing, under-explained plot, and boring relationships that lacked chemistry. Everyone's POV felt the same and I had to skim to get to the end because I just didn't care much.
I think the main reason I didnt give this 5 stars was that I just wasnt invested in it at all. I wonder if I had read celestial academy first, and infernal council if that was also set before this, if I would have liked it better.
There was not a lot of depth to the characters really, there was some plot holes, and there was lots of filler text.
Most of the characters felt very flat. Not a lot of detail was given on any of them, including physical description. I think Ric had green eyes and his wolf was black but as far as descriptions there was not much else that I noticed. Their personalities were all pretty generic and plain, including the FMC. I dont know if this was because the author assumed that we had read the other books and knew from there? I dunno but I wrote have like more to go on.
The other slight annoyance was the plot holes, or things that happened that didnt make sense. Her eyes go black in a situation and they think maybe its because there is "easy prey" close by. But that makes no sense. She's an ER doctor. She would constantly be surrounded by "easy prey" at work but it didnt seem to be a problem. Also, there was no foreshadowing of fated mates. I am not familiar with this world and didnt know that was a potential outcome here, which made some of the early interactions not make a lot of sense.
Finally, there was a lot of filler text. I found my self skimming through chunks of the book about opening a door, going to this place, doing this thing. It was all just filler and didnt add anything to the story. It was like they were trying to meet a quota for a word count or something.
In the end I wish that the filler text had been scrapped and that word count used to introduce us to deeper aspects of the characters. I didnt care about any of them at all, and that makes a book unfulfilling for me.
On a possible note it was well written. Few if any editing errors. Although, I noticed that Ric was spelled Rick one time, but super minor. I really couldn't fault the book mechanically. It just didnt make me feel anything so I knocked a star off, maybe I should have knocked off 2 but I think some people would enjoy it, especially if you've read the other series and know the characters from those.
This book caught my eye from the moment I saw it. Though, I didn't read it instantly and had it on my TBR a long time after. We all know the problem with TBR's... there is never a bottom and luckily, I decided now was the time to read it.
I loved that book. Of course, it's not perfect. At least for me, something was missed. My rating isn't always one, what has to do with flaws or anything like that. I rate according to the feeling a book left me. I guess we all do rate subjective. Nothing wrong with that. But as much as I liked the book, meaning the plot and characters, and wished I could have read more, it doesn't felt like a personal 5 stars.
But 4 stars is solid and still good. Of course, it has faults, like some plot wholes and some things aren't as round as they should be. And I didn't really get it, why Picard go with the shaman. Along with some minor other things. I think, that has to do with the series before this book. I only realized during the reading, that this book is part of another series, or more accurate this book plays after a series. So I don't have all details, and I'm not sure, if I will read the series before that. I'm not good at going backwards, when I know things about the story before and the characters. Had I known it before, I would have read the series before this first. But maybe with time, I'll catch up. Who knows? But still, even with the wholes in the knowledge, it was great to read. I had fun and enjoyed it. And that's what matters.
Overall, it was a good read. And I really wished to read more about them, and especially more about the future after the epilogue.
I was very excited for Lou's story. And while this was a good book, it felt to me almost different. Different as in parts of the character and voice of the story didn't seem to me to match 100%. Now that could just be me especially since I loved "lou" from the beginning maybe I built him up to much & wanted more, I don't know. I did like that this was a standalone essentially but again some things felt rushed or off and I would have absolutely read more books about Lucifer, Kai, Ric & Lia. Some off my issues with it may just have been personal don't let the above mentioned turn you off this book or this author (I would definitely suggest the infernal council series of hers -it ties into this and is my favorite so far). This author does have a unique way of creating worlds and dynamics and is very good at a perfectly humorous line of moment. This and the other stories also do a very good job with the reverse harem why choose romance aspects. Plenty of tension and not moments littered through out - also with some light in this case m/m, group interaction and general variety. Good book, especially for an Rh paranormal standalone.
I am absolutely obsessed with this world of angels, demons and fallen! First I read Celestial Academy series in which I was already obsessed with Lucifer through his fatherly tendencies, then fell even more for him with his protectiveness of Lia and sexiness and steaminess! Although what is it with these women dying and becoming angels in sacrifice for their men and or the world!? Seems a reoccurring theme! I love that I read the bonus scene from the other series first because it didn’t give anything away other than that Ric is the only one that could be the father of it. Although how it’s possible is a bit confusing, but such is life in a book!
I really liked this one. I really like Lucifer during Dani's book and the brief appearances of Ric and Kai so I was kinda happy that this was a bout the three of them and a lovely ER "possessed doctor. I will say that I liked this better than the Celestial Academy books, while this did have some questionable aspects to it there was just something that made up for it. I did really like Lia, she was strong and just went with the punches that were thrown at her, I mean she has murderous spiders living inside her and it didn't really faze her that much. Overall this was a good book that had some of my favorite side characters from the Celestial Academy finding the love they deserve.
I love a good standalone! This one had a different concept that anything I've read before. It centers around a Widow demon that has possessed Camellia, or Lia.
Lia gains the attention of Lucifer, Ric and Kai, and they will do whatever they can to rid her of her Widow demon. I was excited that they went to Inferna and we got to see a bit more of that world we were introduced to in Celestial Academy. I love the little bit of character crossover as well.
I haven't read anything by Maya Nicole that I didn't like. I have loved all of her series so far and find myself consumed in them. I also have zero self control and have to devour them 😅
After reading Celestial Academy this is a cop out, of even a draft.
It has so much potential yet it all fell flat.
The highlight was knowing what happened to Lucifer when he went to heaven. I don't enjoy smut pushing books but this was made worse by calling him Lucifer in the act. Am I so out of the loop that this is meant to be normal?
We are told the heroine is an A&E (ER) doctor yet the one time she's meant to shine and show us.....!! she's a shaking mess. She literally holds up the wall, making friends with said wall. Why bother with that direction then?
Right! bottom line, read Celestial Academy instead. It's not without its issues but it's better than this.
-This is a spin-off if the celestial academy series (which is a great RH) so I recommend reading it first to have more connection to the characters. -1 female MC, 3 mates. Told from POV of all main characters but mostly the female MC. -Female MC is 32, successful, strong. -Steam is hot. Does not overshadow the plot. Dominant men. Light m/m, not a relationship. Group scenes.
The heaven/hell theme carries over from the other series with no clear distinction of good vs. evil (I.e. everyone in hell is bad).
You can read this book as a stand-alone. I recommend it.
Great look at some characters from previous books. Love the older female character and the guys including getting to see more of Lucifer. Only thing I was sad about was Picard. They didn't talk about his sacrifice or Lia even mention he was gone. He was a cute little companion. Get a little glimpse of the other books as well such as info on Danica and her guys as well as Sammi and her in Inferna. Cute standalone. Multiple povs. Slight mm of touching and comfortable being near each other during hot scenes.
Lia is a ER Doctor in LA and she runs into a trouble when a patient comes in and bites her. Lia becomes a Widow demon that has to kill men which she hates. She gets found out by Ric the demon wolf Shifter from Inferna who gets Lucifer and Kia involved. They do everything they can to try to save Lia from the Widow demon possessing her. This was a story with a bit of adventure and a sweet ending for three troubled men that we see in the Celestial academy series. Lucifer deserves a HEA after what happened with Lilith and it was great to see him get it in this book
Wow! First of all I tend to avoid anything to do with spiders, but I decided to try the sample, since the story looked intriguing, and I was hooked. This is first story I have read by Nicole, but it won’t be the last. Lia is a doctor, and after a patient comes in one night, she suddenly has a spider living inside her,, and forcing her to kill once a month. Lia is doing her best to manage all the changes, when she meets three guys who are willing to help, or kill her if they need to. The story is fast- paced, steamy, and unique :)
This was a great read and my first from Maya Nicole. I liked the characters and the fast pace that comes with a good standalone. The Widow possession was something new I hadn't read before, and I liked that it was actually uncommon for a human to be possessed. Without giving away any spoilers, I will say that I thought the ending was going to be different than it was, but was still good. I'll be moving on to the Celestial Academy trilogy next, as that is about Lucifers daughter and I am intrigued to read her story.
I thought this was a really interesting concept which is why I picked it up, but the execution was a little lacking for me. I don't know if it would have been better had I read the author's other books in this world, but as a standalone it should work as a fully formed story in isolation. I just felt that the characters lacked some depth and there were some plot holes that took me out of it.
Overall I kind of liked it, but had some problems with the execution. Perhaps some of her other titles might work better for me.
I enjoy Mayas books and had this one on my DBR it’s awhile. I started it this morning not realizing it’s related to her Infernal series. So nice to read characters that were in another series. This one’s a standalone. A black widow bites an ER doctor and changes her. Once a month she or not her really but her spiders kill a cheating man to feed on. When she’s out picking a victim she meets three hot guys they end up knocking her out. They all bond and go to hell trying to rid her of her spiders. Lots happened there you really need to read it to believe it.
I loved Maya Nicole's Celestial Academy series, and as soon as I began reading Widow, I knew that I would love this book as well. It was exactly the book I needed to get over the book hangover I had from finishing her Celestial Academy series. The only complaint I have is that the book was not longer as I really enjoyed the characters in this book. I can not wait to see what Maya does with her next series!
Lia has a pretty normal life as a doctor except for one thing. After a werid expierence with a paient she now has an new craving once a month. When she goes to stalk her next meal she is caught by a team of guys that are less than human. This books character build was great and it was such a good standalone because I feel content with how it ended with out any burning questions to be left answered.
Lia is a great doctor but she has a murderer possessing her. The black widow demon inside her didn't seem too bad but Lucifer, Ric, and Kai knew that the demon would take her over and she ould go to hell. She is too good of a person for that. The three men do everything they can to save her and I enjoyed watching them fall for her. I do wish that there were moments with Danica and more time from Lucifer's POV.
If you’ve read Celestial Academy, then you were already in love with Lucifer so this book will make you do a happy dance!
Widow was pretty great. I put it off for a LONG TIME because I’m terrified of spiders, but I’m so glad I finally read it. Having Lucifer find his HEA with his mates warms my heart to now end.
Follow Lia as her and her men try to find a way to save her from what she’s become. It’s a bumpy ride, but oh so good!
I felt a lot less connected with this series especially with how short it is. To put a RH fantasy book in one single book is definitely a feat. There was a lot of circumstantial Insta love. I also didn’t love the fact that the FMC was may be in her late 20s early 30s, and her love interests were hundreds if not, thousands of years old. It’s weird. Let’s admit it. I also hope that we see the little monkey again, he was an interesting character.
Loved this one. This is all about Kia, Ric, and Lucifer and I love it. An unlikely trio but it just makes sense. The spice in this is 🥵🫠. They get up close and personal with each other to make it that much better for Camille. (No ⚔️) my only complaint it that it could have been a bit longer, some parts felt a bit rushed. But overall it was amazing and i definitely feel it was worth the read.
