That was kind of sad and disappointing. This series started out great a couple of people trying to do good in the world of heroes and villains. The interactions with the pro-Heroes from the main book was great.
But then there was Captain Celebrity, then the Eraser Head story (1st half of the story was actually good) which turns out to be just an excuse to remove him from the story. Which was a crappy thing to do story wise. So I was really looking forward to a return to our two main characters actually getting to be the center of the story. But then this has turned into some crappy Romance Comic, with the main female lead and the old manager both aiming to make our hero theirs. But then Pop spends the comic building up to tell Crawler her true feelings, only to flake out at the last second. While our hero is mister clueless while he job hunts. It is just disappointing, if I wanted to read a romance comic I would just read a romance comic or the X-Men for the drama. I read the Manga to get something different from American comics.
But a week later and Pop is suddenly it is just completely disappointing.
4.5 stars! Wow wow wow this was a good one! The ending to Aizawa’s backstory in the first few chapters had me close to tears. And those last two chapters!!!! HOLY HECK!! Completely dark and unexpected direction but I’m excited to see where it goes!!
The terrifying cliffhanger from the previous volume is resumed, still exploring a flashback. Aizawa and Oboro are out on patrol for their work study, but then as the cliffhanger hinted, everything goes wrong during a villain attack, and the pair have to leap into action beside Yamada.
What's interesting about this volume and the previous one is that we get a look inside Aizawa's head. We don't see so much of him in the main series, but here we see how he thinks an feels about things. For someone who's so nonchalant and calm about everything, his mind is going a mile a minute. He's an overthinker and a worrier. We also get to see him fight alone for the first time. He's full of doubt about his Quirk and his fighting ability, and we get to see him take down his first villain all on his own and full of confidence, inspired by the words of encouragement from his friend.
A death happens, and it's very emotional. It wasn't unexpected, as the character hasn't been spoken about much in the main series, but it still hurt. The way it affects Aizawa is heartbreaking. Who would think that rain and a cat would cause a trigger to such a painful memory for him? Then we skip to Aizawa's final year and we see the introduction of his sleeping bag, quirky habits, and his nonchalant personality shining through a little more until he becomes the man we know. We see how he went from student to an underground hero, and all the decisions and motivations behind it.
Side note: I would highly suggest reading this volume and the previous one before reading volume 26 of the main series (or at least Aizawa's backstory in chapters 59-65). Someone from Aizawa's past is mentioned in the main story, and if you want the full effect and understanding of the scene in question, you'll want to read this.
This volume and the previous one has definitely made me like Aizawa even more. He's probably one of my all-time favourite My Hero Academia characters, and to see his backstory, even if it is a little sad, is really interesting. He's calm, cool, and collected on the outside, but on the inside he's a worried, overthinking mess. He just knows how to conceal it well.
We then return to Koichi and his gang and learn what they've been up to. We discover that it's been three years since Koichi became the Crawler, and he's a college graduate, ready to become a full adult in the world, but that means he may not have time to be the Crawler anymore. After Captain Celebrity leaves for America, it's like life begins to change for everyone. The Vigilantes gig is looking like it may come to an end soon, as everyone is busy and moving on with their lives, getting jobs, going to school, etc. and it takes it's toll on Pop Step. Poor Pop begins to feel like she's being left behind, understandably, and her feelings for Koichi are still going unnoticed by the air-head that he is. Everyone appears to be moving on without her.
Pop begins to plan a route for her own journey, even if that means going solo. She's so low in self-confidence, but people help her realise that she has as much potential as anyone. However, a surprise enemy takes advantage of Pop right under our noses, and she gets herself into a lot of trouble. There's a shocking twist that will have your jaw on the floor, unable to believe how you didn't see it coming!
Koichi is forced to look at his relationship with Pop. She's had feelings for him since day one, but he's such a naïve and oblivious air-head that he's never noticed. He's been so absorbed in everything else in his life that he's never really even taken the time to get to know her at all. So, when she's in trouble, he discovers how little he really knows about her. He's taken their friendship for granted. He has to take a look at what his relationship with her means and what they mean to one another.
The cliffhanger plot twist at the end was utterly shocking, and I'm so excited to see where the story goes from here!
Woah, this cover art is so freaking awesome! I think this is by far the most captivating and meaningful cover in Vigilantes series. The first half where the story of Aizawa and Shirakuma unfolded was dope. However, the second half was about Pop's conflicted feelings for Koichi. I loved this volume!
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Okay, but this cover, the conclusion of Aizawa's backstory, OBORO AND ALL HIS PURE GOODNESS, this volume was superb. Also def needing Pop and Koichi to be together I'm just saying.
Eraserhead’s backstory was fantastic, but even more surprising to me in this was POPSTEP!! I’ve always loved her character but the majority of this volume put her front and center and HOLY WOW that ending. I am so so so invested in this series.
A sad yet meaningful continuation of Aizawa's backstory, and some angst and pining between Koichi and Pop! I'm so shocked by that sudden twist, and can't wait to see what dark turn the story takes.
The plot thickens! The end of Aizawa’s flashback and we find out more about our overarching mystery villain.
So we see how Shirakumo dies (at least as far as we know, spoilers for MHA ) and NGL, it’s a bit anticlimactic. I love that his encouragement and faith in Aizawa is what pushes him to defeat a villain all on his own, even as a work study hero, but the villain felt a bit lame and it was all so sudden. I guess that’s kind of how deaths like these happen sometimes, but I would’ve liked more for such an important plot point. It basically encourages Aizawa to work even harder, only on groundwork hero/life saving, fully uninterested in his furthering a career and his name, as we see how he is now. But I love that Shirakumo was the first one to say he’d be a good school teacher 🥺 it’s so true, my sweet little angel.
Makoto has come back for a bit and apparently decided that she’s looking towards her future wants Koichi as a romantic partner. Apparently since she has no clue where she’ll be fame wise in her future she thinks it’d be nice to have a normy as her partner. TBH I found this incredibly out of character and shocking. Koichi has always had a crush on her, but their relationship always felt platonic on her end and she seems a bit older than him so I never saw it that way. She tells him she wants him to seriously think about it and give him a final answer when she’s back for good months later, but she wants him to talk to Pop first because she doesn’t want to come between them. If this turns out to all be her ploy to push these two into admitting their feelings n get them together, then I’ll be so excited/1000000% all for it, but idk if that’s what this is.
Pop overheard and has been running at any chance to be alone for fear of this conversation. I just need the girl to buck up and tell Koichi how she feels!!! We all know she adores the boy, just do it! She writes down her feelings but never gets the courage to give it to him.
Meanwhile their performance they’d been doing, narufest, has come to an end, so now the have to all figure out what they want to do. Pop tries busking on the street, going back to her roots, and runs into the manager of some of the other narufest gigs. He listens to her work and helps her make it more rock/really encourages her talent. I don’t recall him existing before this volume, but he seemed really sweet/I always enjoy someone encouraging Pop. Then he changed outfits and pulled his hair back and I was like, oh this dude’s kind hot. He gets a little tipsy and basically tells pop he’ll do whatever he can to help her n he has feelings for her, and she’s like “nah I did this for my confidence, bye!”
And of course THAT’S when it’s revealed that this new hottie is actually the scar/shadowed overarching villain! How??? Idk??? But of course he WOULD be hot, tho idk how he hide a scar unless that’s a stylistic choice since he was in shadow for so long, or maybe it was supposed to be his bangs and not a scar?? truly who knows lol but that reveal was crazy. He ends up taking Pop to his murder den and now she’s missing. Of course Koichi is on the search for her, but also realizes how little he knows about her and how much he’s taken her for granted. I loved his moment of “and what are you to me?” UGH realize your love please! But then it cuts to bombs going off caused by what I think is Pop??? She’s all sexified and looks way older so I think she’s brainwashed, but she’s with the villain Nomura version and they’re calling themselves Pop Rock. Ooof drama!!! Very excited to see where we go from here. I’m worried for my girl, buuut if this pushes Koichi to recognize his feelings and save her a second time??? Heck yes, all about that and fully worth it!

Well that was some classic grooming and weirdo kidnapping a young girl. This bitch has actually taken our PopStep and turned her into the new queen bee. How dare he? Was it getting a little romantic at the end? With Koichi questioning what they are to each other. I’m really loving these double pages of heroes looking out at their city, it’s just a classic.
Aizawa’s story has ended with him off to join UA as a teacher and fulfilling his dreams with his lost friends. Shirakumo was a heavy loss, he was such a sweet characters and had such lightness about him- the clouds I suspect. I do feel that his death was a bit random though, it was rubble. How many time has rubble crashed on characters in this story world? No one has died from it so far but it had to be the good guy. Typical. At least he saved those kids. And subsequently street cats for years to come through Aizawa.
I think we are moving into the endgame. Koichi is thinking of retiring and he said his story concluded at the end of the summer. He is definitely still alive at the end, but what is he up to. It was interesting that Pop suggested he get his license. As if there is another way to do this besides going through the high school course route. I also thought this was going to be the end goals but now I feel like there is danger ahead and he is going to be injured forever. Oh no. What if his quirk gets stolen?
After Aizawa’s story line, we follow Pop who is uncertain about her future as everyone around her moves on. Even Makoto is back to move on and move in on her man. She is vulnerable and ends up being groomed by 6 and turned into the new Bee. I can’t wait to see how this is resolved and how the team deal with this. Speaking of the team, how long has it been since they’ve seen Knuckles? Surely he’s coming back to help find Pop. So many people were looking for her. Because she is loved.
My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 9 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next ten chapters (63–72) of the on-going manga series.
The first half of the tankōbon concludes the story of Shota Aizawa's past, before he became the hero and teacher Eraserhead. It is a coming-of-age story, which concludes Aizawa's work-study program with Tenma Nakaōji as His Purple Highness, which turns his character that he would eventually adopt, albeit with a deadly cost.
The second half 0f the tankōbon focuses on Kazuho Haneyama as Pop☆Step as she struggles to find her place in the world as it seems that everyone around her is moving on. Koichi Haimawari is going on job interviews to secure a job and thinking about giving up his vigilante identity as The Crawler. Her friends are also going on with their lives and she must confront her growing feelings for Koichi, but Makoto Tsukauchi returning from the States starts to complicate matters.
Meanwhile, her manager Rokuro Nomura shows an interest in her – as he claims to be her number one fan. It is later revealed that this was an alias as he is really Number 6, a member of the Villain Factory and that he survived his fight with Knuckleduster. He would eventually capture Kazuho Haneyama and the tankōbon closes with an evil version of Pop☆Step.
Hideyuki Furuhashi has written this tankōbon. It nicely concludes the flashback story of Shota Aizawa and shows readers how he became the capable hero that he is today. The far more interesting story is that of Kazuho Haneyama as Pop☆Step and her thoughts to her future and falls prey to Rokuro Nomura – her manager, who is later revealed to be Number 6 – the same evil that Knuckleduster fought and survived.
All in all, My Hero Academia: Vigilantes, Vol. 9 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems intriguing and I cannot wait to read more.
I was looking forward to this one the most because important shit was going to happen to Aizawa, Yamada, and Nemuri with Oburo but it felt kind of anticlimactic?
Maybe it's because I already knew he was going to die coming into this one but it felt too fast paced (I honeslty expected a little bit more Oburo content) and I thought the death was going to be more dramatic. I thought he was going to die in some underground mission or something and there was going to be a lot of pressure, I didn't expect a rock and a kinda cute villian to take him out.
Speaking of his death though, I will say it still hurt to see Aizawa imagining Oburo cheering him on and to see Nemuri and Yamada's reactions to him. It hurts to not see them together completing their dreams together and it hurts more knowing that they are going to deal with even more hardships and loses soon.
Another reason to this not getting 5 stars is because the flashback to a timeskip was very abrupt and confusing. Also the new Pop Step feels a little, idk, uncomfortable to me. She was already kind of sexualized for a, I think, middle schooler with the way she was dressed and treated but now with her new transformation looking even older it feels a little icky because I know she's still a teen. (Also the possible romance thing between Crawler and Pop Step because again the age is a problem for me).
Lastly Pop Step realizing everyone was going down knew paths without her made me so fucking sad. Also having that time dude (who I cannot remember his name rn) be disguised as a manger was a fun little plot point I didn't expect.
That was just a bunch of rambling whoops.

- shirakumo's death happening so suddenly really fucked me up like he was there one second and then gone the next so its no wonder aizawa didn't even realise what had happened till it was too late - the fact that he can hear shirakumo's voice encouraging him too :((( - no because its the literal epitome of a tragedy, the way shirakumo dies too young and his death haunts aizawa for years and years. i can't even imagine how it was when fourteen years later he hears that his best friend who he never stopped grieving for was stripped for parts and desecrated to create a really powerful villain who could possibly regain his consciousness like how sick and twisted ugh this whole thing makes me want to throw up - the rain stopped :( - bye bye aizawa <3 - the timeskip caught me so off guard - so does that mean pop's a highschool senior? - koichi looks good in that new hoodie - "the summer of my senior year would be the crawler's final season" GET OUT - makoto coming back to confess to koichi same girl same - pop trying to figure out a way to express her feelings <3 - this manager idiot is shady - OH OFCCCC ITS 6 - as soon as that mf had a character profile and tied his hair up i knew it was that crazy ass - also wtf why is knuckleduster randomly there is that a flashback or what - NOOO STAY BACK POP ILL PROTECT U - NO THE BEE USER GOT HER - "what am i to you?" my bbygirl koichi

I truly enjoyed this volume...but I will harp on the biggest reason I felt that this volume didn't reach 4 stars and that is the backstory of Eraser. As much as I loved what they did in the previous chapter, this one had the opportunity to no jump into the scene in which if you read the main-story you are all too aware was going to happen. I think it was a missed opportunity to further tell other backstories but instead they went to the defining moment. The story is very enjoyable and to some it might be a minor complaint but I just felt is should not have been so soon. All the backstory they could have talked on was skipped right into this moment and for that, it loses some of its magic in my opinion.
There are some further developments on the relationship front for a few characters and it definitely is intriguing! Also....an AMAZING REVEAL that is sure to be the talk of this volume! Vigilantes continues to grow the universe in a great and entertaining way.
this is a plotline i've been waiting forever to read and honest to god this volume exceeded my expectations except i still want more scenes from aizawa's hs years THIS WAS SO GOOD I LEGIT SOBBED BY THE END OF IT BC OH MY GOD shirakumo,,,,,,,,,,,,, he's so precious,,,,,,,,,, and the friendship between him aizawa and hizashi,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, god yes im convinced aizawa was in love w shirakumo bc can u not pick up on the YEARNING? the ANGST? but the brotherhood :( gosh i genuinely love this series and think it matches up to the vibe bnha gives perfectly (tho uh def has mega problems w sexualization of minors but anyways ! this just hits harder after reading the part of the main series where kurogiri is revealed to be a nomu, like i legit stopped there and finished this volume before proceeding

I owe the previous volume an apology, because the main manga reached a point where the Aizawa sidestory here came sharply into focus - so while I still wasn't a huge fan of diverting away from our main characters for such a long time, it at least does make sense as to why they've done it, and it kicks you in the heart along the way too.
Then we get back to business as the main characters start to look at the next stages of their lives, only for that to all go wrong and the volume to end on an absolutely dire cliffhanger.
Vigilantes is all systems go again, and even if it looks like the story is winding down, I hope we've got a lot more left to go before the end.
Okay so the ending was kind of unexpected. They made pop into a villain and I’m not here for it. Bro I loved her before so much. Get her back to normal right now! Anyways besides that I think I almost cried multiple times throughout this volume. The beginning was just so sad and heartbreaking, and Pops feelings hurt. Oh and the manager I kind of did it trust him at first, in my mind I was like “he looks really familiar, why is that?” Now I know he’s number 6, and I’m all for that plot twist but he can’t take my girl pop like that and turn her into a villain. They better save her right now. I’m so pressed but like also super interested.

I gave this one four stars because of the tragedy of Shirakumo and the conclusion of the Young Aizawa arc, but honestly that was only like two chapters out of this whole thing and the rest was pretty boring. I guess there was a time jump of two or three years at some point (maybe after the Young Aizawa arc) but I didn't notice that for awhile so I was a little confused as to why so many changes were being referenced. Not to mention, now Koichi and Pop are being targeted by a villain who only ever had a beef with the Master guy, so I'm not sure how that makes sense, narratively speaking. And those damn bees are back? This story is such a disorganized and directionless mess, I swear.
*It wraps up Aizawa's backstory, which still wrecked me even though I knew what was to come because of the present-day MHA storyline.
*The detective's sister tells Koichi that she's interested in going steady with him and even starting a family eventually- but she wants to know how he and Pop feel about each other first.
*The bee-user takes over Pop. Whaaaaat!
Overall, I'm very happy that I stuck with the series and pushed through the first 6 volumes.
